I've been playing the SimCity Citybuilder for a couple of days now, and I can honestly say I don't even know where to go in order to pay real money for things. Maybe I just block it out because there is a zero percent chance I would ever spend money, but I can't say the IAP are in your face at all.
2  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: iPhone/iTouch app and game thread on: December 13, 2014, 12:59:39 PM
I don't play games on my PC, so I picked up Papers, Please last night for my iPad and look forward to spending some time with it today.

I did finish the game yesterday. It was an odd mix where the ending felt incomplete but I was glad it was over because I was ready to move on. I would recommend the game, but I don't think it's a must buy.
4  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: [ios] Banner Saga out now on: October 16, 2014, 08:43:03 PM
Hmm... I might be about halfway through then.
5  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: [ios] Banner Saga out now on: October 16, 2014, 01:39:53 PM
I don't know if they had the names or not. They might have, but I still managed to get confused. I'm liking the game the more I get to play. I might finish it this weekend depending on how long the game is.
6  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: [ios] Banner Saga out now on: October 13, 2014, 12:36:38 PM
I played this a lot over the weekend. It's starts out slowly with a lot of story elements. I almost couldn't make it through, because I found it difficult to keep all the characters in check and know what was going on. But once you break through the gameplay becomes pretty fun and enjoyable.

Initially it's going to be a somewhat traditional gaming podcast but my goal is for it to evolve (sooner rather than later) into something much more interesting, think This American Life or Radio Lab but centered on gaming and other interactive media.

I wish you luck. That sounds amazing, but is going to take a ton of work to get right. Make sure to post the link once it's in iTunes. I'll make sure to download each episode and help with your numbers. I might even listen too.  slywink
8  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Podcasts on: August 18, 2014, 10:14:45 PM
I used to listen to probably 6-7 hours of podcasts a day while at work. I've cut that way back, but now that football season is here I find myself back up to 4-5 hours a day. Here's what I listen to in order.

Fantasy Football stuff

CBS Fantasy Football Today - My favorite fantasy football podcast. It's the perfect mix between humor and football advice.
ESPN Fantasy Focus - I listen for the jokes and the mediocre fantasy advice.
The Audible - Way too in-depth for my tastes, but they have some good stuff. Especially their team-by-team breakdown during the pre-season.

Other stuff:

The Terrible Podcast - A podcast about the Pittsburgh Steelers. I started listening because their host beat me out for a job I interviewed for a couple years ago. I can't complain, they hired the right guy.
RadioLab - I think this might be the perfect radio program and podcast. I haven't listened to a bad episode yet.
This American Life - Always solid and I rarely regret listening to an episode.
The Nerdist - Chris Hardwick talking with celebrities. When it's good it's really good, but I'll skip a lot of episodes if I'm not interested in the guest.
Mohr Stories - Jay Mohr's podcast. I used to listen a lot more than I do now. He scaled back when he got his daily radio show, and I don't blame him. I'll listen if I know of the guest.
Stuff You Missed In History Class - Good history podcast, but they don't always pick the most interesting topics.
Gamers With Jobs Conference Call - The last of the video game podcasts that I listen to. And I skip more than I listen now, mainly because they focus on PC games and I don't have a PC that can play the games they talk about.
Chain Attack - A good podcast about the table top game Warmachine/Hordes. Honestly though I don't listen anymore because I haven't had time to play the game in several months.
The Daily Show Podcast without Jon Stewart - They are one episode in, and it seems to be a behind the scenes look at The Daily Show. I enjoyed their first episode, but it has room to improve.

Free? Awesome!
10  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: [Ios MOBA] Fates Forever on: July 10, 2014, 02:26:14 PM
I'm thoroughly enjoying this game. I have been dabbling with the free characters, and it's enough that I don't think I'm going to spend any actual money yet on the game, but maybe that will change. I see there is a friend system in the game, and as always I'm msteelers on there. Feel free to send me an invite, although my free time to play this is depressingly limited.
11  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: [Ios MOBA] Fates Forever on: July 08, 2014, 01:27:59 PM
Cool. I think ill try this out later.

