Launch build is going live at noon CST on Thursday.

Interesting poll on the Game Tester forum:
Question: Would you play based purely on game mechanics, not Star Wars Lore?
Yes: 926    51.25%
No: 881    48.75%

In truth I don't think I would.

Interesting poll, but I'm not sure what there is to learn about it. My answer to it is no, but I enjoyed the game mechanics. A familiar lore/setting is important. Just look at football games. Madden isn't very good, but it has a huge fan base largely because of the NFL licenses. Better football games have come out without that license, and barely are a blip on the radar.

Gamefly is offering to let me keep this for only $35.99 already...I wonder if it's not doing so well?

I got the same email from them. I didn't have to game the system in order to get revelations, which is odd for a new game. I returned both BF3 and COD back to gamefly the Friday after revelations came out, and it was sent to me almost immediately. So either Gamefly overestimated the demand for this title and ordered way too many copies, or the overall demand is really low.

I really like this series, but this is easily the weakest since the original. Hopefully it's because we've already spent two full games on Ezio and that timeline, and not because of the yearly release cycle of death.

Having never spent a lot of time in any previous mmos, I think it says a lot about this game that all I wanted to do today was jump back in and keep playing. Hopefully work picks up so I can afford to get this at launch.

Between the holidays, Assassin's Creed, and the Star Wars beta, I haven't played any COD in awhile.

Ok, not completely true. My step-brother and I did our annual Black Friday "Drink Beer and Play Games While the Wives/Girlfriends/Others Go Away" Day. We had some people with us this year that barely play console shooters so we couldn't take them into the public matches, and the private matches started becoming boring after awhile. So we switched over to the Survival mode, and I am surprised at how much I liked it. I never cared for the zombie mode, but I can see myself spending several hours in this. If anyone ever wants to give it a shot let me know.

I'll get more time for video games this week, so send me an invite if you see me on.
125  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic announced on: November 29, 2011, 12:33:15 PM
I ultimately got my Jedi Knight up to class 11, and then fired up a bounty hunter and got her up to level 6 before I had to leave the game off. Normally in games like these I stick to good characters. Playing evil has never felt right. I think part of the issue is that I refuse some quests because there is no reason a bad guy would do it. "You want me to save your village, what's it worth to you? You don't have anything to give as a reward? Piss off." Then I start thinking of the lost experience, and I go back and accept the quest anyway. I don't have this issue too often as a good guy. It's rare to get a mission where you are asked to straight up murder someone for no good reason. Usually there is some lame excuse that at least gets you to go talk to the target. Oddly enough, the only games I ever finished as an evil character were KOTOR 1 and 2. So maybe I'll be able to work my way through some of the evil storylines.

Grouping was easy to do, even for someone like me who is hesitant to even bother people on his friends list with a game invite. I grouped up in the Heroic Area's, and they were a lot of fun. The only downside was I couldn't get into a group conversation. I think my random partner started the conversation solo rather than waiting for me to join. I would have liked to experience that aspect of the game, so that was annoying. There was also a Flashpoint that I passed on with my Jedi Knight character because I didn't feel like going through the trouble of getting into a group, and I'm kind of kicking myself for not getting to see that aspect of the game.

I even tried PVP for a match. I saw the comments here that said it made it almost unplayable on their systems, so I assumed I was in for a bad experience, but I didn't notice any slowdown in performance. Maybe it was just a non-issue for me, but I'm assuming that my normal system performance is borderline unplayable for everyone else.  icon_lol

The only thing keeping me from pre-ordering this game is money. I spent a lot of money in October/November, and now work is slow and I'm staying home because there is nothing to do. Between two holiday days last week, and being told to stay home yesterday and today, I'm out 4 days of pay.  crybaby
126  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic announced on: November 28, 2011, 05:59:13 PM
Well, there wasn't anything for me to do at work today and I was told to stay home today. The bad news is I miss a days pay. The good news is I am getting to spend some quality time with SWTOR!

I'm sticking to a Jedi Knight and so far I'm really enjoying it. I don't usually play MMO's, but this is getting it's hooks into me. I want to try the other classes, but since the beta is only good for the rest of today I figure I will spend as much time with this character as possible. I'm up to level 9, and just experienced my first crash to desktop. There are also points in the game where my framerate drops to under 10 and the game becomes a slideshow, but for the most part it is running as smooth as I can expect with my current specs. The Jedi Temple seems to be an area where my framerate consistently dips.

