This long forced hiatus might finally break my addiction to the site.

So I loved Animal Crossing when it first came out.   Loved the concept and thought it had loads of potential.
I also loved Harvest Moon the first time I played one.     Spent hours doing the unthinkable in a game:   work!

These two titles I firmly categorize as quirky fun little games that have loads of depth and things to do, but that are kinda unique in that you either love it or hate it.

Can anyone think of any other simliar games out there that I might like if I liked them?     I got my hopes up when seeing an ad for River King (made by the folks that make Harvest Moon games) but I read a review and they appear to say that it's pretty shallow -- not at all like Animal Crossing or Harvest Moon in depth.

Anyway... I figured I'd consult the Gamingtrend oracle.

So how is this working out?   Is it like COD4 where there is a regular group playing each night, or is it more like Rainbow 6 where you can sometimes find a few folks and sometimes you can't?

I got on the 360 version for a little bit lat night and saw some peeps playing, but Sky was doing single player and I didn't get a response from a couple others.    I assumed they were all doing single?

I guess I'm trying to see if I should hang on to my rented 360 copy or send it back in.    If it's sporadic, I'll send it back in and get a PSP rental.    If it's regular, I'll hang on to it.

best game of the year so far!

if true, then it's just one more reason to be looking forward to mgs4 for me smile ...

i'm trying to give it a chance. i'm enjoying the story so far, i like nico & the supporting cast, & i'm impressed with the technical aspects & much of the peripheral stuff... but i'm already tired of the driving - the reason i've stayed away from the franchise - & not really seeing the awesomeness yet...

I haven't driven to missions since the first moment I could take a cab.   Hell I take a cab on the missions I'm allowed to even.    Sure there are some chase scenes and stuff where you have to drive, but I even take cabs on dates so it doesn't make it unbearable when I do have to drive.

Once in a blue moon, woot.com flashes 'Random Crap' for $1.00 on their site.   It lasts usually for less than 10 secs before it's gone.    This particular Random Crap was during a woot - off, in which they break from their normal mode of selling 1 item per day and instead sell multiple items all day one by one until each is sold out.     The reason you never saw it up is because it stayed up for 5 seconds before it was sold out and then was replaced by the next item.

I too have kidney stones.   Mine are passable though and I have usually an attack every year or so with pain that lasts off and on for a couple weeks culminating in a horrible hour or two while it makes it's way down the tube connecting the Kidney and the bladder.

Anyway.... water helps but not NEARLY as much as Cranberry juice.    Drinking cranberry juice every day raises the acidity in your urine and it dissolves the kidney stones in your kidney over time.

Luckily people are generally pretty decent.

I recently bought a Disney collectable from ebay and the guy took only Money Orders.    I went down and bought an MO for $35 from the post office, and I made the mistake of putting the WHOLE THING into the envelope.    Well the seller contacted me and told me it hadn't arrived.    I went to the PO and they told me they couldn't help me because I put the stub in there too.   So I was out $35 and had to buy ANOTHER $35 MO to pay the guy.

My wife then brought up that since I got a GREAT deal, the seller might have decided that since there was no way to prove where the MO went, he could keep both and have double his money.    I bit the bullet and sent another anyway assuming that he wouldn't do that.

Well I just got contacted yesterday by the seller that my lost MO finally showed up and he was going to drop it back in the mail to me.     Honestly and decency lives even on the internet.

After clocking in on nearly 12 hours of play overall (since I got a late start by being out of town the day of launch).... something occurred to me today.

We can nitpick the hell out of this thing for little things.    Death by a thousand pinpricks.

The bottom line is for me personally -- this is the most compelling, enjoyable game I've played since Ultima VII.   The city is real.  There are garbage trucks on patrol.   I noticed yesterday a postal worker getting mail out of a corner mail deposit box.  There is very little repetition of graphics -- the stores are unique, alive, and sometimes I turn the game on just to drive around for a little while.  The view of the city from the rooftops is breathtaking and feels right.  After things heated up toward the end of the first major storyline, I felt suddenly connected to the characters.  I've grown tired of my first girlfriend and am thinking of branching out and calling that relationship quits.  Frankly I'm tired of the constant questions about my association with crime.  Screw the bitch -- she's poking her nose where it doesn't belong.

