My kids will be taking over the consoles this weekend, which means they'll also be taking over the HDTV that everything connects to.
So many sessions of Lego SWars II, SSX Blur and Super Monkeyball Dlx. Hopefully a few sessions of SWars BF II and maybe I'll be lucky enough to get in a session of NWN2 Sunday night.  icon_wink
7642  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [XBox] Call of Duty 3 or Battlefield 2: MC - Which to get? on: March 23, 2007, 06:58:50 PM
I've noticed whenever I check the Major Nelson site for the top 10 most popular original XBox online games, that Battlefield 2:MC and Call of Duty 3 are usually on the list. I own almost all other games that are on the list except these 2 . I haven't played Battlefield since 1942 for the PC and I did play Call of Duty: BRO a bit on XBConnect. I enjoyed my online and  offline play time with both of these games.

I have a mid-range spec'd PC so I'm also considering these games PC equivalents if the offline and online experience is much better. I was hoping to let my son play them as well which is why I'm looking at the XBox games. It's a bummer that neither of these is BC to the 360, but I figure I'll just trade them in and buy the 360 equivalent when I eventually get my 360.

My question is; of the 2 of these games which game is the better game for offline play and which is the better for online play?
The other question I have is; are the PC equivalents so far superior that I really shouldn't be considering the XBox games?
7643  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Top 10 Hardest to Beat Console Games on: March 22, 2007, 11:37:48 PM
I didn't play enough of the games in the list to comment 1 way or another. I'm glad F-Zero GX is in the list in the top 5 because it was brutal to beat. And I agree that the 1st Ninja Gaiden for XBox should be in the list and ranked higher.

I also think that the Genma Onimusha for XBox should be in this list. I know it's recognized as a real challenge because all the gamers in the local video game stores and rental outlets are amazed that I beat it.  icon_wink

I really liked the game on the 360. So much so, I am thinking of picking up the Don Edition on the PS3.

Anyway, the Blackhand Edition on the Wii looks good. I just don't know about the graphics and controls for my own enjoyment. The core game though should be solid and Wii owners will be in for a treat with this game.

If you have a Wii Hetz you might want to reconsider this, since so far the PS3 version is being scored lower than the Wii by most reviewers. The general buzz amongst reviewers seems to be that the graphics in the The Don's Edition don't even come close to using the capabilities of the PS3.

For the past 2 years I've thought about taking my son to PAX. I'm in Vancouver so it's only about 2 hours drive. I'm about 90% sure that this year we're going to make it. I regret now not having gone in previous years because I now have the added cost of having to get my son a passport.

I had a question about about registration; is there a discount for early registration?
And if there is, what's the cut off date for early registration?

There is indeed a discount for early registration and I think it ends at the end of March.

OK good to know, thanks for the info Grue.
7646  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: 360 Headset/voice communications on: March 22, 2007, 01:18:49 PM
Now this is a situation where you need your PC near your 360 so it can host your vent or teamspeak connection. Then you need to find other players that can do the same; gives you the option of using the superior voice quality.

Not such an easy thing when using XBox Live. This is more common amongst the XBConnect crowd, since they often have their PC's near their XBox or 360 to host the XBC connection. Of course you do end up giving up a lot of the Live features when using XBC, but it  may be worth it for the better voice comm.

I re-rolled the other day and created a Half Elf Disciple on the RP server. And sure enough some of the stuttering and fps drops that other posters had talked about were there. So from my experience the performance issues seem to be area specific. I didn't experience these on the Orc and Goblin's home isle, but most definitely did in the Shang village.

I really like many of the elements of this game, but think I'm going to hold off purchasing until there's some further optimization.

Game is sitting at 75% ratings, and I have to say I haven't read any of the reviews other than IGN's, but I agree with them in that the Blackhand Controls make this game a lot of fun to play. Picked it up today and put some time into it, and I will definitely say that this game shows how well Motion Control can make a game better. You knock it for not being as pretty as the 360 version, but any reviewer doing that is retarded, and I think it would be hard to deny how much more enjoyable it is to actually punch the crap out of some poor Goombah.

Thanks for posting feeback on the game Tebunker. I typically don't care for these type of games, but the subject matter sells me on this one.  I've held off on purchasing any other versions of this game, so I'll be picking this up very soon; probably this weekend.   slywink thumbsup

I think we're arguing amongst masterpieces here. I don't have a 360, but I've recently thought about trying to track down a copy of SoTN to play on my PS2. I have no doubt it would be worth the effort and I think anyone with a 360 is going to be glad to get this game.

I'll just throw in my own 2 cents in here and say that Circle of the Moon and Aria of Sorrow running on my GameBoy player and being displayed on my Sony HDTV are true works of art. 2 of the best Castlevania games ever IMHO.

