$2 for each of those games isn't bad at all imo.

This. The wife and I will be purchasing this plus a second controller as soon as it comes out. The only thing it's missing is Duck Hunt.

Pathfinder Adventures by Obsidian released today. Its a card-based strategy game. You can download it for free, or pay $24.99 to unlock just about everything. Otherwise, you can accrue gold to unlock character, chests, etc. The game looks very robust, and although I am still confused on a couple rules, I'm really enjoying it so far. I may just drop the $25 to support Obsidian.

Is there a pay wall at some point, or can I play some of the campaigns for free?
4  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / EA Access - worth it? on: March 23, 2016, 12:02:49 PM
Sorry if this topic has been brought up already. I did a search but couldn't find a thread on this at all.

Anyone sign up for EA Access? Is it worth it? There are a few games on there I would like to play. Getting to play Dragon Age: Inquisition alone might be worth it for me. At $5 a month or $30 a year it seems like a decent deal.
5  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC/PS4/XB1] The Division (Tom Clancy) on: March 21, 2016, 01:26:17 PM
I'm still getting a ton of errors when playing. I get Delta and Mike errors every time I play, and now I'm starting to see the entire game freeze, then crash to the dashboard. Searches online say that the error codes I'm getting are server side issues, not on my end.

Still, I'm loving this game. The DZ has already led to several great moments when in a good team. And the main missions stay challenging thanks to hard mode which scales the bad guys up to your level. I've dumped a ton of hours into the game and I feel like I've barely scratched the surface.

I just finished unlocking the 3 branches of the base of operations. I think I'm level 7. When can we go into the DZ?

The game crashed twice on me early on last night, but once I got to Manhattan everything was fine. I managed to get in about an hour without any issues, and actually enjoyed the game quite a bit. Hopefully I'll be able to get in a game with others at some point.

PC or console? I'm on PC.
I was on last night from around 7:30PM to 10PM with no issues and again today from 12:30PM-1:30PM.

XB1

It dumped me when I got into the Safe house a couple of times. Then it kicked me during a matchmaking session, and again when I tried to go to Manhattan.

Only lvl 3 because every time I try to sit and play I end up getting booted from the game. With my limited playtime, it's discouraging to spend most of the time trying to just access the damn game.

The gameplay hasn't grabbed me yet either, but I'm willing to chalk that up to my problems staying in any game for longer than 15 minutes.

I did hear that it was pretty good. I'll likely hold off until the new game comes out in November before diving back into the franchise, but there's always the chance that I'll fall off the wagon.

Fallout 4 is the first game that has made me actually want to save up for an Xbox One. I haven't upgraded to the new consoles yet because of saving for a wedding. Now we are in the process of buying a house, but getting a new console sooner rather than later seems like an actual possibility.

Yeah that last scene was a fantastic cliffhanger!  The whole episode was pretty cool and action packed, well worth the wait.

But to Turtle's comment, I'm not sure where you are getting the idea that the ratings for the show are good.  I just looked at the ratings this morning and last week's ep was around 4 million.  Considering that was the lead-out from Avengers, I was expecting a lot more.

But there was no compelling reason for people to watch Avengers and then rush back to Agents of Shield. Not like with The Winter Soldier, which made a lot of people (myself included) go back and start watching the show again. If anything I would expect ratings to drop as AoS viewers wait to see Avengers in the theater before coming back to finish the last two episodes.

A bunch of games are 50% off right now. Monument Valley is an excellent game if you haven't downloaded it yet. I picked up Final Fantasy VI. It's been on my list for a couple of weeks now, although I'm not sure when I'm going to be able to actually dive into it. My ipad play time has been dominated by reading Marvel Unlimited lately.
25  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [Movie]Captain America 3 on: May 08, 2015, 12:36:02 PM
That synopsis sure sounds like this is an Avengers movie, and to be honest Civil War makes much more sense as an Avengers movie and not a Cap't America movie. This is total speculation, but I wonder if they are making this a Captain America movie to satisfy contract verbiage with Chris Evans.
26  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [movie] The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron on: May 03, 2015, 01:09:02 PM
I saw this last night in IMAX 3D. Great movie! Not as good as the first Avengers, but it met my ridiculously high expectations for what I thought the film needed to be.

