it's because we gamers accepted this practice years ago like the fools that we are.  This was only the beginning in terms of charging people after the sale of a game.  Now we get to deal with microtransaction, and the upcoming paying the developer after buying a used game.  It's not going to stop, because we gamers keep buying into this crap.  Gone are the good days of buying a game and it's yours to whatever you want with.  Gone are the days you get a complete game day one. Gone are the days where you can sell your game.  And this all started at the acceptance of DLC.  Thanks gamers, you really screwed this up for everyone.

People understand how DLC and digital downloads work. Have you ever loaned a friend your DLC or your copy of Minecraft 360?  How is mentioning that even relevant?
... and when have you bought an "Install only" PC game, which chances are has a license key, and then lend it to a friend?

Install is install. The game discs are no longer a standalone product that simply proves ownership based on possession. So yeah ... Steam is the same bloody thing, except when you're done with a game, there is no way to recoup money and pass the game license on. IIRC, PS4 has yet to confirm that used games will play on the PS4. If there is something newer, then I missed it - there was a comment made earlier, but then rescinded by Sony.

I think maybe some people watched a different PS4 reveal - from some of the creepy comments re: Kinect integration, the Sony Eye may or may not also be required - Sony hasn't revealed that information yet - but it also does face recognition, etc.

The Sony PS4 reveal was unimpressive (to me, at least) and since PS3 sales (at the onset) were significantly boosted because it was the most affordable BD player at the time, I'm not understanding the backlash WRT MS going after the multimedia aspect of a product line that has always been targeting the entire entertainment experience. Yeah, more games. I get that - but from a user perspective, the interface and the benefits seem well thought out.

Conversely, their presentation was lukewarm at best, but that doesn't say anything of the product itself. I think their next task is to funnel all questions through a clear, simple and consistent message. They need to stay away from anything that smells of smoke and mirrors.

When I sign in on Steam at my friend's house I can play after the install - it doesn't require me to pay twice.  It should be tied to my account and only allow one instance at a time.

Isn't that what the xbox1 is doing as well.  YOu can bring your game to a friends house, sign in as you and play the game.  What am I missing?  I haven't had the chance to read everything since I was out in the field yesterday and dealing with a sick 3 year old (yay extra breathing treatments).

I'd bet that 95% of people who have an xbox or a ps4 has it connected online...  The other 5%?  Well, times are changing, time to adapt.  I really don't see the issue.  This type of thing happens all the time as technology/features change.

Thanks to those who have already donated.  We have exceeded our goal earlier this week, and we are now pushing for $6,000.  Still time to donate if you like.  One of Ethan's friends who has CF was just admitted to the hospital and now will miss their walk, and his little league tournament.  It's a another reminder how unfair this disease is.

If you would like to donate you can learn how here

early diagnosis global transient amnesia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transient_global_amnesia

Quote
Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a syndrome in clinical neurology whose key defining characteristic is a temporary but almost total disruption of short-term memory with a range of problems accessing older memories. A person in a state of TGA exhibits no other signs of impaired cognitive functioning but recalls only the last few moments of consciousness plus deeply encoded facts of the individual’s past, such as his or her own name.

I think it directly relates to this

Quote
If the definition of a precipitating event is widened to include events days or weeks earlier, and to take in emotionally stressful burdens such as money worries, attending a funeral or exhaustion due to overwork or unusual childcare responsibilities, a large majority, over 80%, of TGA attacks are said to correlate with precipitating events.[8]

There's some stressful stuff going on with her dad.  And my mom obsesses over everything

Mine started off good.  Took the family to the Big Tree State Park, and walked under the mighty redwoods.  Came home and received a call from my dad stating that he's taking my mom to the ER, she can't remember the last 3 weeks.    eek eek eek eek eek

Around 4:30 this morning she started regaining her memory.  I spoke to her this morning and she's sounds very tired, but she remembers most of the last three weeks.  Doing tests to find out what's going on

10  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Team Ethan Great Strides 2013! Can you help? on: May 01, 2013, 05:45:29 PM
All,

For the 4th year in a row, I will be walking in the Great Strides event here in Sacramento on May 18th, raising money and awareness for the CF Foundation. As a participant, I have committed to raise $2,000, with our team goal of $5,000. Last year this time we were at $1,775 and this year we are already over $3,000. With your help we believe we can reach our goal!