I've been toying with Sky Force, but I'm really not good at the game. That's probably what has prevented the game from getting its dirty hooks into me.
13  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: Apple banning apps that reward video ads/sharing on: June 12, 2014, 11:44:58 AM
Yeah. Of all the ways they stick advertising in games this is fairly harmless, IMO.
14  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: iPhone/iTouch app and game thread on: June 05, 2014, 12:05:16 PM
Republique was free this morning on the App Store. I'm not sure what the normal cost is or was, or why it's free now.
15  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: X-Men:Days Of Future Past on: May 26, 2014, 12:25:27 PM
I believe you are thinking way too much about the time travel aspect. They laid out the rules for how time travel works, and then stuck to those rules throughout the movie.
16  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: iPhone/iTouch app and game thread on: May 19, 2014, 01:53:42 PM
So Bardbarian is free. I thought it was a paid game before, so I don't know if this is a sale or permanent. Either way I downloaded it yesterday and enjoyed it, even if I'm terrible at the game.

I also downloaded hitman go. It's definitely a unique and challenging game. I've spent $5 in worse ways.

Was it this: http://www.space.com/17628-warp-drive-possible-interstellar-spaceflight.html

That article claims the warp drive would move effectively at 10 times the speed of light. Google tells me the next solar system is 15 light years away... am I right in saying that even going 10x the speed of light it would take a year and a half to get there?

My god space is BIG.
18  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [Film] Christopher Nolan - Interstellar on: May 16, 2014, 07:51:53 PM
I think McConaughey has become one of my favorite actors over the past few months, and that is surprising even to myself. Nolan was already my favorite director, so this is a no brainer for me.

Ummm...Smallville ran for 10 seasons. That alone is enough reason for a network exec to take a chance on this.

There's plenty of material to mine here. There's a big gap between Bruce Wayne the kid and Batman that is ripe for the picking. Commissioner Gordon's younger days is another goldmine. And then you have Gotham itself - there are hundreds of good stories that could come out of that cesspool.

This. If they can avoid the temptation to have a never-ending stream of classic batman villains, I think this has the potential to be pretty cool. Gotham is undoubtedly a great setting, and a young Jim Gordon could be a great character.

With that said I think there's a high probability they screw this up.
21  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: iPhone/iTouch app and game thread on: May 06, 2014, 12:49:52 PM
Sounds like I have to give hitman go a shot. I was turned off by the boardgame aspect, but everyone seems to love it.

I just downloaded Monument Valley, and I'm loving it. The visual tricks they play are very impressive.
22  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV]Gotham - Batman Prequel on: May 06, 2014, 12:45:57 PM
Considering batman is a kid in the trailer, I don't know how that happens unless they jump forward pretty far in the story. I like the concept, and will likely give it a shot if I remember to add it to my dvr.
23  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [Movie]The Amazing Spider-Man 2 on: May 03, 2014, 04:48:40 PM
I went in with ho-hum expectations and came out impressed. The action is solid and the film does a good job with mixing in humor whenever possible.

Where the film fails is coming up with good villains, although I like what they attempted to do. They just didn't stick the landing. Rhino was ridiculous and signing an actor like Paul Giamatti to play that character actually made it worse, not better. I can handle a no-name actor screaming in a really bad Russian accent without actually saying anything, but not an oscar nominated / golden globe winning actor. I got angry anytime his character was on screen, which luckily wasn't for long. Harry's story was better, but accelerated to make sure he became the Goblin at the end of the movie. But they had to, because while Electro's story wasn't terrible, there was no way he could carry the entire movie.

More on the Rhino:
Spoiler for Hiden:
Almost all of his footage from the movie was in the trailer. He shouldn't have been in the trailer at all, because all his character was is a plot device to get spider-man back in action at the end of the movie. I could live with that if the actor wasn't Paul Giamatti.

Still, I would give the film 3-out-of-5 stars. I enjoyed it a lot, which is all that matters. And I'm excited with the set up for the next film.

Spoiler for Hiden:
Sinister Six!

Also, was Harry's secretary
Spoiler for Hiden:
Black Cat?

