That has to be pleasant.  Congratulations sir!  Your car is now covered in raw sewage!  Yaaaayyyyy!!
It's a storm sewer, not the waste sewer.
Still nasty stuff, of course.

The city I live in has a combined stormflow-sewer system where runoff water in the stormflow system drives the sewer system. So if this area is the same, I guarantee you that a backup to that extend will be a wonderful concoction of sewage and storm runoff. These systems aren't too uncommon in areas where it rains a lot.

Some years back I was working on a GIS project to convert legacy data into a new mapping system for our city. When I was proofing map data, I found a section of the stormflow-sewer system called Canoe Creek. Sure enough some city engineers decided decades ago that a creek big enough to paddle a canoe down would be buried in pipes and used for the system. Lets you appreciate how much water can be running through these systems.

Phantom Dust without a doubt.
Unfortunately this title hasn't been made BC yet, so if you want to play it hold on to your original XBox. The online multiplay in it was a lot of fun, but I'm not sure if there's many still online as I traded my copy.

I like what's stated in this part of the review.

Quote
The Godfather is a great first step on Wii, as it uses more than 25 gestures, IR aiming, and has a ton of features above the original game in the form of new items, missions, gameplay modes (favors and blackmailing specifically), and RPG elements.

The RPG elements really interest me. I've been holding out from playing any of the other Godfather games, so I've been looking forward to this one.
I'll wait for a few more reviews, but I think I'm IN.

I started a WoW trial recently, and while I'm enjoying it, it's made me miss Asherons Call.  I played that for several years, and while there's no way I could go back to it now (just too many silly flaws and I need something newer now) I really miss the character development that game had.  Anyone here play that seriously enough to really understand the character development that might suggest some games coming out that adopt that style, rather than the rampant EQ style?  From what I've seen Turbine pretty much abandoned that idea with AC2, and now from what I hear LoTR as well.

I just started Vanguard, the character development seems quite good and other things about it remind of AC. Although the game reminds me more of DAoC. It was just released very recently so if you try it don't expect a perfect game; least not yet.

If you want real serious, complex character development and don't mind SciFi themed MMORPG's, try Anarchy Online. I guarantee you won't find a MMORPG with more complex character configuring. Just be aware that it's skills based as opposed to ability based.
7648  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Wanna try Vanguard? I have 20 trial keys. [all gone] on: March 15, 2007, 09:00:31 PM
I'm surprised that so many are getting such bad performance with this game. I ran it for the 1st time yesterday and got good results on my mid range PC: AMD64 3200+, 1 GB RAM, GeForce 7600GT w/256, SB Audigy 2.
I accidentally started out at 1920x1080 w/Balanced settings and was still averaging fps in the 20's; sometimes as low as 14 when near many NPC's.
When I realized the rez I was running I reset to 1280x720, increased aniso to 8x, set my aliasing out of game to QxAA and disabled simplified ground textures. I'm still averaging in the high 20's.

From what I've seen the biggest slow down comes near  multiples char's like NPC's. I should also note that  I was playing after 10pm PST on Morvalt -think that's what it's called- and I only ran into 1 other player, so perhaps that's why. If slow performance proves to be NPC and Player char. polys / textures, IMHO that something that can usually be optimized over time. Now if you're idea of good performance is 40+ fps...well I'm definitely not getting that.

Either one of the Castlevania games would be great. I can say FFVI is a very good recommendation even though I haven't played it; hey it's Final Fantasy.
If you're a fan of Tony Hawks games, American Sk8land can also be a fun way to waste away the hours. And If you come across a Wayport WiFi location you can even hook up for some online skater action.
And last but not least if adventure games are your thing, either of the Phoenix Wrights or Hotel Dusk are good bets.

Well I can tell you my son is going to be all over this. He's now trained multiple pokemons beyond the 100th level in Ruby, Green leaf and Fire Red. How he and his friends can keep playing these games over and over is either a real testament to how well they're designed or how addictive they are. If the VOIP can work through Internet WiFi this will be great when I'm away on business trips.

Looks like this is going to be a day 1 purchase as well as an additional DS; if I can find one. I'm sure I'm going to enjoy the odd play session with this game as well.

Nintendo knows what they are doing.  Clearly they are more concerned with protecting children from being exposed to the wrong elements while playing games online than making the experience intuative and robust for adults.

That's what I suspected was their motivation, but I couldn't find any links to back it up. I do seem to recall an article or interview some time ago reporting on Nintendo's sentiments in this regard.

Being a parent that owns a Wii I really don't feel this is necessary. But I also wouldn't hook up a Wii to the Internet in one of  my kid's room and then never play it myself.  And unfortunately I know a number of parents that would do just that.

The only positive spin I can put on any of this is that the service is being provided by a 3rd party. Therefore it should be easier for Nintendo to move to some other online system if they later choose to.

I'll disclose I've read nothing about the Wii other than Titles as they release them. Totally under a rock when it comes to Wii.

Is there more than one network multi-player enabled game at present? Are there games presently requiring separate codes?  Is this just a function of how GameSpy's networks going forward will have to implement rosters because Gamespy cannot engineer a way around Wii archetechture to allow rosters to be easily transferable by a GUI?  Did Nintendo know this supposed limitation before reaching agreements with Gamespy?  Would Nintendo be able to take Gamespy to school on how to get it done easier and show them how it's done?

