2601  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / PVP Reward System on: March 11, 2005, 08:59:40 PM
Quote from: "Sepiche"
I really do fail to see why EVERY aspect of WoW has to be casual friendly.  I mean the game as a whole is beautiful in it's ability to let you get some satisfaction in under 2 hours if that's all the time you have.  It seems reasonable to me that there are some portions of the game that cater to the long term, hardcore players, and the PVP rewards are one of those things.

I'm not exactly a casual player, but I still only play for 10 - 15 hours a week usually.  The fact that I won't be able get very high in the rankings is fine by me... as long as I can hop on and fight in the battlegrounds if I so choose, I'll be happy with whatever rank I have time to get to.

s

I think the problem alot of people have is that the game presents itself as this casual, doable in small chunks meandering along untill you get close to 60.  Then it turns into a hardcore, raiding, need at least 3+hours to get anything done type game.  It's an abrupt change and i'd imagine shocking/dissapointing to alot of players new to the genre(which was a big chunk of Blizz's audience) Sure you can all goto the BG when your 60 but it's the people that don't play 'casual' who you are gonne be cursing when they kick your ass all day because they are wearing all uber purple gear and your stuck in your wussy gear that was fine for getting to 60 in a non instance pve fashion.  It's really almost 2 different games.

What about Enchanters?

Can they solo?

An ex EQ2 player told me that no one does cc in EQ2, so Enchanters were not popular.

Enchanters arnt neccessary for a really successfull group like they were in EQ1.  However, like Arkon said, they go a long way to making an encounter alot easier and with les downtime.  They are rather rare though so if you like to play something'different' from everyone else go for it.

Isn't there some bruhaha about the 512mb not equalling a significant performance difference over 256?

It depends on how a game is designed. Textures are loaded into video memory as much as possible. Textures that are not in video memory have to be "pulled" from your hard drive and swapped out with existing ones, which created stuttering and is really not an optimal choice.

I do not think any games other than Doom 3 currently have settings that push more than 256mb of textures into video memory. The ultra setting in Doom 3 needs to load approx. 500 mb of textures into video memory in order to avoid swapping.

So its really all about how the game is designed.

Cant say for sure but EQ2 is prolly another game that could take advantage of this.  So 2 games for prolly $500 smile.

A lot more things? Where? I see nothing!

Ah, ok, guess that is a good way to agrue stuff.

Go REread the opening post on this thread again Toe.  He bitches about lack of communication, then goes into whacked out population numbers, then talks about shitty forums etc, then at the very end of the post he ask "What has blizzard done with all this time."  Those were the main points he was upset with...lack of communication and severly outbalanced server poplulations.  But I guess jumping on his one overexaggerated ancedote makes for good arguing eh?

29. Super Mario Kart (1992: Super NES)

Nor does that.  It's a good game, but the 'racing' genre started long before it.  Plus, outside of Nintendo, no one's bothered to follow the Mario Kart formula, so it's not that essential in the least.

Your kidding right?
Mario Kart had 4 palyer split screen racing and was hugely popular.  It was one of the first 4 player  split screen games that I remember.  Games you are forgeting that "followed the formula"
Crash Team Racing 1 and 2
Smurfs Racing
Star Wars lame Kart game
Diddy kong Racing
Theres at least a couple more I cant remeber as well.  Seemd for awhile that every succesfull platformer ws coming out with a 'kart' racing game.

Edit: heres a few more games that didn't follow the mario Kart formula

looney Tunes space race
toy story racer
wacky racers(dreamcast even)
speed punks
south park rally
muppet race mania
chocobo racing
mikey's speedway usa

looks more like Mario Cart starte a whole sub-genre in racing.

Once you have talked to the guy you werent sent to in 'The Hollows' you can return to the contact that sent you there ignoring all the missions in that zone.  Its a hazard zone much like Faultline and Boomtown and not reccommened for solo play.

Jaddison,
If I remeber correctly, I belive Saga of Ryzom has alot of Dynamic Mobs that will go about doing they're own thing.  They will attack settlements and permantly alter the landscape.  I'm not 100% sure on how much they actually change etc but thought you might wanna give it a closer look.  Let me know what ya think.
Also, I believe  Asheron's Call 1 & 2 also having mobs that would attack and destroy towns.  AC2 has about 500 people playing but AC1 I hear still has a pretty good community albiet smaller then some of the newer games.
I believe some recently canned projects were to incoperate some of your ideas as well.  At least they are trying to do some of these things but haven't figured out how to make it feasible yet.  I think your on the right path though and look towards the next genartion of MMORPG to do more dynamic things to differinate them from the pack.

Note: all of this is coming from my awfull memeory so if i'm off in my descriptions please dont sue me smile

I played a Rogue to lvl 30 on a pvp server.  I could regularlily take any class out (even up to 5 + lvls higher then me except maybe pallys) if I got the jump on them.  1 vs 1 when 1 is a rogue is grossly unblanced.  Go ahead and say 'yea but you ganked him when you were stealth".  Well duh im a rogue, I'm just using my skill sets.  Hell I'd even let them finesh fighting and rest up first smile.   Skill defintly helps, but i'd say bad skill is more of a hinderance then good skills are an advantage...if that makes sense smile.

Its impratical because it would put them out of buisness.   You can't just whip up some content that will be seen by one person once and then never again.  It takes a team of people to do even the smallest instance in a game.   How on earth do you think they could afford this?  You are not paying $200 a month.

edit to add:  If you are burning on 2 of the best the genre has to offer then perhaps the genre is not for you...and thats ok smile

i have to disagree because they would not need to make individual one of a kind content to make it so that a players actions had meaning in the world.  Instead of picking evil or good at the start you could have a world where actions determine your path and reputation would drive where you would be welome and where you would be feared and attacked.  You could have a world where you can build things or destroy things but destroying or building would have consequences.