I'm finding myself wondering each time I drive by a park if the serial killer is there stalking his prey....  I'm starting to love my wacky cousin for what he is.  It speaks volumes when -- INSIDE a GAME -- I go back to the safehouse to chill and watch some very well done and funny television shows.  I find the main theme music repeating in my head as I walk down the street in real life.

As I said....this is the best gave I've played in well over a decade.  Just like a great movie -- you can FIND faults when you go looking.   I haven't found any that has made this anything other than one of the best games in history.

Had my first REALLY frustrating mission last night.

Spoiler for Hiden:
Chasing a crime boss' daughter's boyfriend on a motorcycle that apparently is constructed out of balsa wood as every time I fire my damn gun from it in order to try and stop him from getting away, I spin around as if I'm caught in a tornado.

finally just laid down the controller and turned off the 360.  i want to enjoy this game so i'm not going to play it when i'm angry, i've decided.

frack, thats the same type of mission that killed San Andreas for me.  Maybe I'll just go play with my tassels now.

Just chase him and eventually you'll get to a park where you can kill him and a few of his buddies on foot.

heh, guess what?  you don't need to ride a bike for that mission.  I chased him down in a car.

This is how I beat it, though accidentally.  I play in first person mode when driving, but it doesn't work well for me on a bike and so I crashed.  I flew a great distance and another car was closer than the bike.  Go in it and finished up the mission.

Spoiler for Hiden:
returning to a spoiler format:  I just took the earlier advice and loaded up on smg ammo.  took him down pretty quickly after that.  i reached another annoyingly difficult mission with the race that brucie makes you partake in for his final mission.  THAT one almost had me tossing my controller through the tv.  however, i eventually beat it by sheer luck...and by knocking the guy ahead of me into a ravine when i had the chance.  however, it did highlight an earlier complaint from someone around here.  it seems like the missions are less freeform than in previous gta games.  for example:  i tried to block off some of the race participants in the aforementioned mission by going around the starting point and place a few cars in their way to slow their start.  however, when the mission actually started, those cars were gone.  in the previous gta games, i think they would have let me get away with something like that.  i particularly remember doing it repeatedly in vice city when faced with a frustratingly hard mission.

There is a mission where a guy runs down a different ramp to jump into a car and I wasn't prepared for it so he got away.    The next time I parked a car near where he makes his getaway and managed to have it waiting when I was in pursuit.   So I don't think it always resets the vehicles.

Why would you want to sell them? I mean, this early in the blu-ray game anyway. Are you going to replace all your DVD's with blu-ray versions at $20 to $25 a pop? I'd love to rebuild my collection that way, but no way I could afford the $4000 price tag (200 x $20 ea)

I'm waiting on some good 'buy 2 get 1 free' deals on bluray at the moment, or at least some good sales. I did have to buy Planet Earth up front though.

Is it legal to use your own DVD movies to somehow copy them down to the PS3 drive so you can access them both on the system and on the PSP?    I'm unsure of the legality of doing this -- instincts tell me that I own the DVD's and thus can do it.... but law rarely follows common sense or instincts, so I'm asking here.

If it IS legal -- what programs do folks here (if anyone is doing this) use to do it?     I know about PSP Video 9 which converts it to PSP format and copies it over.    The big question is what do I use to rip the DVD down to my hard drive, and what do I use to combine the files so that it isn't broken up into several individual files?

So this whole game, of which I can "do anything/go anywhere" only works if I complete missions based on the specific criteria set by the developers thereby limiting my imagination?

Rockstar, you fail.

Aside from the whole "cultivating relationships" thing, stick me in the "same gameplay as GTA3-San Andreas" camp.

