I forgot to post that Best Buy had a descr up on the game and it mentions being able to play drums and sing in this game...so it sounds like Activision is going to make this a Rock Band-esque effort.

On a side not, I got Spider-Man FoF on this same sale for $20.  I enjoyed the demo enough that I was willing to spend $20 on that game.

Ok back to drums after a fun day on guitar.  I've calibrated and re-calibrated the game 20 times.  No matter what I do the guitar stays good, but the drums never improve.  I'm going to go on record and say that for me, the drums are so brutally unforgiving (on easy, even), it removes any fun at all.

What model TV do you have?

I have a Philips LCD, it was brand new in August.  I don't recall the model number, I got it from Costco.

There's no tape or anything on my drum pads.  Just fresh out of the box.  I think I'm going to initiate the RMA process.  These drums have been infuriating.  Sadly, I don't know anyone who has RB in person that I can try their drums and see.

Oh and Chaz: please ask for Metallica's Harvester of Sorrow....I heard it again after like 10 years and it would be so awesome for Rock Band!!!   drool

Admittedly, I have no context of where those shots are taken within PS3, but yeah, the icons look like old space invaders and are rudimentary at best?

I would say maybe your drums are broken, but even when mine were, I could get through songs on Expert.  I am not sure how they would be unforgiving.  Can you elaborate on how you might feel you are missing.  Did you try the tutorial?  Can you get through that?

This was my thought as well.  You've obviously got at least a little rhythm if you can play the guitar, so there must be something else causing the problem.  I make everyone who plays at my house go through the tutorial, and even my 63-year-old parents with zero musical ability can hammer out some of the easy stuff.  There has to be something else going on with your drum set.

On a side note, it is now my life's goal to beat at least 5 of The Grue's leaderboard scores.  Dude, some of the points you rack up are insane.

Yeah I did both of the drum training sessions before I started playing the solo tour, because I've never played the drums before in any capacity.  What I feel like is happening, is that notes that I am hitting are missing a lot of the time.  I've been able to 5 star some songs, I don't really get to a point where I'm failing a song, but like you guys I want to get better scores.  When you miss every 10th note, it sucks for stringing together multipliers.  From the tiers that I've seen on easy so far, the beats are not at all difficult.  It just doesn't make sense to me how sometimes the game registers I am hitting the pad, and the other half of the time it doesn't.

EDIT:  Oh and by unforgiving, I mean that there's like a single millisecond where you can hit the drum pad ESP on double notes, otherwise you register as a miss.

You get gold stars if you play on expert and get ~150% of the points required for 5 stars.

Apparently now official.  From Thedigitalbits.com:

Japanese news site Nikkei.net  has just announced that Toshiba's plan is to immediately stop manufacturing all HD-DVD products (both players and recorders), and to stop selling them at end of March. The official announcement will happen at the press conference set for 5 PM Tokyo time. We'll be back with Toshiba's official statement as soon as it comes in.

Thanks to Keiko S. for the translation and links. Stay tuned...

At least on Amazon it's a simple click with the little popup prompt that goes away easily.

The only times it really bothers me is when I have to actually add the item to my cart on the site to see the supposed discount. That is irritating.

The HD DVD player is not obtrusive, so I'm perfectly fine with it living in my entertainment system for quite some time.  And like it or not, I won't be watching any BR movies until the prices come down.  I'm simply not paying $400 for a movie player.  I didn't do it with HD, and I'm not doing it with BR, even though the war is over, so I may as well enjoy what I have.

they've already got some Blu Ray on sale for under 400 bucks, so you might not have to wait long.

Not a bad price for a BR player.  Now if only the the PS3 would go on sale like that!

11192  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Rock Band Impressions! on: February 17, 2008, 09:29:41 AM
Yeah I've been playing on easy, I thought that might have something to do with it since easy guitar skips notes completely so that newbies can actually do it.

I originally had it calibrated to just LCD only, but then I manually did it and it set the off sets to whatever it set to.  I don't recall now.  Lag was one value and the AV one was another.

I just feel like I have to slow down my playing so much to make the notes.  I haven't seen a song yet that had me fumbling to hit the pad on time, it's like I hit the pad and it doesn't register.

One thing that I think happens is that I must hold the stick too loose and when I hit red, for example, it bounces and then taps the pad again.  Because I've seen a couple times where I'll finish the energy section, but then it'll play the drum click like I missed a note.

Do you have Rhythm? hehe. But seriously, you could try breaking the songs down in chunk. I never count or anything in these songs, I go solely by muscle memory. But i hear this helps people out. is it offbeat kick pedal notes? I find myself wondering what's up until I noticed that im hitting the kick pedal at the wrong time. The timing window is no more harsh than that of the guitar.

Well I am a 30 y.o. white guy, so as much rythmn as my body can carry.  But seriously, easy is really easy, even if you've never played drums.  I don't feel like I cannot keep up with what the notes are, it's like I hit the pad but the game registers a miss.

Start up "Who's Next" in practice mode for drums, and put it on repeat on the organ intro.  There you can test out your set.  Does it seem like there's a delay from your physical hit to your on-screen hit?  Drum a basic beat, is it missing any of the notes?  Try doing a fast roll, does it pick up all the hits or does it start  blanking out?

And just to cover all the bases...are you hitting all the bass notes?  I've seen some people ignore the orange line and wonder why the game keeps registering a miss every 4th beat.

Ok I did the organ intro to the Who song, it's not who's next, and my drums seem to be registering ok.

I went back and played the weezer song over and over and finally 5 starred it by slowing down my playing unnaturally.  I'm basically not even playing to the beat anymore, but to the colors, which sucks.  Yes I have calibrated as well.  I'm hoping the higher levels will be more in tune with the music, I suppose guitar was the same way.

...still,i hope they have an 'easy' setting,so i can at least see/hear/play the  majority of the songs..the easy setting would be for people like me,Aerosmith fans, but not so much Guitar hero fans,LOL

GH games are more for the casual crowd I think than the ubers who make the youtube vids.  There will definitely be an Easy setting.

Maybe Neversoft is learning better note charts.  Dream On was fun to play even on Hard mode and it was not too difficult.  I got 5 stars and I think I've only done that with a handful of songs in GH3 on Hard.

After playing with the drums for about 3 hours tonight, I am frustrated to all end.  I messed with calibrating for quite a bit tonight in hopes it would help out, but the damn drums are punishing.  There's barely a millisecond sweet spot to hit the note and the dual notes are ridiculous in their leeway for hitting them on time.  There was at least 5 times in each song I wanted to snap my drumsticks in half wondering how that note did not register.
