Giant Bomb reports the rumor that it will be a prequel, which sounds kind of cool.

That's a pretty good decision.  There was a lot they could do about the events leading up to where the player comes in... but I can't see how they would do much after the BS1 ending.  It was pretty definitive.

BTW, how much time was supposed to have passed between that first riot and where the game begins?

I would say a quite a few months.

yeah, it had to take some time to get all those makeshift turrets together.

I was wondering if it was months, or years.

At first I thought years, but then I thought it was too fresh down there still...a year at most is my guess.  Just my gut feeling is all.

Game certainly has potential.  I found the controls to be floaty too, but I think that was more lag than anything else.  When I threw a grenade, it looks like it just drops to the ground, then a second or two later you see it fly away.

Unfortunately, I spent most of the time wondering what the f was going on.  There was a lot of icons and crap on the screen and I never really knew what to do.

A couple times I spawned in a building that was too dark to see around and there didn't appear to be a door to get out....what's up with that?  Another time I spawned in a house with doors, but I couldn't open them.

Also my kit didn't have a handgun?  Just a main weap and grenades.  I also didn't like how you have to equip a grenade and then throw it...haven't we gotten past that?  Give me 1 button to throw grenades please.

The destructable environments sure are cool though.

Stolen from neogaf:

Quote
The intel (gathered from the preview and an interview with Producer Mark Noseworthy in the same Belgian magazine, PC Gameplay):

- Uses the Essence 2.0 engine with Havok physics, all optimised for DX10 and multicore support.
- It looks great, think of the DoW intro but with a bit less polygons here and there (in terms of lighting and all that it looks almost exactly the same).
- Units also use CoH-like unit AI for awareness and pathfinding to find cover and such.
- While DoW 2 shares the same (upgraded probably) engine as CoH[ it won't be "CoH in space",/B] while soldiers in CoH will ask themselves if flanking the enemy is the right option, in DoW2 it will be more like Space Marines asking themselves if they should use their jetpacks to jump over an Ork squad to attack them in the back. Different settings, different kinds of warfare.
- Preview only showed a destroyed city landscape, akin to DoW (but more detailed), other tilesets will offer deserts, jungles, mountains and other cities.
- Only the Orkz and Space Marines were revealed, more races on the way obviously and to be to revealed later this year (though how many isn't known).
- Co-op campaign for both the Orkz and Space Marines, apparently not for the other to-be-revealed races.
- More focus on making units and squads unique; every unit has got a name (at least in the campaign it seems), more details and more animations.
- Relic wants to give players rewards at the end of a mission like wargear (armor, weapons, rare objects); "Let's pimp out squads with cool stuff!", you will see these items in-game as well of course.
- You'll fight your way through the campaign with the same squads.
- You can't control more than six squads! I am not sure if this is campaign-only but the preview made it sound like it wasn't.
- The squads are going to be a lot more interesting than before though.
- A squad leader (one or several?) will need to survive if you want to complete a mission; you really have to look out for your squads and don't treat them like cannon fodder.
- There is a lot more interesting commentary from the units as well; if your SM commander is holding a Thunder Hammer f.e. then the opponent will specifically comment on that, Ork Warchief saying something like "Ooh, nice hammer, but mine is bigger!". The warchief will say something else if the commander doesn't have the hammer.
- The campaign lets Space Marines operate from a spaceship, you'll get a view of an underlying planet and you'll be able to choose from different missions (which are tagged with difficulty colours, green, blue and red).
- Certain reward items won't be useable at once in the campaign, so they'll be taken back to the SM spaceship for research.
- Dreadnought can now also trample Orkz.
- No sea or air units (though jetpacks are still in of course).
- Development team of 55 people has been working on it since September 2006.
- Release in early 2009 or later.

If it's like the COD4 beta, go to XBOX LIve marketplace and selet redeem code.  Input the digits and you should be all set.

Wait times are going to vary for everyone depending on what regional distribution center you are pulling from.

I was praising my Massachusetts distribution center in the earlier Netflix threads, but I've been unsuccessfully trying to get the blu-ray I Am Legend since release and it doesn't look like it's coming any time soon.  So maybe my center's not that different than the rest of yours.

they're probably busy shipping it off to other states.  I've gotten stuff shipped to me from as far away as Oregon.  Of course I don't feel like waiting for the disc to return to them in Oregon so I usually double them up into an envelope going back to the local one.

