Don't get ripped for $50

Hmm, that looks just like the ones they sell at Disneyland.  The price is about the same as well.  I wonder if it's the same one.

Not sure about Disneyland.   Disney World Indy hats aren't anything like the one they sent me.   I mean the hat is nice and stiff like it should be.   It has a leather (or pleather?) inside rim with silky material lining it inside.    Cap it off by the crown of the hat inside having a nice thick clear rubber material as lining.    Hard to describe, but extremely high quailty.

BOY did I hit it pretty big today with my Random Crap coming in the mail.   I'll be posting pictures later when my camera charges, but here is the gist of it:

1 x Woot!  Beer Bucket #1936/2000
1 x Roomba Discovery with all attachments, etc
1 x Bulova Men's watch with price tag still attached of $275!!!
1 x Case of Coffee Pods for those coffee machines that make one cup at a time (I have a Senseo so they will work in it)

All of that for a total of 8 bucks

Actually, I bought mine about 6 years ago during a trip to Disney.

What? It's not like I wear it or anything... It's a conversation piece!

Oh come on?  Like there isn't atleast one of you with a replica lightsaber!

For the record:   The ones for sale on indianajones.com are much much higher quailty than the ones from Disney.

I bought an official Fedora.   In fact it looks like the same one being sold at that link.

I bought mine direct from the official source though:   www.indianajones.com

It was $44.   It was 100% wool.   It's a real hat, has a silky cloth lining inside, and has the Indiana Jones logo on the inside.

I was amazed at the quality of the hat.   I mean if it wasn't an Indy hat, it would still be a fine quailty hat.

Quest rewards, and merchant stuff is the way to go so far.

This saddens me as this sounds precisely how the loot system for LOTRO is.    Crafting and Quest rewards are where the good loot comes from.    For those of you that didn't have the misfortune of seeing the effects of this long-term in LOTRO, let me give you a peek of the future of a game that goes this loot-route:

In about 40 levels...you will look around and notice that everyone looks the same and has the same gear.    Very very boring.     A system that mixes random valuable rares in, you have a huge variety of people wearing a huge variety of things.    THis will not happen in a game that forms their loot system like what LOTRO or seemingly AOC does.

And for the record:   people claimed in the early life of LOTRO that the loot system probably wasn't finished.    Well... it was.   And it continued it's suckage to this very day.

frown   I'll pass.

LotRO kind of has a framework they must stay within. There wasn't a lot of bling in Middle Earth. Even so, there is a ton of variety in loot. I'm not sure why you never saw it. Higher level characters look a lot more distinctive than they do in WoW, where everyone grinds until they all have the same old tier X gear or crafted class set. No differentiation at all. I'm glad for games that are more than just lusting after the uber gear.

Ale

And see this is where I differ.   I want a game where you can lust after uber gear, but you aren't 100% required to go into a raid to get it.    For instance:   you are a average joe fighting high level mobs for months both doing quests and in small groups or something simliar (non raid).    BLING!    You hit the jackpot on a random drop and get an uber item.

I don't understand why there has to be either all uber item raid dependencies, or NO uber items at all.    Why can't there just be uber items that randomly and very rarely drop in the world to make things interesting?   I mean it seems like devs either go all the way toward raiding, or they take out uber loot altogether.    There should be able to be loot that is randomly dropped for anyone very very rarely that is uber.     This isn't a hard concept.

I find it an incredibly simple concept, actually.

It is ESSENTIAL to keep a balance in the game that rewards effort and investment over random chance, or there'd be absolutely no point in the end-game activities for most people.

It'd be like society handing out millions of dollards - at random - to a few people just because it'd be neat for them. How pissed do you think the rest would be?

I totally support a combination of uber loot for uber raiding no-sleepers, and also the ultra rare opportunity that a rare item is out there somewhere in the wild.    And also an increased change of drop with rare or very hard to kill creatures, etc.

World of Warcraft got it fairly well right.    LOTRO did everything wrong.

Call of Duty 4 is actually really easy to invite people to your party - if you check "friends" in the game, and if they don't show up there, they aren't online in Call of Duty 4.

It's one of the easiest games to get a group together for - you don't have to hang around the XMB.

Many games are now allowing you to check friends via the XMB.

I sent you an invite a few weeks ago, but after having that friend request "pending" for a couple of weeks, I canceled the friend invite.  I just assumed you didn't ever go online or never checked your messages :/

Please resend.   I wasn't checking my messages, and since I was more familiar with Live, I assumed there would be a notification when I logged in that I had one.    I didn't know I had one sitting in my inbox.

2292  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PS3 multiplayer interface needs emergency medical help on: May 18, 2008, 01:35:33 PM

So for the first time since I've owned my PS3 (launch unit here), I decided to try multiplayer with some guys in the office that recently got PS3's. Hooking up with them online is like going to the dentist.

