This game makes me fantasize about playing drums in a band IRL, but the only reason I'd want to be in a band is to get laid more and drummers are all the way in the back FTL.

LOL!!!

sounds like shin splints

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Periostitis

read the causes section.  because your tall, i'm guessing your taking longer strides landing on your heel pretty hard.  or maybe its running on concrete.  i used to get this all the time from running on hard surfaces.

even the elliptical hurts?  you might want to take it easy before you make things real bad.

The elliptical doesn't hurt at all, it's only running.  I thought some form of shin splints too, just trying to figure out how to make it easy on the ol' body slywink

What did you base your decision on when buying the shoes?  I find it best to go to a good running store where the people can either watch you run and make a determination on which shoes you should buy or look at some of your older shoe's soles and make that determination that way.  Just having new shoes isn't enough, but instead having the right shoes for the way you run.

I went to a running specialty shop and had the person there measure me up and watch my walk/run stride to fit me to a specific pair o' shoes.

How many miles have you run in your current pair of shoes?  I ask because I had almost the exact same thing (slap-slap-slap) with my old shoes.  I'm a big dude so my shoes don't last very long before I need to replace them.

Also, have you tried running on a treadmill?  I'm wondering if that would make the problem worse or better.

The shoes are basically brand new.  I've had them for about 2 weeks.  I'm 6'2" 185, so I don't necessarily burn through shoes fast.

I don't use a treadmill, if I am at the gym I use other machines.  Running is something that I'd like to do when I don't feel like going to the gym and to use others muscles that handle the impact better.

If you're still relatively new to running, this is almost certainly due to your legs just not being in "shape" yet.  I can't imagine it has anything to do with landing on your heels, in fact I can't think of a way to run that doesn't involve landing on your heels.

Basically, as you're running you're pulling your toes up as your foot hits the ground by flexing the muscles on the front of your shin.  If you don't, then the sole of your shoe smacks flat on the ground.  Talk about a momentum-killer.  You always do this when you walk, but I suspect some people exaggerate this when they run.  Those muscles on the front of your shin just aren't use to the effort.  Warming them up for 10-15 minutes will help a lot, which is probably why the pain goes away.

I'll side with others here and say warm up those shin muscles as well as you can, and just bear with it for awhile.  Eventually they'll strengthen and the pain will vanish.  This is just like shin splints, where the bone takes awhile to heal and strengthen, then it's never a problem again.

Unless I'm totally wrong, in which case you'll probably be crippled.  icon_wink

There's another thing, I do notice a very pronounced slapping when my feet hit the ground.  It's like heel - > slap - > ouch!

I do pull up on my toes though when I run, I can feel those muscles isolated and in pain lol.

If I sprint, this doesn't happen, I'm not ever on my heels.  (say, playing softball and running the bases, or going after a fly ball).  If I try and run though, it's like I lose all athletic ability and can't do it right.

If this is your first time running, I'm guessing you're just pushing yourself too much too early.  It takes a bit of time for a body to get used to the extra impact of running on the bones and joints than you get from a bike or elliptical.

How far and fast are you running right now?

I had been jogging about a mile or two a few months ago, but with the cold weather I just did the gym instead and stopped running.  Now as I've gone back I find I can barely even get started or my shins kill me.  I can't run real fast with my legs like this, it's more of a jog than anything else and not even a mile because it hurts too bad to continue.

Where'd you get the idea that you're not supposed to land on your heels?  Are you a sprinter?

Well the common theme I've found in running form articles is that landing on your heels; 1) arrests momentum 2) is jarring to the muscles, joints, etc of the legs.  They go on to explain you are supposed to land mid-foot to the balls of your feet, roll forward, and push off your toes.
11170  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Help fixing my running stride on: April 21, 2008, 08:04:55 PM
Hmm well maybe I'm using the wrong terminology then.  I guess I should say that I want to start fixing it by not landing on my heels.  From multiple articles that I've read it seems to be a common theme that running on your heels is bad for the body and for momentum.

I got new shoes fitted at a specialty running store, so I figured those were ok.  I can't run real far without them hurting, we're talking minutes, so mileage is not an issue.  I do run on cement, so I bet that is part of the problem, but there's no track close by so I am limited to that.

The pain does not stop when I start to walk, it hurts real bad, esp when my toes curl up, not so much when I point them down.  After 10-15 mins, the pain goes away completely.

Hey all, I've recently been trying to run to compliment using the stationary bike at the gym and the elliptical machine, but my shins hurt so bad it's crazy.

I've narrowed it down to the fact that I land on my heels.  I land on them when I walk and I land on them when I run or jog and it's bad bad bad.

Problem is, no matter what articles I've read of videos I watch, I still can't break the habit.

Are there any runners out there that have any tips for breaking the habit of landing on your heels?

Thanks!

Def keep your foot pressed down on the pedal.  Instead of lifting your toes up, lift your whole foot with your quads and press down.  You only need to do it about halfway to register.

I don't play with the pedal pressed down, but that's just me.  I rest the ball of my foot lightly on the pedal (pedal is all the way up), keep my heel off the floor, and "bounce" the ball of my foot up and down using the quads.   You can get away with playing heel-down on the easy levels, but the double and triple kicks in Expert will wear you out in a hurry.   If you've never drummed before, your legs are going to scream at you until they get used to the movements.

I think leo8877 is also recommending heel-up playing.  What he means by keeping your foot down is that you should keep it pressed down in-between notes.  You wear yourself out a lot faster if you hold your leg hovering at the ready for the next bass hit instead of resting it in the depressed position.

Ridah what are you sitting on when you play drums?  If your knee is at an odd angle it can really add to the fatigue.

Yeah I keep my foot down between notes.  It's resting and the pedal is depressed when there's no double bass note.  My knee is at a 90 degree angle and I just barely lift up my leg when I need to hit notes.  I don't play drums on higher difficulty though, so maybe you guys have to do it diff.

If your guitar isn't registering, it might be broken.  Lots of people have had issues with guitars not working properly with overdrive and needed to return them.

I agree on the flight mechanics, though hovering working fine.  I tended to use that most often, then fly to the next stockpile, crashing into the ground at least once on the way.

I did that until I reversed the flight controls and immediately got alot better.

I tried that, too, but flight is still wonky.  I think it has more to do with where the camera is located when you fly.  I keep trying to adjust to get a better view.  I didn't see an option to change that.

The camera is a little weird when you fly.  I had to be real gentle on the controls.

Hey all, I tried to find an old thread for this, but I couldn't find one.  I just finished watching the movie and I enjoyed it.  I read in Roger Ebert's review that it was like watching a natural disaster that you couldn't turn away from and I felt the same way watching it.  I especially liked how they did the music for the movie...it created a really ominous tone.

I have a question though...what did they use oil for at the turn of the century?

I definitely feel bad in a snobbish kinda way for people who don't give music they aren't familiar with a shot.  I pretty much download it all and have been pleasantly surprised that I enjoy either listening to, playing or both almost every song I've downloaded.  (didn't like Cherry Bomb, that's about it)

Trying out new music can be very nice, and it often takes a few listens to appreciate a new style or band that you aren't familiar with.

I don't think that's fair, really.  I am more than happy to try new music when buying CDs and such, but the unknown songs get very, very little play in Rock Band.

I was in love with "Maps" when I first got the game.  I'd heard the song before, but it really opened up for me in the game.  I tried numerous times to get my family or friends to play it and have met with, "Meh, let's do Dani California again" every time.

Maps rules!!