And there isn't anything during the credits after the xmen clip. So don't waste your time like I did.

25  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [Movie]The Amazing Spider-Man 2 on: May 02, 2014, 02:17:19 PM
Going tonight to see this. I saw the first one and enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I like their take on the character. Tobey's spiderman had the nerdy outcast down to a perfection, but wasn't sarcastic or funny. Garfield has nailed the sarcastic and humor of the character, but he doesn't seem like a nerdy outcast at all. He looks like one of the cool kids. Blend those two versions of the character together and you might have a damn near perfect Spider-Man.

I'm expecting some fun action sequences and to laugh a couple of times during the movie. If I get that then I'll consider it a success.

My first time through I bee-lined for the sector exit and got far enough to unlock an engi ship. Then I saw the in-game tip to explore each sector thoroughly, but I haven't been doing a fantastic job doing that either. I just unlocked a third ship, so I'll try that out on my lunch break.
28  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: [ios] 'FTL: Faster Than Light' is Headed to iPad in Early 2014 on: April 06, 2014, 05:14:33 PM
Having never played this on the pc I am thoroughly enjoying this. I suck at it though. I can't even get far on easy.
29  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: iPhone/iTouch app and game thread on: April 05, 2014, 04:19:02 PM
That does look fantastic. It might have to wait though until I can get some time in with FTL. I have heard way too much about that game, so it's at the top of my purchase list.
30  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: [iOS - also on Steam] Bravelands on: March 20, 2014, 09:34:36 AM
I bought it last night and played for about an hour. It's pretty good and does a decent job ramping up the difficulty so that you can learn via trial and error, but outside of special attacks it doesn't really explain much. I kind of wish there was a text box to explain exactly how the hourglass and shield buttons work. I assume the hourglass is the wait option and the shield provides a boost to defense, but it would be nice to know for sure. The graphics are wonderful though. So far I'm happy with the purchase and having fun.
31  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: [iOS - also on Steam] Bravelands on: March 19, 2014, 12:52:37 PM
Seems interesting. I'll probably download it, as I just got an iPad and I'm looking for some good games. I pretty much only plays iOS games anymore. My biggest concern is that some are saying bravelands is light on strategy.

I also picked up gridiron solitaire. Now to find a way to kick the fiancÚ off the computer so I can actually play it.

I don't know if I can play season 2 as I'm not quite over them ripping my heart out and showing it to me at the end of season 1. Still, I downloaded the demo in case I ever feel like getting seriously depressed.

It's been a fun couple of days. I've been routinely getting 30+ kills with the riot shield and C4 combo, and then went 23-0 in a game of free-for-all which allowed me to have the guard dog and vulture up at the same time twice in the same life.
35  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360/PS3/PC/Wii U/PS4/XB1]Call of Duty:Ghosts on: December 20, 2013, 02:18:10 PM
The new clan war has started. They show you how many points you get for capturing each node. It looks like we can get 25 points for getting 12 wins in hard core search and rescue, compared to 15 points for 80 wins in team deathmatch. If we can get a group of people together we should be able to bang out these smaller nodes relatively quickly.

We have the search and destroy node, which put us in 1st place. It's only 8 wins and gives a ton of points, so when we lose it we might want to focus on taking it back.

Well if I could log into the game I will do my best to recapture the deathmatch node, but it won't fetch my online profile.

We've got the nodes for Team Deathmatch and Kill Confirmed.  Bonus xp and we keep the lead if you keep winning in those.  We get special rewards if we can hold a node for 3 days, so do it!

We can actually defend the nodes? Good to know.

I'm looking forward to taking part in this current clan war. I'm feeling a little sick today, so I'm clearing my schedule this afternoon and I'm just going to sit on the couch and play this the rest of the day.

I'll be getting a copy of this for the 360 for my birthday, which is good because I don't think I would have been able to get it for awhile otherwise.

One last hurrah with COD on the current gen.

I tried the 360 beta and thought it was ok. It's a battlefield game, so I'm inherently going to enjoy it. But my gaming time has fallen off a cliff this year, and the beta didn't do much to make me want to buy this game.