Minor spoilers from the opening scene.

Spoiler for Hiden:
I loved the opening scene. One of my favorite moments in movie history was from the original Avengers movie. The long "single shot" scene that seamlessly flowed from hero to hero fighting throughout New York. I thought it was really smart that Whedon opened up Age of Ultron with a similar shot. I also really liked that the opening scene is a direct hand-off from where Agents of Shield left off.

My big concern going into the movie was the massive cast of characters. It seems like every character introduced so far in the MCU made an appearance, but I never felt like characters where crammed in just to satisfy a checklist. It's a tough task to balance that many characters, and this movie does it as well as it could have. In fact, I felt like they should have featured some more characters.

Spoiler for Hiden:
Where the hell was Falcon!? He was the only hero I can think of that wasn't in the final fight. Early in the film he says he is content looking for a missing person and that Avenging isn't his style. But then he is shown to be part of the New Avengers at the end of the film. What changed his mind? Maybe his part in the final fight ended up on the cutting room floor. That's the only thing that made sense.

And I like how even with such a large cast, Whedon can still focus in on a certain character throughout the film. In The Avengers he said it was his goal to make people like the Hulk. I feel like he went into Age of Ultron to do the same thing with...

Spoiler for Hiden:
Hawkeye. He was the last of the original Avengers to not be fully fleshed out. All had either received their own movies, or been fleshed out in previous films. Like most people, I assumed he was going to get killed off. I did not enjoy the "redemption" of Quicksilver though, mainly because he didn't do anything that required redemption. Throughout the film the twins only did what they thought was best. They viewed Tony Stark and the Avengers as a threat to the world. Once they realized Ultron meant to blow up the entire planet they switched sides in an instant.

Other moments I loved:

Spoiler for Hiden:
"Language" and the running joke throughout the film.

The group attempting to pick up Thor's Hammer. Even though that entire scene is basically in the trailers, I still loved it.

And that scene directly set up Vision picking up the Mjolnir later in the movie. The entire theater gasped at that, myself included. This might be my single favorite moment from any of the MCU movies.

"Dick move, Banner."

"Go to sleep, go to sleep, go to sleep."

"Avengers A...."

I want to watch it again, but I highly doubt I'll get to see it in the theater again which means I have to wait until the Blu-Ray comes out which is probably not until Christmas.

I suspect to some extent it's a timing thing. Netflix still has four more Marvel series to film and broadcast (including The Defenders team-up) before DD's 2nd season and probably DeKnight couldn't commit to something that far into the future if he has other work lined up. I also don't know what Netflix pays vs. other broadcast networks, could be a factor too.

If Daredevil comes back in 2016 then I think it will air before the other Marvel series finish. The Defenders is scheduled for 2017, but DD getting a second season might put the other series release dates in flux.

Also, the show is spinning off Bobbi and Lance into their own series, so it's possible they'll continue to explore superpowers on Agents of SHIELD, while the new show sticks closer to the original premise.

If true that's a shame. I had heard they were doing a spinoff show, but nobody knew which characters the new show would center around. Hunter has turned into one of my favorite characters. It would be a shame to have him leave the cast.

They need to add a scene back into the Avengers movie where the camera pans over a scene where a bunch of aliens are caught in a web.

Do it, Marvel.

Do it.

I was thinking about this, too.  I know it's too late to add Spidey into AoU, and it depends on the specific deal they have with Sony (how many appearances allowed, etc.), but I fully expect some sort of cameo to be slipped in, even it's just Spidey swinging by in the background of a city street shot.

