361  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / new patch for chaos theory - adds shader 2.0 on: August 19, 2005, 03:08:12 AM
I haven't played the game for a while, so, I might've been seeing things.  I thought things were a little bit more shinier than before though...but then everything is so dark that it's hard to tell in the first place anyways.

yeah, still great game....at least this will be an excuse to run through the game again to see if things are different.... biggrin
362  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / new patch for chaos theory - adds shader 2.0 on: August 18, 2005, 03:50:00 PM
this came out a few wks ago, so maybe everyone knows....but it adds shader 2.0 support for ati cards, which makes things look different.

and I also noticed something interesting, under the audio options in the game, there's a checkbox for native languages.  Instead of the NPC's conversations being in English, you hear them saying it in their native language for whatever country you're in.  Although there's no option for english subtitles, I think that's really cool.
363  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Ways to end Piracy on: August 18, 2005, 04:52:58 AM
oh wow, so I guess the way to crack down on piracy is to.....bring back the old game systems?

I've got nothing constructive to add....
364  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I am a sucker for average to just above average games on: August 18, 2005, 04:44:39 AM
so I'm assuming this is the semi-official geist impressions thread...so I'll post mine here...

rented this and played a few hours.  good game with a lot of rough edges.  the possession stuff is really cool and fun, figuring out how to get to the next area is what makes the game.

I love when you possess a creature...if you ever wonder what it's like for a rat to move through a small crawlspace, this game is for you.

graphics range from ok to really good so far, sounds arep[retty good.  AI is terrible, but I'm thinking they did that to make up for the clumsy controls.

boss fights are pretty unique so far, but I really wish they put less emphasis on the shooting aspects or even get rid of it, and have it so you use your possession abilities to clear a room (maybe something where you scare the people so they start shooting each other)

anyone else care to chime in?
365  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Man, Beyond Good & Evil really is fantastic! on: August 18, 2005, 04:28:25 AM
wasn't there something about plans to have 2 sequels?  the ending looked like it was setting up for it.

the game was amazing all the way through, I loved the rooftop chase scenes, pure fun...

I tried to pick this up for another playthrough, but just couldn't get into it again, dunno why...
366  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox 360 Pre-Release Thread on: August 18, 2005, 04:20:35 AM
anyone else see the 2 bundles scheme as a genius cash grab move by microsoft?

sure, for those who will be buying this for ourselves, you'll pick up the 399 package with more goodies, but what about everyone else?

let's say you asked for this as a bday / xmas gift, and one of your relatives, who don't know the first thing about video games, goes shopping for an xbox 360.  are they going to spend 299 or 399 for a GIFT?  of course they are gonna buy the cheaper bundle.

so now you are burdened with the need to purchase a HD, memory card, etc, which means more money for microsoft
367  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Ways to end Piracy on: August 16, 2005, 02:50:38 PM
gamecube games are hard to copy because they aren't the normal dvd/cd (duh), and the technology isn't readily available (and isn't it proprietary?) for anyone to really invest in it.  besides, gamecube isn't that popular enough to warrant anyone to bother anyways biggrin

I don't think you can really end piracy, because it's easy to do, it's free, and people have this who am I harming attitude.

but two possible ways of reducing the amount of piracy that I can see are either by implementing anti-piracy software or crazy activation policies, or offer free goodies to people who actually buy the game.
368  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Zelda delayed :( on: August 16, 2005, 02:35:34 PM
that sucks....but did they ever say when it was being released in the first place?

hopefully the new content won't be hunting for the eight maps to hunt for the eight triforce pieces again....

at least the new screenshots look amazing....love the ones of the town/marketplace....
369  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Tipping? on: August 15, 2005, 09:25:59 PM
I usually give about 10-20% tips.  I thought 15% was the standard?  Did this change and no one told me?  Damn, that's why I'm getting the evil eye everytime I go back to this one restaurant...

