2641  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WOW still problems?? on: January 17, 2005, 11:18:43 PM
Quote from: "Torfish"
Servers are very loaded right now.  Today most schools are off, it is Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Yep just remebred that which explains the que today(sorta never been one before) but not the daily crashes since the 16 hour maintance frown.
2642  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WOW still problems?? on: January 17, 2005, 08:28:50 PM
So after a 16 hours down last thursday, login issues Friday, a couple resarts and some extended downtime last night my server is still having issues(Kel ' Thurzad or something).  Got home early today and encountered my first Login "que".  Its 3 p.m. and I have to wait in a 97 person line to log into the game.  That's unacceptable.  This the worst (technically) MMORPG I've experinced ever.   Blizzard better be damn glad they at least figured out the gameplay aspect because everything on the other end is crap.  From log in Ques to CTD to lag loot to trying to dload patches.  Its all crap and still broken months after launch.  Don't get me wrong the game is a blast when it works.  I'm just feed up with paying a monthly fee for something that I can't play when I want or without frustration.  I "tried" to play Friday night, Saturday, Sunday and Today.  Only luck i had was saturday afternoon for a couple hours before they had to bring the server down "real quick".  Is anyone else reaching the end of they're patience/tolerance level?

however, the fact that MS hosts the majority of the servers *does* make its games a little bit more cheat proof than, say, the PS2 (SOCOM anyone?).

The fact that *thousands* of people were banned disproves that statement.

Cheating must be pretty easy.

The death penalty isn't severe enough for cheaters.

Actully They banned people for excessive cussing, using racial slurs, and genarlly being abusive(ie being asshats) plus all the cheaters.

Anyway, all of you Alliance players, ready for a challenge and to stop playing easy mode?  Ready to get rid of the horrid lag and overcrowding of your horrid areas?  Join the Horde!  Have even more fun, join a PvP server, like Burning Legion.

My guild, which is over 10 years old (<--a long time), is an all-dwarven roleplaying guild. So, there can be only one faction to choose.

And secondly, why play on a PvP server when all the "fun" PvP-wise is going to be had in the battlegrounds?

Who knows how long before Blizzard actully implements the BG's for one.  The best tme i've had in game was when Redfive and I were trying to do quest in Ashenville a few nights ago.  We were constantlly dodging/spying/attacking allaince members.  Did it make questing harder?  Hell yea it was nearlly impossible.  Did we stay there for 2 hours anyway?  Hell yea we were having alot of fun.  Getting ganked in the middle of a fight by somone twice your lvl isnt much fun.  However,  Being a rogue with all my escapability and teaching said ??Allinace player the enormous aggro ranges of the guards in Tarren Mills however was a lot of fun smile...final score ?? dwarf moron 1 , Festering lvl 25 undead rogue 3.  In other words: Unexpected PVP seemsmore fun then, "hey turn on your flag so we can rumble" kind of PVP.

I hate, hate, HATE the Undercity.  All of the capitals are a bit confusing when you first get there, but this city is just poorly designed, with mazes just to get to the actual entrance to the city.  I haven't seen a less newb friendly area than this crap-hole.

Giggle...hit the 'M' button on your keyboard  Tongue .

Seriously,  At first it was confusing, but now its easy.  Tip : take the "back" exit outta there in the sewers, its where the bats fly in.  I found Orgimaar(sp) and Thunder Bluff to be the most annoying to get around.
2646  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW no fee Teusdays on: January 11, 2005, 08:43:37 PM
16 Hours down is an absurdlly long time for a 'scheduled' maintance fix.  Longest I've ever heard of.  I believe DAOC was down around 10 hours once when they migrated everyone to new servers but that was 2 years after the game launched.  Of course without them sharing a littel info on what changes they are making we are stuck guessing why the hell its gonna take so long.  I'm thinking another comped day is in the future smile.
2647  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / SOE to players: Want more content? Cough it up... on: January 07, 2005, 09:14:25 PM
more info from EQ2 website...

"Think of them like modules for P&P adventure games. They're a smaller scale, self-containted storyline that adds onto the world with a more focused scope than a full-fledged expansion. They'll have a very reasonable price tag.

Keep in mind you'll get the first part for free, so everyone can enjoy a new zone whether you buy the rest or not.

The Adventure Packs aren't the only way we'll be adding content. Our Live Team is working on in-game events and storylines that will be surfacing in the coming weeks. Just as we added two new zones with this week's update, more free adventure areas will be coming in subsequent updates.

Beyond that, there will be full expansions that add significant new lands and features to the game."

I dunno sounds good to me, but then I dont really think SOE is the devil like most if you.

You can fix the loot kneeling by looting a good one and it fixes ya.

That is if you can find one near and your not too wounded from the previous fight(if you got bugged looting a dead mob).  Other problem with this is that it leaves you in the combat mode as far as your healing is concerned...in other words you heal reeeaaal slow.

