Twitter and social media is a big part of this job

Up your twitter game. They are looking for you to put your money where your mouth is.

This is what I'm thinking, and I've been forcing myself to be more active on twitter in posting. But I don't use my twitter profile to build an audience and most of my friends aren't on twitter. So I have 7 followers, and 5 of them are spam.

Quote from: Suitably Ironic Moniker on February 18, 2013, 11:11:10 PM

I think the bigger reason they are following you is to make sure you aren't posting stupid or offensive tweets, similar to how employers look at people's Facebook pages.

When I saw they were following me I did a mental rundown of my recent tweets to make sure I didn't say anything that made me seem like a giant douchebag.

Quote
As for your second question, a phone call is always the safer, and best, way to follow-up; it shows that you care more than an email or tweet would.

Hmm... Good point. But this is always the hardest part for me. What the hell do I say in the follow up? "Hi, I'm msteelers and I applied for this job. So... what's up?"
42  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Potential new employer is following me on twitter... on: February 18, 2013, 10:18:36 PM
So I applied for a job last week, and now that company is following me on twitter. I didn't mention anywhere in my résumé or cover letter about my twitter account, but I did start following them after I applied for the job. I thought maybe they followed me simply because I started following them, but that doesn't seem to be the case as they have a couple thousand followers but only follow about 400.

Now I feel pressured to perform and be entertaining. What are they looking for? Twitter and social media is a big part of this job, but this is my personal twitter account that I use essentially as an RSS aggregate. I don't use it in the way that I would if I get the job.

Also, I want to follow up on my application. The person in charge of hiring for this position is fairly active on twitter himself, even though its a separate account from the one that is now following me. Should I send him an email, or try to reach him on twitter?
43  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: So How's Your Week Going to Be? on: February 12, 2013, 09:55:35 PM
Bah. I just found out the contact for the Pittsburgh job is not the same guy that I interviewed with before.
44  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: So How's Your Week Going to Be? on: February 12, 2013, 08:39:54 PM
I applied to two different jobs lately, both of which would be a big step forward in my career. One job is in Orlando where I have a connection to people inside the company, and I know they have recommended me and I've even exchanged brief emails with the person in charge of hiring. He is going over resumes this week, so I could hear something from him any day now. The other job is in Pittsburgh. I actually interviewed for a similar job with this same company back in August, so in addition to applying for the job I sent an email to this guy in the hopes that he would remember me.

So my week will be spent with my phone in hand waiting for either an email or a phone call. I can already tell this is going to be a long week.

Half of the team quit, but I don't remember migrating hosts.

It's a shame the video cut out. At least I was there to see it.

I pulled the trigger and got a game in with hark this morning. I'm not very good, but I enjoyed it and hark was good about explaining some of the strategies and what I should be attempting to do. I'm going to try to sneak away from work a little bit this afternoon and get in another game or two.

It's frustrating when you miss with a high percentage chance, but that's the nature of probability.

However, I missed once on a shot with 100% chance to hit. Now THAT was rage-inducing.

50  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [Movie] Next Bond Movie - Skyfall! on: November 19, 2012, 12:43:39 AM
Saw it last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. This despite having a terrible audience to watch it with. They sat through the 20 minutes of previews just fine, but as soon as the movie started there were people constantly leaving their seats, coughing throughout the movie, and the couples in front of us and behind us talking in Spanish. Even a cell phone went off at one point.

Still, great movie.

My amazon copy came in yesterday (sorry teggy) but I couldn't get in any multiplayer due to lack of Internet. I was glad to see that there is the ability to do the multiplayer side with bots, so I messed around in that for a bit before loading up zombie mode. I strongly dislike the zombie modes in the previous games, but the changes sounded encouraging. I played one game of zombies, and it felt worse than the previous versions. No thank you.

That left single player, which is fairly "meh". That makes it one of the better single player campaigns. The RTS sections are by far the weakest point. They are fun, but are very out of place when thrown in to an already confusing storyline.

I hope to get some multiplayer in tonight, assuming everything is still up and running.

