3801  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / The Best player who has ever played football retires this Sunday on: November 17, 2006, 10:02:30 PM
This Sunday Jerry Rice #80 retires as a 49er this Sunday.  Ironically the 49ers' opponent is Rice's former team, the Seattle Seahawks.

Saturday he will sign with the 49ers only to retire the next day when they play.

Rice has been a hero to me as a kid, and is the true meaning of an athelete.

http://www.sf49ers.com/pressbox/news_detail.php?PRKey=2550&section=PR%20News

Quote
The hallmark of Rice’s career was his unparalleled work ethic and demanding off-season training program. His grueling workouts began at Roger Craig’s infamous 2.5 mile hill, carried on to the track for speed running, and then to the football field for route precision before concluding with weights at the gym. Sweat was poured, skills were refined, and that fourth quarter stamina took root.

“I put the work in and it paid off because it took my conditioning to a whole different level,” said Rice. “When everyone else was tired, the opposing team, I was at my best. I was fresh and now I could just go to work and do whatever I had to do to put my team in a position to play.”

Rice set the gold standard for how to train, and how hard one must work to be a superstar. Yet, upon Rice’s initial retirement press conference in Denver in 2005, the Crawford, Mississippi native claimed that all the work he’d put in on and off the grid-iron still didn’t amount to how hard his father worked as a bricklayer.

Jerry Rice's Career Accomplishments

- Three Time Super Bowl Champion - XXIII, XXIV, & XXIX
- Super Bowl XXIII MVP
- Ten-Time Probowl Selection

NFL Records
- Receiving Yards - 22,895
- Receptions 1,549
- Touchdown Receptions 197
- Touchdown Receptions in a singe season 22
- Receiving Yards gained in a single season 1,848
- Consecutive games with at least one reception 274
------------

I'm hoping they put out for one passing play, that would be great.

I've posted a few pictures at Octopus Overlords of some of my newest toys (such as my DVD changer and Fireball organization system), but even my spending habits are dwarfed in comparison.

Well, just to set the facts straight... I'm not saying I am to Hetz level of insanity.

I'm just sayin' he's not twice as bad.  Maybe 1.5x.  Just sayin'.

Ya, Hetz doesn't flaunt it as nearly as much as you do Tongue

P.S. Say goodbye to Jerry for me Tongue

New PS3 consoles stolen at gunpoint

Some people can't wait: Two gunmen stormed an Elk Grove store Thursday morning and made off with four coveted PlayStation 3 video game consoles, a day before they were to go on sale.

The two robbers, wearing ski masks and black jackets and described as 6-foot-3, hit the GameStop on Laguna Boulevard about 10:30 a.m., according to Elk Grove police. They left without injuring customers or employees.

The robbers at GameStop also stole several 2005 model Microsoft Xbox 360 game systems. But those are so last year.

Looks like everyone is trying to make October the start of Christmas. I have a nagging suspicion it is the greedy fucking retailers conspiring to do it.   No problem here, I do *ALL* of my Xmas shopping over the summer so I don't have to deal with nonsense crowds and turbo-mean people in rushes.

Costco had their christmas displays up in October.  (sorry I had to do it, but it's true)

Went out on our first date night since we've been married (sad) and saw Will Ferrel's newest movie, Stranger than Fiction.  What a great movie.  It was a comedy (tragedy maybe Tongue) movie but not like his typical movies.  It was more of a smart man's \ thinking man's comedy, which I had no business being there.  I won't give away the plot, but will recommend it, even if you don't like Will Ferrell, he's not his typical self.
3811  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: LOST kicked so much unholy ass tonight (11/01) on: November 09, 2006, 04:26:03 PM
I'm liking this season.  Way better than season 2, the flow is perfect.  I felt they have too many characters and spent too much time with them, causing the storyline to be really drawn out.  This season, they pretty much ignored most of them and focused on the rest, which in turn changed the pace of the show to something more appealing.

I wouldn't mind a career change to computers-some sort of consulting work, but I can't imagine how to get started.

That's exactly where I'm at right now.  I don't know what area I should be focusing, should I be going for a minor or get a 2nd degree.   I just want to get the ball starting now, and not when we have two little kids running around Tongue

My wife wants to be a stay at home, that is always something she has dreamed about.  We got into a huge argument over this last night, and told her not all dreams come true, and it's highly likely we're going to need two incomes.  I told her I'd like that too, but in reality, it might not be feasable.  She thinks by moving out of state will solve our problems.  It might help, but she also needs to consider the cost of living vs salary changes too.
3813  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Career change (Updated) on: November 07, 2006, 06:50:11 PM
I think I need a career change.  It's not because I don't like my job, in fact, I work with great people and my work is interesting (analyzing fatal traffic collisions, can be quite interesting and sad) but the pay isn't good.  With being married now and starting a family a few years, we need to be bringing in more income.

