Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / sony sued over resistance
|
on: June 09, 2007, 02:48:44 PM
|
this is quite funny actually, the church of england is suing sony for using manchester cathedral as a backdrop in resistance:fall of man religion will get involved in anything nowadays.....i can just see the vicar balasting those aliens away http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=165667heres what the link says. The Church of England is to sue Sony over the use of Manchester Cathedral as the backdrop to Resistance, which the ITV labels, incidentally, "a violent computer game". It's about shooting make-believe aliens with make-believe guns, isn't it?
Anyway, religious leaders have apparently accused Sony of "desecrating" the cathedral. Again ITV jumps in to let us know that Resistance: Fall of Man is a PlayStation 3 game "in which hundreds are killed during a virtual shoot-out inside the building". Makes it sounds like a real-life WWII documentary, or something.
Back to the story and the Church says Sony didn't ask for permission to use the cathedral and has demanded an apology and the removal of the game from shop shelves - otherwise legal action will be considered. Now that's a big ask, especially as it's one of PS3's biggest sellers. Sony has not returned calls to officials from the Church, says ITV.
It doesn't end there though. Oh no. Sony has also been branded "irresponsible" for choosing Manchester, which ITV describes as "a city plagued by gun violence". Bishop of Manchester, the Rt Rev Nigel McCulloch, said: "It is well known that Manchester has a gun crime problem. For a global manufacturer to re-create one of our great Cathedrals with photo-realistic quality and then encourage people to have guns battles in the building is beyond belief and highly irresponsible."
ITV concluded by saying that during the game "players are asked to assume the role of an army sergeant and win a battle" and that screenshots show the interior of the Cathedral "with the player's gun ready to fight; soldiers can be seen elsewhere in the nave taking aim".
We don't know what's worse; accusing Sony of desecrating a cathedral, talking about Resistance like it's real-life or describing Manchester as a city plagued by gun violence. Sound off below. now,i live in Manchester, and i am in no way religious....so,now knowing this about Manchester cathedral...i wanna play the game even more, and i am thinking that CoE have given this game a little bit more advertising that sony wont mind at all!!....sued or not sued

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / finally....no final fantasy for 360
|
on: June 06, 2007, 06:07:53 AM
|
well....its been said, the xbox 360 will not see final fantasy any time soon...no final fantasy 13....or FF13 versus looks like i am gonna have to get that PS3 after all.......but not until FF13 comes out, which will be next year sometime....damn,1 console for 2 games(MGS4 being the other)...BUT.to tell you the truth,as much as i am looking forward to FF13....blue dragon and lost odyssey are the ones i am looking forward to more, hopefully if they sell well in the west, and PS3 continues to do...okay-ish,then maybe Squeenix will get jealous and change their mind...who knows....at the moment though it seems it will just be project sypheed and the last remnant from SE...shame with this news and yesterdays(or the day before)news that they arent going to remake FF7...i sometimes wonder if they have their head screwed on right and please, lets not make this a PS3 v 360 thing http://kotaku.com/gaming/this-page-intentionally-left-blank/no-final-fantasy-for-you-xbox-266191.phpand from IGN: US, June 5, 2007 - Looking for more Final Fantasy following the Xbox 360 port of Final Fantasy XI? Then you're going to have to look to a different next generation system. A Square Enix executive has disclosed to Japan's Nikkei BP that the company currently has no plans for Final Fantasy games on the 360. Noting that the PS3 is getting Final Fantasy XIII, the website asked Square Enix's Shinji Hashimoto if the Wii or Xbox 360 will also be getting games in the series. "For the Wii, we have FF Crystal Chronicles in production," replied Hashimoto. "As for FF on the Xbox 360, it's currently a completely blank page." Strong words from Hashimoto, although perhaps if everyone goes out and buys Last Remnant (that includes you!), Square Enix will have a change of heart.

Shinra just collapsed the plate on Sector 7 last night. (I assume we’re not going to bother with spoiler tags, since the game is 10 years old). There is a short cinematic that I never really paid much attention to before. The collapsing plate is shown through a Sector 7 resident’s front room window. They are obviously just sitting around watching TV, when suddenly the sky literally collapses and crushes an entire city. You then see President Shinra looking out over the wreckage from the top of Shinra tower while an operatic score plays in the background. The guy just killed thousands of people, and he’s simply having a glass of wine while he looks out over the carnage. Those Shinra folks are some seriously evil, heartless bastards.
I’ve really enjoyed the 4 hours I’ve put in so far, and should be able to get a few more hours in this week. It’s good to start this one again.
thats exactly where i am,i am just about to head for the shinra building and if i remember rightly go up those 600million flight of stairs that takes forever(!)

