2921  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / CRAP! Xbox Live question please.... on: September 09, 2005, 05:49:01 PM
Ok... So I sold my Xbox to help pay for a 360 this Christmas.    But I'm panicing now because I have Live subscription and didn't think to change anything on the box before I sold it.

What should I do?  Nothing?   I mean the person I sold it to would need the password to get on and play, right?    So I should be able to get my Xbox 360 at Xmas and enter my tag and enter password and get up and going, right?

I don't think this qualifies as a firestorm and it's already dying down, long before the system appears on shelves.

I think it is a firestorm...and it's still raging on the MS boards.

I've gone from must-purchase 360, to wait and see what cards Sony lays down before November.
2923  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / CG editorial has made me have serious Xbox 360 2nd thoughts. on: August 21, 2005, 02:48:57 PM
My biggest beef is the hard drive.

It should be standard in all packages so that developers would all use it completely for making games the best they can be.    If that means the low end would be 350 or something... so be it.

I think Microsoft had a genuine opportunity to really start eating into Sony's market share here.... and just even the PERCEIVED controversy about this is going to hurt the chances.

You know as well as I do how fickle internet geeks are.... you know how an internet firestorm of false information can hurt a product or a person.   This firestorm is nobody's fault but Microsoft.  It's self created -- had they only had a more expensive starting price but all 360's equipped with a Hard drive this never would have happened.

I can't believe MS is making mistakes I think are ironically very reminisent of a company they beat years ago for making the same mistakes --    Apple.
2924  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Hold the Phones guys, Xbox 360 Hard Drive not included? on: August 18, 2005, 12:56:22 PM
So what you guys are telling me is that instead of allowing developers to use the HDD for ways to make games a LOT better -- creativity, etc, all that.....   They are making game developers ignore the HD except for basic, rudimentary, trival tasks...... right?

So for the sake of a cutesy MARKETING ploy, they are hamstringing developers and games....

Microsoft -- the capitalist in me was sympathetic to your plight a few years back, but s*** like this makes me wish you'd been BURIED by the government.

Game companies are sick of losing money on their consoles. I can't understand how any one can knock Microsoft for the $399 price. They aren't short changing anyone, they are just trying to give people more options by offering the $299 version.

If Sony releases the PS3 for less than $400 I will be shocked. Not only that, but just think about how much money they can potentially lose if they price the PS3 at $400. There is the system, the built in wireless adapter, the Hi-Def dvd, and I have heard that they are also considering an optional hard drive. I wouldn't be mad at Sony if the PS3 started at $600 dollars with all the crap they are putting in it.

Then there is Nintendo, and I wouldn't be suprised at all if the Revolution was only (ha only) $200. Yet they have catches too, charging to download all the games for one, and the other is that for that price, their machine just won't be able to do what the other two can. I know that it is all about the "game play", but if they don't improve the tech, they can't improve the gameplay.

People might not understand or like what Microsoft has done, but they have just opened gamers eyes to the $400 console price tag. It's kind of funny, because they totally took the burden off of Sony.

You are smoking something, right?   Weed?  Crack?   Something like that?

I thought so.    I could BUILD a damned fully functional powerful computer for $600... but you'd be willing to purchase a console with tons of restrictions and proprietary CRAP for $600?

No thanks.   You and about 10 other guys will have to enjoy that console yourselves.

2928  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Best PSP Launch Game? on: March 30, 2005, 09:14:57 PM
My honeymoon is still going strong even after a couple system exchanges (one due to my own pickyness, and the other due to a black piece of dust under the center of the screen).

Wipeout is pure gaming bliss on the run.   I can wip out a race in no time flat, and I LOVE the way the PSP just saves where you are when you power off.  I see the downloading potential here too!

I'm going to skip Tiger Woods in favor of Hot Shots when it comes in May.   I'm renting Lumines to find out what the hype is about, and also plan to rent Untold Legends.

The hardware seems very robust and sexy.   I don't mind at all playing it in public areas because it just looks so sophisticated.    My coworkers even turned their heads at Spider Man 2.