I majored in Criminal Justice, and my goal was to be involved in law enforcement.  My priorities changed over time I realized my personality doesn't really fit in that type of environment.  I wished I listened to myself and others, so that I didn't waste any time.  But it was always a dream of mine, and it's not bad to follow them.

Anyways, I think I need a career change.  Computers has also been an interest to me, and also considered this as a career choice.  I have applied for a few jobs within the state and for the CHP in the IT field, but never got them.  I think the main reason is because I don't have a degree in a computer related field.  I have many many years of experience, but even I know I'm limited.

So, now I'm thinking of going back to school.  Money is tight, but I think we could to sacrifice now, in order to be more secure in the future.  I can't afford the tech schools, but can swing going back to California State University Sacramento, and work on a second degree during the night.  It might take a few years, but by then we should be debt free, and in a better position.

I would like to stay with the State, since it has great benefits and incentives, and there's a lot of IT jobs throughout the departments.  My question is, what should I focus on.  I'm thinking of networking, since programming is certainly not something I'm interested.

What do you guys think?  What classes should I be taking?  I'm planning on meeting with an advisor at school, I'd like to see how much this would cost as well.  The good thing, I already have a degree so I don't have spend all this time doing GE classes.

I used gamesnflix a few years ago (remember Eco-Logic?  He was the one pimping this because he had some stock or some investment into it)  And it basically sucked.  Selection was bad, and response time really slow.  However that was 2 years ago, and now I guess they have a distribution center in my city.
3816  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Blockbuster Online - Total Access. on: November 04, 2006, 04:36:49 PM
I used to be a Netflix fanboy.  In fact, they are a great company.  However, BB has more to offer.  I was getting the 2 movie plan at Netflix for $14/month.  It was fine for me, but Blockbuster started their new deal where you can get 3 movies for $17 a month, plus a free movie every week.  So I basically just doubled my allotment for $3.00.  Response times are pretty much the same as netflix (that was the biggest issue, if it was slower, I would have stayed with netflix)  Now with this new program, it's even better, and  I'll even get more movies.

There are different levels of addiction, though.  In the example you cited, I think anyone would agree that your BIL has a serious problem.    If he refuses to see it as a problem, then he does deserve some measure of contempt.  However, I think it would be more contempt for his stubborness/willfull ignorance of his family's well-being rather than contempt simply because he's addicted.  One doesn't always come with the other.

In my case, I was/am addicted to chewing tobacco.   I haven't hurt anyone else with my addiction.  I haven't yet had any health problems due to my addiction.  It was actually a very relaxing habit that I quite enjoyed.  However, I'm quitting simply because I wanted to save a few $$ each month and I knew that it eventually may lead to some health issues.  What about that sort addiction would deserve to be "looked down on"?

Not trying to troll here, I'm honestly just curious as to the reasoning.

Gratch,

I'm glad you decided to stop chewing tobacco even if it's just because of money.  But one thing that bugs me is this statement  "I haven't hurt anyone else with my addiction"   Now , I don't personally, so I have to ask, are you married?  If you are, you are hurting someone, you're hurting your family.  Maybe not now, but possible down the road.  They are the ones who will have to take care of you because of the addiction.  Even if you're not married, you hurting the average joe, because we are spending millions in taxes to healthcare (hospitals, EMS, county services) because of people's addictions.

I got about 4 hours into it, and so far I'm enjoying it, but theres something missing.  Here are the Pro's and Con's

Pros-

Firaxis really captures the atmosphere
Great Graphics
Sound is authentic
Addicting
Laying track is pretty simple most of the time, with occasional frustrations

Cons-
Gametime is way too fast
Cities do not match Era
Laying track can be difficult at times, especially with signals.  Signals are back, but you can't place them anywhere you'd like, the game does it for you, which sometimes causes huge traffic jams.  In the original Sid Meier's RRT, you could place signals wherever you wanted, that way you can space trains out preventing bottlenecks.
Maps are too small, Cities are not spaced far enough
The game isn't as detailed as the original, there's no bank to loan out money
The game suffers the same fatal flaw that CIV IV did, memory leakage big time.  After 30 mins of play I have to exit the game start it up again, otherwise I'm getting 3 fps.  While the engine is pretty, it has it's problems, and it should have been fixed by now, this is the 3rd generation of it.

3835  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Well, I'm back (with Pics) on: October 03, 2006, 06:55:16 PM
For those who didn't notice Tongue , I was gone since Sep 22nd getting married and on the honeymoon.
The wedding was nearly perfect.  Only one thing went wrong, and it was really minor.  The DJ played our dance song during the unity candle lighting.  So we just swapped out songs.

Our wedding was an outdoor wedding, and that day it was forcasted with gusts of winds in the 20-30 mph range.  Somehow as soon as the wedding started the winds calmed.