The game should be at my house when I get home from work today. I will be attempting to get some multiplayer in if the servers are cooperating. Feel free to join or send an invite if you want.

I'm msteelers on the 360.

I'm not looking forward to the next couple of weeks as a steelers fan. Ben has an "unusual" shoulder injury and could be out a couple of weeks. It couldn't have happened at a better time on the schedule either. Next three games are Ravens, Browns, Ravens.

Feeling a little too good after beating the Giants??

Sadly, it's the opposite. I had a little bit of a sore throat when I went to sleep. I had assumed it was from shouting during the steelers game. Unfortunately, I woke up feeling like I got run over by a semi truck.

I really want AssCreed3, but I'm still hooked on xcom, and I have borderlands 2 waiting on the back burner. With my birthday and Christmas coming up, I might just put it on my wish list and hopefully focus on what I already have.

I might have to restart my ironman campaign after a few brutal missions.

I've made it very far into the game. I assume I'm almost at the end, because I have unlocked the achievement for performing an autopsy on every type of creature. And somehow I have yet to lose a country in the council. However, I have felt that this thing was loosely held together with some duct tape and bobby pins, and this morning it all fell apart.

In the span of 3-4 missions my entire force was nearly wiped out. The worst was this last mission. I had just gotten through a tough encounter without taking any damage. Half the team was reloading, the other half on overwatch. But then, out of nowhere, two of the alien giant robots were literally in the middle of my force. I don't know how they got there. They weren't shown walking in. They didn't trigger any overwatch, or anything. It's like they just appeared out of thin air. It was a bloodbath, no survivors.

I now dont even have enough healthy soldiers to field a full squad so I'm thinking about starting over, this time knowing that I need to focus on some workshops early. I don't have any, and its too expensive for me to build any equipment or new guns. I'm stuck with the weapons and armor from the mid game.
60  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360/PC/PS3] XCOM: Enemy Unknown on: October 21, 2012, 10:04:13 AM
I had my second moment in my iron man game that made me want to load up an earlier save. The entire mission I was extremely unlucky. Soldiers routinely missed relatively easy shots, while the enemy made what seemed like damn near impossible shots every single turn. Muton firing from a lower elevation to an assault soldier who is behind full cover? No problem! Two successful shots in a row, equaling one dead assault soldier.

The worst was my only psi officer getting killed that mission. I had just unlocked his psi ability, and tried to use it against a Muton. The shot was given a 100% success rating... and it MISSED!

Outside of that mission, my only other gripe is that I just cannot recruit any assault soldiers. I bought the perk where all new recruits come with their first level, and I'm getting swarmed with heavy, supports, and snipers, but no assault. I have one assault soldier in my entire force.
61  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360/PC/PS3] XCOM: Enemy Unknown on: October 20, 2012, 02:14:35 AM
I'm playing on Normal Iron Man, and I just don't have many assault guys. The rookies seemed to only want to become snipers or support units. That forced me into the habit of bringing a heavy with me on almost every mission, and now I think I'm starting to see how they could be really effective. I don't use the rocket launcher much, but suppressing fire is nice for pinning a target down while I move my other units around to try and flank it.

My normal squad usually consists of 1-2 snipers, 1-2 support units, 1 heavy, 1-2 assault units if any are available. It seems to be going well. The biggest screw up I had lately was putting a heavy a little too far out in front. I got impatient and opened a door instead of ending the turn when I had both of my moves left. Inside the room were three sectiod commanders. They took control of my heavy, who triggered overwatch on both my sniper and assault guy. Both shots hit. Now I have one less heavy.

Next play through I'm going to try and get more squaddies into the mix early, not every one need to be a Col.

I'm in my first play-through and this is what I'm trying to do. I'm making sure to bring 1-2 rookies each mission to try and get a well rounded group of soldiers to pick from, rather than 1 super squad of people. The problem is the rookies keep getting killed.

I finally got a chance to fire up my 360 and give this a shot. I only had 20 minutes or so, but I got through the first two missions. I was worried about the control scheme on the 360 compared to the PC, but so far I haven't had any issues. I'm very excited to get back to it. Sadly, it might not happen until Tuesday.

