4521  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Chronicles of Riddick? on: June 18, 2004, 10:02:58 PM
Alright just finished this today. Wow what an amazing game. Finally a game unlike Beyond Good and Evil or Far Cry that actually has an ending. Why can't developers offer closure then just ending it. Stupid

I loved being in that mech, that was so much fun, and the dialoge the mech gives is hilarious.

I personally think you should wait and focus on features that are missing.  (Trading Forum features, putting next and back arrows on your screenshot pages) stuff like that.
4526  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Madden: PC or Xbox? on: June 17, 2004, 05:21:54 PM
I never had any problems with the controls.  I had a MS Sidewinder that worked great before they introduced the analog features.  Then I bought the Logitech Dual Analog pad, and that turned out to be crapped, but Madden 2003 worked great on it.  When MVP 2004 came out the dual analogs started giving me trouble, turns out there's a known defect.  So I ended up getting a Saitek P800 and that worked great with MVP.

I'm not worried with the controls.  Also my tv and xbox is in my room so I'll still be on my computer chair Tongue

This will be my first year not buying madden for the PC.  I've owned Madden every year of it's existence on the PC.  I'm not sure why I'm buying ESPN and Madden, but because ESPN is so cheap, and with this coupon applying to Madden it's like getting 2 games for the price of 1.
4527  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Madden: PC or Xbox? on: June 17, 2004, 03:35:43 PM
Although I haven't owned madden on the xbox, I've played it before, and I've always felt the PC version to be better.  But from what I'm hearing, both versions are pretty much the same as far as feature wise.
4528  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Madden: PC or Xbox? on: June 17, 2004, 03:11:07 PM
More importantly, I'm already getting ESPN again this year as my primary football game.

However I still enjoy Madden (well I didn't like last year's version)

I received a $15 coupon for my upcoming birthday next week from EA Store.  I can the PC version for $24 after the coupon, or get the Xbox version for $34 after the coupon.

I've never owned madden on my xbox, because the PC looks a lot better.  But being able to play on Live is much simpler than the EA online crap that it is.  However ESPN is live enabled, and I can always rely on that.

Are there any significant differences from the PC to xbox besides graphics?

I'm thinking of getting the xbox because the PC is selling for $39 and eventually it will go down to $29.  If I don't like the xbox I can always trade or sell it.

It's a prequel

And I disagree about this statement...

Quote
If you haven't seen Pitch Black, you might find yourself a little lost on this one.

This movie was so different from PB, i think anyone could just watch it without knowing  anything about the other movie.  The only similarities of the two is that Riddick has eyeshine, and that's about it.

I do have a question...

When riddick went into Necropolis and he was in that chamber where the pools of silver liquid was reading his mind (I guess that's what they were doing) you saw some images of Pitch Black (those aliens)  if this is a prequel, why is that in there?  Were they looking into the future?

I'd consider it if they had a better selection on DVDs.  Right now, I'm more interested in DVD's then games, because games takes me longer to finish.  I don't mind holding onto a game for a month.  That's only $15 worth (saves me $35 a month), but dvd's I can rent how many I want for $15 at netflix.

4538  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Is Xbox ruining PC gaming? on: June 07, 2004, 11:07:19 PM
I think the Xbox supplements my gaming experience.  But PC still is my main platform.

I think it matters by what types of games you are into.  If you're into FPS games, RTS, and even RPG's, PC is probably the way to go.  But if you are only into Sports, Action-Fighting games, and racing games, Consoles are the way to go.

Luckily, my tastes are fairly broad, and so is my credit card debt Tongue.  I tend to only play sports/racing games for xbox, and everything else on PC.

I don't think xbox is killing pc gaming, I think it supplements it, depending on the person's taste.

But that's just based on me, how does it effect overall?  I think it took away some developers who were mainly for PC, and gave us the results of bad console ports (DX, HALO, and others)

Maybe with this new XNA from microsoft, that will free up time and let developers be able to customize for each platform, without costing any extra money and time.

4541  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Chronicles of Riddick? on: June 06, 2004, 01:14:23 AM
Lockdown.

I've always been against FPS games on consoles.  They simply don't work well.  Halo sucked on the console, RCTW sucked on console, Breakdown extremely sucked on the console (well it was only for the console, but you get my point)

Riddick, is a different story.  The controls are easy to use.  Shooting can be a little difficult as far as aiming, but luckily you don't have to shoot your way through the whole game (at least from what I've played)

If I can play this game without any problems, so can you.

Quote from: "dandylife"
Either way, they're stupid.

Sounds like you already formed an opinion about the game from the information you've received.  Why can't Xbox Nation?

I don't see where you can claim that dandylife already formed an opinion of the game when he didn't say anything about the game.  He simply stated that it's pretty unfair to judge a game that is not even finished.

Cool Ron -

I have some questions.

1.  Squads.  I heard there were two.  Do you pick from different soldiers, ala Ghost Recon, or are there only the 2 groups of guys?

2.  Can you choose which members form which squads, or are they set for you with no changes allowed?

3.  Once you "unlock" a mission, can you go back and play that same mission again and again, or is it strictly by the storyline?

