you gotta keep hitting the 'o' button fast (not just once) in order to really damage it.  if you do it enough, you'll bang its head against the pole.  do that four times...
2  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Best mods for Diablo 2 LOD on: March 20, 2005, 04:12:14 AM
Decided to give this one another go and was wondering what mods I should be using (just for single player)?  After loading the game again real quick, I know right off the bat that I would love an expanded inventory mod and perhaps a resolution update...

I've only played through once when it first came out, without any mods.  I've just installed the latest patch.

3  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Identity Theft - I'm a victim on: March 01, 2005, 06:27:06 AM
Don't know how it works in your state, but in CA victms of identity theft can put security freezes on their credit for free (if you don't have a police report you have to pay a small fee for each of the three credit agencies).  This basically gives you a pin number for your credit so that no one can open an account without it.  Apparently this means that even if someone has all of your important info, it'll do them no good.

Again, I don't know if this is possible in your state but here's the basic information
4  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Survivor 2/17 on: February 18, 2005, 05:36:00 PM
Was the guy who got voted out the same one who jumped off the boat and swam for it?  Just trying to figure out if there was a reason he was avoided other than random chance.

How about that boat flippin over?  I was surprised no one got hurt and even more surprised that they just left the gear that sunk to the bottom.  Maybe the water is deeper than it looks, but I wouldn't think it would be too hard to get it back up with a couple of people (even with the weights in it).

And how does Survivor always trick these people into wearing the wrong clothes (mini skirt? high heels?) every time?

6  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Another Half-Life 2 question (AI allies) on: January 10, 2005, 11:50:42 PM
The AI allies in HL2 drove me nuts.  They always seemed to be behind me when I wanted to back up, in front of me when I was trying to shoot something (it even happened while I was shooting a rocket, so we all died) AND telling me to reload my friggin gun every five (it seemed like FIVE ) minutes.  When I found out I couldn't kill them I was very upset.
7  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / domain name registration question on: January 10, 2005, 11:43:34 PM
well i used the 'Already have a domain name? Use it with Yahoo! plan' and the site has worked fine after following their directions.

anyway, the guys agreed to refund the nine hundred million dollars  they wanted to charge for one year so it worked out in the end.

thanks anyway, tho.[/url]
8  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / domain name registration question on: January 08, 2005, 04:40:26 AM
I have a website that I registered a year ago using  Since then I learn that they are very expensive so I didn't renew with them.  Instead, I renewed using a yahoo promo a few days ago for 4 bucks or something.  NOW, the jerks are 'auto renewing' me at $35.

My question is, since i already registered the name with yahoo, shouldn't be able to touch the hostname now, correct?  I'm guessing if they can't register it (cause it's register with yahoo) then they won't be able to complete the transaction and charge me...

9  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Aargh! I can't play Pirates!!! on: December 03, 2004, 03:04:49 AM
To give you a little more info, my DVD drive would not read the game at all.  I returned my first copy, thinking it was blank/corrupt/whatever.

Then I put the second copy in my drive and it couldn't read that DVD either.  Only after being the stubborn fool that I am did I get lucky enough for the drive to finally read it and got the game installed.  I basically ejected the DVD, reseated the DVD, made sure it was clean, and tried again and again.

Unfortunately I got only one game in before the drive starting having trouble again, which is where the no-cd deal comes in.

Perhaps you could borrow a friend's drive, get it installed and use the no-cd or the file linked above...

If it makes you feel any better, the Atari tech suggested that I get a different drive too.

Good luck.
10  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Aargh! I can't play Pirates!!! on: December 02, 2004, 11:06:59 PM
I've had this same problem.  From what I've gathered, it's due to my DVD drive (faster DVD drives not playing well with their copy protection).  Regardless, a no-cd patch is the only way I had been able to play, since their tech support hadn't been able to solve the problem.

Today, I received an email from Atari saying to replace my .exe with this

Of course I'm at work so I haven't tried that yet myself.
11  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / HL2 a second time and with more gravity! **spoilers** on: November 23, 2004, 07:44:05 PM
Here's how to play through the levels again w/the blue gravity gun

Enable the console
type these commands:
sv_cheats 1
map d3_citadel_04
give weapon_physcannon
changelevel d1_town_01 (or where ever you want to start)

I gotta say it's a lotta fun picking up the zomies and holding them into the spinning blades.

