BEAST MODE.

I'm lucky I didn't hurt myself during that run. I could barely believe it. I kept expecting him to hit the sideline or get tackled, but, NO! BEAST MODE STOPS FOR NO ONE. And then Hasselbeck downfield sort of throwing a block?

So fantastic!

Moonlight Mile by Dennis Lehane next.

Kratz: looking forward to seeing your project as well. A little photo advice, though? Check your White Balance on your camera. It'll remove that yellow tinge your photo has. Set it for Incandescent (regular light bulbs) or Florescent (duh) depending on your setting and, poof, no more weird tints.

Of course, if you know this already, then please disregard. smile

I just finished Patient Zero.  Very entertaining book.  It kind of seems like they are building that team motif, similar to the Sigma books.  Looking forward to checking out the next one.

A quick question on the Harry Hole books  ( hard to avoid the juvenile chuckles with that name ).  How do they translate in english?  Ive read some foreign translations that come off somewhat stilted and it really hurts the immersion factor.

They translate FANTASTIC. In fact, some of the prose the translator, Don Bartlett, uses is simply sublime. He has a way with words and if they are word for word translated from, as the books state, "the Norwegian," well Norwegian (if that's what they call the language) is beautiful indeed.

There are words that are uncommonly used in American English, for example, a flashlight is called a torch and he refers to something called a "bedsit", which according to Wikipedia, is a "bed-sitting room" common in England and Europe.

Anyway, if the prose bugged me, I would have noticed as well. However, what I noticed instead was how wonderfully translated the books were.

And, apparently the O in Hole is pronounced like the OO sound in "pool", according to the author. So, it'd be Harry Hoole. Or something.

In other news, I was at the bookstore tonight and saw that another one of my favorite authors, Dennis Lehane, has a new Gennaro/Kenzie book out called Moonlight Mile. SWEET!

Just finished The Snowman by Jo Nesbo. I've said it before and I'll say it again. If you're a mystery/thriller guy, you will LOVE Nesbo's Harry Hole books. Easily my favorite new (to me) character in years.
186  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Seattle, Nov. 22 Storm on: November 26, 2010, 07:05:41 PM
IIRC, you're new to town, right? Anyway, I had a friend who moved here from Boston and he had pretty much the same response. Trouble is, we hardly ever get feet of snow like back east, so, accordingly, our snow preparedness both on a city and individual level is pretty poor. Add in hills, warm ground/freezing temps, drivers who think they have the necessary skills/SUV over-confidence, and you get complete and utter shutdown when it snows here.

Or, you could read this article, which sums it up pretty well:

I've read some RJ as well, and I got a bit tired of it by book 3 or 4. I think I may have simply needed a break.

Again, if no one has read any of the Harry Hole books by Jo Nesbo, give them a try. I like them a lot!

I again have taken you're advice and am about 60 pages into Nesbo's "Red Breast", and it is great so far.  Our tastes must be very similar smile

Thanks for the recommendation.

Eco

SWEET! I am on his latest, The Snowman, and it is incredible. Loving it. The only nitpick I have with Nesbo's books is they get (for me) a little tough to follow as they are so intricate. I think the Devil's Star was the "easiest" to follow and the Redeemer the most difficult. And it looks like he has a new book coming in March! The Leopard.

ARISE SUCKA!

I just realized that today is 2 years to the day that my son had a brain transplant err... surgery. At least I tell him he had a brain transplant. He asks me, "For real?" icon_smile

Anyway, I was reliving what I wrote on his blog and then remembered you fine peeps here and on this thread and wanted to say thanks and all that stuff. These days, Riley is doing great. He's 6 now and in first grade. He just lost his first tooth this week. He's reading like a mo-fo, wants to play video games all the time, can ride a bike w/o training wheels and is a joy to be around most times.

He is still drinking thickened liquids as he aspirates regular liquids. He does suffer from occasional headaches, especially if his activity level is too high. He gets lots of tummy aches and is constipated every once in a while because of the thickened liquids, we think.

For the most part, he's right where he should be progress-wise. The doctor tells us that it took him 4 years to get to where he was (severe chiari) and may take as long for his condition to get better. Thank the good Lord that he's as patient and accepting of the way he is because it would be so rough if he couldn't handle it.

So, for anyone who remembered Rye's surgery, that's an update for you. And here's Riley from a few weeks ago.

Finally finished book 2 in the Harry Hole series, Nemesis. Though if you go to Jo Nesbo's website, I think Nemesis is actually book 4? He has a bunch of books, 5 of which are translated from Norwegian into English.

Anyway, if you're interested, it goes, The Redbreast, Nemesis, The Devil's Star, The Redeemer and The Snowman.

If you're into the detective thing, check out Harry Hole.