So for I have not an ounce of buyer's remorse, and I'm going to sell my DS to pay for more PSP 'stuff' purchases.   Even if it means putting the money aside for future purchases.
2929  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Does anyone here even have a DS? I have some ?? PSP too! on: March 28, 2005, 09:26:58 PM
I have both systems.

To be honest.... I've owned a Nintendo Gameboy Advance, DS, and now PSP.   I hardly ever played the Advance.... I once again hardly ever played the DS...

But I've been NON STOP playing this PSP, and I can't stop.   My purchase excitement usually ends the moment I buy it and then it evaporates.   Not this time.   I've got an Xbox and a Cube that are sitting idle while I play away the hours on this PSP.

I don't think I've ever played a console/handheld/videogame as much since the olden days of the Atari 2600.    It's just so darned COOL...  it restored the same 'it's darned COOL" feelings I used to have when the Atari first came out.

I'm planning to sell my DS now on Ebay.  I'll keep my cube to cover myself in case any new stuff comes out for it -- but my instincts tell me that it's also getting to the end of it's lifecycle for good games.

The DS money will be used to buy a couple more PSP titles in the weeks to come.   Thank you Sony for a system that is truely a marvel to play, watch, listen to , display, and hold.
2930  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PSP warranties and such on: March 28, 2005, 03:46:31 AM
So about my problem:

Should I become that weasily guy that keeps exchanging his system over things he's finding, or should I just suck it up and keep the one with the debris under the glass?

I've played a bunch on it today hoping I'd get used to it, but I can't take my eye off that debris since it's slap dab in the middle of the screen.  frown
2931  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PSP warranties and such on: March 27, 2005, 07:23:05 PM
Well I took it down and they swapped out the whole thing for a new one.   (that's the whole system/box/etc).

During the exchange, I also purchased the warranty.

Problem:   Now I have a system that has a piece of debris or black speck of something underneath the glass.   It is directly front and center of the screen so that it is very noticable while using the device.

Should I lug the thing BACK down to the Eb and swap it out for yet another machine (thereby becoming the 'problem' customer for that store)?
2932  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PSP warranties and such on: March 26, 2005, 07:49:02 PM
Got it at EBgames.   The headphones included were the only thing not to work.   Everything else is fine.
2933  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PSP warranties and such on: March 26, 2005, 06:36:06 PM
So when I bought from EB games, they offered me a 25 dollar 1 year warranty.   I know that the system has a manufacturer waranty for 1 year, but what is the difference between these?   I elected not to get it at the register, but the guy says I have 14 days to get it after purchase.

On a related note -- my PSP headphones do not work.    The ones that came in the value pack.   Should I call Sony, get the EB warranty and then immediately file a claim on it, or what?

frown   I'm sad that my remote control/headphones won't work cause I want to watch spiderman 2 with them next weekend on a road trip.

Darn it -- THIS is the one game that I had preordered for today's launch.   It's getting very mediocre reviews.

Anyone out there have it?   Should I switch to Wipeout Pure or keep this title?   It's 4 hours from when I go pick up my system, and I want to carefully choose my 1 game.....  :p

2937  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What games are everyone getting at launch for the PSP? on: March 19, 2005, 10:37:39 PM
My list:

Untold Legends
Wipeout Pure

We have a lot of people here that want Untold Legends, but I can barely find a single person on some of the dedicated forums that are making a big deal out of UL.

Why the intrest here -- or rather the lack of interest elsewhere?

Probably depends on how many copies your store orders.  Maybe Sony allowed them more copies and you are now on the initial shipment.  Best thing to do is check with your store and see if you've been bumped up or not.

Yeah, its still going to be store dependent.  The additional units could mean that stores that don't heavily traffic in pre-orders like Best Buy, Circuit City, etc may have more available for walk-ins but the smaller chain stores may still be limited what they get in their first shipment.  The store is unlikely to guarantee which "shipment" you'll be in until they can confirm their shipping numbers.

When do they get their shipping numbers?
And if I were to find one at a 'walk-in' store on the day of launch, could I cancel my preorder with Ebgames without penalty?
2940  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / what does the 1 million units at launch day mean? on: March 03, 2005, 08:27:51 PM
The local store is being VERY tight lipped.   I'll drop by next week and ask them though just to see.

