1361  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / TIVO Questions attn: Jeff Jones on: November 08, 2004, 05:00:49 PM
Quote from: "Rage"
That absolutely what you are telling me is that other than the DirectTivo, I cannot get a tv with two different output feeds?
That is much lessimportant to me than the main issue:

Can I get a Tivo that will allow me to record one program and watch live TV at the same time?

Appreciate the help.

I'm a little cornfused by a friend of mine. He just bought a Tivo and is gadget impaired, yet, supposedly, he has set it up so he can do just what Rage asked. I have yet to talk to him so I'm not sure what he did, but once I know, you'll know.
1362  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / How are the Ipods? on: November 08, 2004, 04:58:03 PM
I wrote this a while back at the Home Theater Forum.

Hi guys,

Rio fanboy here. The Rio Karma is AWESOME! I've had one since the end of June and it has been great. I have about 2500 songs or so on it and about 4 gbs left.

Yeah, it ain't no Apple, but it really is great. Here are some reasons why.

1. Gapless playback. One of my main reasons for buying it. I have many live albums, bootlegs, concept, etc, and they ALL play flawlessly w/o gaps. Awesome.

2. Long battery life. One of my other main reasons for buying it. I haven't timed it from start to finish, but one full charge can last me 2-3 weeks (using in the car for 30-45 minutes a day).

3. On the fly playlist creation. What I'll do is set the Karma to do a random play, or songs I haven't heard in XXX days. I'll hear something cool, then think that Song XXX would be great to hear. And I look it up, hit Insert, and voila! Next song up is Song XXX. And after that, the list continues.

4. Ogg Vorbis compatibility. I admit I had no idea what OGG was before buying this unit. It wasn't until I realized that OGG supported gapless and that the Karma supported OGG and gapless that it all came clear. I ripped most everything I have with 192kbs OGG (level 6, I think) using CDex. Does it sound better than .mp3? Don't know. Are there gaps in Operation: Mindcrime? Heck no!

5. Included Sennheiser headphones. They aren't the best, but they beat the crap most manufacturers include.

6. Included dock supports USB 2.0 and ethernet and has RCA out to hook up to home stereo. Oh, yeah, did I mention the dock lights up blue when charging? Or pulses to the music? Or pulses when charging? Talk about sweet. Here's how cool this thing is. My computer is on one side of the room, my home stereo on the other side. I take an RCA cable, plug it to my receiver AUX IN, and set the dock on top. I have an ethernet wire running from my router to the dock. So what's that mean? I can play music from the Rio directly to the stereo. I can rip music to the computer and send it over the wire to my Karma. There's no need to plug and unplug and move things around. Genius!

7. Equalizer settings. There are some presets (Trance, Rock, Classical, etc) but there's also a robust customizable EQ. Very nice.

8. Karma as HDD. There is software called Rio Taxi that allows you to use the Karma as an external HDD. However, I've heard that it isn't very user friendly. YMMV.

So what don't I like about the Karma?

1. Lousy warranty. 90 days. Make sure you buy an extended warranty.

2. Questionable QA/HDD reliability. My first one died in 3 days. The HDD locked up. I did the dreaded Bitch Slap Your Karma fix and it worked for a sec, then failed. That one went back and I got a new one locally. That's worked great for 2 months now (knock wood).

3. Lack of aftermarket goodies. Aside from a few "homebrew" cases and an entrepeneur who has made static cling screen guards, that's about it. Not like the iPod where you can practically brew coffee with it, if you have the right attachment .

4. Moving parts. Yes, the scroll wheel is fragile. But so is an egg. Just be careful.

These are all observations off the top of my head. I've told many people that the Karma is quite possibly the coolest gadget I've ever bought. It's made me rediscover my music collection and I'm thankful for it. I sold my PS2 and many games to fund this thing. It's been worth every penny!

PS: the site that has the 40gb Karma? May be a "custom" job with a voided warranty. There is a guy at Riovolution who opened up a 20gb Karma, dremeled out all the tabs, inserted a 40gb hdd in and modded it. Not sure if the above site is doing the same or if their legit.

PPS: rumor has it that the Karma2 is just around the corner (Fall). Not sure about the specs other than it will have 40gb. Keep your eyes peeled.

Here's one more good Karma site:

I love my Karma!

EST EST always EST!

