You aren't thinking this all the way through. Their likely objective isn't to artificially inflate demand, it is to keep scalpers from buying up every unit they will have available for the holiday period and allowing them to set the market for what the unit costs.

Quote from: morlac on September 15, 2013, 01:23:14 PM

So they could sell them all through preorders and say sorry sold out but are holding some back to keep demand up and keep the hype train running and selling it as "we are looking out for the consumers".  Essentially they  are decreasing launch supply so they can keep trickling them out so consumers will keep hope they might find one instead of buying the competitors device.

It might not be their entire objective but is a nice bonus.  Also, I fail to see how this will dissuade console scalping. The scalpers will know when new shipments arrive and act accordingly.

Uh, yeah. Not gonna happen. They have absolutely no reason to push up the American date, as they are already first there and launching any earlier would just increase risk and reduce stock. They're sitting fine where they are. The only known release date they could benefit from pushing is the European one since it's currently one week later than Xbox One (in the few countries where the latter launches this year, that is).

What risk? Also, not sure if you recall the Wii launch but the shortages were paramount to the gotta have one mentality.  Hell even my wife wanted to buy one when we stumbled upon one on July 4th at Bestbuy. Creating artificial shortages is an old marketing tactic and proven to be successful. The trick is to not let it out too early(that there may be shortages) and play the aww shucks we had no idea it would be this popular card.

Risk: That the interface or early games are buggy in ways that could have been fixed with one or two more weeks of development time. Publishing as late as possible reduces this risk.

As for the shortages, it doesn't work the way you think it works. What you're saying is essentially a conspiracy theory, and as all conspiracy theories goes, it's wrong. Companies like Sony, Microsoft, Apple, etc. sign contracts for a production run with the factories that produce their products. These contracts say that they're supposed to produce a certain amount of units every month for a certain amount of time, usually for a year or two at a time. This keeps production prices low. The amount of units produced typically stays constant throughout this period, and the challenge the companies face then is to pick a number of monthly units that won't leave them with unsold units on shelves. They want to minimize risk. Since consoles start production just a few months before release (3 in this case, it would appear), you only get those monthly allotments of units at launch. Maybe some companies bring in extra factories at launch to increase stock temporarily, but that sounds both expensive and risky to me.

The effect you're talking about is a lucky coincidence, not a strategy. It all comes down to the fine balance between short term supply and long term risk. They'd rather have a slight shortage at launch than millions of units in two years that don't sell.

Edit: You should also consider this: If all units at launch sell out, how the heck are the companies producing them supposed to benefit? It doesn't matter if there's plenty of demand if there's no supply. They don't earn money by having potential customers wanting their products. They earn money by having potential customers buy their products.

http://gamingtrend.com/2013/09/13/can-pre-sell-every-unit-can-manufacture-sony-prepares-ps4-reserve-inventory-launch-day/

I did not reply before because it wasn't worth it but toy manufacturers have been none to create shortages around the holidays to drive hype.  Apple has been accused of it numerous times.

"“It’s everything we can manufacture. We want to make sure that consumers have an opportunity to buy one on November 15, and through the holidays, so we’re holding back some inventory to make sure that people will have an opportunity to buy one.”"
"“We’re going to work very hard to make sure that every consumer that wants one gets one,” said Tretton. It’s not a guarantee, but by setting aside this slice of inventory until the November 15 launch, Sony has created at least a glimmer of hope for those eager gamers hoping to get their hands on a PS4, most likely after camping out overnight in a cold November line."

So how does targeting work?  The GT review didn't touch on it all (yet gave a 95 for controls?) and it is my biggest concern with the console version.  The deeper you get into the game the more important it is to single out certain monsters in a group.  summoners, elites, etc.  Playing in higher difficulties and this becomes critical.  The PC version pissed me off with the auction house BS and terrible loot drops but damn if I don't love a good ARPG so I am not totally opposed to giving them another $50.  I tend not to hold gaming grudges smile

It's a reasonable purchase, however, this assumes their product is good.

Windows phones are just unpopular, for various reasons, doesn't really matter if those reasons are real or not, but that it's a huge hurdle to overcome.

With so much computing, media, and network infrastructure going to mobile devices (including tablets), it's a very good idea for MS to get in heavy and try to extend the same dominance that's dwindling on PCs over to other platforms.

However, they're hitting a problem where that dominance isn't easily transformed into a desirable product in other markets, as we've seen time and time again when MS goes after another market.

