Well I said last week that I might pickup Hotel Dusk, but would likely wait until the reviews are in.
Soooo...after all the glowing reviews I'll definitely be picking it up this week. Just hope I can find it.  paranoid

I agree with what everyone has said here for Microsofts reason's for making this move. I also think Microsoft has just got to bite the bullet and do a price cut real soon; no later than March 31st. They've got to get their existing 360's moving.

And at the same time, Nintendo has apparently announced that they're increasing production to more than 1 million units / month.

http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=94412

I'd take this article with at least a grain of salt since they're doesn't actually appear to be a named source backing up the increased production reference. All that's referenced is the AP article from yesterday and that made no mention of production increases of this magnintude.

But if it's true, based on Microsoft slowing it's production is it possible that we might see the total sales for Wii's and 360's on par by year end?

Based on the reviews this game has been getting I'm definitely planning on picking it up in the very near future. And If comes anywhere close to the fun I'm currently having with Star Ocean it will be well worth it.

Of course having only had a PS2 for about 6 months there's still so many more RPGs I haven't yet played. Hell I haven't even played DQ VIII, VP 2, DC2 or any of the Suikodens or SMT's!  icon_confused
Don't forget the Shadow Hearts series (ESPECIALLY Covenant)   icon_biggrin

Not really excited for Rogue Galaxy.  Have way too much on my plate currently.

I actually have a list with about 20 PS2 RPGs that a friend compiled for me. And yes Shadow Hearts Covenants is most definitely on it.   finger

Wii: I rented Red Steel again so I'll be trying to finish my saved game then some LOZ: TP.
PS2: A friend just gave me Star Ocean, so I'm going to give it some play time. Liking it quite a lot so far.
XBox: I also just traded Jade Empire Ltd for Doom 3 Ltd, so I'm going to give it whirl.
PC: If there's anytime left I'll try to get some time in on Titan Quest or SW: Empire at Large.

Apparently DS units have been selling in the Americas at the rate of 9 every minute since the launch. Now lets see... I started typing about 90 seconds ago, that means.... Damn I need that picture of the DS pumping out bills  icon_biggrin

They are in a pretty good position right now, that's for sure.  If they can keep the games flowing like they are with the DS, it's going to be a great next couple of years for gamers.

Unfortunately, games for Nintendo consoles haven't come out with the regularity of games for Nintendo handhelds since the SNES. In the near future, that trend doesn't seem to be changing.

If Nintendo can continue to build on the momentum they currently have with the Wii, I think we'll see that trend change.  I expect 3rd party support for Nintendo to be better in 2008 than any single year during the last decade.
7850  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [Wii} Nintendo Publishes the Numbers on: January 26, 2007, 12:15:53 AM
The AP has posted an article from a Nintendo Press conference. Here's a link from a Louisiana news site:

 http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/J/JAPAN_NINTENDO?SITE=WWL&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

There's many, many numbers quoted including how Nintendo stocks are going through the roof; no surprise there. Some of you may be interested in the number quoted for 2006 Wii sales.

3.19 million  Globally
1.25 million  The Americas
1.14 million  Japan
   .8 million Europe

The article doesn't actually give the European sales so I did the math to arrive at them.
It also isn't clear in the article if these are the numbers for the total sold by year end 2006 or total sold to date. I emailed a friend of mine that's currently teaching in Kyoto and he replied that newspapers there reported the same numbers as sales up to Dec 31, 2006. He hasn't send me a link yet; not that any of us could read it anyways.

The article also quotes a Nintendo source as stating they met their goal of 4 million units shipped for 2006. I seem to recall Nintendo claiming that they would sell 4 million Wii's in 2006; I'm not 100% sure about this though and I can't find an old article from the original press conferences.

