What will they think of next?
12002  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / RE4 - a question on: January 15, 2005, 10:00:39 AM
I think that if it's treasure then you can sell it.  If you need it for a puzzle, it won't be an item that you can sell.

12004  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Now that the dust has long settled, Zelda Wind Waker sales on: January 15, 2005, 04:56:31 AM
Hey all, I was just looking at a game store site, I noticed that the heading for the next Zelda game talks about an older, more mature Link going on his new adventure, I figured that Nintendo had bowed to the pressure off of the last Zelda and it's cartoon look.  I have never been as wowed by a game as I was with the graphics in that one and I'm sad to see a change, but oh well.

So my question is this, how did The Wind Waker end up selling?  Did it do well for a Zelda title?  For a AAA Nintendo title?  Does anyone have any figures?
12005  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Resident Evil 4 Impressions on: January 14, 2005, 06:13:41 PM
Updates impressions.

I am enjoying the combat more now that I have tactics in place.  I can get the shoot and kick combo to work most of the time now.  I can even shoot thrown weapons out of the air at time.  One time I shot a guy with a dynamite stick and he dropped it and blew himself and two others up.  Good stuff.  Combat is fun.

I finished the first boss battle and I really liked it.  It was different than anything else I can remember playing.

On the second boss battle now and I died the first time, I'll have to try agian.

As was previously mentioned, the Codec conversations are terrible and unnecessary.  I don't see why they were added.

I also don't like the merchant parts.  It doesn't fit into the series (IMO) and kind of takes away from the whole thing.  Not enough to make it a bad game, but I just don't think it fits.

Story is still going strong and get's better.  As I mentioned before, I love this universe and the stories always have me hooked.

this was really cool.  After the cut scene, I went to the lake and was shooting the water just to see the effect.  Well, after about 5 shots the monster LUNGED out of the water and ate me, scared the crap out of me!!!!

12006  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Tron being remade on: January 13, 2005, 11:26:17 PM
I have a bad feeling about this.
12007  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Resident Evil 4 Impressions on: January 13, 2005, 07:01:32 PM
Let me state this first: I never had any problems with the control scheme in the other Resident Evil games.  I kow they were clunky compared to some games that I'd played, but in the context of the game (static camera angles, etc.) they worked just fine for me.  After 15 mins, I never had trouble moving around.

Ok onto RE4.  I'm glad that it's still Resident Evil.  I was worried with the elimination of Umbrella and zombies (at least as far in as I am) that it wouldn't feel like an RE game.  Whatever the hell those villagers are on, they certainly act like zombies.  They sound like zombies.  They die like zombies.  The first time I popped a head, I remembered the sound from previous games.  The villager even kept walking for a bit before he fell, a la previous games in the series.  ^_^

The graphics are nice, as most have pointed out, but for me they are not nearly as good as the static, prerendered stuff in other games, especially the two Gamecube exclusives.  The environments in those games were so damn good, I want all games to look like that.  I'm sure that I am in the minority with this one.  While the rooms and areas do look very nice in RE4, they are not as detailed as I would have liked and I know this is just from the transition to full 3D (and being on a console.)

The camera angle is a bit tricky, you really feel like you are living Leon's tale (as IGN reviewed I think), but I would like more access to look around.  They really should have included a free-look option where I can at least zoom into first person view even if I have to stop.  I want to look around at all sorts of stuff.  I am constantly fidgeting with the c-stick to get a better view of things, even while running to accomodate for slopes and what not.  While I don't want to play as an FPS, I would have like more control over the camera.

Combat is GREAT!  I don't play many console games anymore, so my precision is still tuned for a mouse.  I usually have my mouse sensitivity really high too, so it took me some time (and wasted ammo) to adjust to the aiming.  I really like this part though, it's nice to drop a guy with a shot to the knee, then aim again and pop his head.  I've also shot dynamite being through at me and had it blow up in their face.  Thank you for saving me the ammo mister!  Which brings me to another point.  My first encounter with multiple zombies, I was playing like I know...conserver ammo!  Well that didn't last long as I see there is ammo galore in this one.  I have more bullets than I know what to do with and I love it!  I normally wouldn't use the shotgun until much later in the game and already I'm blowing fools up with it.  The rifle is particularly sweet, if I do say so myself.

Audio is nice, although I'm only listening through the simulated surround of my Sony Vega.  I'm sure it's much better on a better setup.  The music adds to the mood and creeps me out sufficiently.

Story has me reeled in, as have all the other ones.  I just love this world.  I always want to know what's going on with RE games.  This one is no different.

Some have commented on reloading and I have zero probs with it.  It works so well in the context of the game, I wouldn't want a button set to reload individually.  The one thing that I don't understand how they missed is a strafe function.  3D requires strafing, there's just no way around it.  I have found a hundred places where I could have used strafe.  Maybe in the next one they'll implement it.  I can get past not being able to move and shoot, but no strafe just won't do.

Now for some story speculation, so SPOILERS...

These are just thoughts written down...The Zangief looking guy (big cheese) looks entirely too much like Mr.X or whatever the Nemesis' were called.  His outfit atleast.  Also, the injection into Leon's neck, carry our blood, so on and so forth.  I have a feeling that Umbrella isn't gone after all, adn I couldn't be happier. I can't wait to see where it all goes, so please no spoiler posts without a warning.