I boot up, and go over to the online tab. Here is displays a long neverending list of people that are both online and offline.   You can sort it...but this is the wierdest way to look through who is there.

I can't look to see who is online while I'm in a game. I have to get out to menu to look.   SUCKAGE.

I have to hang around at the PS3 menu to invite people to play. They have to be hanging around too, otherwise they'll likely miss that I'm trying to get them to play. All this translates to 2 solid weeks of trying to get together with just 4 guys in the office to play some COD4, and all of us missing each other and not being able to actually play with each other.

Sony needs to do SOMETHING to improve this. Even had I not been spoiled by the 360's interface all this time -- something that makes it this hard to actually hook up with people that are expecting you to play with them is unacceptable.

Is Sony planning to overhaul this and create an environment where you can actually find your friends online to play?

Quote
How do you determine the drop rate for an item in the game? Are items going to feel ďepicĒ rather than simply being a random drop from a particular loot table? Or will bigger creatures always drop certain items?

Thomas: Itís a combination. We want to reward the exploring players, so if you come across a boss mob that isnít connected to any quest, he will have something interesting for the player. Something specific in some cases or random in others.  It just depends.

So youíre partially going back to the idea of needing to hunt X monster to get Y weapon?

Thomas: Yes. Some bosses, especially group bosses, will have quite specific loot. They will have items and equipment that are connected to their own archetype.

One thing they keep stressing is that loot tables make sense in regards to the mob. IE - you won't have wolves dropping gold and plate armor.

Ok well now this seems more like it.    I need to learn to read the whole thread before investing energy into a long post.     I guess the only way for me to know is to wait a few weeks and ask around here to see what you guys think of the loot system when you start adventuring and finding more stuff.

It's tough to say this early.  In the beta, zones weren't properly itemized.  I've seen uncommon and rare drops but the stat differences weren't huge.  Also boss mobs don't seem to drop great stuff yet.  So far it seems that items won't male a huge difference in this game, not like WoW.  It still seems to me that itemization is not fully implemented as they want, things will probably change.

If that's the case, I'll pass.     I must be one of the only gamers in the world that loved the idea of getting to a hard to reach mob, killing it, and having a chance for a rare drop.

No I think there are far more players that enjoy loot drops than don't. LotRO had the worst loot system in any MMO I've ever played and in the end it was what killed it for me. I don't need shiny treasure every kill but the occasional nice item drop keeps me happy and ultimately playing.

EXACTLY.   100% agree.   I canceled because of the horrible horrible loot system, and rather than the community rising up and forcing them to do somethign about it, you just had a bunch of people making excuses about it.

It's a shame too because the environment was incredible.   It could have been a WoW killer had it had more interesting classes and a real loot system.

Hey guys....   How did this slip up on me without me knowing it was coming????

I have a question about AOC.    How does the loot system work?   Is it modeled in the same vein as WoW, or is it one of those games in which the developers seem to think that an economy based on crafting is even remotely fun?

In other words:   I live for random world drops, ultra rares, legendaries, etc.     Does this game do that, or is it more like LOTRO where you have no incentive at all to venture looking for loot?

So I loved Animal Crossing when it first came out.   Loved the concept and thought it had loads of potential.
I also loved Harvest Moon the first time I played one.     Spent hours doing the unthinkable in a game:   work!

These two titles I firmly categorize as quirky fun little games that have loads of depth and things to do, but that are kinda unique in that you either love it or hate it.

Can anyone think of any other simliar games out there that I might like if I liked them?     I got my hopes up when seeing an ad for River King (made by the folks that make Harvest Moon games) but I read a review and they appear to say that it's pretty shallow -- not at all like Animal Crossing or Harvest Moon in depth.

Anyway... I figured I'd consult the Gamingtrend oracle.

So how is this working out?   Is it like COD4 where there is a regular group playing each night, or is it more like Rainbow 6 where you can sometimes find a few folks and sometimes you can't?

I got on the 360 version for a little bit lat night and saw some peeps playing, but Sky was doing single player and I didn't get a response from a couple others.    I assumed they were all doing single?

I guess I'm trying to see if I should hang on to my rented 360 copy or send it back in.    If it's sporadic, I'll send it back in and get a PSP rental.    If it's regular, I'll hang on to it.

Once in a blue moon, woot.com flashes 'Random Crap' for $1.00 on their site.   It lasts usually for less than 10 secs before it's gone.    This particular Random Crap was during a woot - off, in which they break from their normal mode of selling 1 item per day and instead sell multiple items all day one by one until each is sold out.     The reason you never saw it up is because it stayed up for 5 seconds before it was sold out and then was replaced by the next item.