I really like the oreilly books.  their html def guide should get you started.

And as annoying as it always is, I would recommend using a plain old text editor (especially for anyone who wants to learn html).  Notepad on windows and BBEdit on the Mac.

Good luck.

Isn't the official website?  I believe the publisher is CDV and they don't even sell it online (that I could find).  If I don't end up finding it, i'll check out your trade list.
16  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Half Life 2 Gold on Monday? on: October 19, 2004, 05:01:32 AM
So if you buy it through steam and your hard drive tanks three months down the road, will they let you download the game again (assuming you have your account info) ?

And/or can you burn it to CD/DVD and unlock it again later?

I sure like the idea of giving more money to the developer-- okay, getting the game as soon as it's released sounds pretty nice too.
17  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Where to buy the Combat Mission Anthology? on: October 19, 2004, 04:42:37 AM
Anyone know where you can get the CM Anthology in the US?

I've tried the usual suspects: gogamer, EB, Gamestop, Amazon, outpost... no luck. doesn't even list it.  I emailed gogamer to ask if they were expecting to get more and never received an answer, unfortunately.

I'm going through turn-based withdrawals... HELP!

I downloaded it, and am totally terrible at it.

I am having a blast though. It's good stuff. I played this morning while Aliens played in the background.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one enjoying it.  It is a pretty tough game.  I think it took me a few tries to make it through the first mission and that was on easy.  For some reason though, this game is fun even when you're getting your ass kicked (at least for me it was).  Once you get the hang of it, I think you'll have even more fun.

The sigma campaign was great all the way through.  Unfortunately the next one isn't as good so far, although I am close to finishing it.

Hopefully they'll add more missions!

THe AI don't do friendly fire.  However, if you switch into controlling a marine while his AI fired bullets/flame are still in the air, and they hit someone, then it'll unfortunately cause them damage.

As quickly as I was switching between my guys, it's entirely possible that I did just that.  It's soooo much easier blaming the AI though.

What's the cigar for?  Does it do anything special or did they just put it in the game for the Predator reference?
20  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Alien Swarm help on: October 16, 2004, 10:37:30 PM
Quote from: "Falator"

Anyway, in the single player campaign, exploit the fact that ai team mates don't do friendly damage. use weapons like flamers and assault shotguns on your ai team mates.

I am playing the single player campaign and my team mates DO do friendly damage.  Just last night Crash (under AI control) torched Wildcat and her ammo pack exploded doing even more damage.

Perhaps the two campaigns have this set differently since I was playing the first and you said you were playing the second campaign...
21  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Alien Swarm help on: October 16, 2004, 09:08:05 PM
Thanks Dalai.

Made it through last night.  I did use Jaeger but left the flamethrowers at home since my guys usually cause more damage than the aliens when I leave the AI to control them.

Now I'm on to the second campaign, which seems pretty tough already.  Looks like the flashlights and flares are gonna get used a lot more this time.  I just wish my team didn't have to start as newbies again...

And those face hugger spawns are just wrong!

I still can't believe no one else is playing this fantastic mod.
22  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Alien Swarm help on: October 14, 2004, 11:15:41 PM
This probably contains spoilers if you haven't played Alien Swarm already.

I'm playing the first single player campaign and I'm having a helluva time with the last mission.  It's the mission where you find the egg nest and have to move through it to complete the mission and then back through to get out.

I'm using the Sarge guy, the two auto-gunners and the 'Crash' tech guy (since the mission makes me bring one).   They all have pretty good stats.  They all have their default guns, an extra ammo pack and one health pack.  Crash has one of the automatic guns.

I've been avoiding any of the areas I can get away with and only fight as much as I have to (trying to conserve ammo) until I get to the egg room.  I can make my way through the egg room without much problem (and shoot all of the eggs i can on the way in), complete the mission but I have yet to make get the fuck outta dodge without either losing more than half my team or running out of ammo.  In fact, I've only made it to the main door once (with one guy and no ammo) and got rushed by what looked like a dozen more aliens.

To get out of the egg room I set up one of the automagic guns in the middle of the room to cover my retreat.  I also drop all of the mines I can near the spawn points.  Then I bring my marines against the south wall (leap frogging on another) as quickly as I can (since the aliens just keep comming) but typically end up getting ripped apart between the aliens coming from the egg room and the ones waiting in the hallway outside.  And usually only one or two of my guys still have ammo at this point.  And yeah, I do 'short controlled bursts' unless there's a friggin mob charging me!