Anyways the Wii sales for Japan is IMHO just mind boggling.  1.14 million is almost 1% of the population of Japan. So in other words; in slightly less than 4 weeks 1 out of every 100 Japanese citizens purchased a Wii.
7851  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Diamonds in the rough on: January 25, 2007, 10:49:20 PM
Eternal Darkness; Sanity's Requiem  (GC); every bit as good as RE 1 for GC
Beyond Good and Evil; excellent game on any of last gen's consoles
Phantom Dust (XBox); Excellent artistic style and a blast to play online.
Mechassault; Phantom Wars (DS)
Killer 7 (GC) One of the wierdest -in a good way- games I've ever played
Resident Evil; Deadly Silence (DS). The knife slicing game you unlocked made it worth it.

I'm sure there more, now let me think....
7852  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Weekend Recap 22/Jan/06 on: January 23, 2007, 01:58:17 AM
As I predicted on Friday, my kids took over the consoles this weekend with many a session of Lego SW2, LOZ: TP, Wii Sports; and Midtown Madness 3. And between skating and cycling there wasn't much of an idle moment until Sunday afternoon. So other than a bit of Metroid Pinball on the DS, my gameplay was really non-existent. But there's always late nights on week days.

My actual gaming event for the weekend was when my son devised a way to play the Star Wars Miniatures, HeroClix and MechWarrior table tops together. Lets just say the rules were a bit loose, but it still made for a fun time. Annoying that my son's MadCatz had to step on my daughter's Princess Leia so many times that I lost count.  eek
If anyone knows of a way these can be officially combined, I'd appreciate any info or link.

The wife and I talked and instead of buying our son a GC (that I would use for the time being) we are just going to buy him a DS for his birthday in August. I will just wait on the Wii and get it as soon as one pops up. We both kinda feel that at 6 (turning 7 in August) a DS might be a good starting place for him, rather than a console (though he enjoys his V-Smile system), as there are probably going to be more interesting games on the DS for him to play with.

Thanks to all for your input and advice.

I'm late to the party on this post but I would have suggested waiting for a Wii and also getting a DS or even a GBA. Just for the reason that even though the PS2 has a large library of E-rated titles it doesn't have a lot of variety amongst them and not many of them are exclusives. Whereas the GC does, all of which can be played on a Wii.

The DS will also give him access to the GBA library which has an excellent variety of age appropriate titles. I'd recommend that when you pick-up your Wii to also purchase 2 GC wavebird controllers. There's a number of GC E-rated exclusives that he won't want to miss out on: Pikmin 1 & 2, 9 different Mario games, Legend of Zelda: WW & TP, Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion, Pokemon Coliseum and XD, etc... Not to mention that you and your wife will have a blast playing them too.  icon_wink

I'm assuming you are referring to a wheel.  Because I'm not sure many people would want to use Xbox 1 controllers over 360 wireless ones.  I do agree it seems strange that the 360 doesn't work with some of Microsoft's first party games.  But with the possible exception of Mechassault 1 I can't say I really miss any of them.

Great, glad you're not worried about having to spend unecessary cash; wish my pockets were as deep. I wasn't just thinking of my Logitech wheel, but my Logitech wireless controllers as well. I'm still not convinced backward compatibility is a big deal.  The SNES didn't need BC with the NES to succeed.  The Genesis didn't need BC with the SMS.  And the NES, SMS, PSx, and XBox all succeeded, despite being new products.

What you don't realize is that there's 2 aspects aspects to backward compatibility; software and hardware . Software is easy enough; the ability to play the previous gen's games on the current gen's system. Hardware is a bit more complicated as it involves peripheral and connectivity compatibility. Re. the Nintendo systems you list above with the exception of the SNES > NES all supported the same audio/video connector cable and some even supported the previous gen's controller. This made it very easy for someone with limited TV inputs to swap out systems; just as I did with my GC and N64.

The XBox 360 doesn't just fail on the software side of bc, but not a single XBox connector or peripheral can be used on a 360. IMO this is just money grabbing BS on M$'s behalf!!!
You can definitely count me in as someone in the group that won't upgrade due to lack of BC. I've used up all 4 of my component inputs and have too many non 360 compatible titles to just discard my XBox. And all of the technology aside there's just the principle of why support company that doesn't even support their own products; i.e. Midtown Madness 3, Rallisport Challenge 2, Top Spin, Project Gotham Racing 1 & 2, Mechassault 1 & 2 and on an on ....

