Not sure if you found it but for the missile to remain locked you keep the key pressed which apparently isn't clear

I am still at the maybe buy point, the steam forum seemed quite negative frown
My take so far is the game wants to be something like all of those favorite space combat games, but it just doesn't quite come together or feel as polished. Certainly it's an indy game, but it just seems off. Even F2P Black Prophecy, for me, plays better in terms of the basic maneuvering and space combat.

For me the default keyboard controls in SOL just didn't make much sense, and no amount of reconfiguring quite seemed to get me comfortable with it. Gamepad steering felt backwards (push left to go... right? Maybe that's how a flight stick works?), and I didn't see any option to invert that.

I bought this when it first came out and didn't really like it.  But the developers have been pretty active in updating the game.  They've even been changing the actual missions themselves to make them more fun...and I think it is a much better game than what was released originally.

It is definitely not the next freespace, but a really cool arcade space shooter.  I wish they had more ship varieties

I'm using a xbox360 controller and don't have any issues with the steering.

I've got

- a copy of Drakensang
- a copy of L4D
- 50% off Metro 2033 coupon
- 50% off 123 Kickit
- valve coupons (33%,25%)

I don't mind giving away most of it free, but I would like to trade Drakensang for something

87  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Razer Onza issues on: November 22, 2011, 11:30:44 PM
I had one of these for a few months and the right analog stick started to randomly drift the camera down which annoyed the hell out of me.  This was also a problem some people had.

I caved and bought an official wired xbox360 controller.  I find the build quality of the official controller is WAY better than the razer, even though it's only about 10 bucks more.

I'm getting more comfy with a PS style controller (Renegade Ops, LOTR: War in the North), so I'd be curious how this plays on PC with a controller. I never quite got comfortable using keys for combos in the Arkham Asylum game.

I played the first one using both (xbox360 controller) and I preferred having a mouse for camera control when in combat because it was quicker to swing it around to find the next enemy.  But this really wasn't an issue.

The new one has a lot of more quick keys to access for your gadgets during combat, so the controller is the way to go I think
89  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Batman: Arkham City on: November 22, 2011, 07:58:03 PM
Played for about 30 mins (after downloading this for 12 hours) and it runs fine so far at 1080p on a Q6600 with 4850.  I turned off AA but everything is very high.  There's some slowdown when batman enters a building, but haven't really noticed anything beyond that.

BTW, for those who don't know, there's Steam, Securom and GFWL DRM just like the first one.

And is it me or is the combat a little bit slower paced than the first one.  There's just a little bit more time to decide who to hit next.

ok, there's a benchmark tool in the game, and I'm getting about 50 fps average, with a low of 16 fps

Yeah, not really a big deal for me.

From the leaked screen shot of the option menu, it just looks like they added an option to automate dialog choice, and the 'action', 'story' and 'RPG' monikers are just pre-set settings for the dialog and combat options.

The Dead Space pack dropped in price from about $16 to $13.50 if that makes a difference for anything.  It looks like it's only applicable if you are in North America though.

Tempted by Space Pirates and Zombies, may have to take a bit more time on the demo to decide.

I almost picked this up at Target (the price is falling, and this includes a printed guide book and a separate DVD of some behind the scenes videos etc.). I'd read in the Steam forums there was much anguish about trying to update the Steam version and most there recommended either the DRM-free version from GoG, or the retail box release. I wanted to make sure (given my motion sicky issues) it was 3rd person, which it is.

I think the mega-box I saw seemed to include all the DLC today and the relatively latested updates (including the new tutorials).

Although the reviews were generally positive I see a lot of divergent opinions in various forums. I'm inclined to give it a whirl, and then I'll post some pleas for help here if I get stuck.  icon_smile

I might avoid the steam version for a while if you are on a monthly bandwidth plan.  There were issues in the beginning where a new patch meant you downloaded the entire game (9 gb) again.  They fixed that so that it only downloads a patch update that does the patching when you run it.  But they just switched the game over to a new content delivery format that forced a full re-download of the game again.  They (valve) promise that it is the last time.  Roll Eyes

I would say get the steam version only when they have an awesome sale on it.

For some reason I haven't been pulled into the game as much as I did the first one.  The furthest I've gotten is a few hours into chapter 1.  The graphics and presentations are definitely much better, but I'm really uninterested in what I'm doing.  Maybe it's all the ploughing language icon_wink

96  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: anyone crossfire / sli? on: October 18, 2011, 07:10:30 PM
Yeah, I've been debating whether it's worth it or not, or just buy a new card.  I want to be able to keep my current PC for another year or two before getting a new one.

Most games play fine on 1600x900, but some of the newer ones I have to turn down the options for in 1900x1080.

It's not an urgent upgrade, so I'll wait and see what new cards they come out with and maybe there'll be a price drop on the current ones.

99  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Wahammer 40K: Space Marine on: August 24, 2011, 03:39:52 AM
one complaint - there's no option to invert x-axis for the camera on the controller.  Makes aiming really tough for me.  Would really like to go controller, but might have to revert to kb/m.

But still, loved the demo.
100  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Assassin's Creed Brotherhood PC (mouse/keyboard) on: July 25, 2011, 06:36:35 PM
I bought this during the steam summer sale and I'm having a lot of fun with the games.

I would say that keyboard/mouse is serviceable, but found it works way better with a controller.

As a game overall this is a way better improvement over the first one, but there are some minor annoyances, like the free running can be a pain sometimes.  I'm finishing ACII and definitely looking forward to starting ACB.

