Barcode Kingdom is a different fun little game I got last night.  It reminds me a little of Monster Rancher from the PS1 conceptually, which  I absolutely adored..  Basically you scan barcodes that then generate little soldiers of varying classes and rarity.  You can also scan them for creating weapons/armor for them.  Then you travel around the map doing quest, building up your castle, gaining levels, etc.  It's only $99 but has some PTW elelments as every thing takes up action point that regenerate over time.   It's not super deep that I can tell so far and combat is auto resolved except for drinking potions but I spent all night running around scanning stuff.  Dial soap FTW!

did it really get that bad in 3-4 hours or did they just not pay any attention to forecasts?

The South is just not prepared for any amount of snow.  I heard reports that it was "three fingers" deep, which is nothing, of course.  However, because this is such a rare occurrence, no one has snow tires (or even all-weather tires), the cities don't have plows ready to go (or any nearby, even) or salt/sand, and the drivers just aren't used to it (which tends to slow them down).

As a result, even that small amount of snow can lead to a "state of emergency" (which has been declared in at least one major city as of yesterday...I think Atlanta, maybe?).

We were hearing all kinds of reports of commutes that normally take a half an hour having people getting home at nearly 10pm last night.

That is the ultra simplified northern point of view version smile.  It wasn't snow on the roads it was 2 inches of ice with  snow on top.  It happened instantly during the commute and it was literally freezing under cars while they were stuck in traffic.  Then due to every single person in Atlanta trying to get home or to school or daycare at the same time it was a massive cluster.  Took me 8 hours with a 2 mile hike with my 4 year old to get home.  I had friends who slept on the highway, others never got to daycare.

Jebus, seriously?  Is it reflected on the listed price, so imported things just always look more expensive, or do you just know that when you ring up the price it'll be 25% more expensive?

I think the Norwegian import tax is similar, and most serious online retailers (including Amazon) will show clearly on the invoice and the checkout page how much you're actually paying in taxes out of the full amount you're being charged.

Some countries in Europe have a 100% import/duty tax on bringing in cars form the US.  That's right you buy it twice.  I believe 'classic' cars 25 years old are exempt.

So... I'm torn between just casual support and something more substantial (i.e. alpha and beta testing) where I might actually be able to affect the gameplay.

The core gameplay is a helluva lot of fun but grows stale without the persistent hook.  That and the expensive cost of new mechs keeps me away.  They are just overpriced imo.  If they could get the Mechs in the $5-$20 range and/or sell premium time at $15-$20 a month then add new content this game would explode imo.  Of course that is not a sure thing but apparently spitting out expensive new mechs every month to feed their whales is. I still fire it up once every few weeks for a hour or three but am done spending money on it at his point.  I've spent about $60 and have one premium mech, extra bays and blew the rest on premium time.  Much better bang for my buck out there.

If you have a minute and feel like it could you expand on what you think more RAM will mean for open world games moving forward?  Besides the obvious loading screens. Well even that a little, seamless dungeon and town entry?  Not so much from a developer perspective but from a gameplay perspective for the end user?  I have not been paying much attention to the new Gen of consoles due to just getting a new PC finally and having zero chance of talking wife into a new console as well.  However, if they are really going to be that more powerful than last gen I am very intrigued and may have to sell a kidney or something smile

There we go, Thanks Tilt.  So a roughly twice the RAM increase from Last gen to this, that is certainly significant and exciting!  I apologize for the high horse comment I was just frustrated.  Also, I was not being hateful to Bethesda, I am sure they are well aware of the bugs their games are filled with.  Plus as the consumer I care not for why they are there (hardware or software related) just that they are there.  That being said as bitchy as I may sound they keep getting my money for anything they put out.

Read again. It's not about them releasing bug-free or bug-ridden games. His claim is that increased console resources will just cause Bethesda to push the goalposts to the point where they will make just as many and as serious bugs in the future, with the implication that they are incompetent developers. If all he was saying is that Bethesda's games tend to be buggy, that would be fine. Instead he's using his own lack of knowledge about the subject to make broad claims about their developers' capabilities with hardware limits that he also doesn't understand. When informed about the realities of these restrictions from someone in the same kind of position as these developers, I'm told to get off my "developer high horse", further cementing his disinterest in anything except his own unfounded theories. As someone who has also worked under tight restrictions in game development, I find his accusations of incompetence insulting.

Kathode used to be active on these forums. I wonder what he would have had to say about morlac's claims.

That is not what I am saying at all, you keep moving the goal post!

Reread this :
"See I don't buy this more/better tech will allow them to make a better game stuff. If they couldn't do better wiith the restrictions imposed by hardware, having more power will only allow them to continue to be sloppy.

While I understand where you're coming from with that argument, you have no idea how absurdly restrictive the limitations from the previous console generation were. There's a damn good reason why only Bethesda has been making this kind of game up until now. It's because only they were insane enough to try, and even succeed. Now that the worst restrictions are lifted with this new console generation, we'll see other games in this genre. The Witcher 3 is the first one out.

Their games are sloppy on Pc (always have been) as well so console power does not have anything to with it.  Which is why he truthfully said : " Anyway,  it is the mods that ultimately make these game better but those aren't on consoles."  In other words no amount of extra console power can save Bethesda from making a sloppy game.  I would never consider playing one of their games on console even If I bought a used Xbox to just to play Morrowind.  smile.  I wisely got a PC capable a year later and modded that sucker up!  "

You keep claiming that more RAM power equates to unsloppy programming.  You have no basis for this other than to keep asserting that extra RAM will be this magic fix all.  This has ALWAYS been about sloppy programming aka BUGS.  So again what was the RAM increase from Xbox to 360?  Then what was it from 360 to XBOX one?  Which was a higher increase?  How will more RAM equate to less bugs?  You have never answered this except top say I'm right and your wrong.  I never called them lazy or incompetent I just agreed their games were 'sloppy' which may not be the best term.  They make crazy ambitious games with awesome worlds to explore but thye are usually bug filled and always have been.  I am cool with that because bugs don't generally scare me if the game is fun and theirs always are for me.  I hope things change with this generation but history says otherwise...that is all I have been asserting.