Go into the video options and set the shadow quality slider all the way down.  The game ran poorly on my wifes machine , once we did that it ran super smooth.  Her specs are similar to yours

Thank you! That seems to have fixed it. I hope to get some more time in the game today, but this was a bad weekend for me to be able to get any serious play time in.

What are your specs?  I'm playing on a pretty low-end machine this weekend and the performance is okay.  Not great, but playable.

AMD Athlon II X2 240 Processor, 2800 Mhz, Dual Core
RADEON HD 4550 video card
3 GB Ram

It's not built or optimized to be a gaming machine, but was able to run games like Civ V, Rift, DC Universe before I added the video card today (albeit poorly). These games run much better with the new video card, but SWTOR was still choppy. I'm sure my processor needs to be upgraded, but I don't necessarily have the cash right now to immediately upgrade that, and based on the minimum requirements for SWTOR I thought I could get away with just upgrading my video card.
129  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic announced on: November 26, 2011, 09:04:27 PM
Well I'm still having trouble running the game, and I'm wondering if it is due to lag instead of my computer since I should meet their requirements now to play the game. Unfortunately, it's borderline unplayable. Hit one of the WASD keys to move, and there's a significant delay before my character actually does anything. I don't need it to look pretty, but I want it to at least be somewhat smooth.

Crap. I got in no problem, but it doesn't look my computer could handle the graphics. My computer is old and not optimized for gaming, but it was able to handle rift and dc universe pretty well. Unfortunately this was borderline unplayable. I'll look into upgrading my computer, but unless I can do it for really cheap I'll have to pass.

After spending a lot of time trying to figure out what I would need to update my computer, I think it boiled down to just needing a new video card. So I ran out to Best Buy, picked up a new one, and got it installed. This queue screen is gorgeous.

Finally have a moment to sit down with the beta, but it's downloading a couple of last minute updates. I thought I already had this, but oh well. As long as it doesn't take another 6 hours I guess I can't complain... too much anyway.  icon_wink

Depending on how this weekend goes I'll preorder the game and join the villains guild. But it's looking like I won't get to play at all until Saturday.

Assuming my computer can handle the game, I'll join up for one of the guilds. I've never really put too much time into an mmo, so I'll need hand holding anyway.

The previous Assassin's Creed games have been some of my favorite of this generation, but this game hasn't truly pulled me in yet. I'm still very early on in the game, so I'm still in the tutorial section of the story. Still, these tutorial missions aren't very good and if I was a new AssCreed player I would probably stop playing.

My biggest problem though is that so far I feel like this game has suffered from the "adding stuff for no reason because it's a sequel and we feel obligated" syndrome. Outside of the hook blade, none of the new stuff is very interesting (so far).

Even the hook blade isn't that great at the beginning (I assume it gets better).  Frequently, it's just an extra step when jumping to another rooftop.

I think being able to use it while running away from some guards could be pretty good. You're right about the climbing though.

Everything looks like it installed fine. I tried to go to their forums to see when the stress test weekend officially started, and it looks like their website is down again for maintenance. Just an FYI if you are still trying to update your account and download the client.

We were at that game. I got season tix since it's close, cheap for a pro sports team and family friendly (my boys love the fights). I think I was also at the last Pens game down here when Crosby got into a fight. The place went nuts.

We had quite the sports weekend. HS football playoffs on Friday night, hockey Saturday and Fins game on Sunday and I don't even really like sports!

I must apologize to you then. I was probably the obnoxious drunk in the upper section. Those damn Molsen's caught up to me quick.

Which HS game were you at? I do radio for the high school teams up on the treasure coast. Our teams did not do well.

Last night I installed what was downloaded, and it brought me to a log in screen. When I tried to log in nothing would happen, so I figured that was as far as it would let me go since it's not the weekend yet. I closed out that window, but when I tried to open it up again last night it was giving me an error saying it couldn't open. So I uninstalled it and downloaded the installer again. I just now tried to open it again and it let me back in to the log in screen, but it says my account needs to be verified. When I click the link I can see it is trying to take me to a security question screen, but it can't get past the first page of the website. They must be getting hammered.

