Looks like my company will match my donation, but from the note I got it may not reach the foundation until the end of the month so it may not get counted.  I guess they lump all donations together or something like that.

Best of luck!

awesome Thank you!  While this is for the walk, we still fundraise all year.  I tend to stop in May.  You can only ask so much smile  I spam Facebook way more.
122  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [2015] Team Ethan Great Strides --Updated, need your help-- on: May 12, 2015, 03:41:01 PM
My only bump.

Our walk is 4 days away and we are so close to our team goal.  Last year we were around $300 short from our $8,000 goal, and it was my hope that with the addition of new team members that we would surpass it this year.  Right now we are $875 away from hitting our goal.

Today is a very important day for the CF community.  Today is the day that the FDA advisory committee will meet to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the ivacaftor/lumacaftor combination drug (Orkambi) and provide a recommendation to the FDA for or against approval.  This is the miracle drug that I've been talking about the last 5 years.  This is the drug that will directly help Ethan, it's the drug that corrects the damaged cell.  It's the first drug that isn't fixing the symptom, but the cell itself.  The CF community feels that we are close to a cure, and this drug is the first step.  Ethan is 5, so if today's advisement goes through, he won't be able to take it until 12, but it's a start and it's going to help thousands.  This drug is for the people who have most common mutation of CF.  So it's huge news.

This is why I fundraise, this is why I ask for your help each year, because the foundation doesn't receive government funding and relies on fundraising and investing to make things happen.  Can you help?

They're celebrating one million preorders for this game right now, and that just makes me sad. This game could be the best game ever, and CD PROJEKT RED has a well-deserved good reputation, but people are still handing over money for a product they have no idea whether or not will be awesome, great, good, mediocre, or plain bad.

A million preorders is cause for the industry to bow its head in shame and sorrow. This is what our hobby has degenerated into, and it's not looking like it's going to become better any time soon.

Preorders will be fine in two days, after the reviews have been allowed to sink in. At that point the preorder is justified. Right now though, this is a dark day for gaming, and that it's being celebrated makes it even darker.

To those of you who preorder games blindly: Shame on you!

1: I didn't preorder but I do have it waiting to be download, due to the nvida promotion...

2: Really?  Blindly preordering?  It's the 3rd game of the series, people know what to expect from CD Projekt Red.  It's not like it's some new company

3: When has preordering ever been considered bad?

4: We should be more upset about DLC, that has ruined the industry.

So I grabbed it.  Wow it's fast.  Before upgrading I did a benchmark test using 3dmark's firefight.  My old GPU was a XFX R9 270x.  My score was in the 5000's.

My new card, same test, 25k!

Screaming!

I do get some hitching in Arma 3.  I had the similar effect in COD Advance Warfare 2 when I had my R9 270.  I'm not sure what's causing that.
129  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Video Card (should I bite the bullet?) on: May 06, 2015, 09:32:18 PM
So Nvidia just announced that if you buy certain nvidia cards you can get witcher 3 and the new batman game for free.

I have a XFX r9 270 2 GB and looking at a evga overclocked GFX 970.  It has 4 GB of ram, and will work with my powersupply

The question is, is it worth it?

A little history...

I previously had the 6970 from XFX, after about 2 years, it bit the dust.  I had a lifetime warranty and got it replaced for free with the card I have now.  I only had that for 6 months.  It handles most games that I throw, but I there are some games where I have to turn things down.  I was thinking this would be a good time to upgrade, get two free games, and sell my current card to make the deal even sweeter.

my current specs is a i7 (i forget which one, but it's not slow)
8 GB of ram (again not sure on type, but it's not slow)
250 GB SSD
XFX r9 270

What do you think?  Worth the time, or should I wait?

Did you know that Octopus Overlords and GamingTrend have helped raised over $25,000 in the last 6 years to help find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis.  OO\GG continues to make an impact to the CF community, and my family greatly appreciates all of your support, whether it's financially, emotionally, and both.

This year our fundraising event have grown which gave us the opportunity to host our event at Raley Field, home of the Sacramento River Cats, an AAA affiliate of the 2014 World Series Champ, the San Francisco Giants (sorry I had to get that in there for Lorini) It will take place on May 16th.

As you know, Ethan has Cystic Fibrosis, overall, he's healthy, but over the last few years he has developed some form of liver disease.  Right now it's manageable through medications.  This is his first year of school (preschool) and because he's exposed to more kids, he gets sick often, just like other kids.  The part where it's different from most kids, is that his colds hit him harder, and it turns his 2 times a day treatments into 4, causing him to miss school.  We calculated that he has missed over a month of school, and he only goes 3 times a week.  He currently has a cold and a double ear infection that has kept him out of school for over 10 days.  Today is his first day back even though he's not fully well.  It's a preview to whats to come next year when  he starts kindergarten.  It's things that most parents don't have to think or worry about.