But here's a question, do you have to tip when getting take-out?  If you pay with your debit card, it asks you how much to pay for tips, I usually put in zero, but this one time the guy gave me a look.
370  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Half Life 2 on: August 15, 2005, 09:19:51 PM
I just did a reinstall of my system and I get to look forward to reinstalling half-life 2 again (I'm on dial up too)....yah!!!!

if the game wasn't damn good, I wouldn't bother with the whole thing again...
371  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I am a sucker for average to just above average games on: August 15, 2005, 09:16:39 PM
If there is a sale on a new release game, then I'd go check out the reviews / forums/ etc to see what everyone says about it before I decide to pick it up right away.

otherwise, I prefer to rent it first to see if I like it, then wait for a price drop before picking it up.

I'll definitely give Geist a try, but I don't know how n-space can top mary kate and ashley's sweet sixteen driving (or whatever it's called)  biggrin .
372  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Constantine on: August 08, 2005, 11:28:31 PM
saw this a few weeks ago, and it was certainly enjoyable.  not having read the comics it was a little bit harder to follow some of the plot points.

But I thought the ending sequence was very good.  and it was refreshing that they didn't take the good guy wins and gets everything route with the ending.

a good actiony flick if you don't care bout what the story's about
373  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Can you outgrow nightmares? on: August 08, 2005, 11:16:53 PM
Do you guys have one recurring nightmare for a while and then all of a sudden it changes to a different one?

I remember as a kid I always had this one nightmare, and then over the years, that nightmare changed from one to the other.
374  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / New Bond Girl! on: August 08, 2005, 04:55:40 AM
I doubt she's been cast in the game because of her *acting* abilities. (not that I'm complaining)

but will she be the only Bond girl in the game?  Didn't EA have at least 2 or 3 of them in everything or nothing??
375  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Viewtiful Joe question on: August 08, 2005, 04:40:41 AM
wow....good deal

when you run out of lives, you will have the option of starting that level again from the beginning.  If you lose all the lives fighting a boss, I *THINK* you get to restart at the boss fight (can't remember exactly)

the good thing is that you get to keep all the viewtiful points you've collected up to that point, and you're given 3 lives again.

so it's not a big deal dying a few times
376  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / F.E.A.R. SP Demo out on: August 06, 2005, 11:49:26 PM
great game, had me shouting out too, and shooting at something that wasn't there

love the slow mode option, graphics are more towards the doom3 / riddick style...plasticky

i think they've done a better job with the mood and atmosphere than doom3

but it's giving my computer a beating, i think i'm on the lower end of the graphics settings.
377  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / fahrenheit - anyone tried the demo? on: August 03, 2005, 02:48:09 AM
I think that guy who talks to you in the beginning is the writer?

the game is definitely cool and I really do hope that the story and gameplay holds up throughout.

The one thing that might kill the game is if one of your actions causes the game to end down the road.
378  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Any interest in Killer 7? on: August 03, 2005, 02:41:26 AM
if i remember correctly, Cloudman is still on disc 1?  The end of disc 1 anyways, the next mission after that is the longest to me anyways, but afterwards, it goes by pretty quick.  There are 7 missions in total
379  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Hell's Kitchen Finale on: August 03, 2005, 02:38:17 AM
I loved how Michael tried to sabotage Ralph by forgetting to put in the main ingredient in a dish, and Ralph still let the dish through w/o making sure.

I watched kitchen nightmares too when it was on the food channel, and I still remember this one episode where Ramsey didn't think too highly of this one  guy who was the 'executive' chef.  When I saw that one of the contestant on Hell's Kitchen was also an executive chef, I thought he wouldn't make it very far.
380  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Hell's Kitchen Finale on: August 02, 2005, 04:00:31 PM
I loved the show too....damn them for cutting to commercials a split second before he announced the winner to anything

I liked Elsie (sp?), she wasn't a professional cook but beat them out on the contests and got to be on tv.....that burned everyone else so bad.....but then she couldnt cut it on dinner service....