That's basically my impression as well.  Now, I haven't actually played San Andreas since it was first released so I'm sure if I were to go back to it now I would find a lot of stuff drastically inferior to GTA4.  But so far GTA4 feels like a small evolutionary step from SA and not a generational leap.  But I'm still definitely in tutorial mode (even after four hours) so I suspect (and hope) that further play will start pointing out some major improvements.

I think this is more than an evolutionary leap.   This is a generational leap.     If they drastically changed things too much, it would cease to be GTA IV and become a different game altogether.      Based on my memory of those games, I remember just kinda wandering around destroying the city and thinking that the string of one timed mission after another was exhausting.    This time around I feel like it's wrapped more tightly in a believable network of relationships.   The city is breathing and living.   The interface through the phone -- hell they don't even have a startup menu to speak of -- is brilliant.

In short -- the game makes me want to at least try to keep from running people down and ignoring all traffic laws.   I drive around like I'm driving around a real city so far.    That speaks a lot for the creation this time of a living Liberty City.

Past games have felt like a city shell with a bunch of missions in it.    This time it feels like a living city that I'm exploring.   I feel poor.   I feel like a nobody.    Hell I had to run from a fist fight a few minutes ago because three of the guy's buddies got up from their table and started beating the crap out of me.    So I sprinted to my car....got the beat down some more as I tried to get into it....backed up and they started running.  I managed to run down one of them badly and clipped another.    A few minutes later an ambulance showed up to treat them.

About to leave for my overnight meeting but I managed another couple hours this morning.    Environment is amazing.   I've played a total of 3 hours or so and I haven't even gotten into any real missions that have much to do with crime, and I haven't been near a firearm yet.     I suck at bowling.  I'm pretty good at darts.

This is definately a great game.   I can't wait to get back tomorrow and put some more time in tomorrow night.    I kinda like the gritty feel of the city and the way they styled the graphics.   I know they are masking the limitations of the current gen systems as far as distance and such... but they do it in a way that makes it seem like they just did it for the style instead of the limitations.

No problems so far on my PS3.    I'm expecting my 360 rented copy (sorry godhugh) to be here tomorrow when I get home.

Got about an hour in tonight.    Unfortunately I have to go BACK out of town tomorrow so I'll be stuck at an hour until Thursday.   So far it seems it's an amazing game and I've JUST scratched the surface.   The city does have a living feel to it... and yes there is haze in the distance but we all don't yet have supercomputers to handle a completely no load open world with no haze or popup.    A decade from now probably....

Anyway.. the story and feel of the city is great.    I'm loving the phone.

OH...and just in case anyone wondered --   I got the PS3 version from Amazon.com, and I just checked gamefly and I was lucky enough to get the 360 version rented.   It should be here by the time I get back in town on Thursday.    I can then do a CLOSE comparison by getting Nikko to stand in the same place or do the same thing and switch back and forth on my TV to do a comparison.   I'll also be able to do multiplayer with those of you on the 360 version.   thumbsup

I haven't seen a review mention this at all.   It would indeed suck because I'd have to beat the game again on the 360 version to play with you guys.     I'm thinking (hoping) that the entire city is available to you for multiplay right out of the gate.     I hope.

Custom firmware is the only way...annnnnnd I don't have a large enough memory card nor the patience to go to the trouble.  I do know that people here do roll that way.

I'm nervous about that .  I have official firmware 3.95, and I'm worried about bricking my PSP in making the switch.   Heck I don't even know HOW to make the switch.   I am worried about my UMD's though as the plastic cases seem to be able to go FUBAR pretty easily.

Naturally those that have PS3's are too busy paying attention to the GTA IV thread to even know I asked another question.   Tongue

This might be a no-no since the same tactics are used for piracy, but I was wondering if there is any way at all to copy UMD's to your memory card without messing with the firmware?

These UMD's are EXTREMELY delecate.    I feel like I have to baby them constantly, and even so I've got one that is loose already.      mad thumbsdown

I know there are some people out there backing up their UMD's to memory sticks, but they all appear to have custom firmware or something.    If this is the only way -- is it risky, hard, or is it worth it?