I think they can do a great after credits scene in the upcoming Avengers film to introduce Spidey and get his origin story out of the way. They could show him getting bitten by a spider, or maybe something else. This is what I'm hoping for:

The video is taken from a body camera on a police officer. The scene starts with the cop coming onto the scene of an old man who has been shot, and a scrawny teenager upset holding the body with a group of people crowding around. As the cop begins to find out what happens the radio squawks with a potential location of the shooter. In the background we can see the teenager slip away. A few moments later we see Spider-Man swinging by the cop in pursuit of the shooter.

Is it weird that this is the crap I think about when I'm driving to and from work in the mornings?

Other games like, The Banner Saga, were split into episodes to keep cost down, but this has the negative effect of numerous people complaining and writing bad review because they are not getting a full game.

I don't remember The Banner Saga being episodic. I paid once and unlocked the full game. My brother is playing now. I'll check with him and see if it has changed.

I've been playing the SimCity Citybuilder for a couple of days now, and I can honestly say I don't even know where to go in order to pay real money for things. Maybe I just block it out because there is a zero percent chance I would ever spend money, but I can't say the IAP are in your face at all.

Is it fun? Is there a real game to it, or is it just another timer reset game?

It's nothing special. At its core I think it's FarmVille with pretty graphics, although I never played FarmVille, so that's more of a guess. There are disaster scenarios that unlock eventually. My playtime lends itself to small chunks spread out over the day, so I'll keep with it and see if there's actually a game here. I doubt it though.

Have you played Simpsons: Tapped Out? Is this SimCity game similar to that? Because my guilty pleasure is Tapped Out. I haven't spent a dime but I've put hours into it. I'm slightly ashamed.

Yes. I've put an ungodly amount of time into that as well, and I haven't spent a dime. The Simpson's at least has a thin story element. SimCity doesn't. But I think the mechanics are similar. You create resources to build/ upgrade buildings so you can unlock new resources to create so you can unlock new buildings to build and repeat until you are dead inside.

I played this a lot over the weekend. It's starts out slowly with a lot of story elements. I almost couldn't make it through, because I found it difficult to keep all the characters in check and know what was going on. But once you break through the gameplay becomes pretty fun and enjoyable.

I used to listen to probably 6-7 hours of podcasts a day while at work. I've cut that way back, but now that football season is here I find myself back up to 4-5 hours a day. Here's what I listen to in order.

Fantasy Football stuff

CBS Fantasy Football Today - My favorite fantasy football podcast. It's the perfect mix between humor and football advice.
ESPN Fantasy Focus - I listen for the jokes and the mediocre fantasy advice.
The Audible - Way too in-depth for my tastes, but they have some good stuff. Especially their team-by-team breakdown during the pre-season.

Other stuff:

The Terrible Podcast - A podcast about the Pittsburgh Steelers. I started listening because their host beat me out for a job I interviewed for a couple years ago. I can't complain, they hired the right guy.
RadioLab - I think this might be the perfect radio program and podcast. I haven't listened to a bad episode yet.
This American Life - Always solid and I rarely regret listening to an episode.
The Nerdist - Chris Hardwick talking with celebrities. When it's good it's really good, but I'll skip a lot of episodes if I'm not interested in the guest.
Mohr Stories - Jay Mohr's podcast. I used to listen a lot more than I do now. He scaled back when he got his daily radio show, and I don't blame him. I'll listen if I know of the guest.
Stuff You Missed In History Class - Good history podcast, but they don't always pick the most interesting topics.
Gamers With Jobs Conference Call - The last of the video game podcasts that I listen to. And I skip more than I listen now, mainly because they focus on PC games and I don't have a PC that can play the games they talk about.
Chain Attack - A good podcast about the table top game Warmachine/Hordes. Honestly though I don't listen anymore because I haven't had time to play the game in several months.
The Daily Show Podcast without Jon Stewart - They are one episode in, and it seems to be a behind the scenes look at The Daily Show. I enjoyed their first episode, but it has room to improve.
