That is going to be almost exactly what my rig will be (replace GTX with GTS) when my CPU arrives Tuesday (ZOMG FINALLY). The EVGA board is, according to most reports awesome.

So you ordered your CPU, Calvin? Which did you get?

Edit: Hehe, I need to read more carefully. So you got the E6600, I see.  nod

Yeah, got it from newegg. They cleverly dropped their prices right after the UPS/Fedex cutoff line, so it won't ship until Monday-however, newegg's distribution center is so close I will have it Tuesday. I was vaguely considering the 6700 but when it didn't drop I decided to just do it. I am going to make a big post out of my entire upgrading adventure, so be ready smile

That's cool. I was thinking of sticking with the E6400 to save money, but the E6600 is only $39 more. Oh well, it's money well spent. smile

I think at this point the performance and overclocking potential of the 6600 makes it the clear choice in that range if you have the. I mean, its 40$ bucks, and you get a fast chip and a great overclocker. What else are you putting into your new build?

I posted my wish list in my post, but here's my wish list:

https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Wishlist/PublicWishDetail.asp?WishListNumber=5905128&WishListTitle=New+system

I already ordered my RAM since I saw the $50 instant rebate and there's a $50 mail-in rebate. That was the Crucial Ballistix RAM 2GB kit. And I got my Zalman CPU cooler. But the rest of what I want to get is on the list. I'll probably put in my order later this afternoon.

Great list of parts man. I have some general concerns about Crucial RAM and the possibility of them just frying out on boards, but the Ballistix is an awesome kit and supposedly is blazing fast. The P5N is also a great OCing board. I almost went with it but was a little concerned about some stability and RAM config problems, but it seems like its the "classic" powerful OCing board. Basically, I am pretty jealous of your list!! You spent a bit more than me and went with the Raptors and the DDR2 1000 RAM (I got DDR2 800) but overall that looks great-also, that BGF card is supposedly the next best thing to the GTX. Its lightning fast for a GTS-pricey, but apparently worth most of the pennies! I am curious you went with the Zalman over the Tuniq (which I ended up with) any particular reason?

Well, for one, it is out of stock.  Tongue Actually, I just noticed that when I replied to your post. smile Anyway, I didn't do too much research on the heatsinks. I just went with Zalman due to brand name. At first, I thought the Tuniq didn't come with a fan which concerned me, but I guess I misread the description somewhere. Anyhow, the Zalman was in stock and had a $10 instant rebate. I'm pretty happy with my parts list without going over my budget. smile

Actually, the Crucial RAM is pretty expensive. It's $270 from Newegg. I was thinking of maybe going cheaper with Corsair, but I really like the lifetime warranty with Crucial. smile

I actually went ahead and changed my mind about the video card. I'm going with the 640MB one since I have a 24" widescreen monitor on which I play games at 1920x1200. If I want all the graphics options on with AA and Anisotropic filtering, the extra memory will handle it without a hitch.

Mike, if you wait until the 22nd, you can save some money on the CPU or go with the E6600 for about the same price since everyone is anticipating Intel to drop prices then.
327  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Building new system - advice and opinions wanted on: March 30, 2007, 08:23:29 PM
Well, I actually didn't research the Zalman but it looked like the general concensus was good. If you know of a better after market heatsink, I'm all ears. Can you link the Tuniq reviews? smile

So if I plan to play games at 1920x1200, I should consider the 640MB version?

Thanks again for all the input!
328  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Building new system - advice and opinions wanted on: March 30, 2007, 02:44:02 PM
Oh, are the prices for the core duo CPUs dropping for sure on 4/22? That would be pretty cool to get.

Hmmm, I read on Tom's Hardware that the extra 320MB of video RAM didn't help performance much for the 8800 GTS. Is that incorrect?

Thanks for the input, Zarkon. smile

Well, my computer died several months ago and I've been forced to use my laptop since then. I'm getting a nice tax return, so I'm planning to buy some upgrades to my system. I already have a case, DVD and CD drives, and sound card (SB Audigy). Here's what I have so far on my list:

Shadowfang Keep does have a very nice lvl 24 dagger from the boss.

Check it out: http://www.thottbot.com/?i=9472

Stockades, like the others mentioning here, is great xp with not so great loot.  Gnomeregan is actually a pretty tough instance for its level.  You have to deal with patrolling alarm bots that if you don't kill immediately, they will spawn mobs.  Also, there are mobs there that can reflect spells back at you.  And the most annoying aspect of Gnomer is that if you are careless in where you walk, you can agro mobs below and above you which will train several mobs and most likely wipe your group.  You need to be very careful in there.

Although there aren't any Alliance quests to go to Razorfen Kraul and Razorfen Downs, those instances are nice to check out.  RFK is about lower 30's and RFD is for upper 30's and lower 40's.  Scarlet Monastery is in the same range since there are several wings with different level mobs.  You'll get a nice quest reward dagger from SM. http://www.thottbot.com/?i=3148

No.  Characters are tied to accounts.

You might be able to sell your character's 1000g, however.  It's hard to say how much it'd be worth, but you can always check the usual suspects (IGE) for what they're asking for 1000g on your server, and then undercut them on eBay/playerauctions accordingly.

That's not correct.  You can transfer characters from one account to another.  I just transferred a character from one server to another and there was an option to also change to another account.

344  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: System will not POST - Any ideas? on: August 18, 2006, 05:32:54 AM
I read that all you need for a POST is a CPU and RAM.  I didn't think you needed video or keyboard.

In any case, my system is junked now.  I tested my CPU on my brother's system to make sure it was okay and managed to damage his CPU in the process.  So instead of troubleshooting further, I gave him mine (luckily it works) since my system will not POST.  So I'm stuck with my laptop until I can afford to get some new parts.  Oh well...

Thanks for all the tips in the meantime.

My system was having some intermitent lock-up up problems the last couple of days and today it decided to completely give up on me.  I was in the middle of a game and the video went black.  The system power was still on, so I hit my reset button.  But now, the system will not POST.  I've tested my video card and it works fine on another computer.  Could this be a power supply problem?

How does that mage cast all those spells while moving?

I'm guessing it's whatever talent they get that allows them to have the next spell cast be an instant one. Looks like Pyroblast he's tossing, and that's most definitely a 6 second warmup time.

There's a talent in the arcane tree called Presence of Mind that allows your next 10 second or less casting time spell to be instant.  I can't remember the cooldown, but it might have been 10 mins or so.

I've finished both campaign levels and been playing the custom level with Inferno faction. The hellhounds are the last thing you can build in the Inferno town (even devils were available sooner - I don't know if that's mission specific though).

For that specific mission, I noticed that you need to build a tavern to build hellhounds and it wasn't available.  I didn't finish the mission so I don't know if the tavern was available to you at a later time.  There's an option to see the entire list of buildings in the bottom right corner of the screen.

You can get a DVI to VGA adapter, but newer video cards should have a DVI output.  My GeForce 6800 GT has a DVI output.

You can pretty much get any kind of adapter to convert to the inputs you need, but if you go from better quality to worse quality, it really shows.  And on a good quality screen, it makes it even worse.

When I leveled up my tauren shaman on Dragonmaw (a pvp server), the Barrens wasn't pvp flagged.  Yes, the Barrens sucks for the first time player running around, but once you learn it, it wasn't that bad to level up.

While I do agree that Alliance has it easy in Westfall, Redridge is pvp flagged, so all the pissed off Horde can come gank the noobs if they please.

I do remember the hell that was Stranglethorn Vale.  Luckily for me, I had my brother with me and a lvl 60 friend to grind through those quests.  I would be super pissed if I had to solo that crap.