The Legacy of Darkness game on that list makes me snicker, it was definitely a bit of a stinker.  Roll Eyes
7651  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / GTA: Vice City - Controls? on: March 22, 2007, 05:57:05 AM
I picked up GTA:VC yesterday on a whim for $9. I have to admit that it's not my style of game but the quality of it's good enough that I figure I'll pick it up from time to time.

One thing I don't like about it are the controls which I have set to the standard setting; PC & mouse. Some  of the mappings make this combination very awkward and clumsy and some of the assignments don't seem to be remapable. I've noticed that there's a classic control setting which is supposed to be like the original PS2. I have an older Logitech dual axis controller with 10 buttons for my PC, but I'm not sure if this will work with the classic setting.

I was wondering if anyone here can help me out with this. My question is; can I use the classic setting with a controller like my logitech or do I need to find a PS2 -to- USB adaptor for my PS2 dual shock controller and use it?  icon_confused

That has to be pleasant.  Congratulations sir!  Your car is now covered in raw sewage!  Yaaaayyyyy!!
It's a storm sewer, not the waste sewer.
Still nasty stuff, of course.

The city I live in has a combined stormflow-sewer system where runoff water in the stormflow system drives the sewer system. So if this area is the same, I guarantee you that a backup to that extend will be a wonderful concoction of sewage and storm runoff. These systems aren't too uncommon in areas where it rains a lot.

Some years back I was working on a GIS project to convert legacy data into a new mapping system for our city. When I was proofing map data, I found a section of the stormflow-sewer system called Canoe Creek. Sure enough some city engineers decided decades ago that a creek big enough to paddle a canoe down would be buried in pipes and used for the system. Lets you appreciate how much water can be running through these systems.
I grew up in Colorado Springs, which is an odd place but interesting because it has publically owned utilities which are, apparently, some of the most advanced in the world. I'd always hear about people coming from around the world to look at our storm sewers. The city owns some cutting edge drills, and has one of the few, if not only, sewer rescue teams, which are prepared to enter the storm sewers to rescue people who are trapped in them.

I used to crawl around in there quite a bit when I was a kid, which I didn't realize then was a really dumb idea. But man, what fun!

Yup, definitely a famous neck of the woods for water engineering.
Colorado is also a famous area in the GIS world. I haven't worked in GIS for some years, but my brother in-law still does and the software that makes him 99.9 % of his bread & butter is manufactured in Colorado. I'm in the Pacific NW, so the kind of system I described is quite common due to constant consistent rainfall.

And hell yeah...what were you thinking crawling around that storm sewer system!   icon_biggrin
7654  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Want a 20gig PS3? Not at Best Buy. on: March 19, 2007, 12:12:53 PM
I've never seen a 20 GB unit in Canada since the launch, whether it be in local stores or online retailers. I could understand this if the 60 GB unit was still priced everywhere at 649.99, which is cheaper than in the US after you factor in the exchange rate. Unfortunately as many of you know, many Canadian retailers pushed the price up to 699.99 in January; believe it's still available at EB for 649.99.

I put this all down to the ineptness of Sony Canada's marketing. It's just ridiculous that they're not pushing the 20 GB unit, which when it was available was priced at 549.99.  When you compare the 20 GB unit to the 360 Premium (499.99), the 20 GB PS3 appears to be a better deal considering the inclusion of the Blu-ray player.  Just another example of how Sony is making foolish mistakes in multiple countries.

I agree, strange list.  Surely Diablo II gets on there somewhere.  And no love for the Thief games?

IMHO Diablo 1 belongs on the list more than Diablo II, but at least 1 of them anyways. I mean come on, Blizzard more or less pioneered the hack 'n' slash RPG with Diablo.

As time marches on and the history of gaming gets longer and deeper, I've noticed these lists tend to include more recent games at the expense of some older gems. I often wonder if the staff that make these lists up are getting younger and therefore just didn't play them. I must admit I'm always surprised when Ultima Underworld as well as Kings Quest aren't on these lists . Which brings me to the conclusion that anything less than a 50 game list are just too short.

Well, perhaps it is time for US to make a top 50 of all time list for PC?  What do you think?

I think it's a great idea if only to do justice to those older, forgotten gems.

The Godfather is a great first step on Wii, as it uses more than 25 gestures, IR aiming, and has a ton of features above the original game in the form of new items, missions, gameplay modes (favors and blackmailing specifically), and RPG elements.

The RPG elements really interest me. I've been holding out from playing any of the other Godfather games, so I've been looking forward to this one.

