81  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Door to Door Salesmen (fun times) on: January 22, 2014, 01:54:13 AM
Just as I finished answering the phone the police showed up to our house to follow up.  They detained him in handcuffs and was ready to write him up for trespassing.  However while doing that an officer unrelatated to this call was involved in an accident, so he let him go.  The kid is from Fairfield who works for West Coast Distribution, they sale Kirby Vacuums.  They are known for hiring college students to sell their products.  The officer said they get a lot of calls for incidents like this where salesmen are too aggressive.  He said if he did cite him, our address would have been listed, so I think we're fine on scaring him and hope that he has learned his lesson.

Questions:

Your wife called the neighbor to call the police? Why didn't she just call them?
She didn't have the non-emergency number and it was probably a decision made in panic.
What would you have done if you found him before the cops did?
I would have told him to don't ever enter our house without permission and explained what he did to my wife emotionally because of his aggressive behavior.
What did he do to be "in the back of the car?"
I don't know, I wasn't the officer.  He could have just been detained.  He could have had a warrant for his arrest unrelated to today's incident, or he could have been charged for illegally entering a home.  We didn't press any charges so who knows.  I don't care, but the dude had no business to forceful enter our home.

83  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Door to Door Salesmen (fun times) on: January 22, 2014, 01:19:32 AM
So I get a call from my wife telling me that a carpet cleaner salesman (kirby) came to the door and she foolishly answered the door.  The dude aggressively entered my home without permission scaring the crap out of my wife.  He then said he would come back a few minutes later with the cleaner.  My wife locks the door and shortly after him and a woman comes ringing the doorbell incessantly.  We have a sign over our doorbell asking people to not ring because of kids taking naps, but of course they don't care to take notice.

They finally leave and Erin is shaken up.  She calls our neighbor to have him call the police.  I come home from work early and start driving around the neighborhood looking for him.  The police stopped by our house prior to me coming home.  I see the cop driving by and pull him over (yes I did biggrin) and explained the situation.  He found the guy sitting at the park.  I drove off still looking for the guy in case it wasn't him.  Drove back towards the park and the guy was sitting in the back of the car...

Moral of the story, don't answer the door when you are alone Tongue

Unless you're talking about some other roughing the kicker penalty (I was only able to watch the second half of the game), I think it was running into the kicker and was called correctly as the 5-yard kind.
well then you would be wrong just like the refs.

Rule states that if he runs into the planted foot aka the non kicking foot, it's an automatic 15 yarder.

Awesome! Hawks movin on to the Superbowl!  Oh man what a great game - a real defensive masterpiece.

just curious...  And I'm trying to be polite here.  How did you feel about the officiating on that game?

I mainly want to see if it's just me being too attached to the team

I thought the officiating in that game was worse than any of the CFL playoff games I watched this year. It wasn't poor enough to ruin a game where 2 D's played a heckuva game though. The kicker call surprised me, but that no doubt has a lot due to me primarily being a CFL fan where with only 3 downs the officials HAVE to make that call correctly. I haven't watched enough NFL games to know if that sort of ruling is uncommon. The missed turnover call at the 1 yard line was IMO worse - a player holds onto a ball like Bowman did through all that pain, you owe it to him to get that call right. Not that it would have been a game changer, since as it turned out 49ers ended up with better field position and Kaepernick through an interception on the next drive.

If the game ended at that moment I'd say it was the worst because it changed the outcome, but we had 3 chances and Kap screwed it all up, so I can't honestly say they changed the outcome.  I think they took away some of opportunities (roughing the kicker, and maybe the shoulder on shoulder call -can't remember if that stopped the niners from progressing--)  but at the end Kap threw 3 costly picks.

You had the unsportanship on Carlos Rogers for being called for pushing the WR out of bounds.
You had the roughing the kicker that wasn't called, and if it was, it would have been the 49ers ball negating the Seahawks TD
YOu had the call on Whitner for hitting Baldwin up high, (it was shoulder on shoulder, not at the head at all)

I'm not saying it's all the refs fault, throwing 3 picks certainly doesn't help your cause.

sorry my kid has been going crazy and I didn't see that you mentioned Active Directory.

