Exactly the opposite for me, loved the nemesis system.  Every single captain I ran into was unique and memorable in some way, never saw any that were duplicates of or even close to any others.  Different experiences I guess.  Also played quite a bit of the first two batman games, so combat came pretty easy for me too.

Until I got to hour 27 or so, they were all pretty unique for me too.  After that I started to see some repeat names and voices, etc.

This damn game scares me too much to play for more than like 10 mins.

Yeah, I just decided to get in one last session before bed... figured I'd play 15-20 minutes, and managed about that. The thing that really gets me (since I'm playing first-time on the Rift) is just how present they try to make you in the world - little touches like your head bumping those lights hanging in vents. Apparently if you're in a locker hiding, and you move your head into it while peeking, you can bump it and attract unwelcome attention, which is an almost unwelcome attention to detail.

Spoiler for Hiden:
I started just a few minutes shy of meeting Axel for the first time, and played until the sequence when he departed. I don't honestly know if the Alien was around while I was waiting for the transit tram, but as soon as I hit the button and the music changed, I picked about the worst hiding spot (crouching at the crate right by the tram), and only realized how awful it was when I was seeing how much light there was in that one spot. I don't honestly know if the Alien is actually hunting you during that scene, or if it's just dramatic scene-setting... but my heart rate was up higher than it's been in a long time. I was just crouching there, watching the flickering lights and moving smoke/fog, peeking and peeking as much as I dared (and the Rift setting doesn't seem to let you do that with the controller - if you want to peek around the corner, you're doing it by moving your head. I honestly cannot remember a more legitimately fearful moment I've had in gaming. Frankly, the farther I get, the more terrified I get of my first inevitable death - I honestly don't know if I'll be able to keep playing in VR if it's going to stay like that. I'm sort of hoping that dying a few times gets me somewhat used to it, instead of making me 'nope' out so hard I go back to the monitor.

Weirdly, during that segment I just kept wondering if I was supposed to be scared.  I don't mean in the puff-up-my-chest manly way, but honestly, I wasn't sure.  I didn't see anything that indicated something scary was supposed to be happening.

Of course, one of my constant problems in gaming is that I'm forever looking for collectibles, and so I'm frequently looking the wrong way when something I'm supposed to notice happens.  I'll hear a music sting while I'm looking at some boxes and whip the right stick around saying, "What did I miss??"

I thought that moment was specifically designed to scare the crap out of you and keep you peeking over cover to see if anything was coming.

I've noticed that if you pull of the tracker the music seems to go crazy too?  Or maybe just when a blip appears?  My nerves can't hang with it.

I got the puzzle ring too, but I didn't think it looked very good.  Is it supposed to be special?

You can get a gun, but they did a good job of making ammo realistically scarce. As in you find maybe 1 extra bullet over hours of play. You can use the gun to bypass lesser enemies, yes sometimes they shoot back, but it's refreshing to see it's not rapid fire guns everywhere, and you always have less bullets that needed to clear an area.

Yes, I read as much in the previews.  The idea is to bide your time and head for an opening.  I played the beginning hour with headphones on and at night and they did a great job of creating a very freaky atmosphere.  I'm both looking forward to/dreading getting back to the ship to search around.  It sounds like the game is very long and I hope I don't burn out from stress before too long since I'm already creeped and it's just getting started.

After about an hour I think it's more like Outlast, I didn't play Amnesia.  Particularly since you have no weapons in the time I've played.  The ship feels like the sprawl (DS2) and the pervasive sense of dread is pretty damn creepy.  Plus I know the movie and the setup for the game, so I'm quaking in my boots.  It definitely feels like a game you play only in spurts before it gets too be too much.

Finished the main story last night and rather enjoyed it, although I felt it ended pretty quickly as things got going.  This game is firing on all cylinders for me and is easily my GOTY.  Note that when you start the final mission, they tell you the story is ending, but you can come back to the world after.  Once you are done you spawn at a tower just like when you start the game and can free roam all you want.

Had a fun thing happen - while doing a dagger mission I triggered a huge ghul spawn. Turned out one of the guys in the area was a captain and they killed him while I just watched and took credit.

I had a warchief spawn with 2 captains and I shot a fire arrow at the 3 of them and it killed both captains.  Weird odds that they would both be vulnerable to fire arrows.

One of the most frequent complaints Iíve seen is that the save points are really spread out.  Iím waiting to see if PC patches/moders can add in the option to save anywhere or at least put in some additional check points.  You can argue that checkpoints add to tense atmosphere of the game all you want but I donít have the time to deal with that silly nonsense.

