1  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Plex or Kodi (xmbc) on: March 23, 2015, 07:57:04 PM
XMBC (KODI) is nice in theory, the problem is, much of the content is created by hobbyists.  Very little support and when Amazon or other companies change things on their end, it breaks on XMBC, and you are at the will of the hobbyist to update/fix it.  For me, I cut the cord, and wanted an environment that would be simple for my wife and 5 year old to navigate.

So, I switched to Plex for my digital library.  I use WMC for live tv shows which I DVR to a hard drive.  Much easier to use and don't have to worry about troubleshooting when things change.  To supplment what Kodi could offer, I have Amazon Stick which gives me almost the same access that Kodi would.

Do you have a cemetery?

While getting ready for work I was thinking about this more and remembered I only have 1 cemetary.  I'm thinking I need more to cover the range.

One thing about this game is some of the things that are totally unrealistic.  In your real life city where you live, I doubt you have more than one dump servicing your area.  Normally they are regional and trucks haul it from far away places.  But in this game, it's like you need to have multiple dumps to deal with the garbage.

The last Sim City had it right, make the dump have the ability to expand.  It didn't matter about coverage, the garbage came to you from trucks bringing it in.  When the dump got full, you burn, or expand the existing dump to allow for more capacity.

So I lost my main city (accidently saved over it) but back then I had about 40K-50k and I would have tons of people dying sick.  Started a new city, currently at 10K and I'm running into the same problem.

I have plenty of medical centers and the pollutants are all secluded away from residential.  Same with the shit water.  I've seen my medical office sit at empty with no ambulances being dispatched.  Roads are all connected.

Something is wrong, I don't know if it's a bug or I'm missing something...  Any ideas?

Right now I'm having a rash of abandoned buildings and health issues.

What speed do you guys play at?

Mostly just max speed, pausing when I need to do something in the game. Sometimes I'll turn it down to the lowest speed when I just want to watch my city in motion.

Wrong game...

9  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: SSD is NOT the way to go for gaming on: March 16, 2015, 04:41:12 PM
I disagree.

Prior to having a SSD I had BF4 or 3 on a standard hard drive.  I would be on a voice chat with a friend who's also playing in the same match and he would be in his game in less than 30 seconds.  For me, it would take close to two minutes before I got in.

Upgraded to a SSD and now I'm in within 30 seconds every time.

Everything is much faster.  It's the biggest improvement on a PC in years.

Yes, the low capacity is a pain, but as time goes on, it's getting cheaper and they are getting bigger.

Here's my latest city (Rockdale) this map is from the workshop, and it's pretty cool, much more imaginative than the stock game.

Looking from the entrance to my city.  Being that this is the only entrance, I had to seriously deal with traffic coming into the city and exiting.  The farmlands produced a lot of produce trucks and it was clogging up my roads.  I first built two 6 lane roads (3 way each way) and it wasn't enough.  I then decided to change these roads to one way.  So each span was in one direction.  That solved my traffic issues.  (One thing the guy did when making the map was placed the entrance and exit the wrong way so it made it more difficult than needed, thank God for elevated roads)

It's a steam game, but you can buy it from different places, and redeem the key on steam.

I guess my point is that with users giving the ability to create content for free, dlc may not play as an important role, or that the developer will need to release something that is more than what the community can offer.
16  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC]Cities: Skylines on: March 12, 2015, 07:11:31 PM
with steamworkshop being heavily used, I think I'd be fine without DLC unless it features being changed/added

This is what modding can do

You don't need to mod to do that. You can do it entirely in-game if you like. Here's an example I made, in-game:

Yes I know, you should check out OO's thread Tongue  I guess I used the wrong terminology, I meant workshop

Sorry guys, this is not fun to watch a team with recent super bowl potential get dismantled like this.

Actually it is kind of fun.  Screw the 49ers ownership.

Yeah, you're right.  to hell with the owners.  It's just unfortunate that it affects people here.  I enjoyed the rivalry.  Hopefully things will be good in a few years for both our teams.

I know my snarky seahawks comments typically generalizes the whole fan base, but you sir, are different.  And you are different from me sadly.  If this was the other way around I'd have a hard time holding back.  I fully admit that.  It's my main fault when it comes to sports.  For me I take football too seriously.  It's the one of the few things I obsess over.  I don't know where I'm going with this, but wanted to say thanks for always showing class

Most North American releases are at 12 midnight.  When that happens, I typically get the game at 9pm the day before the release date.  But because this is a European game they are releasing it based on their time.  Australia has to wait till the 11th...

Hey, I know this forum well.

Well we tried the natural fingernail polish that had cayenne pepper and citris extract.  He didn't flinch.  Moved on to a nail polish that is used for nail biting and sucking, but it was chemically based.  He could care less, sucked away.

So, we'll just have to wait it out.  Gonna try the reward stuff.  We did that recently for staying in his bed all night and that worked.  Now it's time to try it with thumb sucking.

It's on ORIGIN, a system that is just as stable as Steam and gets an unfair reputation.  It's also the only platform that has a refund policy on digital games.  You won't find that on Steam.

And I'm not talking bad on Steam, steam is just as great.

I am likewise following and very interested, but a little cautious, especially after the latest SimCity debacle.

I'm particularly interested in knowing how the simulation, traffic, and difficulty holds up as city size increases. So far, all the comments and Let's Play videos I've seen have dealt with small, starter communities where it's obviously pretty easy for things to go smoothly. If anyone sees anything that talks about the later parts of the game, I'd love a link.

- Ash

The person who did the lets play video I posted had a live twitch feed yesterday and he had a huge city.  He had traffic issues, but was able to improve his road systems to address the problem areas.  The game itself didn't seem so difficult, but he could have been playing with the included cheat mode on that gave him infinite money.

In the video I posted he said the game was challenging.  So far I haven't seen any challenging aspects, but most of my time viewing was early on in the game where not everything was unlocked.

I preordered, for $21, it was a no brainer

This game is coming out next week, and yesterday was the day the embargo lifted.  Lots of lets play type videos are now out in the wild, and I must say it looks awesome. has it for $21 if you are a VIP member.

Check it out.

36  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Thumb sucking on: February 27, 2015, 07:23:46 PM
No, it's not me...

My 5 year old still sucks his thumb.  It's a comfort thing as well as habit.  I know it's bad for the teeth, and in all honesty I wouldn't care so much if he didn't have Cystic Fibrosis.  I'm more worried about the germ factor and the increased risk of getting sick.  That has more of a detrimental effect to his health than worrying about his teeth in my eyes.  When he's sick, it means more treatments, more fights, and missing school more often.

We told him when he turned 5, he has to stop sucking his thumb.  We gave him a weeks notice, and for the first few days, he did stop for the most part.  Occasionally we'd catch him, and when we made him aware of his habit he would take it out without a fight.  A week later he's back at it and says he can't stop.  So there's some options that I've seen.  One of them I like is nail polish.  They make natural ones where uses pepper extracts but I heard they are not as effective.  The other's are chemically based, and my wife doesn't like that option, fearing he'd be ingesting them.  I'm thinking of trying the natural one first and if that doesn't work then move up to the chemical one if needed.

How did you get your kids to stop?
