WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is it supposed to be?  I haven't been keeping up on it....
2922  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Ok so when is the danged launch list going to be released??? on: October 25, 2005, 12:58:31 PM
I've been very very very patient.   I've been keeping my mouth shut.    We are now inside a month and I've seen no official launch list from M$, and it's ticking me off.

I just watched the newly released Gears of War trailer last night, and was disappointed to see '2006' on the end of it.     Great.   Another title they have been pimping slips to next year.     Is there going to be any GAMES out for this damned box for me to actually PLAY on Christmas day?

Or am I going to have to thank my wife and then stick the damn thing on the shelf for six months?   Right about now I'd like to slap that bald m'fer on his head.    :x

Has Microsoft officially ruled out use of mouse/keyboard for games?   The controller inputs are USB.......

I guess this is kinda off-topic, but what do you all do when daylight savings comes around? It's coming up in another week and a half, and my kid, who usually goes to bed at 8:00 pm to 8:30 pm pre-daylight savings, will now be getting ready for bed at 7:00 pm to 7:30 pm once DST kicks in.

I just let them adjust themselves.   They have already slid back a bit because it's getting darker later....    so I just let them adjust their bedtime a little during the changes.   I usually try to go halfway in between for a few weeks.
2925  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox 360 vs Playstation 3 on: October 20, 2005, 03:58:38 AM
360 for me

When both the PS2 and Xbox came out -- I was amazed by the Xbox's graphics and severely disappointed by the PS2's jagged craptasticness.

Sony also has a damn history of artifially inflating their pre-launch specs and such.... always pissing me off when the end product hits the shelves.    I'm not a M$ fanboi, but I'm sick of Sony.

So there's my take!
2926  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / [parenting] MY SON WILL NOT GO TO SLEEP on: October 19, 2005, 08:39:51 PM
I have a 2 and a half year old and a new 4 month old.

Here's how we did the 2.5 year old when she was coming up:
I would put her in the crib and she would start crying when I left.    She would cry for 45 minutes before going to sleep.   I'd go in every 5 minutes to put her pacifier back in and make sure she knew I was not abandoning her.    It was agony to hear her scream...but I HAD to do it.    After 2 weeks the cry time went from 45 minutes to 2 minutes and then zero.

With Ethan, here is my plan (they are in bedrooms right NEXT to each other, so I too fear him waking her up):

I'm putting her bed on far side of her room away from his room.  I'm putting him on far side of his room away from her room.    I've got a white noise maker in both their rooms place directly between their beds and the wall that separates their rooms.

When I start the training I'm planning on his screaming for 45 minutes at first, and the possibility that it will wake her up.    If it wakes her up I'll go into her room and tell her it's night night time and that daddy is trying to get her brother to go to sleep.

It might be a rough first week but I think he'll break as fast as she did.

I recommend the same strategy.   Go in every 5 minutes to 10 minutes of his screaming and tell him 'NO!  It's night night time.'  put pacifier back in and leave.    He will go from 45 minutes to 30 minutes to 10 minutes to 5, 2, zero.     When he gets to zero I BET it helps with your midnight problems too..... when he wakes up he won't be as upset.    I've always used the same tactic when my daughter wakes up at night btw -- she NEVER gets let out of her room at night.   We go to her, fix what is wrong, and leave as quickly as possible.     She sleeps like an angel at night now....  every now and then she calls out for us if she is thirsty or sometimes in her sleep when she's dreaming......  but that's it.

Edit to add some personal details:
My wife works 3-11pm so it's me SOLO at night.   I did this all by myself.
Also:  I set a CONCRETE bedtime that we strictly follow to make this work.  Kids like order and structure -- they crave it.   She KNOWS her bedtime is promptly at 7:30pm.    She gets up at 6:30 to 7 am every day.   No problems at all.  smile
2927  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 360 Launch List to be announced tomorrow? on: October 19, 2005, 03:07:25 PM
Actually now I think these symbols are going to start appearing everywhere --  apparently at 4 major football games on Saturday as an example --  and maybe you are supposed to take a picture of the symbol if you see it and write a report of what you saw and send them in.

Give me a freakin break.    Could they make it any more of a pain in the ass?

2931  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox 360 - Some hands on on: October 13, 2005, 06:56:25 PM
So would I be pipe-dreaming to hope that this 'marketplace' for the 360 might offer a way to purchase and download movies (like REAL movies -- Lord of the Rings, The Ring, Gone with the Wind, etc) to then transfer and store on your Media Center PC?
2932  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What was the first Console game you ever played? on: October 11, 2005, 06:35:13 PM
Adventure on the Atari 2600

Followed by Raiders of the Lost Ark.

I also recall some game that was released as a part of a contest of some kind....   I think they released 3 carts or something that had stuff you had to do in order to win the contest.    I can't remember what that was though...

Then we got the beloved Intellivision and Sea Battle was where it was at!

Enjoy.

No PS3 for you!

They announced at X05 that Oblivion is an XBOX 360 exclusive.
Man, this must have been like a formative conflict for Hetz.