Sums up my feelings perfectly.  PC's as we know/knew them are going away and Microsoft can't just sit by and watch.  Having a windows 8 lenovo hybrid ultrabook/tablet for work I will say that their biggest issue now is Apps.  Their store sucks; both selection and pricing compared to other platforms.  Granted the other players had a head start but damn their apps suck.  They are going to have to invest in these greatly somehow or give away these new phones to build up a user base to make app creation more attractive.  At the end of the day if you don't have apps nobody wants the device even if it is cheaper than the competition.

Peggle

Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery
Tiny Wings

Badland is the newest, so it's a little early to call it a classic, but it's very good.  Flight Control has been improved upon by other games since, but still holds up.  The only one on here I wouldn't call a classic is Mini Moto Racing, but I may have to give it a go and see if it just didn't click with me.

One of our main aims with Rust is to not control how people behave directly. For example some people want us to implement something to discourage people killing each other.  Some kind of rating. Or turn killers red to warm you they can’t be trusted.

I hate that. It’s not giving the players freedom. The players should decide how they play the game. You should be fearful of others. That is the whole point. This is a game where the player makes their own story.. and emotion plays into it a lot. If you see another guy in game.. – you’re going to be scared of him at first. But then you sniff around each other and decide to go on an adventure together. You begin to trust each other. That means so much more if you both had the ability to kill the other at any time and didn’t. And you weren’t just doing it for a green +1.

So what’s to stop you from going around killing anyone you want and taking their shit and becoming more powerful? Nothing. What’s stopping it from becoming a PVP killfest? You. Our job should be to give the players the tools they need. If you’re sick of getting killed – start a town. Build town walls. Give all the town members red clothes. Put warning signs up outside the town. Set up trip wires and alarms. Watch each others back.

Hello nitch title!  Good luck with that.  I bolded the part that developers always seem to trip over with these type of games.  I call it the Asshat to Agreeable quotation.  These games attract asshats at a far greater rate than agreeable players.  Well it seems that way but in reality probably not true in a pure numerical sense.  However, 1 Asshat can easily ruin the game experience of 10+ players and I think that is being conservative.  So in the above example how much time must players spend not having fun before they can deal with the asshattery in a reasonable manner?

I've always played my X360 on a 24-inch monitor a couple of feet from my nose at 1080p, which I have liked. I might end up with the Xbone being hooked up to a somewhat further away 26-inch TV limited to 720p. How much am I going to notice/hate it?

With that size TV it probably won't be too noticeable of a difference.

It might at the distance he is sitting.  Why not use the XBONE on the 1080p screen?  The 360 does not render at the higher resolution but the new systems will.  Or go with Wonderpug and get a bigger screen smile

Ha ha. Lost. I see what you did.

Your argument lacks any real info, since, you know, there is none. You're comparing a digital-only distribution model where costs are drastically different on PC, where the digital market has matured and is competing with itself (Steam, GMG, Origin, MS Store, GOG, etc...). To not expect similar as time passes in the console world seems near-sighted.

You must be blinded by your snarkiness.  Here is what he said  "Looking at the current set up of PC, Xbox and PS its only the PC that has agressive pricing from the off, cheap deals on day one, massive reductions after a few months as well as weekly and daily sales across multiple retailers and etailers. A open platform with lots of choice."
Seems pretty straight forward and he's right the PC platform has great sales from both retailers and etailers from a games launch until they practically give it away a year later.  Pc games have been like that even before digital distribution took off.  Now not to the extend of some of these digital sales but I have been hunting and succeeding at finding great deals on PC games for the past 15+ years.  Expecting for console games to suddenly be discounted like PC games because of digital distribution is not a guarantee when their entire history of pricing says otherwise.  He's not being near-sighted at all, I would say the exact opposite and there are years of "info" to back up his thinking.

I haven't enjoyed a mmorpg in quite awhile but something about this one just clicks. Have not even gotten one class to 10 yet but so far it appears they have nailed down the hardest part of a modern MMORPG : catering to both the hardcore and casual fans. I see they have one character class coming soon.  Have they given a launch time for that yet?  Also, do they plan on adding more (I certainly hope so) and how often?  Not sure if they have discussed that yet.  I already bought two extra slots and would gladly buy more if they had more variety ; Ranger class, two weapon fighter, alternate healing class, alternate mage, etc.  While balancing can't be easy there are a ton of ways they can go with that.

Vesides slots and maybe a bag of holding, is there anything else wroth saving this Zen for?  Companions or mounts maybe?  Any reason not to convert it to the AD currency or another one? (just how many 'currencies' are there anyway....biggest gripe with the game)

How quickly would only 150 users posting kill the forums?  (hmm though there are probably not that many more than that that post regularly anyhow) Plus that could also be a big deterrent on attracting new posters.

That's exactly the direction we are going in- Thanks to David we've been going away from the PR monkey bullshit that every site has (though we still have some) and posting more editorials and journalistic pieces (like this one for instance). We know this is what readers want and we plan to do more of it.