Can I possibly ask more questions in one breath?

Whoah! How does your jaw feel after all that  icon_lol

It will be interesting to find out who's at the heart of this idiocy; GameSpy or Nintendo. Regardless, this really sucks and isn't the approach I was hoping Nintendo would take.
On the other hand I can't say I'm totally surprised as Nintendo has consistently downplayed the importance of online multiplay for years.

Enjoy browsing the dozen or so sites for the information you need.

Thanks for the reply Destructor. I must have missed those links before, but I'll be sure to check them out this evening. I found the lack of forums a bit odd too. I can understand it for a MMORPG that's in beta, but not something that's been released for over a month? Anyways, perhaps they have their reasons.

I really don't care where I get my info from just as long as I can eventually find it somewhere. And I must say, there's a helluva lot of good information in this thread alone.

Can anyone tell me what's the definite source for Vanguard info.  The Vanguard official website has very minimal info and from what I can see only a tech support forum. I'm hoping to start playing tonight, but really don't want to create a pooched / gimped character due to ignorance on my behalf.

In particular I'm looking for information on races, professions, crafting, adventuring and diplomacy. And more specifically what races align best with specific professions. I've played RPG's and MMORPGs enough to not want to go down the path of choosing the wrong race for the wrong profession.

Not necessarilly- you don't want much of a gap between announcement and release because as soon as it's announced, current sales of the 360 stop while everyone waits for the new iteration.

My thoughts exactly.
I'm definitely holding out until the price drop as it makes purchasing a 3 year replacement warranty much easier to stomach. My guess is that if there's a price drop, it will kick in as soon as there's indicators that surplus in the channel has cleared.

Ok,  ill just have to disagree then, I guess I just dont want sports fields to somehow be above the law, where someone could kill someone with no chance of legal reprecussions.

Noone is saying that every hard hit or injury on a sports field should end up in court, but it should most definately remain an option when needed.

After having watched the drama of public prosecutions of players twice now in Vancouver, quite frankly I'm sick of it. The politics of such prosecutions are IMHO very sickening. The Police Department milked them for all the brownie points they're worth and to some extent so did the Attorney General. I'm tired of all of the brown nosing to the "eliminate all aggressive contact in hockey" contingency that these 2 events afforded. It got to the point where it wasn't apparent what was worse; the lynch mob mentality of the anti-hockey crowd or the original violent action.

As I stated earlier I'd much rather have the league doing the prosecuting and setting the penalties. If the NHL proves to be  consistently inadequate at doing the job; well that's another matter.

On top of that, you have a duty as a professional player to uphold professionalism and sportsmanship. This guy should be banned permanently and then brought up on charges.

Which is why the NHL alone should prosecute him and hand him the penalty he deserves; much longer suspension. Simon obviously violated NHL codes of professionalism and sportmanship and the league should prosecute him accordingly. If the NHL decided to ban him permanently, I think it would be harsh but I could live with their decision.

For traditional sport games, the FIFA games are the best on the DS.
I played FIFA 06 through 5 seasons and enjoyed it. I've heard that FIFA 07 is a little bit better. No online WIFI in either version though.

For nontraditional sports game, I'd say Tony Hawks American Sk8tland is by far the the best. It also has WIFI online play.

I have mixed feelings about charging pro sports athletes for actions like this. On the 1 hand I'd expect any such action in public to be dealt with as assault and the offender to be prosecuted. On the other hand pro athletes in contact sports are expected to hit and be conditioned to take hits.  When you have that as a fundamental aspect of you sport there's no way some player won't eventually step outside the rules and make a foolish and dangerous hit. The only guarantee of avoiding this is to remove the contact element from Hockey; something I'm not in favour of.  So IMHO, because hockey has a fundamental element of contact and aggression in it, what happens on ice at the pro level should be prosecuted differently than what happens in public.

If we were talking a particularly nasty hit into the boards (Hatcher vs. Roenick for instance), I might agree with you. However, taking a full-on two-handed swing to the head is NOT a natural part of hockey, nor is it an extension of an activity that is. It's going above and beyond both the written and implied code of hockey to take a head-first leap into intentional assault and battery. Hang 'im high.

Well, for that matter fighting isn't a natural part of hockey either, but it happens. It happens because the game is physical and takes great skill and concentration, all of which sometimes leads to frustration and the flaring of tempers. If you use the argument of it not being natural and support criminal prosecution for such on ice offenses, then hockey players would be charged in court every time there's a fight. As much as I don't like fighting at hockey games, I definitely don't support an endless parade of court cases.

I'm not saying that Simons shouldn't get a very lengthy suspension for his actions -much more than he got in fact- but that he shouldn't be prosecuted in a public court of law for something he's done on the ice. The minute he does it off the ice away from his sport; yah by all means hang 'im high!

And don't forget you're also displaying that avatar to honour the great Isles of the Potvin and Trottier era. icon_wink thumbsup  Wish my beloved Canucks had such an era to remember.

If it'll  make you feel any better, I'll  figure out some way to create a Canucks avatar. It's going to be tough though as I'm very avatar creation challenged.   retard