I don't think this quarters line up is all that bad. We already have Wario Ware and some other games look quite promising; Sonic, SSX Blur, God Father Black hand.
I thought the GC version of SSX3 was the best of all 3, so if it's the same EA development team we know they can at least develop decent games for a Nintendo console.

I'm cautiously remaining hopeful for the God Father game. I initially thought it wouldn't fly but after seeing the last video of the in game footage I've changed my mind a bit; the controls look very good.

Another problem I have with the VC is that your games are tied to your system and not to an account. If your Wii is destroyed or stolen, your VC games are gone.

Well...you can copy VC Games to a SD memory card and then copy them back to a new Wii later.  I tested this and it worked fine.

So far I've downloaded 3 VC games and my kids and I have enjoyed them very much. I do think the pricing is a bit high and in fact I wrote Nintendo some time ago and suggested the prices be lowered accross the board. If people feel the prices are too high not purchasing is one option, but writing Nintendo is also another good option.

With as huge a company as Sony is, can you imagine what it means unexpectedly to make NO profit in a year?  At least if you know about it in advance, and can plan for it...

You do realize that Sony's Consumer Electronics division, the division to which the Playstation belongs, hasn't made a profit in 5 years. Based on those numbers, I doubt Sony's shareholders would be content with even just 1 more profitless year. And those profitless years for the CE division occured even during  the years that the PS2 was raking in the dough. In fact things are so bad that a shareholder at the last annual shareholders meeting stood up and shouted "give me back my Sony!"

Sony gambled and they're going to pay the price. The PS3 may eventually be profitable but not without loosing a large part of the market share they enjoyed with the PS2.

What Sony should have done is slated a unit for 2007 Christmas.  That unit should have been about as powerful as the 360, with no BluRay to keep costs down, but included wireless controllers in the package.  Pricing should have been around $299.

If they did that, they'd *OWN* next Christmas and never lose their core gamers to the 360.

Umm...yeah...sure. But why couldn't they have just have released a less powerful system in Fall 2005? Why wait until 2007 and let MS get a 2 year and Nintendo a 1 year market lead. I just don't see the logic in your argument.
7874  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Wii Dragonball Z on: January 13, 2007, 09:35:11 PM
I like anime, but really don't care for Dragon Ball Z. I origninally bought this game for my son, but I must say that DBZ-BT2 is propably my 2nd favorite game for the Wii. The little custscenes in menus are the most annoying feature of the game, but you can make them really silly by changing the language to Japanese. Which for some reason seems to make them and the other gooffy DBZ elements of the game more bareable.  icon_lol

This game uses the Wii controller better than any other game with the possible exception of Trauma Center. I think this game is highly underated; can't believe it was given equal or lower scores than the PS2 version by both gamespot and gamespy!  I rented if for the PS2 before I bought if for the Wii and have noticed that the graphics are much sharper and smoother in the Wii version; especially environment destruction effects / animations.

And as someone has already said this game is a very solid fighter. In fact I'd say I've enjoyed it as much or more than Soul Calibur 2, Mortal Kombat Deception or Street fighter Anniversary. This game also has some rpg-like elements to it such that you can improve you characters abilities by finding and purchaseing enhancements. And the adventure mode apparetnly includes the entire story line of all of the DBZ series; can't confirm this because my son and I haven't played it that far yet.   icon_wink

Sony should have waited another year at least and just basked in the greatness of the PS2. If they had focused on another year or two of blockbuster PS2 releases, that woudl have been awesome.

I completely disagree. Sony's biggest mistake for this current gen was not sticking to their 5 year life cycle and realeasing the PS3 in 2005. And letting their -already late- spring 2006 release date slip to the Fall only added more hurt to the existing pain.

For those who said it's all about the games I couldn't agree more. The general public / casual gamer could care less about system specs. Only hardcore gamers -like the majority that post here- care about such issues; hardcore gamers are the minority not the majority.

Sony should have released a less powerful system on time and continued their market momentum.