4.  Can you choose weapon configurations before each mission, or does each soldier have his "set" weapons package?

5.  I heard the controls are very intuitive, do you find that to be the case?

Thanks.

LD

1: There's two groups, Alpha and Bravo.  Each group has 4 guys, TL = Team Leader, AR = Automatic Rifle, G = Gunner/Grenadier, R=Rifleman (the least experienced)  If the TL goes down, the AR takes his place.  The TL knows all 3 types of positions, so he's pretty effecient.

Anyways, you move as a group, sometimes all at once, or 2 at a time.  As far as controlling them, you can have each person face a certain direction, which gives you more coverage.  The game uses Fog of War, so if all of your guys are facing in one direction, your field of view is narrow, but your view is highly concentrated and can provide major fire power.  However if you tell your squad to cover all angles,  you'll have more awareness, but your fire power will be weaker (not everyone aiming at the same target)

Other than that, you can't really control your team mates seperately.

2:  It's set in stone.  Each squad has the above unit types mentioned above

3:  Once unlocked you can play the mission any time.  In fact lets say you played and beat the first 3 missions.  You can play any of those 3 missions in order.  In multiplayer, you can only play the missions you beat.  So, you either need to beat the game in multiplayer or single player to unlock missions.

4: each soldier has it's own package.  It's not like a rpg.  Each unit is specialized based on his skill type.  So a gunner will always be firing the grenade launcher (I think the TL can too incase your gunner bites it)

5:  Controls are pretty easy to use.  The tutorial explains it well, and on the back of the manual is a reference sheet which tells you all the functions the buttons do.

The game is sweet.  But as I said, if you are looking for replaybility, it doesn't offer much since multiplayer and single player is the same,  as well as the situations.  So it's quite easy to memorize what's gonna happen next.  I can see my self beating the sp, and play it via co-op once, but after that, it will probably lose it's legs.
4546  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Game Discussion: Full Spectrum Warrior [Xbox] on: June 03, 2004, 04:24:34 AM
IT's fun Rage.  It seems short tho.  I do have to admit that.  But gameplay is awesome.  I say since you have it, play it, trade it in or sell it on ebay, and use that money towards Riddick.  I've heard both games are short, so you are at a loss there.

Multi won't last long, unless they keep pumping out free content.

4550  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / NFL for Xbox: Maddedn vs. ESPN on: May 22, 2004, 11:22:04 PM
What sucks about ESPN, especially for football, they always advertise Madden, because Madden is on ABC, and ABC owns ESPN.  It's pretty hard to promote both games.

ESPN's presentation is simply the best out of the two, but some AI issues are holding it down.

Now that EA has Live, it's going to be even harder compete.    I think if EA didn't have live, ESPN would only get stronger and probably take over the xbox market for the sports world.  But that's not going to happen now.

From the video's this year, both games look amazing.  I'll probably still buy both.  I usually buy Madden for the PC and then ESPN for Xbox obviously.  But playing online with madden on the PC wasn't that great.    Maybe it's better on the console.  I think I'm going to have to rent both games to see which I like best.  That's probably the safest bet
4551  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / If this is true, say goodbye to ESPN NFL 2k whatever. on: May 19, 2004, 04:46:52 AM
It's not true. At least from what this site is saying. Who knows if this guy is legit. But find it hard to believe, that the NFL Players Union would do this. First it would create a monopoly, and 2nd they would probably lose money out of it.

The Site I found this from is down at the moment, but they already confirmed that EA is not asking for a exclusive contract, they are renewing their contract to what is similar to what they have now. The article was published in ESPN Magazine, there was a misquote, and it was too late to pull it.

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I then explained to her what ESPN the rag had reported and how it had caused quite a stir in the video game community. Very quickly, and I mean very quickly, she stated that "The Sports Journal" had reported that story and then pulled it. Before it was pulled ESPN ran the story to press. She said there was a misquote and that there IS NOT an exclusive deal being negotiatied at this time. She further stated the EA has the same deal in place they've had for the past 10 years.

it's not good "community building" when you delete your threads when people have responded.

I was the one that suggested that if he didn't like it, he didn't have to visit the site.  I wasn't trying to be rude about it.  It's not his website, or forum, and far as I know, he hasn't invested any money on it.

I apologize if I came off harsh, but it's the truth, if he objects to the content of this site or anyother site, he doesn't have to stay.  You can't force your beliefs on someone just because you don't like it.

4556  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The new consoles of E3 on: May 08, 2004, 08:55:11 PM
Personally, I don't think any of the new consoles will do well.  I believe the sequels to the established consoles (Xbox, PS2, and nintendo) will do well (well maybe not so well for nintendo)

I think there's too many consoles out right now, and by adding more will dilute the market.  I don't see these new consoles bringing in enough customers to make a profit.  It would really have to be better than the established.  If they offer similar features, they really don't have much of a chance.

I think there's room for at least 1 more hand held console.  I think there's room to improve and having more features than what the GBA gave us.