In any case -- Sony is insisting that they will ship 3 million by end of march.   So at the very least I'll have it within a week or so.

I hope I'm on the first shipment though.   I *need* that Spiderman 2 movie.

2941  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / what does the 1 million units at launch day mean? on: March 03, 2005, 07:57:56 PM
As I've stated here before -- when I preordered several weeks ago I was on my store's second shipment list.     Now we get the news that Sony will deliver 1 million on launch day -- when they originally planned to have 1 million by the end of March.

What does this really mean for us?    Is there a chance I'll get my preorder on launch day now?

In any case.... what little info I gleemed from there before I left (never to return to middle school age forums) is that those people think that the 1 million units only cover the initial 1st round of preorders.

That's hard for me to believe.   I think they are Playstation fanbois that are just assuming that.     I can't remember any regular systems even selling 1 million units on launch day, much less a 250 dollar portable.

I think the story is accurate -- they were able to produce more than they thought -- so I'm hoping that this means some of us on the 2nd shipment list will get bumped to first shipment.    I also hope they are NOT right -- and that more than just launch day people will get the bundled Spiderman 2 for the first million units.

I can't believe the lack of information on preorder statistics and launch day info, etc there is only 3 weeks from launch.   Sony isn't releasing much info to go on.

That forum you linked to Hetz is full of the biggest jackasses in the universe.   I linked to the Console Gold story this morning for them (about Sony shipping 1 million units -- beating expectations), and I immediately got a reply telling me that was old news and never spam the forums again.

They can kiss my freakin entire big white butt.   I told them I wasn't going there anymore, to delete my userid and everything.

Hanging out here and over at OO has made me forget how completely degenerate the rest of the internet is... and how just about every kid under 18 needs someone to take a belt to them for about a week straight.

Wow, so shaky rumors of a new Nintendo portable cause you to not even think about two real and very popular portables?

Interesting. Personally, I think Nintnedo has lost a lot of the magic they once had. They keep relying on the old standbys (ie. Mario, Zelda) and very little else. The DS launch has been pathetic and the software support for the Cube has been...err...lacking.

The glory days of Nintendo are fading fast....but hey, keep holding onto that dream Tebunker! I still remember how you used to gush about the Cube and how "Nintendo had changed" back at GG before the launch of the Cube.  smile

I agree 100%.
2949  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / ESPN Football - no more?!?!? on: December 15, 2004, 12:46:58 AM
Quote from: "Dimmona"
I think ESPN should go for the 'ultimate customizable football game route'.  Like replace every single reference to the NFL, stadium, players, etc. with made up names, but allow the user a nice built-in utility where they can point to an IP address and download new rosters/stadiums/football league names at the click of a button.

There has to be some easy way to get around the legal issues and still get us our licensed player names :-)   Anybody remember the bad-assness that was Front Page Sports Football?  They did the same thing...

It wouldn't sell.

Think of the unwashed masses of pimply faced gamers out there -- most of them will walk into a store and say:   Look!  This game has the NFL...this game has what?   I don't even know those teams!   I'll buy this Madden one....

It's just not viable business wise for Sega to even TRY to put out a football game this coming year.   NOBODY will buy it without NFL locations/players/etc.
2950  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What's the scoop on this whole importing thing? on: November 23, 2004, 02:59:49 PM
If I wanted to import a Sony PSP, how would that work?   I have a few questions:

1.  Would the imported PSP be able to play US games when they come out?
2.  Where would I import it from?
3.  How fast would I be able to get it?
4.  How much would it cost?
5.  Are there any drawbacks?

I'm making out my Christmas list, and I was tempted to ask my wife to attempt this -- but I've never done anything like it before.

I disagree with both of you.

You disagree with what point? I've only contended that Valve has *no control* over whether smacktard managers of Best Buy release the game before the official street date, and that VU is forcing Valve (with legal threats, I'm sure) to hold fast to the official unlock date.

People are making it sound like Valve is rubbing their hands together, laughing manically saying ... "We did it Gabe! we made 'em think they could play it. BUT THEY CAN'T!!! MUHUHAHAHAHA!!!"