I work until 6:00pm PST and have to be at a father daughter thing at 7:00pm. After everything and putting the kids down, the soonest I'll be getting my ass kicked at UT would be 9:00pm or later. So, if you need me for the stress test at 6:00pm PST, I'll have to regretably back out frown.

But, in my honor, everyone do a self frag tonight and start at -1. It's on me! smile

Holy crap! He was huge at 30 weeks! My daughter was born at 35 weeks and she was 5lb 12oz and 18". Our hospital was great as well. They basically give me training on how to be a dad. I wasn't ready yet and I used my Bradley Method classes as naptime  . But the positive was that I met my daughter 5 weeks early and didn't have to do anything in the delivery room!

Say goodbye to playing Halo 2 or Half-life 2 anytime soon... slywink
1368  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Do I need to finish Halo before buying Halo 2? on: November 03, 2004, 05:55:24 AM
I played for an hour last night and enjoyed myself. I'm at the 3rd big section at the beginning, the Truth and Reconciliation part. I'm slow (kids, man!), and enjoying myself.

I think I'll make my way through Halo, buy HL2, then pick up Halo2 down the road.

I'm curious why you'd be interested in Halo 2 if you are having a hard time continuing with Halo (especially when you are still fairly early in the game)?

Because I'm a sucker for the CG Forum Effect frown. My Xbox is only a few months old and I'm stocking up, I guess. Throw in a 10 week old, and a wife who's hooked on Tivo-ing ALL the Quantum Leaps it can manage, and I'm fairly limited in my time on the Xbox.

I want to be with my Xbox, but Real Life interferes a bit too much...

I'm borrowing a friend's Halo and just got the warthog. I don't know if I have it in me to finish the game. Besides missing out on a fun time, do I need to finish it before getting H2? I have a few bux laying around and am thinking of getting a prepurchase on it.

As a Huge Rush Fan, I scratch my head at your inclusion of HYF. Even the guys in Rush can't seem to stand it (according to their "official", recently released bio). However, to each his own, right?

I'm very fond of the following albums:

Muse - Absolution
Aimee Mann - Lost in Space
Juliana Hatfield - In Exile Deo
Rush - Signals, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, A Farewell to Kings, Grace Under Pressure, among others
The Donnas - Spend the Night
Matthew Sweet - 100% Fun

And I'm having a hard time coming up with more off the top of my head. Goodbye.

Edit to add: Weezer - Blue Album (thanks Sepiche!)

Anyone read Bill Harris' take on it? Good stuff. Here it is if you're a lazy bastard.

I love what he wrote about A-Rod:

Here's the part I like the most. Rodriguez, instead of shrugging his shoulders and accepting that his slap-fight impersonation had been detected, acted like he had just been sentenced to Death Row for a crime he hadn't committed. I can't wait to see his next public service announcement: "Hello, I'm Alex Rodriguez, I make twenty million dollars a year playing baseball, and I act like a little bitch."

Mytocles is a stand-up trader. She took a bunch of stuff off my hands and was very fair about it. I had given her a +1 at GG before the crash and was going to do a +2 because we had 2 transactions.

Anyway, highly recommended!!!

With Tabbrowser Extensions I'm so used to using the middle mouse button to close tabs now that I don't see the point of adding Tab X.  Also the middle mouse button on an empty spot of the tab bar brings up the last tab closed (and so on up to three times).  I'd imagine Tab X doesn't have a quick way to re-open recently closed tabs.

Thanks for this! I didn't know MMB would close the tab. You r0x0rs, T$c0Tt!

Here's another question. I just installed the Tab Extensions and am trying to figure it out.

When I loaded tabs before, the tabs would load in the background. Now, each tab I load loads, but I'm bounced to the newly opened tab. For example, if I want to open 3 links on the CG forum index, it takes me directly to the new tab. Then I have to go back to open the other 2 links. Big pain.

Also, the Tab X extension appears to be disabled with the Tab Extensions extension. Too bad.

EDIT to add: nevermind, just figured out the first half. Now if someone can figure out the Tab X.

Adblock is one of my favorites.  It allows me to specify some wildcard expressions that commonly identify imported advertisement elements in a page (e.g. */ads/* or *adserver*), and simply strip them all out of the page.  It also allows you to view a list of the URLs of all blockable components of any given page, so that you can quickly block and unblock them, or more quickly identify the common URL substrings that you want to block.