Ralph and Michael deserved to be in the final two, they were carrying their teams throughout the whole season.....Ramsey made the right choice I think...

I didn't quite get the ending though, was there always a choice given to the winner?
381  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / fahrenheit - anyone tried the demo? on: August 02, 2005, 03:07:05 AM
has anyone else tried the demo for this game?

there's already a thread about it over at OO

http://www.octopusoverlords.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=15663

i'll echo what's been said over there.  the game seems cool enough, but the demo was just too short for me to really see what consequences my actions will have.  that whole aspect seems very superficial to me at this point.

the camera is a little bit awkward on the pc, it would be perfect if the camera locked behind the character as he moved

but the atmosphere and the mood is really cool, hopefully it'll get good reviews once it comes out

you can d/l the demo over at gamespot

382  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo's profits down 78.5% on: July 29, 2005, 04:00:20 PM
anyone else see that little bit where they are still expected to maintain a profit over microsoft and sony once the next gen consoles come out??

nintendo definitely screwed the pooch with the gamecube and all the moves they've made recently, but a reduction in profits/console sales is expected, there are now two other competitors in the field.

at least the lack of games keeps my bank account happy
383  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Miyamoto on the Revolution on: July 27, 2005, 02:53:34 AM
yeah, i have trouble with the x and y buttons on the cube controller too sometimes, and having not enough buttons makes some games too awkward to control, and the c stick really doesn't cut it

but i like all the buttons being different shapes and sizes and their placement, easier to figure out which button is what, i think it's easier to pick up for new console gamers

i always have problems with the xbox/ps2 controllers

i still prefer the keyboard/mouse combo over any other controller though
384  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Damn You Rockstar Games.... on: July 25, 2005, 02:14:44 PM
was at the best buy on the weekend, and actually noticed a sales rep explaining to a parent what the ratings on the box meant.  i think she wanted to pick up battlefield 2 for her well under 13 yr old kids.  she decided not to.

if it makes some parents become aware of the content in games and be just a little bit more involved with their kids and their videogames, then i guess there's some good to be had out of all of this
385  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Any interest in Killer 7? on: July 25, 2005, 01:59:08 PM
i've gotten the counter to work a few times...you really need to have very good timing....just before an enemy attacks you, you should see this white lightning bolt flash on the screen....i've found that if you press the counter button just before that flash, it'll work sometimes....
386  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Any good Canadian through-the-mail rental companies/sites? on: July 23, 2005, 03:45:01 PM
i've never tried it, but you can check out

www.iogc.net

it seems to fit what you're looking for, but haven't really heard anything good or bad 'bout them
387  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / New Serenity trailer! on: July 22, 2005, 02:14:37 PM
the new trailer looks awesome....

well, i'm more excited about seeing these characters again rather than the actual story of the movie.  no doubt that it'll be a good movie compared with some of the recent sci fi offerings.
388  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Damn You Rockstar Games.... on: July 22, 2005, 04:53:46 AM
I doubt whatever the motives of rockstar were, they didn't expect this issue to blow over and play out the way it is now.

sure, they either wanted to include simulated sex in the game as a feature, but for whatever reason, decided against it.  knowing the content though, they should have had removed it completely, instead of having someone discover it.

I think though, if another less well known game was found to have an unfinished hidden sex game in it, we wouldn't be hearing as big of a fuss about this.

so, in the end, blame the politicians for trying to make this their personal crusade in order to win over votes

bring up the clip of Rev Lovejoy's wife shouting "Would someone think of the children!!!!"
389  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Resident Evil 4 Impressions on: July 20, 2005, 02:33:36 AM
mercenaries is crazy hard, i've unlocked all the characters, but i've only one five star rating.  And you need to get 20? in order to unlock the infinite something or other....
390  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Any interest in Killer 7? on: July 20, 2005, 02:27:01 AM
hmm....can't seem to find/too lazy to go through all of the pages again to find the link for the mp3....