Team Ethan is again participating in the 2013 Great Strides Event. What is Great Strides? It's one of the biggest fundraisers the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation runs to raise money for new treatments and research towards a cure of this awful fatal disease. Three years ago last month, we found out that our son who was about 3 weeks old at the time, was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis. Talk about a shock to the system! Since then this will be our 4th year participating in this event that directly helps over 70,000 people who have CF worldwide.

Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections; and obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food.

Because of these walks and similar fundraisers there has been significant breakthroughs for new treatments, research, and support to the CF community. This year there has been some great news on new drugs that will directly help my son and many others and is getting closer for release!

Over the years many generous forum members have helped someone they never met. It amazes me every year the support my family receives. We have a great community that gives back, and I'm always happy to belong to this forum. We all may have our differences, but helping others always prevailed, and that's what makes this forum awesome!

Today, I am asking you to help me reach my goal by making a contribution at my page http://www.cff.org/Great_Strides/KenDean. Please feel free to share this post or link to your friends and family! The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is a highly regarded nonprofit donor-supported organization that relies on donations from events like this and the way they manage their foundation has been used by other organizations due to how efficient they are.

I appreciate your support and generosity, and I will keep you posted on my progress.

Thank you,
Ken, Erin, Ethan & Lila

It's draft time. I guess I'd be more excited if I followed college football, but since I don't, I have no knowledge of incoming players.

I hope 49ers trade some of their picks away since they won't be able to sign all 14.
17  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Tomb Raider on: April 21, 2013, 08:20:57 PM
I only really have two complaints and they're nothing too big

1: I felt it tried too much to be Uncharted.  Uncharted took it to the next level as far as the complete package, while TR just  mirrored instead of trying to push the genre even further.    Still a fun game, but nothing new

2: It took me until about 23 hours in that when you cycle through her guns (hey I didn't mean it that way) that the guns disappear.  So she'd be wielding a huge bow and arrow and all of a sudden I switch to the shotgun and the bow and arrow disappears.  The only thing that stays visible at all times is the pistol.  I know, it's a problem with pretty much all games this type, I just think it's a little more forgiving when it's a FPS, since you don't really see the character.

Other than that, an awesome game!

Just finished the game, and I have to say it's my GOTY so far.  I've never been a big Tomb Raider fan, but this one finally nailed it.

The atmosphere and gameplay was engaging the whole way through.  And I loved the part at the end where she

It really wouldn't make any sense to capture the full performance for our other characters, but not for our star."

Worked well for the latest tombraider.  They had a separate voice actress and stunt woman playing Lara Craft and it was very natural feeling.

Maybe he means a bad port of a  game for next gen consoles for current gen?

As I recall, the console versions looked nothing like the intro demos for BF3.

yes because the intro demos were more than likely ran on high end PC's.

just out of curiosity, are you using the 'alternative' post processing setting?  I hear that one is screwing up the details on close-up objects.
That one I'm not sure.  Will have to look into it when I get done with work today.

I'm not using alternative and some of the textures are pretty bad.  The roses are a good example.  It's like 95% beautiful and 5% bad.

Running at Ultra Settings, 2560x1440 resolution.

I didn't have alternative turned on but I was curious what it would do so I just tried turning it on. Doing so broke even more textures!  The door texture next to where I was standing wouldn't have looked out of place in a 10 year old game.

The alternate mode is supposed to make far away things look great and up close look blurry

So I'm not sure whats going on and I hope I didn't spend $59 on just the Darkness II

looks like Amazon's $30 2K credit can be used towards Infinite's season pass after 30 days has passed.  I think I'm going to wait and grab it then since I reckon the DLC will take longer than 30 days to hit.

To redeem your credit, simply return and purchase a 2K Games digital download (excluding BioShock Infinite, BioShock Infinite Season Pass, and games available for pre-order), and the discount will be automatically applied.

I believe it said all previous preorders would be updated...

Not if you pre-ordered months ago  via Greenman...
Oh thought we were talking about Amazon...

Nope, just preordering in general. If you don't wait until the last minute you miss out on all the jockeying for best pre-order deal. And at that point it's hardly even a pre-order.

Well I know that's the not the case for Amazon.