I too have kidney stones.   Mine are passable though and I have usually an attack every year or so with pain that lasts off and on for a couple weeks culminating in a horrible hour or two while it makes it's way down the tube connecting the Kidney and the bladder.

Anyway.... water helps but not NEARLY as much as Cranberry juice.    Drinking cranberry juice every day raises the acidity in your urine and it dissolves the kidney stones in your kidney over time.

Luckily people are generally pretty decent.

I recently bought a Disney collectable from ebay and the guy took only Money Orders.    I went down and bought an MO for $35 from the post office, and I made the mistake of putting the WHOLE THING into the envelope.    Well the seller contacted me and told me it hadn't arrived.    I went to the PO and they told me they couldn't help me because I put the stub in there too.   So I was out $35 and had to buy ANOTHER $35 MO to pay the guy.

My wife then brought up that since I got a GREAT deal, the seller might have decided that since there was no way to prove where the MO went, he could keep both and have double his money.    I bit the bullet and sent another anyway assuming that he wouldn't do that.

Well I just got contacted yesterday by the seller that my lost MO finally showed up and he was going to drop it back in the mail to me.     Honestly and decency lives even on the internet.

After clocking in on nearly 12 hours of play overall (since I got a late start by being out of town the day of launch).... something occurred to me today.

We can nitpick the hell out of this thing for little things.    Death by a thousand pinpricks.

The bottom line is for me personally -- this is the most compelling, enjoyable game I've played since Ultima VII.   The city is real.  There are garbage trucks on patrol.   I noticed yesterday a postal worker getting mail out of a corner mail deposit box.  There is very little repetition of graphics -- the stores are unique, alive, and sometimes I turn the game on just to drive around for a little while.  The view of the city from the rooftops is breathtaking and feels right.  After things heated up toward the end of the first major storyline, I felt suddenly connected to the characters.  I've grown tired of my first girlfriend and am thinking of branching out and calling that relationship quits.  Frankly I'm tired of the constant questions about my association with crime.  Screw the bitch -- she's poking her nose where it doesn't belong.

I'm finding myself wondering each time I drive by a park if the serial killer is there stalking his prey....  I'm starting to love my wacky cousin for what he is.  It speaks volumes when -- INSIDE a GAME -- I go back to the safehouse to chill and watch some very well done and funny television shows.  I find the main theme music repeating in my head as I walk down the street in real life.

As I said....this is the best gave I've played in well over a decade.  Just like a great movie -- you can FIND faults when you go looking.   I haven't found any that has made this anything other than one of the best games in history.

Had my first REALLY frustrating mission last night.

Spoiler for Hiden:
Chasing a crime boss' daughter's boyfriend on a motorcycle that apparently is constructed out of balsa wood as every time I fire my damn gun from it in order to try and stop him from getting away, I spin around as if I'm caught in a tornado.

finally just laid down the controller and turned off the 360.  i want to enjoy this game so i'm not going to play it when i'm angry, i've decided.

frack, thats the same type of mission that killed San Andreas for me.  Maybe I'll just go play with my tassels now.

Just chase him and eventually you'll get to a park where you can kill him and a few of his buddies on foot.

heh, guess what?  you don't need to ride a bike for that mission.  I chased him down in a car.

This is how I beat it, though accidentally.  I play in first person mode when driving, but it doesn't work well for me on a bike and so I crashed.  I flew a great distance and another car was closer than the bike.  Go in it and finished up the mission.

Spoiler for Hiden:
returning to a spoiler format:  I just took the earlier advice and loaded up on smg ammo.  took him down pretty quickly after that.  i reached another annoyingly difficult mission with the race that brucie makes you partake in for his final mission.  THAT one almost had me tossing my controller through the tv.  however, i eventually beat it by sheer luck...and by knocking the guy ahead of me into a ravine when i had the chance.  however, it did highlight an earlier complaint from someone around here.  it seems like the missions are less freeform than in previous gta games.  for example:  i tried to block off some of the race participants in the aforementioned mission by going around the starting point and place a few cars in their way to slow their start.  however, when the mission actually started, those cars were gone.  in the previous gta games, i think they would have let me get away with something like that.  i particularly remember doing it repeatedly in vice city when faced with a frustratingly hard mission.

There is a mission where a guy runs down a different ramp to jump into a car and I wasn't prepared for it so he got away.    The next time I parked a car near where he makes his getaway and managed to have it waiting when I was in pursuit.   So I don't think it always resets the vehicles.

Today, I got as far as skipping the opening cutscene, and driving the car out of the dock. I made the first right, the car looked like it was going to roll over, and then it froze.

$60 paperweight that I can't even return to the store. What a crock.

Something has occurred on the PSN that is causing this across most of the PS3 users.    Log out of PSN and you should be good to go until they fix it.