My real disappointment was with my PS2, however!
So strange that the PS2 can't emulate this one game properly. And here I thought the console had like 99% compatibility with PS1 games (and most of those were off-shoot games that weren't well known). i am currently playing final fantasy 7 on my PS2,have done many a time...no problems whatsoever

How long does the Halo 3 Beta last? I thought that was over at the end of May. If It's going for a while then I'll have to go pick up Crackdown.
i think it ends on june 10th...it was gonna be a few days sooner, but because the beta went up a few hours later than planned, they extended it...or so they would have us believe....but i think we have at least another week of HALO3

I often wonder if WWII is used as much as it is because it seems that the Nazis are a universally agreed upon evil. However looking at the Revolutionary war, perhaps it is more difficult to sell the idea due to the less defined good vs. evil nature of the war. You are right. This is probably true in fact. I suppose the revolutionary or civil war would be an interesting game, as you're killing people who are now either parts of our country or our allies. I think they are going to start doing the war on terror more now. Think Call of Duty modern warfare. i have often wondered how these type of games(or even the vietnam games)fair in the countries that are in the games considered evil...for example, how does COD games go down in germany...MOH:rising sun in japan...or as said the vietnam games (i actually first thought something like this when watching indiana jones and the last crusade....wondering if Germans found it great entertainment as i did) maybe this is why star wars is so universally successful,LOL

What's the deal with soul collecting?
pretty much a pain in the ass...the only achievement i havent got once you collect 3 severed shrunken mother heads(if you have sen the film you will know what i mean)...you can then activate the 'jackanism'..by pressing all 3 the left and right triggers and the A button at the same time....then whoever you kill while you have the flaming green sword will go towards your 100 soul goal....it doesnt last for long, and you can activate it with less than 3 heads...but it doesnt last as long you can replay levels to get souls...but,if you already have 10 souls on that level...and then do it again, start the level again and get 13 souls, then your tally will only go up by 3 as i said,it is a pain in the ass,as you activate it,usually all the enemies die around you ...and they dont count towards your soul goal...and thn no more enemies appear(usually)...and so the whole 'jackanism' thing is wasted.......and another thing is that you can only do it by playing as Jack, and you dont always play as Jack on some levels

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360] Mass Effect inches closer to launch
|
on: May 28, 2007, 11:20:30 PM