He's right.  I have really enjoyed the non fluff articles on the front page as of late.  There have been some interesting well written pieces.  Merrying the forums with this content should be the #1 priority.  Same logins for the comments section on articles would be a good start.  That one baffles me.  Linking those comments with a forum post would help stimulate the forums which are in dire need of fresh content.  And for the love of god can we separate the gaming forum somehow, it's a garbled mess since the merger.  I have very little interest in reading about the vast majority of console stuff but most people do not flag their post one way or the other.  IMO the post have gone down since they were merged.  May not be true but it sure seems that way.

I am currently pirating GOT season 3.  I do own the first two seasons on DVD so I don't feel too bad.  It's a helluva show and I can't wait till it's released before watching.  I would gladly pay $1-$2 per episode If they did it that way to watch it streamed.

As for games, I do occasionally do the try before you buy.  I have an aging rig so performance is a concern and game demos are mostly a thing of the past.  Borderlands 2 was my most recent one and I promptly bought it after trying for a half hour or so.  It's not right because I am helping others with more scrupulous intentions by torrenting but my gaming budget these days is mostly spent on keeping my daughter in Dance classes, soccer, day care, clothed, and full of ice cream.  It's been 25 + years since I pirated with sole intent of playing a game and never paying for it.  C-64 days.  I'm not sure how I feel about the monetary effect it has on gaming.  On one hand it has to lead to at least some lost revenue but how much and what amount that is offset by the cost of DRM/anti pirating initiatives just does not seem trackable.  Plus in some ways it is a form of marketing. Look at HBO, they are almost bragging about how much GOt is pirated.

The more time I have to think about the season finale, the lamer it seems.  finger <=to AMC

It felt cheap and lazy.

Hate to say it but I'm in agreement.  Watched it again and it did not age well...hehe.  If next season is not the Carl and Daryl show I'm gonna be pissed.

Good write up.  I am very intrigued.  I don't have the gaming to really justify MMORPGs anymore but this seems like it could be geared to my more casual playtime nowadays.

This felt just like backyard monsters on facebook to me.  Not really my cup of tea

Uhhhh seriously are we talking about the same game(s)?  Backyard monsters looks like a sim-city 2.5D builder game.  H&C is a 3D 3rd person action-RPG plus tower defense.  Whatever you're smoking, can I have some too lol?

Yea, I don't get that one either.  It's a more intimate Dungeon Defenders without the loot pinatas but with more rpgishness.  The last free 'patch' more than doubled the content.  There is a whole lotta game for little money here.  I played for a good 2 hours last night before my phone died.

If you could stream from consoles I might be interested.

If you can do that while someone else plays on the pc for coop action they will make a crap ton of money.

Galaxy on Fire 2 HD and Great Big War Game are free at the moment.

GOF2 is $6.99 normally so free is quite the deal.

I would be willing to bet the NFL had a chat with the refs to remind them that the game is not about them....nudge nudge wink wink.  There was a lot of contact from both players but I think another contributing factor was that the pass was not really catchable.  It looked a bit high to catch and bring feet down in the endzone.  Probably close enough to call holding in a regular game.

Lame pass interference no call in the endzone and lame holding no call on the safety.  But niners put themselves in this situation in the first half and letting Jones score on the kickoff

Actually it was Defensive holding on the last play because the infraction occurred before the ball was thrown iirc.  The (offensive)pass interference no call was when the receiver threw the defender down.  So they were both guilty but the first one should have negated the second.   Zero chance they make that call in that situation though unless it's just blatant.  I thought the bigger no calls were all the punches being thrown during the numerous mix ups.  Regular season game and at least 2 players would have been tossed.

Yep, that is how to works.  If you have a script blocker running you will not see it.  I have mine running on here now but no help for surfing with my iphone so I guess Ill just stop doing that.  I'm sure there is a way to disable it for mobiles but I just can't be bothered to be honest.

My biggest gripe is the hyperlinking (viglink or whatever)on key words on the forums.  I miss click those obnoxious things all the time and find them incredibly annoying, especially while surfing on my phone.  Why would you want to direct your readers to a different site?  I guess monetary reasons but hot damn I hate those things.

Are you sure that's not something on your end?  'Cause I have no idea what you're referring to.

Certainly possible, but this is the only site I visit that has it.  I suppose I need to add crappy performance/security issues to my list of reasons
I don't visit as often.

edit: just flagged GT as untrusted via No script and it went away.  So yea, don't visit as much  LOL.

Edit2:  Nope definitely not on my end.  As Suspected it is a revenue stream for GT.  http://support.viglink.com/forums/20361846-general-questions
