All in all very happy with the Xbone's overall feature set, capabilities and potential, though slightly disappointed at the kind of "beta" state of things.

That's the exact thought i was getting with a lot of people's impressions

Yeah, I honestly think they were rushed to market to compete with the PS4 launch. I believe that they were originally targeting a Spring 2014 launch, but had to move that up....hence the sort of beta state of the OS. It will get better (it has too) and the games themselves are very good. Ryse looks better than anything on either console. I mean, it's incredible and the only game on either system to make me say "this is true next gen". I don't know how they did it, but MS needs to let all the 3rd parties know what that team did to make it look so good on the XB1.

Sounds like I need to add Ryse to my Santa list?

Well, here are some more impressions of the system after a lot more time with it and the games.

It's a very good, but not great system. As before, my main complaint is the UI. It's needlessly complicated and complex. It really shouldn't be this hard to get around on the system. Also, why is EVERYTHING an app?? I mean come on, settings are an APP? Ugh. I do like the Activity Feed though. It's much better than the "What's New" menu on the PS4.

The exclusive games though, are very good. Dead Rising 3, Killer Instinct and Ryse are awesome. I really love Dead Rising 3. It's pretty much worth owning the system for, IMO. The sheer number of Zombies on screen is incredible. I don't like the microtransaction system in Ryse though, or the one that I have heard about in Forza. Come on, I just spend $60 bucks for the game, don't nickel and dime me MS!!!

As for the multiplats, I'm sticking with the PS4 for those. They look better on there and most of my friends are now on the PS4. Still, the XB1 has nothing to be ashamed about on that front. All the games look good, just not quite as good as the PS4 versions look.

Luckily, both my PS4 and XB1 have not had any hardware problems. Thank goodness.

Anyway, I'm happy I got a XB1. Dead Rising 3 makes it all worth it. smile

Hetz I'm with you there.   I'm taking the same strategy about cross console releases. AC4 will be on PS4, NBA2K is on PS4, and Madden is PS4.

The exception I make is COD and multiplayer games I want to play with the usual GT crew. I'll get those on Bone.   Also exclusives obviously.

The interface is a bit bewildering, but there feels like there's more next gen stuff on this box.  The voice commands have worked extremely well for us.   My wife is in love with this feature because she can just say Xbox On and the whole damned system comes up without her having to wrestle with turning them on.  At night she's laying in bed tired and just says Xbox turn off, and boom...everything including the TV and Cable box turns off.

I love that when she walks in the room and starts asking me a question I can just say 'Xbox mute' and boom.... I'm muted without having to pause or find a safe place to recover the remote.

We really need to have some multiplayer DR3 sessions between GTers.      I haven't played it multiplayer yet.
87  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Xbox One] Games with Gold. on: November 27, 2013, 05:02:26 PM

Well, they actually have to have some games to give us on the Bone before they extend it.    Right now there's nothing.

So, it turns out my issue is a known issue and they need to send me a replacement.  frown  At least they are sending it to me immediately as an advance exchange and then I send my broken one back, but that's still a really shitty launch experience.

According to the replacement support lady I talked with, this issue (getting stuck updating around 79%) is really common for them tonight and they're just replacing the systems whole hog no questions asked.

So, I checked the status of this today and apparently the support lady was not quite so nice and instead put me in for a Standard Exchange instead of the Advance.  Which means it may take up to 2 weeks to get my new console...

 crybaby

As Leo posted on the last page MS are giving free games to those affected from the Disc Drive of Doom, however if your Xbox Bricked Engine you don't get to play on your purchase either,i would ring Customer Support up again, explain everything and demand your free game

Yeah, and if still unresponsive, I would make sure to (very nicely) explain to them that you will be sure to use the 2 weeks you have to wait to go on every single gaming site, article comment section, and forum you can find to rail against the Xbox One and advise people to save their money.

Nicely.   Always be a gentleman.

I'm going for a Seinfeld approach here when he was renting the car and they didn't hold a standard size for him.   They asked him if he wanted insurance and he very nicely said 'yeah you better give me the insurance because I'm going to beat the hell out of this thing'.

I will say the controller was AWESOME. Like the 360 but the sticks feel way better. Why oh why can't Sony give up the horrifically bad Dualshock design?! I am still yet to see a playable demo for either system anywhere, so I still haven't had a chance to hold the DS4.

If you had, you would know that they DID give up on the horrifically bad Dualshock design. The PS4 controller is excellent.

They still have the left stick in the position that is not my personal preference so I remain skeptical, but I would like to pick one up and feel it for myself.
Fixed that for you. Essentially, the controller difference is down to personal preference now.

Nah not really.   The Bone controller wipes the floor with even the improved DS4.    I could play the hell out of some Knack with the Bone controller.

I own both the PS4 and the Xbox One now. My impression of the Xbox One is that it feels like a next generation system whereas the PS4 feels like a PS3 with better graphics.