I guess I approach it from more of a roleplaying standpoint. My character does not want to die. So I roleplay him to that effect. When I die, it makes sad, angry, frustrated, or even at times proud (as in fighting bravely against hopeless odds).

Thats all the penalty I need. I do not need some arbitrary "punishment" forced on me through game mechanics.

I agree.  I try not to die because I don't want my character to die.  A small WoW like penalty versus the old EQ mega pimp is still preferable to me.  Sometimes I would quit early in EQ because I would not have time for a corpse run if I died.  I would not play the day before a long vacation because if I died someplace tough there might be an issue.

I remember in DAOC once you were 50 and had some extra cash there were people who would suicide as a free teleport home.  I could not get myself to do it.  It felt wrong.  I am glad there is some disincentive in WoW so you don't see suicide teleports.

Bah Lvl 50's?  I was 'poor man's porting' from lvl 1 up.  Espically right after you dinged(no exp hit).  I nose dived off the ramparts in uppland numerous times smile.  Buried in a dungeon?  Cant find a 'rabbit hole' ?  I bet those Vendo over there will help ya get out  biggrin

As fun as  the game is when it works, the technical issues are dragging down my level of enjoyment.  I'm still getting occasional loot lag, getting bugged on resources that cause me to get stuck in the harvesting postion, with my only recourse is to alt/tab and exit game from windows.  The last 2 weeks(since last patch?) I've been getting a ton of CTD.  Most of these occur when im messing with my inventory, espically opening all bags at once.  Just about everytime i go to town to sell im gonna get a game crash...very annoying.  I've also gotten 3 game freezes in the last 2 weeks, they seem totally random however.   The best part is everytime this happens(the CTD) you get this wonderfull bug report system...only it doesn't work...for me at least.  It times out or gets an error everytime..shrug.  Anyone else experincing any of this?  Espically since the last patch?
2651  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW: Professions on: December 30, 2004, 09:12:38 PM
My rogue does Alchemy and its a big difference maker.  By lvl 10 I was adding 3 str , 50ish armour points, 30ish extra hit points, faster healing over time, and healing potions during a fight.  Just the defense potions alone were giving me a %15onus to my overall AC.  Agility potions are only about 10 skill poonts away as well.  Alchemy, imo is even better for melee types then casters.  Combined with some leater armour kits and some sharpening stones that I can easily trade potions for and Im my own Buff Bot smile.  It almost unbalances the game using all the profession goodies, at least at -20 lvls.

Well we are a bit more "mature" then the average WOW player so we are less swayed by the "boobies" factor of the Alliance races.

The Spanish Prisoner was a great flick, but it wasn't a comedy. I'm just looking at his IMDB list, and I'd say his last good flick was Bowfinger in '99, and even that wasn't "classic" Steve Martin.

If anyone's interested, there was another serious drama that he was very good in, and that was Grand Canyon, with Kevin Kline and Danny Glover. I thought that was a great movie.

Parenthood is one of my all time favorites as well.  Not a pure drama but a mix of comedy/drama.

Just settin' the ol' record straight.

I haven't tried EQ2 at all and don't intend to, not because of any perceived lack of game quality or because of any server problems but because of the horrific experiences I've had in the past dealing with Sony and Verant.

I'm guessing that their extended server downtime brought more than a couple of people over to WoW to check it out since they couldn't get their EQ2 fix.

Prolly the same amount of people that came over to EQ2 when they didn't want to wait in a que to play WOW

But if you're having trouble, you have a few choices - you can bitch on a forum, or you can look for alternative places to get the file.

The choice is yours...

But bitching won't get WoW patched...

This is a forum about games and a topic about a WOW Patch.  I will complain in here all I want thank you.  Coincidentlly, somone who worked on the game reads the forums here.  What better place to show my displeasure with a whacked out patch system.  And thanks but no thanks on your "alternate places" idea as your first link was full of virus crap.

Ill just dload it at snail pace over nite or uninstall and cancel...the choice is mine after all

You know I jacked around with my firewall but forgot all about my router.  No wonder it has taken over an hour so far and is not done yet.

I think the whole bittorrent thing is stupid.  I have a limit on my outbound traffic/day.  If I go over my download rate gets reduced.  I'm playing to play their game, I shouldn't have to pay to distribute their patches too.

No matter how much time, money or resources you put into it... shit is gonna go wrong.   I seriously doubt this was some small oversite that caused this major a meltdown.  Does it make it excusable...not really.  It has however, been a pretty smooth launch up untill this incident.  I also think they went well above the normal compensation by offering not only 3 free days but 2 days of bonus expierince and a wipe of all exp debt.  Id say the recognized the severity of the situation and acted accordingly, defintly not "some weak make-goods".

Hey, don't be hating on the dagger-wielding Warriors!!!  My housemate (30th lvl Warrior) uses two daggers and has a very good reason:  they attack insanely fast and build up the Rage very quickly.  I was skeptical at first, but after watching him in fights I have to say I'm a believer.  It also helps to have two rare daggers that do plenty of damage.