I'm not too excited about this either, especially if you narrowly escape death and then have to do it all over again because you couldn't save.

I don't think the non-combat controls are horrible, but I do agree they could use some tweaking. Climbing up on something is particularly frustrating, as you may make several attempts at it and it doesn't take, then finally it says "Oh yeah, you can climb here" and lets you climb up. I think AC was better at climbing, Mordor is better at dropping. Both are annoying in terms of sticking to terrain.

The climbing was my biggest control issue initially. I didn't know what I could or couldn't climb/scale or how best to do it. I had the exact same problem in the AC games. But like those after an hour and change I got it down. I have almost no problems now with using structures to climb or maneuver on.

Only thing I do wish is you could move faster on it. Going up/down is not so bad but trying to shimmy left/right can be painfully slow.

Agreed, I think they nailed the non combat controls.  Being able to sneak and sprint is awesome, they made it easy to drop down to hang and run along tops of walls when sneaking around.  Some areas do seem like you can climb but then you can't, but I haven't seen too much of this.  The little boost from running over rocks or jumping down is also great.

The big fights can be particularly tough early on as you have very few abilities to use.  I have almost everything unlocked now and I find I can mow down even large groups without much trouble.  Early on I would say you have to run and regroup sometimes.  Also the game asks you to take out the bodyguards of the war chiefs to make the fight easier.  There are fights in the garrisons where they sound the alarm and you just get an endless tide of bad guys.  I would say in this case you got reamed by the RNG and have to move the fight to a different location or wait and power up a bit.

Reviews are currently looking pretty good, with some high and low.  IGN has a bad one and games radar just gushes about it.  I want to get this, but want to wait for the bargain bin too.  Seems like most reviews say it goes on too long and loses it's luster.

Possibly stupid question:

Does anyone know how to tell what your current "Power" level is? All I see is the progress bar to the next tier.

As it stands I have no clue if a level 8 Orc is easy or impossible.

Wondering that myself, only thing I've noticed so far is the higher level the more strengths/immunities and less weaknesses they seem to have.  The one I just took down was 15 and literally immune to everything but straight up attacks, I couldn't even jump over him.  I think I'm finally starting to hit my groove with the combat system, just pulled off a 110 hit combo and I have to say it felt awesome.

I think this is right.  I've fought some guys that you can only hurt by using finishing moves.  Nothing else damages them.  I got a rune that allows me to go 10 or 15 seconds without even hitting any baddies and it doesn't break the combo.  Some of the abilities even extend the combat more so that each crit is 2 or 3 x combo and you can even get hit once and not break the combo.  So good.  The shadow strike is a move I hadn't used much but it rules for running guys down or extending combos.

Yeah, I think it's important to note that the open world design of this game is nothing revolutionary. It's a serviceable open world game with the typical missions, side quests, and collectibles you'd expect from any "decent" open world game. What makes it great is the Nemesis system and the solid mechanics of the combat. I'd also say that because the skill tree/weapon upgrade system is more in-depth than we've seen in similar open world games, you get more of a sense of purpose in hunting down optional content than you do in say..Watch Dogs. In Shadow of Mordor, you need to hunt down that collectible because it gives you money to purchase upgrades. In Watch Dogs or Assassin's Creed, a lot of times the only reason to hunt that collectible down is for bragging rights.

That's all to say that I would be hesitant to recommend this game to someone who doesn't like Ubisoft-style open world games in general. At its very core, that's what it is, and I'm not sure if the Nemesis system would be enough to keep someone who doesn't like that kind of game from getting bored.

Agree, but I thought the weapon rune system was pretty neat too.

The combat in this game is so good it's ridiculous.  I'm about half way through main missions and I've done a ton of side content so I'm at the bottom tier of the P ability tree.  I am flying around huge groups, cutting off heads, shadow striking, turning allies, all in one group.  They nailed it with the combat in this game.  AC just got owned.

Middle Earth AC with the Batman combat engine is pretty much a spot on description of the game.

I forgot to mention I am throwing people off cliffs, too.

I'm going to guess that you hadn't downloaded it prior to release?  I know when I pre-ordered it, it wasn't available to stream until the 28th, then I had to set up the download manually.  Not sure why they can't add an option to auto-start the download on a pre-purchase.

They do Caine, if you go to the pre-order before the pre-load starts, I think it's enabled by default.