The only Wii system problem I am aware of was that some of the initial batch couldn't get the update to get online. These would get one or two specific error codes and had to be sent back to Nintendo for replacements. I would guess these are already out of circulation.

I have heard a story or two about Wiimotes breaking down, but I don't think I have heard of that around here.

The biggest issue I have with the Wii hardware is that the Wiimotes chew up batteries like candy.

This is the only complaint I have as well. And the battery life is drained much faster if you use the Wii Classic Controller. So much so that I took one of my 2 classic controllers back and now mostly just use the GC Wavebird controller for VC games.

Urgh, I need more HDMI ports.  I've heard system selectors that support multiple devices affect the image quality-  is that true?

I've expererienced signal degradation in the past with S-Video and composite switchers. In some cases it's not just the image for the switched signal but images for any of the inputs; i.e. a bad switcher can cause inteference for the entire TV irregardless of the signal source.

I recently and reluctantly bought a component switcher as I ran out of component inputs on my HDTV when I got my Wii component cables. I'm pleased to say that I tested it thoroughly and haven't noticed any image degradation for any of the input sources. I was surprised as it wasn't a very expensive switcher.

My advice is to get a switcher that you can return if necessary and then thoroughly test it. In the worst case scenario you can get one of the more expensive powered switchers that have grounded AC plugs. These switchers are gauranteed to be signal degradation free.

Secondly the cube seems to auto-scale 4:3 games to widescreen whereas the cube never did this. It's still not perfect but far better than the cube.  Metroid Prime looks that much better now that Samus doesn't appear to have a major weight problem.  icon_wink

wait hold on, I've got a question about this.  first, is there an option to *not* have the Wii auto-stretch native 4:3 games (if you're 100% positive that's what it's actually doing)?  I'm one of those HDTV owners who prefers having the black bars on the sides of 4:3 SDTV broadcasts...I hate having any source's aspect ratio messed with

second, I'm not quite sure what you mean by the Metroid Prime comment.  are you saying you used your TV's stretch mode before when playing it?  if so, there's no difference whether the Wii is doing the stretching or a HDTV, the aspect ratio of a 4:3 source is getting messed up one way or another.  some versions of stretch modes deceive a viewer's eyes by keeping the stuff in the middle of the screen look normal, but the sides of the picture are then out of whack instead

In answers to your questions:

The Wii is different than the GameCube in that you can set an aspect ratio (4:3 or widescreen) and the output signal type (480p or 480i).
So if you don't want 4:3 games to be stretched to accommodate widescreen you can set your aspect ratio option to 4:3.

In reference to your 2nd question. My HDTV -a Sony KV30HS420- has modes to display in standard, fullscreen, WideZoom and Zoom. When handling a 16:9 component signal all the above modes are auto overriden with the ability to manually overide.  Previously with the Cube a 480p signal for a 4:3 game -i.e. Metroid Prime- would cause some very noticeable horizontal stretching; i.e. Samus looked very full-bodied. With the cube I'd have to overide to Standard mode (black bars on sides) or WideZoom mode (minor vertical clipping) to compensate. But the Wii seems to have some compensation so that a 4:3 game is scaled much better to a widescreen format. Of course If I don't want the scaling I can just set the Wii display ratio to 4:3 which frames the image in black vertical bars. I've also noticed this auto-scaling with Wii games such as DBZ: BT2 which support 480p but only a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Based on what I'm seeing there's definitely something ATI has added to the Wii's GPU that's different than the Cubes in regards to p-scan output.

This is a bit off topic, but I wanted to say how utterly surprised I was when I changed the kids PS2 from Composite to Progressive-Component.  The PS2 graphics are downright nice looking when I did, and most games seem to support 480P.

Kobra I don't consider your reply to be off topic at all. It's good to know that consoles that aren't considered bleeding-edge can leverage the benefits of better display technology.
I just got my PS2 in September and haven't gone the component cable route yet. I've given up on trying to run widescreen while using S-Video, so maybe a component cable will be just the ticket.  icon_wink
