3881  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / New Lost Game Coming video games on: May 22, 2006, 10:12:03 PM
Ah, let me see, you'll play the game as the main character Jack, after 4 hours of playing, you'll suddenly be yanked out of reality only to repeat the last 4 hours of your life on the island. Then you'll get two more hours, until the game moves onto a cutscene only to recap what you have accomplished the last 6 hours. Rince and Repeat Razz

What's the mag that has the reviews where 3 people chime in with their opinion on one game?  I think it's EGM, the format is terrible.  CGW is really good, and they don't seem too sophmoric.

I'm stuck in the U4 lab mission where there's a tram that crashes through a door, after clearing out the big room, you have a lift in the middle of the room.  Int hew ater below there's a submarine, and up top there's some dude looking out of the bulletproof window

What in the hell do I do?  I can't seem to position to get me across the other side of the room

no way I'm paying $20 for an episode.  By the time the game is over, it cost a total of $100.  If this is the way games are going to be distributed, than I think we're heading in a wrong and expensive direction

I will restate again for the record, I am very harsh on baseball titles.  Perhaps Naednek can give some detailed impressions for you folks.  His impressions may be much more inline with how you would perceive the game.  I freely admit that.

I highly doubt he'll value my impressions, he doesn't really like me much smile

I really havn't seen any AI bugs, probably because i'm on easy (so i can get used to the batting interface -- won my first game yesterday)

I have absolutely nothing against you personally naednek. And generally, we do tend to agree on baseball games (at least MVP Baseball, with the exception of the baserunning) so I would be curious to hear some in-depth thoughts on the game from you.

1st the bad...

1: Infield.  While the animations look fine to me, I'm finding the animations is causing the reaction time of the players to slow down.  I don't know if that makes any sense.  It basically suffers the same thing NBA Live 05 did.   When a batter hits a ground ball to the SS, the person controlling the SS has to wait until the animations are finished, this doesn't really slow the rest of the game down, so sometimes an easy grounder to SS can quickly become a base hit.  It's really annoying some times.  I barely got off a double play, I don't know how in the hell anyone could go for a triple.

2:I've now seen some players move fairly slow, then all of a sudden they are running super fast, as if they roomed up with Barry and took steroids.

3: The fonts are hard to read, maybe it's because I don't have HDTV, but it's just really difficult to make out some words, especially when the words are on a white background.

4: Baserunning can be frustration at times.  The cool thing, you can "que up" how bases you want your player to run to.  So if you hit a ball in the gap, and you think you can squeeze off a triple, you can hit the left trigger button 3 times and it will automatically make the player run to 3rd base.

However, start having more than 1 baserunner, it's gets frustrating, there's too much micromanaging going on.

That's all the bad things that I've noticed

1: The batting system is difficult at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's really fun to use and changes the boring press the "A" button to hit.

It's a 2 step process, 1st you plant yourself before the swing (you try to do it as soon as the pitcher releases the ball) and then once it's near the plate, you swing.  By releasing the right stick without pushing up, you'll typically have a grounder, or line drive, whereas by flicking the the stick up will be a fly ball or powerswing.   Meanwhile you can use the left  stick to aim your shots.

Pitching is also a blast, you really have more control in ball placement.

The game isn't perfect, I haven't seen many bugs, but from my experience the game is fun to play, and considering this is the only baseball game coming for xbox, there's not much I can do.

I've played about 5-6 games now, and it's no where near as bad as you are making it sound.  The only thing that's really annoying is the infielding, they react too slow.

Also, I have not mentioned one AI flaw I have seen yet.  I simply refuse to even go there.  They exist in all games, and CERTAINLY this game is no exception.  I just don't even want to get into it, in case anyone is wondering why I haven't talked about it.

What is Catch up AI, Alex.

I tend to agree with the sticky factor for the AI.  I had a grounder to shortstop and by the time the SS went through all the motions, the runner was on base.

Anyone know how to access the classic batting mode?  You know, hitting the A button.  I try doing it, and he never swings.  I looked in the options menu to see if it needs to turned on, but I'm not finding that option.
3906  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / MLB 2k6 [2ksports] on: April 05, 2006, 02:08:54 AM
I've played a few games and lost both.

The new swinging system, is really tough to get used too.  I'm starting to get discouraged.

To comment on Lockdown's responses I'd have to say I agree with #2, the new pitching interface is pretty cool, takes a few tries to get used to it and understand it, but it definetly is more involving.

The Inside Edge is awesome, it's so satisfying to strike someone out because you scouted their weakspots.