I'm not making it sound like that.

I'm saying that this whole thing has been a fiasco, mismanaged, mis-calculated, mis-labeled, and mis-everything since just prior to the infamous code-theft incident.

What a JOKE of a company, and what a JOKE of a publisher.    Here we find yet ANOTHER instance of a company SO concerned with piracy that they are punishing honest consumers.

Screw em all, and especially the French bed wetting publishers.

So places like BB(possibly with the ok of Viviendi) start to sell the game early . What do gamers here to? Rag on Valve more even though they had nothing to do with it and are stuck with not activation the game until the 16th for contract reasons. I swear this Valve bashing is just getting pathetic people. Is it possible for you complainers to give them a break just once?  SHeesh people...

Completely agree. To me, it's obvious that Valve is not responsible for this problem, and they are handcuffed by VU.

Since Rage mentioned the era of the big publisher, I thought it'd be interesting to note that EA employees are filing a class action lawsuit against EA, for downright heinous workplace practices. I hope they win big. EA is raping their employees.

If interested,  see this thread, and be sure to read the livejournal entry at the top. You might be shocked at how badly EA treats their people.

I disagree with both of you.

This game and the circumstances surrounding it has been an ongoing circus for going on two years.    This last few days are just continuation of the madness.     Are these people really running a business, or are they totally winging it and one day the house of cards will fall?
2953  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I have Half-Life 2 in my hand on: November 13, 2004, 11:57:31 PM
What's worse is that Valve STILL hasn't unlocked it, so all these people buying it from Best Buy -- INCLUDING consumers that don't know anything about this locked software business -- are getting this thing home to find out it doesn't work.

VALVE:   If you know what is good for your business UNLOCK THIS GAME NOW.

There are a LOT of casual consumers that are picking this up in Best Buys all over the nation that are going to be ticked -- and returning copies -- when they find out it doesn't work.    From what I hear they don't even get an indication of why it won't work when they try to run the CD version.
2954  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Half Life 2 released in Savannah Georgia on: November 12, 2004, 02:36:57 PM
If they are smart, they will quietly and secretly have the unlock go out sometime ahead of schedule -- that way anyone already running steam would get it.

That would lighten the load for when word got out and everyone started hitting it.   Then maybe they could have the servers back online by the time the masses get it on Tuesday.
2955  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Half Life 2 released in Savannah Georgia on: November 11, 2004, 08:52:14 PM
I just called back the original EB (that started all this) and pretended to be someone else:

They said release date is next week.

So it must have been a screw up by someone that worked there.   In other words:   they must have gotten their copies in and have to sit on them for 5 days.

This is the sort of thing that always royally ticks me off.   If game stores get the game 5 days before the release...publishers should just let them start selling the damn thing.    They coudl still have an official 'GRAND LAUNCH' or something on some day they pick out.   It's rediculous!

Also: someone over on OO forums are reporting that they've found reports of people getting the game early but can't play it due to the Steam lock.... so you must be right LordEbonstone!

Just wanted to give folks a heads up:

I just got a call from EB (where I have HL2 preordered) and the guy told me they have it in and it's ready for me to come pick up.    I just about jumped out of my seat!!!

Problem is that I've already decided to cancel that preorder because I have that free copy from the promotional video card thing.   So basically they get the darn copy early for once in my life on a major release and I have to wait for Valve to unlock the game on steam for me!!!!!!    :x

Anyway....   I hope this release day breakage expands widely so that Valve will go ahead and unlock the game.
2958  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Another HL2 question.....Sorry on: October 25, 2004, 01:45:05 PM
So I have a question.

Release day usually is the day the game starts shipping to retailers.   Retailers and folks usually get the game the day after the official release day.

Since my STEAM Half Life 2 says I'll have the game available to play on release day -- does that mean I'll get to start playing it the day it starts shipping -- i.e. one day before the stores all start getting it?

I'm a bit concerned about the turnaround time since I'm in Georgia.   The email said 3 to 5 days.... so we'll see.      They shipped them the day after I signed up -- so they went out on Monday.