I haven't found a way of what you are talking about.  We do use the \\servershare\%username% mapping in the GPO but that only maps the drive, it doesn't create the folder and apply the security.  I can see if I can find more info tomorrow

I do this for a living smile  I work on SAN storage arrays, and servers.  I manage over 2000 user accounts and many servers.  I mainly deal with GPO's and user accounts/computer policy.  I work for the Air Resources Board in California.
See now, with you dealing with that many users, I would think something like this would be nice! So as you add users, you go in and create the user folders and permissions manually? Even if you have an influx of new users?

we mainly just use that profile tab and put in the file location.  But we don't get a lot of users at once.  I'm sure when we first started (before my time) it was a pain, but that wasn't my problem Tongue

Oh, since I have your attention.
Is there a way to have a username folder automatically created and mapped?
EX: new username: susan. logs into workstation for 1st time and in addition the the mapped drives setup already, a new folder is created on the server called susan and automatically mapped to U:

this way I don't have to manually create folders and mapped drives for each user.

I tried using the connect feature in the AD user profile to \\CH-DC-1\Documents\%username% and I also tried creating a mapped drive in the GPO to the same. I also made sure that the test GPO group had read/write permissions to the documents folder.

Do you use Active Directory?

At my work, we have a volume for people's personal folder. (I hate it)

Anyways we use Active Directory and under the profile tab (I think) there's  a spot where you can put in a file path with the folder name (we use their username) at the end of the path.  Then assign a drive letter, and it will create a folder and apply the permission to the location you gave it.

I'm not at work, so I'm not sure if I'm exact on which tab, but I believe it's under the profile tab.  Let me know if you need help and I can assist tomorrow when I have AD in front of me.  You may be able to do it via GPO but I haven't seen that option.

Another thing I noticed.

On your manual mapped drive, you don't have files in the file path, so it looks like the path is \\CH-DC-1\Documents
whereas the gpo shows you have it as \\CH-DC-1\Files\Documents

Could that be the reason?  Invalid path?

Dammit! Something so simple staring me right in the face! Thanks for the help! This is why you need fresh eyes on things... Fixed the path by removing "files"..  forgot that I changed the share to be straight to Documents since I was going to setup multiple folders in the "files" folders at some point with different username permissions..

Hey no problem.  I've done that several times myself Tongue  And yes having fresh eyes definetely help, especially when you are staring at it for so long

I'm assuming your logged in as user 1?

We usually select replace instead of create but it shouldn't matter.

I'm not seeing anything wrong with your set up.  The two things I do differently is using replace, and we don't have Run in logged-on user's security checked.

wish I could be more helpful.

Do you have it so that it's item level targeted and then using the security group determining it's access?
(click on Common tab at the Drive Mapping window) Choose item level targeting, then select targeting.  Then choose the security group option under New Item.  Then choose your test group security group.  Apply the changes.

i'm away from home right now, but if I recall correctly, I did set it up with my test gpo (called "Test GPO", BTW)

well from your gpresult info I do see that the user belongs to the security group called Test GPO, and that the GPO itself is named test gpo and it's being applied.  But I'd confirm that you have item level targeting selected and you have it pointed to the test gpo security group.

There's other ways to have the gpo map the drive, but that's the way I do it.

Ken, what did you end up going with?

That's what I purchased.  I haven't made a decision on what I want to do...  So far it seems at the $<40 price range I'm not going to find anything that is nice in sound....  So I'm just going to have to live with these speakers or wait and buy something more expensive.

My trusted Altec Lansing 5.1 speakers of over 15 years bit the dust this week.  I only used the front speakers and sub on my Altec Lansings due to the room set up.  I bought the Logitech Z200's as a cheap replacement knowing that it wouldn't sound as good.  These were getting good reviews on amazon and it was spoken highly of.  So I bought them.  My brother had logitechs before so I know it was a decent brand.  With that said, they sound horrible.

Any recommendations on speakers priced no more than $40?  I don't need a sub but would use it if it was cheap enough and didn't sacrifice sound quality.  Or are <$40 speakers supposed to sound bad....