So aside from my gripes, I'm still enjoying it and I'm glad that I got it.  It's nice to be back in the RE universe and I look forward to seeing where this one goes.
12008  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / How did Nintendo get the Resident Evil series? on: January 13, 2005, 05:07:04 PM
Unbongwah, I remember reading that RE4 will be released on the PS2 eventually, but what about the other two RE exclusives for the GC?
12009  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / How did Nintendo get the Resident Evil series? on: January 13, 2005, 03:45:02 PM
This isn't a bashing post in any way, I'm actually just curious.  I have had a gamecube since day one, and all the Nintendo consoles before it.  I'm just wondering, how did they land the Resident Evil series?  Not because of the much talked of kiddie-aspect of Nintendo (which I don't share the same opinion), but because of total market share.  RE:Remake and RE0 were both really good games, IMHO.  I think the other 3 and Veronica sold like hot cakes too.  I wonder how many copies would have sold if it was released on another console, or all three for that matter.  What did Nintendo do to get Capcom to commit to Nintendo's console?  Does anyone know or remember what the selling point was?

I think the Alliance lands were done first, so they really have some cool looking areas.  I've only played Horde, so I've had to travel to see them, but there are some really cool looking lands for both.  I play UD and I've really enjoyed it.

12019  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW - The Rogue Class on: January 10, 2005, 11:50:41 PM
I had two human paladins come up to me yesterday.  I'm a level 41 rogue they were lvl 36 or 37.  I play on PvE so no ganking is possible.  One of the paladins turns on his PvP flag and starts jumping around to let me know he wants to fight.  So I attack him and basically get him down to nothing.  Then his friend starts to heal him and I see I'm losing this fight.  So I start to run away and then vanish.  I see that he does the /rude emote to make a rude gesture at me.  This makes me mad.  So I stay stealthed and creep back up.  They've decided to stay and creep, both with their flags on.  The one who gestured at me has maybe a sliver health left.  I cheap shot him and ss-evis and he's toast.  Then I go to work on the next guy and take him out without even getting hit.  It was a thing of beauty.

They actually do this worse than any other game.  Normally I would have  big group designated as 1, but within that big group, say archers as 2.  Well you can't do that in BFME.  They can only be assigned to one group number.  I don't like it. frown

12031  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / BFME - Difficulty? on: December 29, 2004, 09:21:53 PM
That's what I was afraid of.  If  a mission from level 2 is that hard, I was wondering about later missions just being ridiculous.  I'll have to play with those settings.  I don't want to buff at all, just need to gimp the amount of enemy units that come at me!
12032  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / LCD monitor question(DELL Price Drop) on: December 29, 2004, 07:28:45 PM
I'm also looking at LCDs.  What is everyone's recommendation?  I remember that Dell's LCD screens were recommended on a past thread about this.  Does the same still hold true?
12033  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / BFME - Difficulty? on: December 29, 2004, 05:56:41 PM
Hey all, I am at act 5 of the good campaign, but my Rohan army still hasn't cleared those first 3 battles that it is presented with.  So I go to finish the 3rd fight, right next to Helm's Deep.

I start the fight off with like 5 Rohan Cavalry battalions, 3 Archer battalions, and 6 Peasant battalions.  Most upgraded already.  within 60 seconds of starting the mission, I am rushed by 200 baddies.  They proceed to absolutely destroy me.  Not even a fight.  So I start over.  This time I go into my base immediately and build wells to heal.  This time I kick butt and have lots of units left over.

For the next 1.5 hours I have fight after fight across the map.  It's a war of attrition.  Every time I get a farm or outpost, they send tons of troops to destroy it.  The difficulty is exremely high (playing on Normal).  I can barely make any ground.  Now I eventually won the mission, but it was grueling and not very fun.  It was just a mass of troops thrown at the enemy with no strategy involved.  Is that how the whole game is?

Also, the Rohan army is worthless.  Archers are so damn slow, they never get to fights on time.  If some one comes around my flank, the archers get destroyed immediately.  All I do is build Cavalry and send it to mow down the baddies.

The AI for my units is terrible too.  I attack move and most horses just sit there.  Fight damn you!

Ok, that's all.  Any one else having these experiences?

where are they getting DHCP addresses from?  I am assuming its probably the router, but it needs to be asked.

second, are you using WEP or anything?

third, did you try doing an ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew on those computers?

Yes from the router, they should be.  No encryption.  Yes, renew didn't work because they did not have connection information.

UPDATE:  So I updated the firmware as just a troubleshooting step and it works now.  I didn't see anything in the release notes for the firmware about it, but oh well.

You can see the professions on the guild page...I saw them last night when I brought up the guild list from a new one I joined.  Listed name, level, professions and when they were last on.

Is this new?  Or does your guild make their guild notes their profession?

I would rather them work on fixing login...tabard doesn't mean anything if you can't play.

I'm pretty sure their network team is not the same team responsible for coding new features.

Good idea, I like it too.

Something else I'd like to see:  A page on your guild tab that shows your characters professions.  It's hard trying to remember who has what.

Hey all, I have a gripe with the BFME controls.  I'm used to Warcraft 3, where you can TAB through units in your group.  When I try to do this with BFME, the pause menu comes up.  Is there any way to change this?  How do you all cycle between battalions?

May I add that with my setup, I don't use AA or AF.  I have them both set to application controlled.

I am totally disappointed in the game's performance.  I was hoping it would run better than this on my machine.

I have
P4 2.6
1g pc3200
6600gt 128meg Nnidia

And in the first mission (Moria) of the good campaign the slowdown is so bad it takes my characters a good 20 seconds just to cross my 17 inch screen!  They are moving in ultra ultra slow mo.  Not all the time, and not even when there happens to be anything happening.  Pitiful.  And I only have the settings at 10x7 Medium detail.

I am not sure I want to play it at all if it won't run any better than that.  At this speed it will take me hours and hours just to finish a single mission.  If noone else is seeing this, then I will assume it is my machine not being up to snuff and trade this off until my next rig a year from now.  Too bad cuz it was sure reeking of quality in every other department.

Something's wrong then, because I have the exact same specs and I can run on 10x7 with ultra-high settings and I have no slowdown.