Didn't have any problems with my old save either.  As an aside, the auto update patch thing has been a hit or miss for me.

And I believe the save games for new vegas are on steam cloud too?  But I don't know if you can redownload save games on the cloud.

I'm leaning towards picking up a cheaper bike (with a nice frame) and upgrading some components as need be.  Plus I have to consider the cost to buy accessories too.

Thanks guys for your input.
103  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / looking for a new touring/commuter bike on: May 17, 2011, 04:51:46 PM
Hey Guys:

I'm looking to pick up a new commuter/touring bike and need some advice.  I've narrowed my choices down to three

Brodie Romulus $800
Fuji Touring $1200
Rocky Mountain Sherpa 30 $1500

Anyone had experience with these bikes?  My budget is around $1000-$1200, so the Sherpa may be a little bit out of reach.  Or are there any other bikes out there?

I would need the bike for:

General commuting and groceries (this will be my main mode of transportation 3 seasons out of four (no winter)).
Light touring:  Overnight tours
General riding:  80 kms a week (road and paved/gravel trails)
Something that will last 5+ years

thanks a lot

It's not as fun as LotSB, but I thought it's about the same as Overlord, but a lot shorter (took me about 1 hr on Normal, I'm replaying it again on my Hard level Adept and it's taking me a little bit longer.)

I'll agree with the Joystiq review in that you're getting the DLC mainly for the story, but I enjoyed the overall mission.  Some of the fights were fun because you're on your own and you have to figure out how to deal with that and there are some variety.

I get the feeling that they made this a solo mission because Bioware/EA didn't want to pay the voice actors again.

However, it is a pretty straightforward go from A to B to C mission with very little choice in between.

I do wish that (the very end of the DLC)
Spoiler for Hiden:
That I could decide to destroy the relay or not

Some places you can only access at night.  I'm not sure if the Pub is one of them, but there should be a set of icons on the bottom right to switch to day, night and outskirts

Just finished the demo on the PC. No big surprises, but some of my thoughts are below:

Fireballs are still useless against moving enemies, despite Bioware's promise that they had changed this part of the magic system. By the time the fireball reaches the target, the enemy has run way past it. [/li][/list]

This reminds me of the following quote from futurama - "Instead of shooting where I was, you should have shot where I was going to be."   slywink

For the time being this works for fireballs and whatever projectile based attack in the game.

Are there any spoliers in the demo?  I have not finished DA1 yet.

It only seems to spoil the Ostagar section of the first game.

I suppose it may reveal something about Flemeth if you haven't gotten to that point yet.....

I don't really miss the overhead view.  I played it that way exclusively the first time around in DA:O, but I'm playing it again zoomed in all the way and it works just as well.

The character animations are definitely a lot better, but hopefully the terrain gets better as the game progresses.

The not attacking after a skill/spell thing.  I noticed that too, but then I noticed that for some of my characters in DA:O if the tactics weren't set up to tell it to attack an enemy or to attack the closest enemy?

overall, it's pre-ordered and it'll stay that way.

You can sign up for an account and try it for free on the PC now.  There's a few games older games that you can try out for free (prince of persia, titan's quest, etc).  Overall, it is pretty cool and is definitely worth a look.

My internet connection is not fast enough and things look a little grainy and there is some noticeable lag.  It is cool to see the tech at work.

I don't think it's been too bad.  Part of the issue is that between last year's holiday sale, the summer sale, and weekend deals, I've already picked up pretty much everything I want on Steam.  They'll surprise me with some ridiculous deal every now and again, but with 79 games in my library, there's not a ton of stuff I'm really holding out for anymore.

+1

I'm at a point where I've purchased most of the games I'm interested in on Steam through the different sales.  I mean, how many times can they put their entire catalog on sale before everyone buys what they want.

But, the sales have given me a chance to pick up on same really cool indie games that I would have skipped otherwise.

115  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Great Steam Experiment! on: November 22, 2010, 09:51:42 PM
I only use steam to play my games and I don't use any of the online features.  So, if you are looking to go that route, some suggested settings in steam:

1)  verify your steam account, in case you ever fall for a phising attempt
2)  unclick the automatically log you into friends under Friends tab
3)  set favourite window to 'library', unclick 'Notify Me' and run steam automatically under Interface tab
4)  unclick enable steam community in game under In-game tab

you can also set steam cloud (ie to save to cloud or not) for individual games which have that feature

And most problems I've had with Steam went away after a reboot or trying to run it again.

man, those deathclaws and giant rad scorpions are tough.  The damage threshold thing is killer

I'm starting to get crashes after about 10 hours of play.  It gets extremely choppy too when there's a lot of monsters on the screen.

Does anyone else have the Mysterious Stranger Perk?  I'm finding him annoying because whenever he shows up it stays in VATS mode way after he's done his thing and I can't move while my face is being chewed off by all the other monsters.  Hopefully there's a way to fix that.

that aside, I'm enjoying the game, but it's not spectacular.

man, this is definitely an extremely fun and explosion filled arcade racer.

Minor quips - no options for video/control settings, maybe it's just a demo thing.  But the controls are minimal anyways, directional keys to steer, two keys for the different attacks and stuff to change camera and viewpoints.  The graphics were fine for whatever it was set to.

Anyone know how Blur is supposed to different?  They seem to be REALLY similar and will coming out next week.  I only really want to pick up just one arcade racer.

Too bad this isn't on Steam/Impulse; otherwise I would probably buy this right away.