Think of all the horrific tension that went into this post, folks -- Hetz had to decide which of his masters got more pander:  should it be fair Bethesda, maker of worlds so real they're just as boring as real life, or should it be strong Microsoft, bane of innovation, baron of Bigger-is-Better?

Frankly, I'm surprised at the result!

Whoa!   This isn't going to be good when Hetz sees this zinger.

2935  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [360] Top 5 Launch Day Games according to EGM on: September 30, 2005, 01:26:55 PM
You know that the 360 comes with those USB ports that they say are compatible for keyboards.    I'm crossing my fingers that Oblivion ships with mouse/keyboard support for Xbox 360.

Probably a pipe dream though.
2936  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Got to try a 360 this week... on: September 29, 2005, 07:38:23 PM
Alright dangit...

We're under 2 months to release....  where is the deluge of screenshots, previews, and news releases from MS?   In fact... where is the WOW shots, hints, revelations, etc?

I want to be in agony over waiting on my 360.   I also am feverishly trying to convince a friend to get one instead of waiting for a PS3.    These things would certainly help that cause!

Welp...  My wife is going to get the 360 for me for Christmas.   After seeing the $400 price tag, I figured all hope had been lost.....  but I sold some stuff on Ebay and gave her $200 towards it, so it will be tucked under my tree this season.    The downside is that I'll have to wait until December 25th for it....  but the upside I suppose is you guys will be able to report to me which games are worth buying (or asking for for Christmas).

Yes.... she preordered the Top O the Line one.... which I'm thankful for!

Now I'm very excited about this holiday season already!   WOOT!

Awesome!  biggrin

I'll be getting a bunch of launch games and will of course have full impressions of each one.

Ahhh!  I remember way back during the build up to the first Xbox launch.    You and I were Xbox staunch defenders together Hetz.   Before the elections.... before the politics....

Remember that?   Here we are again at long last.    Back in the day my wife and I were newly married and lived in a small house an hour south of where I live now.      I remember her watching in awe as I cranked up Halo for the first time....  she enjoyed just watching me play it.

Those were simpler times, and I can't believe it's been as long as it has.
Here's to an upcoming VERY merry christmas!  smile

There is a password on it.   It's probably a wiz for a kid to figure out though through repeated button mashing.    Hopefully the person will just clear out my info and start their own.

You think I should email them and ask them to clear out the info because I forgot?
2941  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / CRAP! Xbox Live question please.... on: September 09, 2005, 05:49:01 PM
Ok... So I sold my Xbox to help pay for a 360 this Christmas.    But I'm panicing now because I have Live subscription and didn't think to change anything on the box before I sold it.

What should I do?  Nothing?   I mean the person I sold it to would need the password to get on and play, right?    So I should be able to get my Xbox 360 at Xmas and enter my tag and enter password and get up and going, right?

I think it is a firestorm...and it's still raging on the MS boards.

I've gone from must-purchase 360, to wait and see what cards Sony lays down before November.
2943  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / CG editorial has made me have serious Xbox 360 2nd thoughts. on: August 21, 2005, 02:48:57 PM
My biggest beef is the hard drive.

It should be standard in all packages so that developers would all use it completely for making games the best they can be.    If that means the low end would be 350 or something... so be it.

I think Microsoft had a genuine opportunity to really start eating into Sony's market share here.... and just even the PERCEIVED controversy about this is going to hurt the chances.

You know as well as I do how fickle internet geeks are.... you know how an internet firestorm of false information can hurt a product or a person.   This firestorm is nobody's fault but Microsoft.  It's self created -- had they only had a more expensive starting price but all 360's equipped with a Hard drive this never would have happened.

I can't believe MS is making mistakes I think are ironically very reminisent of a company they beat years ago for making the same mistakes --    Apple.
2944  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Hold the Phones guys, Xbox 360 Hard Drive not included? on: August 18, 2005, 12:56:22 PM
So what you guys are telling me is that instead of allowing developers to use the HDD for ways to make games a LOT better -- creativity, etc, all that.....   They are making game developers ignore the HD except for basic, rudimentary, trival tasks...... right?

So for the sake of a cutesy MARKETING ploy, they are hamstringing developers and games....

Microsoft -- the capitalist in me was sympathetic to your plight a few years back, but s*** like this makes me wish you'd been BURIED by the government.

Game companies are sick of losing money on their consoles. I can't understand how any one can knock Microsoft for the $399 price. They aren't short changing anyone, they are just trying to give people more options by offering the $299 version.

If Sony releases the PS3 for less than $400 I will be shocked. Not only that, but just think about how much money they can potentially lose if they price the PS3 at $400. There is the system, the built in wireless adapter, the Hi-Def dvd, and I have heard that they are also considering an optional hard drive. I wouldn't be mad at Sony if the PS3 started at $600 dollars with all the crap they are putting in it.

Then there is Nintendo, and I wouldn't be suprised at all if the Revolution was only (ha only) $200. Yet they have catches too, charging to download all the games for one, and the other is that for that price, their machine just won't be able to do what the other two can. I know that it is all about the "game play", but if they don't improve the tech, they can't improve the gameplay.