Any suggestions on the early research? The first option was weapons or armor, and I went with armor.

The 360 version is at home waiting for me, but I don't know when I'm going to be able to play. I'm working from 5:30am until 4:00pm every day, then coming home and doing prep for 2-3 hours for the next day. Luckily it's only a week, but having a shiny new game, plus borderlands 2 staring me in the face makes it sting a little more.

68  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: So how you doing? on: September 18, 2012, 03:33:06 PM
Things are fairly good, but my professional life is dragging me down. For months I've been applying to jobs all over the country, and haven't even got so much as a phone call in return. I finally did get a call back for what would have been a dream job, or at least a step in the right direction. I had a phone interview that I thought went well but was told that they were reviewing internal candidates, which sent up a red flag that I probably wouldn't get the job. Still, the guy said he would give me a call one way or another and to email him with any questions. Several weeks later and no response from him, and no reply to my email.

In the meantime, I've run out of work at one of my jobs. There always seems to be at least 1 or 2 days a week where there is nothing for me to do so I stay at home and feel like a failure at life.

Thankfully, almost everything else is going good right now.

Record the game, go on football blackout until after the dinner. I have to do the same thing for the Steelers and Jets game today. I probably won't be able to watch it until 10 tonight. I'm not happy about it, but it's better than  nothing.

So for some reason I'm playing this again, and enjoying it. I'm somehow able to keep all of the nonsense from bothering me this time around, and I'm having a lot of fun and playing pretty well. If anyone is still playing on the 360 and you see me online (msteelers there as well) send me an invite. I don't have any of the new maps though.

In an effort to avoid buying Madden only to be disgusted with the game a few days later, I will be getting the game via gamefly at some point this week.

I will be taking a look at rock band blitz. Ive been playing rb3 recently with the gf, otherwise I would probably pass on it entirely.

The Harry Potter series is not only a favorite film collection, but a true achievement in the translation from text to big screen.

I'm one of the few people I know that never read the Harry Potter books. Seemingly all of my friends have read the series and are huge fans. Due to the sheer number of my friends who read the series, I always found myself going to the Harry Potter movies (sometimes even midnight premieres). And I have to say that the movies do almost nothing for me. It's one of those odd things where I can see why people would love it, but I just can't get excited about it. I don't know if that's because I never read the books, or if Harry Potter is just one of those things that's massively popular that I just don't "get".
78  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: What are your favourite series of films? on: July 29, 2012, 08:40:17 PM
I think the Avengers movies are up there for me. Throughout high school I would talk with my friend about how awesome it would be if they signed actors to their characters instead of just one film series. I've enjoyed each of the movies so far, and hope that they can continue to put out great movies.

And the fight just didn't show anything which made me think "oh he is powerful" - well in the second fight he does punch cement and break it but that was awful late in the movie to convince me.

I remember Bane doing several (little) things throughout the movie which hinted at just how strong he really was.

Spoiler for Hiden:
In the first scene he almost effortlessly breaks out of his handcuffs. They might have been zip-ties, but either way it was impressive. Later he crushed a guys neck with his hand, caught batman's punch, crushed his helmet, etc. etc.

It was enough that very early on in the movie I had the thought that this was the most "comic booky" of the trilogy, and Bane was way stronger than anyone else in the films. Batman has done some crazy things, but he also has a suit that allowed him to do some of those things, like bending a gun barrel in the first film.
80  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Wireless Router Advice on: July 20, 2012, 03:47:48 PM
Hi guys. I need some advice on a wireless router. I've been using a Linksys Wireless G Router (WRT54G2 V1 model) for several years now. I bought this when I was living in an apartment, but now I'm in a bigger house and we are looking to upgrade the router so that it can reach the opposite side of the house.

My step-father went out and bought a Linksys E2500 Dual-Band N Router. I checked out some reviews for it, and one of the knocks against it was that it had a very limited range. The CNET review said it should be limited to a small apartment or dorm. Does anyone have any experience with this router, and can you confirm if the range is as bad as the review makes it out to be? Do you have any suggestions for a router we can look for?

Thanks!