I live near SF and I had a blu-ray ship from Phoenix once.

From 1UP.com

I'm not really sure about this one, but I figure some people will be excited.  All I know is that in order to play the special forces classes, you have to be in a clan and that sounds like ass to me.

Quote
We've brought you several big stories on SOCOM Confrontation in the past month, but today Sony passed on one more important piece of information: a release date. The latest iteration of the popular online shooter franchise will be arriving on September 16.

To celebrate this news, tomorrow Sony will be launching SOCOM.com, an online community site devoted to the game. Pre-release, the site will provide regular news updates as well as a place for fans to get together. Once the game has launched, gamers will discover full integration with the website, including near real-time stat tracking, clan management tools, and more.

You can check out 1UP's most recent online preview of SOCOM from the beginning of the year, but if you want a more up-to-date and in-depth look at the game, you'll want to pick up the May issue of EGM -- the one with the colorful SOCOM cover below. Check it out on newsstands next week or in your mailbox any day now if you're a subscriber. EDIT: And enjoy the new exclusive screenshot above!

I've been having all sorts of trouble even getting regular DVD versions of new releases lately.  I think right now I have 5 recent releases (the last month or so) still on Long Wait and a few other things on Short Wait.  Up until a month or two ago I never, ever had that problem.  It's really pissing me off that it's been weeks and I still haven't gotten new releases.

That's odd, I had Hitman (BR) on the top of my list the other day with Long Wait.  I returned a movie and Hitman shipped to me with no wait.

FWIW I've only played the campaign in non-splitscreen co-op mode but I haven't witnessed any slow down either.

This makes no sense (of course I believe you, I'm not referring to your experience). We have a wide variety of boxes here-manufacture date, HDMI, Pro, Elite, Arcade, etc. And it appears that its maybe 50/50 experiencing slowdown vs. not. How does this make any sense?

Makes sense to me just because of the shoddy quality control.  The 360's out there have vastly different levels of heat and load tolerance.  Many systems are probably in various stages of over heating and RROD.  Different ambient temps may be a factor.  Either way, I'm not that surprised.  Long gone are the days where every console of the same type is indeed the same.

I highly doubt all of that especially considering I have one of the newer 360 models so if anything I should be the one it runs smoothly for. If your talking about playing the game while the system is hot, that also couldn't apply either because when I was having the issues I had just recently booted the system. It's definitely a software issue, not hardware.

Newer doesn't necessarily mean better especially when it comes to Microsoft Tongue
I have a launch box that I leave on for days (through the night) and its working fine.  Although I wonder if the cooler temperatures in my basement have something to do with it.

I'm sure it does.  I've always wondered if most of the xbox problems are from people putting their consoles in enclosed spaces with no air flow at all, or similar situations.

I never really got into GI Joe, so I have no preconceived notions. It could waver from the story completely and I wouldn't notice it. As to Bay's Transformers, I'm not willing to dive back into that mire. The fact that they made bank does not a good movie make.

For those who didn't know, Netflix was down on Monday.  Looks like they're applying a 5% credit to your next bill for it:

from sfgate.com:

Quote
Online DVD rental leader Netflix Inc. said Wednesday it will provide a 5 percent credit on the monthly bills of customers affected by its Monday outage.

Netflix spokesman Steve Swasey did not disclose the number of customers affected, or the total amount that will be refunded, saying the credit will not have a material impact on the company's financial operations.

"The key thing here is: This was completely proactive on Netflix's part. There's no requirement for Netflix to do this, no obligation. There was no request for it. We thought it was the right thing to do," Swasey said.

Many of Netflix's 7.5 million members return, rather than receive, DVDs on Mondays after watching them over the weekend, Swasey said. The outage resulted in a one-day delay for people expecting to receive DVDs on Tuesday.

Swasey confirmed that one section of the site, its ratings system, remained down until Tuesday morning, as the company had decided to prioritize getting the ordering and shipping functions back online.

Monday's outage knocked out its Web site for about 11 hours. It marked the second-longest disruption since Netflix launched its service nine years ago. Netflix's Web site was down for more than 18 hours last July when the Los Gatos-based company lowered its prices.

Netflix shares were down 1 cent, to $37.11, in midday trading Wednesday.