Makes it sound like a lot of work, but with only a dozen or so such expressions I hardly see any ads at all on my web pages anymore.  Dramatically speeds up the loading time of ad-heavy sites, and reduces the clutter of my browsing experience.

Do you actually type *adserver* in the box and they're all gone? I have t manually block each ad. I did do just an "*" once and it took everything, including smileys, etc. How do I get the ads to go away?

Uhh. Don't take her to a Chinese restaurant.

If her English is limited, if and when you meet her parents, don't expect a lot of conversation.

Then again, I've never dated a Chinese woman. I'm giving it from my pov being a Chinese Man of Mystery.

Sneakerman =

I read the "raise pigs" thing twice. Am I the only one that thinks that NOT thinking of raising pigs is not a crazy idea? Who the hell is gonna think, "Hmm. Perhaps we should raise some pigs on this beach to keep us alive"?

I like this show, but there are so many moments of, "c'mon now", that it makes me wacky with anger.

If I was stuck with my pre-teen son and had to go hunt boar, the last person I'd choose to watch him would be someone who I COULDN'T COMMUNICATE with. I wouldn't care if she gave me a free show or not. I'd grab Hurley or Dr. Charlie to watch him.

You know what I mean??

Girls, in my experience, are less rowdy and more social than boys.  But they also seem to become "independant" faster (as in "I want to play by myself, leave me alone daddy").

So, to sum up, congratulations.  It's a scary step, having kids, but one that you will not regret.

Yow. You need to come to my house. My daughter is insane. 2.5 years and a nut job already. slywink of course. I call her Crazy Hazy.

Congrats to malchi123493219 on the baby. When they whipped Haley out via c-section, I thought she was a boy (we didn't find out). Turns out her privates were not only purple, but quite swollen, giving the look of being hung.

Some bonuses of having a girl (I have a boy now, too, and figure I can be an authority on the subject):

1. NO CIRCUMCISION DECISION. I thought I'd be cool, calm and collected when the time came to make the C.D. with Riley. With a girl, it's come as you are.

2. Diaper changes are easy. My friend who had a boy said boy's diapers were easier. I call bull. Wiping the remnants of breast milk poo poo away from a boy's sack is one of the most difficult things I've done in a long time. With a girl, you just need to clean out all the folds. Remember: front to back!

3. When the women tell you how cute your baby is, you feel special. After all, she is half yours, no matter how ugly you may be. slywink

4. You get a Daddy's Girl. Selfish as it may sound, I LOVE it when Haley comes to me instead of Mommy. Mommy gets her all day; I get her 2 hours a night. That's my time.

Some bad things about having a girl:

1. Boys.

2. Being surrounded by Dora the Explorer and Princess stuff all the time.

3. Wait til she turns 6-8 or so. I 've seen stores like Limited Too where they want your daughters to dress like hos. Freaks me out.

4. Not much else.

Kids are cool. Congrats to you and keep us posted.

Super Drag and Go - This is the one you highlight and drag to get a new tab with a google search of the text.  I couldn't live without it now.

Tabbrowser Extensions - This is the best extension for tabbed browsing IMO.

Spellbound - Spell checker, very useful

Download them all! - very useful if you want everything of certain file types that's linked on a page.
See: Pornzilla (link safe for work except for name)

Allow Right Click - lets you right click on pictures, etc. on sites that don't allow right clicking

Bug Me Not - useful for when some links news articles for sites that require registration and you don't want to give out your email

IE View - for those occasional times when what you want to see doesn't work right in Firefox.

(BTW, all the links in this post were quickly and easily found using Super Drag and Go.  Did I mention I couldn't live without it yet?)

Uh, someone needs TinyURL creator... (too lazy to look up the link)

That was fun as always. Gwon, I'm done for the night but we talked about playing some more this weekend. You have to get yourself a headset!

Do you guys use the MS headset? Or a 3rd party one? How does it work? Does the MS headset plug into the controller? Do you have a ton of cables running around?

I wish I had one for last night. I could hear your voices, but just barely, through the tv. With a headset, it plays into your ear, right?

I saw a headset from Logitech, but the price ($79.99!) means I gotta sell some stuff on ebay first..

Also, I'm on the 2 month trial for Live. With the new baby, I might have to wait a bit after the trial expires. No sense in starting a 12 month plan and not be able to use it that much.