I have found the ammo room to the south of the egg room but I never have enough ammo to make it there alive!

Any tips here?  I do have it on Easy as well...

"What're we supposed to use, man?  Harsh language?"

The whole issue with Locke defies explanation based on what we've seen so far. As mentioned above, how does someone in a wheelchair for 4 years have the musculature left to get up and walk/run off? And he doesn't tell anybody? And he tries to use a bargain-basement wheelchair to go off-roading in the Australian Outback? He'd be lucky to get one of those into an Outback Steakhouse.

Let alone the fact that he came face to face with one of the invisible creatures while hunting the boar and walks away... AND then doesn't say anything about what happened.

IIRC, XM also has an internet feed, but you have to pay extra for it.

Meaning you can stream XM over your internet connection?  You wouldn't happen to have a link to info on this would you (I couldn't find anything on XM's site).

edit: okay, found it

only $3.99 more a month... hmmm  biggrin

34  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Sattelite Radio questions on: October 11, 2004, 05:27:54 AM
We subscribe to XM and love it.  If regular radio drives you nuts because of the commercials and song selections, you should give XM a shot (borrow a friend's for a few days, if you can).  It's about $10 a month, or less if you pay in advance.

We have a dedicated XM device called the Roady that plugs into the car stereo through a tape adapter.

The only downside I've found is that since it's line of sight, your signal will drop every time you drive under an overpass or whatever.  You should keep this in mind if you're planning on listening to it inside the house (since you'll need line of sight from the antenna).

37  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Xbox dirty disc error on: October 08, 2004, 07:00:46 PM
Almost all of my games (I only purchase new games, no renting) load up with an error saying they're dirty.

So, I finally called Microsoft tech support and told them the drive wasn't readying new, clean discs.  They explained the process of how to clean the discs myself (WHO KNEW?!?! ) and when that didn't work, they offered to repair it for me...

For $79.99, not including shipping, etc.  Why don't they just tell you Bill wants you to purchase a new xbox instead of repairing your old one and get it over with!

Has anyone replaced their xbox drive?  And did it solve the dirty disc problem?

38  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Thanks for all the info guys. on: July 29, 2004, 06:17:54 AM
I guess I forgot to look in the items menu when the wanzer store became available.  So the repair kits, ammo packs and all other stuff is (good) news to me.

How is FM3?  I guess it's as good as FM4 or better since it's in such high demand...
39  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Front Mission 4 combat on: July 28, 2004, 08:35:06 PM
Great game.  Anyone else playing this?

All of the pilots seem as though they're geared for a specific wanzer so I have a melee, missiler, sniper and repair guy.  But now that I have a wider selection of wanzers to choose from, I ended up dropping my melee wanzer for a wanzer with a canon.  Unfortunately the pilot isn't very skilled with the gun and the only weapon upgrade skill choices I have had so far are for melee skills.  Do pilots only have access to specific skills or can any pilot gain any skill?  I don't think my melee pilot has had the chance to get one skill that would help for the new wanzer I bought...

Do you have to have a special backpack to call for an ammo drop?  Near the end of a few missions, I have been very very close to having no ammo at all.

Anyone playing without a repair guy?  My battles are usually a 50/50 of shooting and repairing.  I usually park him right behind my wanzer who the enemy is currenly working over and keep repairing him until my other wanzers take out the enemy.  I just can't see this game being playable at all without a repair guy.

Are scouts with sensors worth it?  Every time I try to get my scout close enough to something so my missile wanzer can shoot from a distance, the scout gets his ass kicked.  I've been thinking about dropping him for a gunner or something.

Since there are three different types of armor to choose from, is there any way to know before a mission what armor type you should use?  I have all mine set to piercing since most of the wanzers i've faced are gunners/missilers.

My only gripe with combat so far has to do with the linking.  I have my wanzers set up so they're attack linked.  Then what I do, once everyone is in position, is have my canon wanzer shoot at someone.  Then my sniper, who is linked to the canon wanzer, usually takes a linked shot before the canon wanzer pulls the trigger.  What's annoying is that if the sniper takes the enemy wanzer out, the canon wanzer loses his turn without doing anything.

Also, anyone know if the previous front mission games available anywhere?