Edit to add:  You finally answered how RAM will help, thanks it is interesting!
Other impossibly made open world games :  Two worlds 1 & 2, Red Dead Redemption, Grand theft series, Dead Island, Deus Ex, Saints Row, Far Cry 2 & 3, Mercenaries, I am sure I am forgetting more.  Now Bethesda games are huge but other people can pull it off.

Spare me the sarcasm.

It won't save them from bugs, but it will save them from having such tight constraints with system resources that the smallest little ripple causes a tsunami.

If you want to learn more about the reason things are like this, look into the memory restrictions on Xbox 360 and PS3. You don't know how bad it is until you realize that developers even have to restrict the amount of written text in games because even a single paragraph extra could push them over the limit. Regular games can work around these issues much, much, MUCH easier than a huge open world RPG.

But you're clearly hellbent on believing that Bethesda simply doesn't care, and that their ranks are filled with amateurs. As a developer that mindset makes me roll my eyes in frustration.

Roll away!

Get off your I'm a Developer high horse.  All the extra HP will do is create more feature bloat to take away whatever gains they had from the previous system.  What was the power advantage from Xbox to 360?  Why did this issue not go away then?  I would guess because along with every increase in raw power you have increases in graphic fidelity, physics, Higher FPS, less loading screens, etc.  Bethesda pushes consoles to their limit but can't automagically make them as good as PC's.  Face it Bethesda makes sloppy games that the mod community fix up.  It's ok.  I still love them and their games.  Hell I upgrade and buy Pc's to play them.

Edit to Add: you even admitted it won't save them from bugs! which was the entire point I was making!

Actually, it has everything to do with it. The PC versions of Bethesda's games are just upscaled versions of the console games. They are still designed around the console restrictions. Porting a game to a PC doesn't magically fix issues introduced in order to solve basic design problems.

So the awesome computing power of the Xbox er Xbox360 no that's the Xbone will finally enable Bethesda to release a non sloppy buggy game!  Yep that's it.  Finally! all these games and consoles but this is the one!  Promise.

Well, the comparison isn't 1:1 in scale or impact, but it works. Paul probably wouldn't tell his buddy, who races, to slow down because of his comfort level with both his friends ability to drive, as well as his own comfort with high speeds.

The magnitude of the tragedy is lessened by the fact that both people knew better than to speed but chose not to, and that other than possibly Paul himself a victim of Rodas' accident while driving Paul's car.

That still doesn't make his daughter miss her dad any less.

Not really.  Your Uncle's recklessness had zero chance to impact anyone but himself.  If they were stupid kids I would feel bad for them but these grown men should have known better.  Maybe Paul should have thought more about that daughter of his prior to heading out for this joyride.  My 'risky' behavior pretty much went away after the birth of mine and I use to do all kinds of stupid shit.  Not trying to come off too callous or unsympathetic (probably failing) but the outpouring of celebrity sympathy just rubs me wrong.  I should just back out of this thread at this point.

My uncle once lost 2.5 fingers working on a ban-saw. He's a general contractor and has worked with power tools all the time. Familiarity breeds recklessness, but tragedy is tragedy, regardless of personal success or skill.

Neither man would have elected to hit a tree at high speeds - it may not elicit a lot of sympathy and whether that is envy, apathy, or some sort of reasoning that this was darwinian in nature, I will miss seeing Paul in movies.

He was not my favorite actor, but I certainly enjoyed him and I liked the fact that he could play more than just "good guys".

Not sure that analogy really works but sorry to hear about your Uncle.  I get what you mean though.  However, these guys knowingly engaged in risky behavior on a public street.  A street not designed for the high rate of speed they were likely travelling.  That is not tragic, it is the consequence of risky, stupid and unnecessary  behavior.  Tragic is a kid dying of cancer.  Better yet, tragic would have been if their stupid little escapade resulted in an innocent bystander getting killed.  Best yet, tragic was when my cousin died by getting T-Boned from a truck driver going way too fast and running a red light.  I do feel bad for their families that lost them but I just can't feel to sympathetic to them.  Hopefully some good will come out of it.  This should be used as a powerful lesson to young drivers who enjoyed his movies glorifying this type of behavior.  Thinks don't tend to work out like they do in the movies.

With those guys, driving at high speed doesnt have to be about impressing someone.  It is far more likely that, with their hobbies and life styles, they were out having some fun.  Sometimes that just doesnt end well.

Either or they were out on a public street driving fast enough to incinerate the car they were in.  Stupid, and lucky nobody else got hurt due to their reckless behavior.

There's no may about it really. Unless there's a cockpit recorder. It's unfortunate that the driver felt the need to speed but I'm guessing that driving a porsche probably does that to a person. The lesson that I'm taking away from all of this is that when I have a porsche, nobody drives it but me.

They have already pulled the 'Black box' (on board PC) out of it and are looking at security cameras In the area.  They both loved fast cars and I'm sure they loved to drive them fast.  They were in a area known for racing (1 mile loop in industrial zone on a weekend).  Just because they have known each other for years does not mean he was not trying to impress him. They were men and that is what we do.  That being said, not sure it's going to take a super sleuth to figure out that he was driving like an idiot.  I'm having a hard time to feel a ton of sympathy here, outstanding citizen or not.  Stupid acts lead to bad consequences.