interview from C and VG Lord knows we'd wash with sandpaper for the opportunity to take Mass Effect home this weekend, but we'll just have to make do with the first hour we sat through with BioWare co-doctors Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk.
Mass Effect is an incredibly ambitious title. What measures are you taking to make sure that one area of the game, say the exploration, role-playing or combat side, doesn't fall short of the others?
Ray Muzyka: That's a great question. Over the last few years we've been really focusing on what a BioWare game is and for us there's four core activity pillars, as we call them. These are the pillars of the game, the tenants that we're really focusing on. We focus on all of them to varying degrees and in different ways in different BioWare games.
In Mass Effect like in all BioWare games we're focusing on the story, the character and amazing digital actors. We're focusing on making really accessible, fun action combat. We've got exploration, the galaxy map, uncharted worlds and your own rover to drive around in.
There's also customisation options; the way you change yourself, the way you customise your characters at the start of the game and who you bring with you on your travels.
All of those aspects of the game are being developed in parallel. Right from the start they were part of the original vision of the game, so they're not separate elements, they're a unified whole. So we're not building separate parts of the building together, we're sort of chaining them together. You really feel compelled to go from a story area to an exploration area, to combat.
Greg Zeschuk: I suppose the simple answer is; we play it. We play our games, we finish them multiple times. So it's the judgement of the team and ourselves to make sure it's good simply by experiencing it. It's hard when you do it multiple times to get a sense for it, but we really do make sure it holds together and that a super high standard is always maintained.
Ray Muzyka: We just don't let a game out the door until we're sure and have finished it multiple times. It's got to be polished, it's got to be great and each game has to be better than the last. We're really confident this is going to be the best game BioWare has ever done.
You've managed to shoe-horn the game on to one DVD. What are the consequences of that? Has anything had to be held back for downloadble content?
Ray Muzyka: We haven't revealed any plans yet for post-release content; download, episodic. But Mass Effect is a natural fit for that kind of thing.
For the longest time we were pretty sure we were going to have to fit the game content onto two DVDs, because there's just so much content in the game. Right now it looks like we're going to get it on one and it's been difficult because there's a lot of content. It's a very ambitious title.
The voice throughout the game as well; for the main character, all the party members; everybody talks.
Greg Zeschuk: There's so much. We're probably going to have multiple languages per disc as well - we're still working that detail out. There is again, so much voice talent and stuff going into the game.
Speaking of voice talent, can you tell us about the actors you're using?
Greg Zeschuk: There's over a hundred I think. There 300 characters; it's pretty crazy in a good way.
Ray Muzyka: It's all about conveying the personalities of the characters. You have to have credible characters, the dialogue has to flow. We've got some famous actors for the voice acting as well. We haven't announced who they are yet but you may be able to pick them out.
Greg Zeschuk: Someone actually guessed one or two in the last demo. We're not saying anything about that!
The animation work on the characters themselves is impressive. Are you motion capturing you voice actors' movements at all?
Greg Zeschuk: Oh yeah. The cut-scenes are all motion captured. This has actually been an amazing learning experience for us in terms of the voice acting. It's more conversational than we've ever done, it flows.
Sometimes the actors are together in the studio but often there not, so we've had to do a moderate number of re-takes to actually make conversation flow and to make it sound like a real conversation. You kind of imagine that it's all acted out and people voice their lines after, but we're literally just going along and creating it in real-time.
It's very exciting. We have very solid scripts but sometimes just to get that conversational sound you have to alter it.
Ray Muzyka: The dialogue system is a proprietary system we've created, and the reason why the conversations are all part of that is because it's so easy to make choices that constantly map. For example, there's an angry option on the bottom right and there's a nice option on the top right. The system allows players to have the dialogue conversation flow.
Greg Zeschuk: You can purposely interrupt the conversations as well, so it's almost as if you're kind of role-playing the conversation. I remember when I first played with the dialogue system I was like, 'wow'. It really does feel like you're in the scene dictating what your lines are. It really brings you in to the experience.
How difficult has it been to make each world in the game different and distinct?
Ray Muzyka: We have a big team. We have a lot of people working on this; it's the biggest team we've ever fielded. We've got 130 people working on it, so that's a lot of content creators, a lot of testers. We're on the polish phase now kind of finishing up some content, optimising and fixing bugs. So we've had a big team for a long time and it's a grand vision, and to achieve that vision you need a large group of talented people.
Part of the vision was to have a galaxy to explore. You have to have variety in the worlds; ice worlds, swamp worlds, desert worlds and things like that. There's a whole range of choices in the places you can go. You can just focus on the mains storyline and the critical path, but the offroad path is just so tempting because there's so many cool things to explore.
There's full quest-based planets, there's planets with dungeons to explore and there's planets where you just walk around outside and find some cool loot and take off.
Greg Zeschuk: There was also a very long conceptual phase for the game. In other words we spent six to eight months in the beginning conceiving how things would look. A large amount of work was spent with the ground work and visuals, so if we did actually end up building it there was a real clear idea what the armour looks like, what the environments look like and what the monster look like.
Ray Muzyka: We've got some amazing art up on our wall. All the concept art is just plastered all over the place. We've even got screenshots up on the wall and that's the best part; it really has been achieved. You can put the screenshot next to the original concept piece and that's what it looks like. The team's done an amazing job on the art side. http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=164821i think it would of been better on two discs myself

A bit off topic, but this discussion reminds me of the early 90's when Sierra set up a 1-900 number for hints to their games. You would navigate though the menu to get a hint, getting progressively more specific instructions on what to do. All at $2.00 a minute or whatever the price was.
God I love the internet.
ahh,1997 when i rang up from my Mums phone the hotline for Final Fantasy 7....it took me ages to get to the right place i wanted, and when it finally told me what to do,i was very embarrased(even though it was a recording)..as it was so obvious......and then a month later my mum cut off my balls......true story!!,LOL

i have finished the game,i just need to collect the 100 souls, then everything is done...its a good enough game...but i bought it on friday...so,perhaps anyone who is thinking of buying it....rent it instead
the levels, are nice and at a good difficulty,a few times it took me a while to get through some of the puzzles, but then when going through the levels again,to collect stuff you may of missed...you can fly right through it
7/10....if it was a bigger(longer)game and wasnt as repeditive...it could of easily been a 9...graphics(therfor atmosphere) and level layout is what really makes this work

The trailer is pretty attractive, but I really don't want another FF: CC game. I liked CC the first 30 minutes or so, but quickly lost interest after that. Why can't Square just make a real turn based RPG for the Wii?
Eventhough this is an action-Rpg, I don't think it has too much in common with the first one other than Name. i hope so,as come year 4 on the first one i lost interest...and i knew it was a game, best played with friends...and i dont have any ...and even if i did i wouldnt want them in MY game of final fantasy!!,i dunno,i just like my RPGs single player(except 11 of course)