i'll upload it to my web account at school....

if anyone is interested in it, PM me and I'll send you the link...
391  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Any interest in Killer 7? on: July 19, 2005, 02:27:54 AM
somewhere in the penny arcade forums is a link to a mp3 of the gatekeeper theme....definitely catchy....i'll try to hunt it down when i get the chance.

the gameplay is certainly there, just not current with any other game, but enough to keep you wanting to go through the story.  And it definitely becomes minimal in the last few missions where everything starts to really go weird.

i haven't had the chance to read through any of the other threads bout the story, 40 pages, that's another game in itself...i'll put the ending in that part of my brain where i've stored MGS's ending.

but having played killer7, i found it hard to swtich back to something like re4.  Why doesn't LEon move when I press A????
392  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Battlestar Galactica - 2nd Season on: July 16, 2005, 09:02:04 PM
anyone know when they'll be showing the new episodes up here in canada?

space was airing the first season, but i can't find anything about when they'll have the second season on.  I'm guessing it'll be after charlie jade finishes since it's taken over that timeslot.

damn it.... frown
393  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Any interest in Killer 7? on: July 15, 2005, 02:13:39 AM
oh yeah...i meant the ms hell-on-wheels parking lot boss....her intro sequence was really funny....to me anyways...
394  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Any interest in Killer 7? on: July 14, 2005, 04:19:51 PM
you can upgrade a character up to level 5....

as for the cheesy aspect....yeah....i guess some of the stuff could be considered that.....have you gotten to the boss for encounter (if i remember right)?.....that had me laughing out loud....

the boss battles are definitely very cool, varied and way different from everything else i've played.
395  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / recommend some party games for the 'cube on: July 13, 2005, 05:20:21 PM
thanks for all the suggestion....

oh yeah....SSBM....tried it once before, really didn't know what was going on, but fun in multiplayer.

beach spikers....too bad i can't find a copy that isn't overly priced....definitely needs 4 players...

i'll see what games they have at the video store and decide.
396  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / [Movie] Stealth on: July 13, 2005, 03:11:53 PM
the first half of the trailer looked good until they decided to put the AI plane in there and have it go mad after being struck by lightning and turn against the hunams.

only if my computer could do that.....
397  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dream Stripper **NSFW** on: July 13, 2005, 03:07:43 PM
couldn't you reward your creature in B&W by, ummm, stroking it??

i'm certainly making a really nice first impression with everyone...
398  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dream Stripper **NSFW** on: July 13, 2005, 03:02:11 AM
camera control isnt the greatest.....but i liked that oil her up option  smile

i don't know if it's in the final game or not, but a 'game' of this type screams out for a create your own stripper(erotic dancer) option, like in those wrestling games....imagine the possibilities.....
399  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Any interest in Killer 7? on: July 13, 2005, 02:47:03 AM
just finished up the game, and all i can say is......

im still trying to wrap my head around the whole story, and it ain't working.  i had theories of what was going on as i worked through the game, and the game completely threw those out the window.

but...yeah....definitely worth the headache i have right now....lots of really funny moments intertwined with some freaky what the hell is going on stuff thrown in...that PA entry bout the game is a pretty accurate description

oh, for the shooter parts, when you fully upgrade a character, you are powerful enough to kick to snot out of everything, and you get a lock on special that locks on to an enemie's weakpoint, makes the later levels really easy.
400  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / recommend some party games for the 'cube on: July 13, 2005, 02:29:16 AM
we are going to be holding a gaming night at school in a week or so, and i've volunteered to bring in my gamecube.  most of the games i own are either single or two player games, and so i'll be renting party games.

the choices i'm thinking so far are mario kart, mario tennis, and warioware, since the controls and game mechanics are simple to pick up.

any other games anyone can suggest that might be fun?

the target audience is going to be beginner to advanced gamers, who don't have any experience with a gamecube.

thanks a lot!!