That morning I woke up with butterflies in my stomach, and it quickly went away.  I kept waiting to become nervous, but nothing happened.  I was calm all day and before the wedding ceremony.  That really surprised me.  I was actually more nervous on saying my toast than getting married.  I'm glad it was this way, it let me focus on the moment.

We spent about 1.5 hours taking pictures with the wedding party.  Erin and I didn't want to see each other before the wedding so we had scheduled to take more pictures between the ceremony and reception and the next day.  That kinda sucked, because she had to get her hair done again and put on the dress again.  But it was nice.  While we were at the park the next day, there was another wedding going on, and a bystander told us that Erin's dress was more beautiful smile

The wedding started a little late due to people arriving late because of a traffic accident.

The ceremony went perfectly until we got to the wedding vows.  It should have been really easy since we're just repeating after the pastor.  Well, one of the vows were "I will never laugh at you, only with you" (something like that).  We were practicing them in the "groom's" room and I was jokingly saying, "I will always laugh at you, never with you".  Well it came time to say the vows for real, and I slipped.  I actually said the lines that I said in the "groom's room"

This is her reaction...

I had the whole audience laughing, and it took me a second to realize what I had said.

The ceremony went quick and we were both kinda shocked how fast it went and realized we were now married smile

After pictures we headed to the reception.  My side of the family are huge football/sports fans, so I thought it would be cool to have the groomsmen where NFL jerseys over their Tuxedos and the bridesmaids to have pom poms.  We had them introduced and they formed a human tunnel  (like you see the cheerleaders do at football games) while having the FOX NFL theme song played.  After everyone was announced, we ran through the tunnel.  It was a blast.

After that everything was a blur.  The time went by so fast.  The reception started at 6:30 or so, and by 9pm people were leaving.  We had a lot of families with kids, so people were dropping like flies.  By 10pm it was just the wedding party.  So we ended early, and helped clean up a little.  We made our way up to the suite, and spent at least 30 mins taking apart Erin's hair.  Holy shit, that was crazy.   Our wedding party went up to our room and decorated the room with rose pedals, and drew up a bath for us.    After having a little fun, we got to bed by 1am exhausted.

The next day was just as busy, we went to lunch, took Erin to Ulta to get her hair done, I went home to get some stuff done, and picked her up.  We both got back into the tux and wedding dress and headed to the park to take more pictures.  Went back to Erin's parents house and opened up our wedding gifts.  Went home around 10pm, only to realize Erin forgot her make up so we drove back to her house.  Of course this means Erin has to talk with the family once again, and we ended up leaving at 10:45 and arrived at my house around 11pm.  I didn't take my house keys or phone since Erin had her house keys with her.  Well, she left them on the counter back at her parents house.  So once again we drove back.  I'm getting pissed, cuz I'm tired, and we still had to pack and get to bed since we have to be up by 3:30 am for the airport.  We drive back pick up the keys, and head home.  We didn't get to bed till 12:30.  So we had 3 hours of sleep, and it's difficult to sleep on the plane, so we just crashed when we got to the hotel.

At the time it wasn't really funny, but now that we look bad we laugh and wondered how did we survive without fighting smile

So now the honeymoon.

We went to Maui and stayed at the embassy suites.  We check in and found out they upgraded our room since they found out we were on our honeymoon.  We had a great deal to begin with.  Erin's father had a timeshare with them, and he gave us a owner referral package, where it's basically $150 a night for 5 nights, and they pay for the rental car.  We also learn that they have complimentary breakfast (and I mean it's the works, so much food) and complimentary cocktails from 4pm to 6pm.  Well they upgraded our rooms for free and we ended up staying in one of the newly remodeled suites on the top floor (12th floor) with an ocean view.  We find out these rooms are worth $700 a night, we paid $150 a night.  Here was our view...

They also gave us two activity packages for free.  We were only supposed to have one, but they gave us another.  Not only that, we did the timeshare presentation and they gave us $100 in gift cards to use at restaurants, shops or hotel room incidentals.  We used that for Ruth's Chris (awesome steak by the way) and for the internet and a movie.  We end up going to the catamaran (snorkeling adventure) and a luau.  My parents bought us a dinner cruise.  We figured that was more than enough to occupy us, so basically we didn't have to pay for any excursions.

So here's what we did

Sunday - Slept and lounged
Monday - Went to the tropical plantation

-
-
Tuesday - Went to the Luau

-
-
Wednesday- Went to Haleakala Volcano

-
-
Thursday - Went to the catamaran and did some snorkeling at Molokini and went to Turtle Town.  On the way back we saw some dolphins.  Don't have pictures available for that at the moment
-
-
Friday - Went on a sunset dinner cruise

-
-
Saturday - Was exhausted and just stayed around the pool

Sunday was really crazy.  We had to take 4 different flights to get back home.

We got to the airport at 3pm and arrived home at 9:30 am the next day.

Anyways, now we are putting together the apartment, and working on the budget.  I was hoping this week would start to slow down, that's not going to happen.