This is why I stick mostly to console gaming, but I loved the KOTOR games and I'm really excited for this. I'm even willing to upgrade my computer if needed.

Crosby returns tonight!

I can't believe it has been nearly a year since Sid last played a game, and just wish I would be able to get tickets to tonights game, but that just isn't gonna happen.  Looking at Stubhub, there are only 50 tickets up for sale, with the lowest price being around $150, similar prices on the pens ticket exchange site.

I imagine even on TV folks will be able to hear a collective gasp the first time Sid gets hit, and then a collective sigh when he shakes it off.

We went to see the Pens Saturday night against the Panthers. We were all hoping Crosby would return that night, but instead he sat out and we even got the back-up goalie instead. Then the very next game Sid comes back and scores 4 points?  crybaby

I only saw the play once, but I'm not sure why there is so much confusion on the call. From what I saw he bobbled it, gained possession as he was falling to the ground, and lost it again as soon as he hit the ground. That pretty clearly falls under the "going to the ground" rule and it seems the right call was made.

Is there a reason that people are complaining over this? All of the talking heads are calling it a bad call, so did I miss something?
147  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Call of Duty:Modern Warfare 3 on: November 17, 2011, 01:19:45 PM
I had a blast playing Gun Game with everyone last night, even though it should really be called "How Is Hark Going To Win This Time?"

It also has helped me to develop a new strategy for staying alive. If you see someone shooting at you... jump! Your jumping will likely make some of the bullets miss you, as well as disorient your opponent. If they are still shooting at you when you land, hop again! It's a surprisingly effective tactic, and after awhile you'll be hopping all over the map just like a bunny.

Note: I won exactly once, so the strategy described above may not be that great at actually winning, but it does seem to drive the opponents slightly crazy.

Just downloaded the f2p and started this morning. I don't play many pc games, or mmo's either. I spent a few weeks in city of heroes back in the day, and a few days of rift, and that is the extent of my experience.

I enjoyed the hour I played this morning though. Maybe I'll stick with this as a change of pace from cod for a little bit.

What an incredibly frustrating evening of play. Several matches, several different party leaders, and several different rooms... all with the same shitty lag.

EDIT: Wow, am I an idiot. I just looked down at my task bar and saw that I was downloading the DC Universe Online client, a 14 gb download. No wonder lag was shitty for me all night.  retard

At least, I hope that was it. It was easily the worst night of lag I have had.

Im toying with the idea of spending some time with each of the weapons. Maybe I'll do that tonight before settling in with the assault rifles.
152  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Call of Duty:Modern Warfare 3 on: November 15, 2011, 03:54:29 PM
The scar definitely has low recoil even without kick, so two attachments is a solid option. Although I personally found focus to be more beneficial. Being able to continuously put bullets on target even while getting shot has made a noticeable difference in the number of encounters I win.

I didn't get to play at all this weekend, but I'm looking forward to getting some quality time with my shiny new type 95 AR tonight after work.
153  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Call of Duty:Modern Warfare 3 on: November 15, 2011, 03:14:57 PM
I have had a lot of success with the silenced scar. The silencer keeps you off their radar whenever you shoot, which is a surprisingly effective way to remain hidden. And even though I am usually terrible with iron sites, I find that I really like the scars iron sites, which allows me to take kick or focus instead of two attachments. If you don't like them, I would go silencer and red dot. I find the heartbeat sensor to be largely useless when compared to other attachments.

Spent a little over 3 hours in MP with fellow GTers and had a blast. My gripes with the game are the same ones from the previous 50 COD games: hit detection and that f*cking knife.

Got up to level 20 using just the assault rifles. So far I really like all of them. The M4 and M16 were great. The 4th assault rifle was ok, but I quickly moved away from it. My favorite so far is the silenced SCAR with the kick attachment. Silent death with no recoil? Yes please.

Can't wait to jump back into the fray tonight.

Spoiler for Hiden:
the story was told out of order. We first meet dima when he fails to stop the Paris bomb. We then see him again when Blackburn recounts how he first met dima and found out about the bombs.

I thought the single player was ok, but felt like all of the big moments were duplicates from previous call of duty games. The final level was exciting though. I will give them that.

I do think the difficulty on normal was a little too high.