I didn't notice anything too bad with the animation.  However, the movement is a little off, and it's really hard to tell who's the active player you are controlling.  The cursor blends in the background.

I really disagree with #8.  It screams broadcast sports TV.  I've seen many cutscenes with the strike out replays.  All of them showed the 3 strikes.   I do agree with the fonts.  The fonts are hard to read in the menu, and it's hard to read the pitcher's stamina %.

Also disagree with the announcing.  It's awesome.

I have a question about the inside edge and the franchise mode.  I know I can buy scouting reports on different teams, but how do you know how many points you have?

3911  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Rise of Legends Demo on: March 31, 2006, 07:49:43 PM
Just finished playing the first mission in the campaign mode.

It feels very much like Rise of Nations, which is to be expected.

Graphics are a mixed bag.  Units don't really stand out, they're kinda bland looking, but the buildings and animation are interesting and good.

It's very hero-centric.  The RTS mode feels like Age of Mythology mainly because of the story and hero units.

When you start the demo, it warns you about long load times and incomplete content.  It's true.  You can tell some sound effects are missing.  Even a cutscene had it's audio missing, it was just a fly over on things on the map.  Didn't make any sense and felt out of place.

It took me about a minute to load the first map.  I don't have a super fast computer, but I'd say above average.

seems you can do more in the strategic map, but i didn't really fool around with it, because i had no idea what i was doing, and it was only the first level, but you can see there were more options

You can only play as Alin in this demo, (I'm not sure if you can play other sides in the skirmish mode)

The first map, was huge, it took a while for my units to get to one side to the other.  I can't imagine how big the maps will be the further you progress.
Also, you can't save in the RTS part, but in the strategic mode you can.

Hah, if you guys see me online at the time, invite me to the chat because I'm really liking the game too.

I let my friends play Oblivion, and even one that hated morrowind with a passion likes Oblivion.  They just got it right.

However, I also had a story where they were unprepared for the new feature of monsters going across zones.

In one instance, my friend had gone into an old fort, got in a little too much trouble and ran for the door zone.  As he stepped outside he breathed a sigh of relief, but I was grinning an evil grin as he did so.  When he asked me what was up I told him NPCs can now go through zones, and just then the imp that had been chasing him showed up and nailed him with a fireball.  He freaked out, but finally managed to kill it.

If you visted GG back in the day when Morrowind was out, you'd know my strong distaste for Morrowind.  I hated that game, it was incredibly boring.

I wasn't sure I'd like oblivion, just based on my experience with MW, but hype got to me, and I know I couldn't talk shit about Oblivion if I didn't at least try it and give it a chance (like i did with MW).  So, after expecting to be bored, I loaded it up, and man I'm floored.  The game is awesome.  Even with the interface issues, the game is a blast to play.

Very rarely do I play a game for 7 hours the day I get it...even more rare is playing another 7 hours the next day.  For this guy who simply couldn't stand Morrowind (but always *wanted* to like it), Oblivion just seems to have that certain SOMETHING and I've been trying to figure out what it is.

Maybe it's because things are actually happening.  I mean, totally random quests, including a quest in which I had no IDEA what I was getting myself into; a total, what the HECK is going ON moment.

Maybe it's nailing an unsuspecting troll in the back of the head with an arrow only to watch him crumble over a railing down into a pit below. *edited to add* (I think Arkon and me had the same incredibly cool physics moment!)

Perhaps it's because they just NAILED the environment.  As I was traveling from Barma (or whatever its called, the northern city) to the Imperial City, I was walking along a winding road down a hill and it looked just like an area in which I lived in real life.  It was beautiful.

I just can't get this game out of my head - while driving, I look to the side of the road and see herbs that I could be picking to mix into potions and sell, I play the game on a headset with Calvin (because we're gay like that) and hearing his reaction to stuff in the game is as fun as my own reaction to cool stuff going on.

And it's just so weird, the fact I am really engrossed in this game.  The exploration reminds me of Shadow of the Colossus.  I mean, just coming across totally random stuff, it's amazing.

And to be honest, I dislike games like this, as a rule!  I like LINEAR stuff, I LOVE hand-holding; why in the world am I so enthralled by the extreme open-endedness of Oblivion?

And I haven't even started the main quest yet!

So even while I'm not entirely sure how much longer Oblivion will continue to captivate me, or if I'll even come CLOSE to finishing the main quest; the first 14 hours of gameplay in Oblivion were pretty special to me.

I bet you gained a few pounds smile