I just started Vanguard, the character development seems quite good and other things about it remind of AC. Although the game reminds me more of DAoC. It was just released very recently so if you try it don't expect a perfect game; least not yet.

If you want real serious, complex character development and don't mind SciFi themed MMORPG's, try Anarchy Online. I guarantee you won't find a MMORPG with more complex character configuring. Just be aware that it's skills based as opposed to ability based.

I'm surprised that so many are getting such bad performance with this game. I ran it for the 1st time yesterday and got good results on my mid range PC: AMD64 3200+, 1 GB RAM, GeForce 7600GT w/256, SB Audigy 2.
I accidentally started out at 1920x1080 w/Balanced settings and was still averaging fps in the 20's; sometimes as low as 14 when near many NPC's.
When I realized the rez I was running I reset to 1280x720, increased aniso to 8x, set my aliasing out of game to QxAA and disabled simplified ground textures. I'm still averaging in the high 20's.

From what I've seen the biggest slow down comes near  multiples char's like NPC's. I should also note that  I was playing after 10pm PST on Morvalt -think that's what it's called- and I only ran into 1 other player, so perhaps that's why. If slow performance proves to be NPC and Player char. polys / textures, IMHO that something that can usually be optimized over time. Now if you're idea of good performance is 40+ fps...well I'm definitely not getting that.

Either one of the Castlevania games would be great. I can say FFVI is a very good recommendation even though I haven't played it; hey it's Final Fantasy.
If you're a fan of Tony Hawks games, American Sk8land can also be a fun way to waste away the hours. And If you come across a Wayport WiFi location you can even hook up for some online skater action.
And last but not least if adventure games are your thing, either of the Phoenix Wrights or Hotel Dusk are good bets.

Nintendo knows what they are doing.  Clearly they are more concerned with protecting children from being exposed to the wrong elements while playing games online than making the experience intuative and robust for adults.

That's what I suspected was their motivation, but I couldn't find any links to back it up. I do seem to recall an article or interview some time ago reporting on Nintendo's sentiments in this regard.

Being a parent that owns a Wii I really don't feel this is necessary. But I also wouldn't hook up a Wii to the Internet in one of  my kid's room and then never play it myself.  And unfortunately I know a number of parents that would do just that.

The only positive spin I can put on any of this is that the service is being provided by a 3rd party. Therefore it should be easier for Nintendo to move to some other online system if they later choose to.

I'll disclose I've read nothing about the Wii other than Titles as they release them. Totally under a rock when it comes to Wii.

Is there more than one network multi-player enabled game at present? Are there games presently requiring separate codes?  Is this just a function of how GameSpy's networks going forward will have to implement rosters because Gamespy cannot engineer a way around Wii archetechture to allow rosters to be easily transferable by a GUI?  Did Nintendo know this supposed limitation before reaching agreements with Gamespy?  Would Nintendo be able to take Gamespy to school on how to get it done easier and show them how it's done?

Can I possibly ask more questions in one breath?

It will be interesting to find out who's at the heart of this idiocy; GameSpy or Nintendo. Regardless, this really sucks and isn't the approach I was hoping Nintendo would take.

Enjoy browsing the dozen or so sites for the information you need.

Thanks for the reply Destructor. I must have missed those links before, but I'll be sure to check them out this evening. I found the lack of forums a bit odd too. I really don't care where I get my info from just as long as I can eventually find it somewhere. And I must say, there's a helluva lot of good information in this thread alone.

Can anyone tell me what's the definite source for Vanguard info.  The Vanguard official website has very minimal info and from what I can see only a tech support forum. I'm hoping to start playing tonight, but really don't want to create a pooched / gimped character due to ignorance on my behalf.

In particular I'm looking for information on races, professions, crafting, adventuring and diplomacy. And more specifically what races align best with specific professions. I've played RPG's and MMORPGs enough to not want to go down the path of choosing the wrong race for the wrong profession.

No more keys left, guys.

I'm not sure how big the download is, but installed it's around 17 gigs.

OK thanks for letting me know guys. Oh well all in good time, sounds like the game should be ready when I get home from work today. smile
Many thanks again Siege for sending me the trial key.

Review was encouraging.

Is anyone buying a golf game (or anything else on the Wii) for the graphics?

I agree,  graphics are by no means a show stopper for a golf game.

I'd like to try it Siege, but can you download the client?
I sent you a PM.

Yah, I was downloading for 4 hours tonight, had to come in to work, when I left it said ~2 hours left.

go to :

Thanks siege.
Thats good. The beta took like 20 hours to download at times. I played itlike 4 hours. Bad investment of time biggrin

I started the download last night and the overall progress bar is now full, but it's still downloading files. So far it's already downloaded roughly 12GB.

How big is the complete download?