An example in WoW is how is it as a druid I suffer no consequences for attacking animals who do not attack me?  How friggin druid like is that?  Why is it in CoH I am a hero but i can run by and ignore an NPC being mugged but there are no consequences?  What burns me out is that in WoW and CoH my actions have no lasting impact on anything and I can't do anything to make a lasting impact if i wanted to.

At least in EQ2 if i devote myself to crafting i will gain stature in my crafting guild and am able to make things better than what drops...if i choose to dedicate the time to make it up the ranks.  At least in a guild my in EQ2 my actions have an impact.  There are so many possibilities beyond having stylized individual content.

None of your examples have a 'lasting difference' on the gameworld as you put in your intial post.  Well except the building and destroying thing which we already covered.  In order to have al 'lasting difference' on the game world you would have to be able to permantly alter it for good or bad.  this would in turn make all prior content that was affected by this change now obselote.  Which would in turn cause the devolpers to have to create new content.  Guess whos gonna be pissed they had spent 20 hours game time getting to the final part of the game altering quest only to have some other dude whos been on 24 hrs straight finesh it 5 minutes earlier.  Ask the Horizons develpoers how long they excepted a server to unlock the first extra race.  I'm guessing it wasnt a week of game time smile.  Then they had to put up artifical content choke points to slow down people from whipping thorugh theyre 'world altering' content before the free month was up.  Then everybody left the game.

I'm not diggin into ya or anything as i'd love to see some of your ideas in a MMORPG.  And with the faction system in EQ1 and 2 some of them already are(refrencing your first paragraph)..  But I also understand the limitations of playing in a persistant world with 2000 other people.

COH does have consrtuction crews!  They are currently building the Arena's for the next update that will introduce some PVP action.  You cant mess with them however frown.

I also remeber reading that with City of Villians your super team will be able to assualt and destroy evil hideouts.  The evil SG's will have to rebuild them and such.  Whether that makes it to retail?
2621  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / MMO Burnout on: February 18, 2005, 03:53:58 PM
COH has the capabilities to make all those pretty city maps destructiable.  They quickly came to the correct conclusion that with this in effect Paragon City qould be reduced to rubble in about 10 minutes.  While this would be insanly fun for the destructors it would totally suck for everyone else.  And there's your problem.  You can not design changing content that effects only one player when you have thousands on the same server.  Its not cost or time effective.

Alchiemest are great for incapacitating and debuffing groups of mosnters.  They also can heal and make potions.  I split the Rogue skills up between the Bard and Gadgeteer.  Having both also insures you dont miss out on using alot of fun toys.   Optionally change class on the priest at lvl 9ish to Bishop if you want to pick up some extra magic ummph, but plan accordingly.

Problem:

Causes?:
Was doing some matienacne on it before work this morning. Ran spybot, then adaware. Checked for and installed latest win security update. Then updated norton antivirus via the 'live udate'. It neeed new definitions and something core something?(only word I remeber was core). After that update it wanted to reboot and thats when the problem started.

Solutions?:
Im stumped. Thanks in advance for any help.

Yeah Blizzard really needs a test server.  Their internal QA isn't cutting the mustard.

I think the communication "issues" are a result of the quality of posters on Blizzard's forums rather than any size/organizational issues.

Statesman can post the stuff he does because CoH has an incredibly mature customer base.  Sure, there's a lot of whining, but there's enough solid posters to make tolerating them worthwhile.  Not so with Blizzard and it's world famous battle.net ghetto.  God, and they just released the game in Korea too *shudder*.

I'd be interested in demographical information.
'

LOL!  City of Heros is a game about superheros, its customer base is not incredibly mature.  Besides, what do obnoxious posters have to do with somone in the "know" posting usefull patch/balancing/content info?  Why is there less whining on COH boards?  Maybe because Cryptic has been up front and  willing to share info with its customers from the begining.  Its a totally different customer service philsophy.

Actually the will of forsaken isn't nearly as good a benefit as what they dwarf priests get. Dwarf priests get fear ward, which lasts 10 minutes and negates one use of fear against the person. You can cast it on everyone in your group or keep it on yourself in contested areas if you are afraid of being jumped and feared. I would consider fear ward a racial ability since only dwarves can get it. Plus, dwarf priests also get desperate prayer which is a godsend to staying alive in those, well, desperate situations you are about to die in. smile

That is far better than a 15 second fear protection that has to be turned on and is only usable every 5 minutes.

Granted, will of forsaken beats out any other racial ability if you are not a dwarf and a priest.

.

Actully, Will of forsaken is a 20 second ability and a 1.5 minute cooldown.  Also, it not only prevents you from being feared(and stunned, charmed, zzzz)it will wipe out any of these prexisting conditions.   I usually will let them fear/stun whatever me before applying it.  This usually causes them to get confidant/stupid. Heres how it plays(ideally)...I get stunned, held, charmed, etc.  Let this run for a second or 2 then hit WOF wiping out its effects.  They usually have either noticed its broken or feeling over confident have turned they're attention elsewhere(most ideal).  I can either turn and attack them back(if they havent noticed its broken) or hit vanish after WOF and dissappear(if they have noticed) only to reappear hopfully behind them introducing my dagger to they're back.  Most of the time they havent figured out why I broke they're first spell and will try to reapply it...suckers smile.  Now this mostly only works 1 vs 1 but can be effective in smaller skirmishes.  Alot of Alliance i have talked to say undead rogues with WOF give them fits.