People might not understand or like what Microsoft has done, but they have just opened gamers eyes to the $400 console price tag. It's kind of funny, because they totally took the burden off of Sony.

You are smoking something, right?   Weed?  Crack?   Something like that?

I thought so.    I could BUILD a damned fully functional powerful computer for $600... but you'd be willing to purchase a console with tons of restrictions and proprietary CRAP for $600?

No thanks.   You and about 10 other guys will have to enjoy that console yourselves.

2948  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Best PSP Launch Game? on: March 30, 2005, 09:14:57 PM
My honeymoon is still going strong even after a couple system exchanges (one due to my own pickyness, and the other due to a black piece of dust under the center of the screen).

Wipeout is pure gaming bliss on the run.   I can wip out a race in no time flat, and I LOVE the way the PSP just saves where you are when you power off.  I see the downloading potential here too!

I'm going to skip Tiger Woods in favor of Hot Shots when it comes in May.   I'm renting Lumines to find out what the hype is about, and also plan to rent Untold Legends.

The hardware seems very robust and sexy.   I don't mind at all playing it in public areas because it just looks so sophisticated.    My coworkers even turned their heads at Spider Man 2.

So for I have not an ounce of buyer's remorse, and I'm going to sell my DS to pay for more PSP 'stuff' purchases.   Even if it means putting the money aside for future purchases.
2949  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Does anyone here even have a DS? I have some ?? PSP too! on: March 28, 2005, 09:26:58 PM
I have both systems.

To be honest.... I've owned a Nintendo Gameboy Advance, DS, and now PSP.   I hardly ever played the Advance.... I once again hardly ever played the DS...

But I've been NON STOP playing this PSP, and I can't stop.   My purchase excitement usually ends the moment I buy it and then it evaporates.   Not this time.   I've got an Xbox and a Cube that are sitting idle while I play away the hours on this PSP.

I don't think I've ever played a console/handheld/videogame as much since the olden days of the Atari 2600.    It's just so darned COOL...  it restored the same 'it's darned COOL" feelings I used to have when the Atari first came out.

I'm planning to sell my DS now on Ebay.  I'll keep my cube to cover myself in case any new stuff comes out for it -- but my instincts tell me that it's also getting to the end of it's lifecycle for good games.

The DS money will be used to buy a couple more PSP titles in the weeks to come.   Thank you Sony for a system that is truely a marvel to play, watch, listen to , display, and hold.

So about my problem:

Should I become that weasily guy that keeps exchanging his system over things he's finding, or should I just suck it up and keep the one with the debris under the glass?

I've played a bunch on it today hoping I'd get used to it, but I can't take my eye off that debris since it's slap dab in the middle of the screen.  frown
2951  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PSP warranties and such on: March 27, 2005, 07:23:05 PM
Well I took it down and they swapped out the whole thing for a new one.   (that's the whole system/box/etc).

During the exchange, I also purchased the warranty.

Problem:   Now I have a system that has a piece of debris or black speck of something underneath the glass.   It is directly front and center of the screen so that it is very noticable while using the device.

Should I lug the thing BACK down to the Eb and swap it out for yet another machine (thereby becoming the 'problem' customer for that store)?
2952  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PSP warranties and such on: March 26, 2005, 07:49:02 PM

2953  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PSP warranties and such on: March 26, 2005, 06:36:06 PM
So when I bought from EB games, they offered me a 25 dollar 1 year warranty.   I know that the system has a manufacturer waranty for 1 year, but what is the difference between these?   I elected not to get it at the register, but the guy says I have 14 days to get it after purchase.

On a related note -- my PSP headphones do not work.    The ones that came in the value pack.   Should I call Sony, get the EB warranty and then immediately file a claim on it, or what?

frown   I'm sad that my remote control/headphones won't work cause I want to watch spiderman 2 with them next weekend on a road trip.

What does this really mean for us?    Is there a chance I'll get my preorder on launch day now?

Probably depends on how many copies your store orders.  Maybe Sony allowed them more copies and you are now on the initial shipment.  Best thing to do is check with your store and see if you've been bumped up or not.

Yeah, its still going to be store dependent.  The additional units could mean that stores that don't heavily traffic in pre-orders like Best Buy, Circuit City, etc may have more available for walk-ins but the smaller chain stores may still be limited what they get in their first shipment.  The store is unlikely to guarantee which "shipment" you'll be in until they can confirm their shipping numbers.

When do they get their shipping numbers?
And if I were to find one at a 'walk-in' store on the day of launch, could I cancel my preorder with Ebgames without penalty?
2960  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Ok...so what does the 1 million units at launch day mean? on: March 03, 2005, 08:27:51 PM
The local store is being VERY tight lipped.   I'll drop by next week and ask them though just to see.

In any case -- Sony is insisting that they will ship 3 million by end of march.   So at the very least I'll have it within a week or so.

I hope I'm on the first shipment though.   I *need* that Spiderman 2 movie.