So that's where we are at this year, other than getting sick with colds or managing his liver disease, he's doing well, no major complications in relation to cystic fibrosis.  But that can change anytime.

That is why I fundraise.  Fundraising is extremely important to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the money that we raise go towards research towards a cure, new medications and new therapies.  Recently, many of the drugs that I've been talking about the last few years that were in trial are being released this year.  The biggest drug Kalydeco with the combination of  VX-661 will address Ethan's specific gene mutation, and attack the cause, not the symptom.  This has been huge for the CF community.  This drug actually corrects the cells and it has shown tremendous results.  People having a hard time breathing and need oxygen masks, no longer needs it after a few weeks of taking it.  Lung functionality has improved greatly because of it.

But it's not a cure, and that's our ultimate goal.

I tried to keep this short, and I have already failed.  So I'll end here

Will you continue help support my son and 70,000 others worldwide?  If you like to donate, you can visit my page here

Also if you want to know more about CF and how it relates to us you can check out this year's video.  It's a little dry.  I was trying to go for a modern family style, but it didn't work.

@Eco, yeah I find Naedneks opinion strange. When he first said that about the quality, I was wondering if they have some sort of fancy high end Carl's Jr where he lives.

When you compare Carl's Jr meat (heh heh) to other fast food, (McDonalds, Wendys, Jack In the Box) then yes, as I said, it's higher quality then those 3 resturaunts.  I'm not comparing them to In and Out, 5 guys or similar chains, but out of all the fast food, they are the closest to them in terms of quality.
144  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Carls Jr - now in Toronto should I try it? on: April 14, 2015, 04:27:11 PM
Carl's Jr\Hardees is generally a little more than the standard fast food.  Their quality of products usually better as well.  The problem that faces all restaurants is serving it fresh.

CJ is all about being messy.  I mean their slogan in the 2000's was  "If its not all over the place it doesn't belong in your face"

Get the House Dressing when you try the Criscuts.  Their house dressing is awesome.  Don't let them give you their buttermilk ranch, that's stuff is nasty.  Also the house dressing is best when it's cold.  I've noticed most CJ's now keep them at room temp.  Back when I worked there many years ago, we always kept them refrigerated.

Worth a try as long as you're expecting more like McDonald's tier fast food and not stuff like Five Guys or In-N-Out which is a step up.

I recommend you get a Western Bacon Cheeseburger with Crisscut Fries, and ask for a side of ranch dressing to dip your Crisscut Fries in.  Schedule a coronary for later in the day.

Umm, it's nowhere close to being McDonalds quality (or lack of)  I'd rank In & Out Burger just barely over Carls Jr and Five Guys.  CJ's Burgers are pretty damn good for fast food, beats, Wendy's, Jack in the Box, Burger King (did you know BK and CJ uses they same Charbroiler, but CJ's taste tons better, want to know the secret?  Produce on the bottom)

Famous Star and Superstar you can't go wrong with.  If you like your meat dripping in BBQ sauce (I don't) then Westerns are a good choice)  They used to make a great Bacon Swiss Chicken sandwich, but they shrunk it and it's overpriced.

XMBC (KODI) is nice in theory, the problem is, much of the content is created by hobbyists.  Very little support and when Amazon or other companies change things on their end, it breaks on XMBC, and you are at the will of the hobbyist to update/fix it.  For me, I cut the cord, and wanted an environment that would be simple for my wife and 5 year old to navigate.

So, I switched to Plex for my digital library.  I use WMC for live tv shows which I DVR to a hard drive.  Much easier to use and don't have to worry about troubleshooting when things change.  To supplment what Kodi could offer, I have Amazon Stick which gives me almost the same access that Kodi would.

While getting ready for work I was thinking about this more and remembered I only have 1 cemetary.  I'm thinking I need more to cover the range.

One thing about this game is some of the things that are totally unrealistic.  In your real life city where you live, I doubt you have more than one dump servicing your area.  Normally they are regional and trucks haul it from far away places.  But in this game, it's like you need to have multiple dumps to deal with the garbage.

The last Sim City had it right, make the dump have the ability to expand.  It didn't matter about coverage, the garbage came to you from trucks bringing it in.  When the dump got full, you burn, or expand the existing dump to allow for more capacity.

I have plenty of medical centers and the pollutants are all secluded away from residential.  Same with the shit water.  I've seen my medical office sit at empty with no ambulances being dispatched.  Roads are all connected.

Something is wrong, I don't know if it's a bug or I'm missing something...  Any ideas?