The hardware that MS presents to us feels better built, and they included a proper headset. When I saw those cheap little ear buds that Sony included with the PS4 I tossed them.  The Azure (Microsoft's cloud) network is effing fast, much faster than PSN. It was rock solid on launch day with no connectivity issues and everything I watched streamed beautifully. (The Wolverine is really good.) Also, after seeing the Xbox One in person, it looks better than the PS4.  The Xbox One's UI is way better than what Sony is doing with their PS4 in my opinion, and the Kinect is a hoot!

The ONLY thing that Sony has going for it is a marginal advantage in gaming performance, and in time I think the devs will close that gap even further. Even now, it's hard to see the difference between the games. With a TV that is properly configured, it's near impossible without doing side-by-side comparisons.

Also, I noticed that the Xbox One supports 36-bit color depth, does the PS4 or is it locked at 24-bit?

And a tip for those of you who are watching blu-ray's on the xbox one, go to the settings menu and make sure to turn on the 24fps setting for blu-ray playback.

If your TV supports 36-bit color depth (if it is an HDTV made in the past 6 years it should) then turn that on and also PC (RGB Full) for wide gamut colors.

My sentiments are pretty much captured in this post.

1 million sold for the XB1 too! That's across all the areas it launched in, I forget where.

This is crazy if you also consider the PS4 sold another million in the US on the 15th. Then it still has Europe on the 29th.

Then the XB1 has other territories to launch in on top of that.

All together that means this new console generation is off to a huge start. We're talking about two launches for systems at full launch prices selling more than individually than any other console launch, but put together that's a lot of consoles out there.

I think with the 7-8 year gap since the release of the last gen, people were just looking forward to this new gen a great deal. Even I was tired of seeing the same developer tricks over and over to mask the aging hardware.

Doesn't matter what system you own, this is a very big freaking deal for all gamers. Even PC gamers will benefit because developers and publishers will more quickly move to the new system spec and techniques.

Death to crappy tablet gaming!

Let's discuss things to configure or do with your Bone:

1.  Change your gamerpic.    Your old one sucks now and is itty bitty.    Go into Settings and change it.
2.  Download Netflix
3.  Download NFL
4.  Download YouTube
5.  Download the Blueray app so you can watch bluerays

The core voice commands seem to work *very* well.   By core I mean 'Xbox on', 'Xbox home', 'Xbox Go to TV', 'Xbox Play Dead Rising 3'.

When you get off the beaten path and start trying to guess commands beyond that is where you get into trouble.    I love the ability to voice on and off and go home and to the TV though.    Those are the ones they HAD to make work and they did.
106  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Xbone LAUNCH DAY!!!! Which system are you getting? on: November 22, 2013, 10:33:03 PM

I think I've figured out that when you install a game, it factors into the % left to install any patches that are needed for it.   So you see 1%, but what you are really not seeing is the patch download that is taking place.

Does that make sense?   Dead Rising stayed at 1% for a while, but then once it got past 5% it not only said it could start playing but also it sped up big time.
107  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Xbone LAUNCH DAY!!!! Which system are you getting? on: November 22, 2013, 08:16:28 PM

Internet is back to 500 kb/s.    Ugh I hate the internet out here in the boonies.

Anyway, everything works and so far works well.   I was able to issue voice commands without any problems.   I couldn't find 'Settings' by using the controller, so I finally gave up and said 'Xbox, Go to settings' and boom.... instantly to settings.

Hetz... have you figure out how to turn the TV back off after starting it?    I went home but the TV was still playing in the little window (with the TV sound coming through).

Fit and finish:

1.  The Day One boxing was great.   black, sexy, with a lot of girth
2.  The console itself is smaller than I had built it up to be in my mind.   I love the modern, simple, elegant looks.
3.  I love love love the controller.   It is the old familiar and mostly perfect 360 style controller.    No surprises.
4.  It's patching fast.   In the time it took me to type this, the update went from 0 to 20%

In November of 2005 I was 31 years old working in Savannah Georgia (for the same company, just different location).  My mom was alive and we had no idea she was going to be diagnosed with cancer and later lose her battle with it (I miss you mom).  My daughter was 2.5 years old, and my son was less than a year.  I was heavily into World of Warcraft and raiding.   The University of Alabama was still mucking around the probation + Shula years, and it would be two more years before the start of an era of renewed football dynasty.

That year, at the request of his wife, I camped out with a coworker in 33 degree weather overnight at a Best Buy to get a 360.   We made it from 10pm to 8am and were 2 people short in line to get the system.   It was devastating.   I later purchased one of Walmart.com's completely unethical and insane (and useless) bundles to get it in time for Christmas.   When it arrived I promptly piled all of the extra garbage it came with into my car and returned it all to Walmart for a refund (everything besides the system).

If Anonymous is going to go political and fancy themselves as champions of the commoner the way they have the past 2 years, they need to figure out how to navigate public relations.

How do you win over supporters to your cause?   NOT by taking down a service that a bunch of commoners want to use on the night they want to use it.
