I may have noticed a preview or 2 for this last year -Secrets of the Ark: A Broken Sword Game- but it defintely released under my radar. From what I've read it sounds like yet another fine adventure in the Broken Sword series. So far it's been getting some decent reviews; 7.7 at GameSpot.

Has anyone played this game yet?

Bah, Halo 2 is one of the best looking games on Xbox IMO and Halo was pretty much top of the heap when it was released.

Indeed, they were gorgeous high quality productions.  SO much so, top of the order list for the kids Xbox360 was the Halo-Triple-Pack before it gets impossible to find.  Halo, Halo2, Halo2-Map Pack are infinitely playable - even today!

Good choice, both are excellent games; you can't go wrong with either. I thought the gameplay was better paced in the 1st and the graphics were slightly better in the 2nd. Either way, they were definitely 2 of the best looking games on the XBox.

Anyways... once noctum wars came out AO took a big nosedive as far as I can tell...

The classic is free... nothing else right?

I haven't played for a while, but I know that free play for the classic client was extended. I seemed to recall receiving an email some time back stating that Notum Wars was now also included in the free play client. I just grabbed this quote on the free play info page:

Quote
*You can play free of charge until January 15th 2008. Should Funcom deem that server load or other unforeseen events will lessen the experience for paying subscribers the offer will be terminated at our discretion. The free version does not include access to any of the three expansion packs. Should you wish to upgrade to any of the expansion packs monthly subscription and client fees will be added

Interesting as there's now 4 expansion packs which might confirm my recollection that Notum Wars is now part of the classic client. I'd agree that Notum Wars wasn't much of an expansion, although I did like the custom voice macroing feature; too bad more people didn't use it. BTW I never got booted due to high server load when I played the free client.  icon_wink

Anyways IMHO until you've played the Shadowlands expansion you really haven't experienced all that AO has to offer; it's that good. It also makes it easier to level up your toon since it gives you access to perks.

Their 3 independent review system is absolutely useless IMHO. I mean how useful is it to the reader to be presented with 3 different rankings with as much as 45% spread between them!?

Cases in point:

Quote
Shining Force Exa: 6, 7, 4
One reviewer thinks it's a good game while another thinks it's regurgitated dog food!

Quote
After Burner: Black Falcon: 6.5, 2, 5.5

The numbers themselves mean nothing, but if you read the reviews I'd imagine you can see why one was rated higher than the other.  Three opinions are better than one, given they are well reasoned.

*note that I have no idea if they are well reasoned or not, I've not read EGM in 5 years or so.

gellar

The text reviews are the problem though. I admittedly also haven't picked up a copy of EGM for some time; too poor a publication for the effort IMHO. From what I reacall only 1 of the reviewers are given any amount of printed space. The other 2 reviewers only give very brief paragraphs that aren't really informative. They certainly don't say enough to explain a very low score, that's for sure.

And EGM is well known to be extremely bias. I've seen messages in forums for years on many sites with people stating this. I also seem to recall a minor conflict of interest scandal involving EGM and it's onwers from a few years back, but I'm sure I'd never be able to find the link.

I have no hope for most sci-fi games....

simply put, they are all done poorly and they just hope since the genre has never been done well they  might get the fanboty base to check the game out...

it's not hard to do a bad mmorpg, it's quite hard to do a good one...  maybe they will steal the WoW blueprint for ease of use and simplicity while having a semi-decent top end and we'll get lucky, but my guess is, they worry more about keeping people for a month or two then keeping them for years.

Well I beg to differ with you on this; Anarchy Online is a very good sci-fi MMORPG. It may not be as easy as WoW -which is too easy IMHO- and it may error on the side of difficulty, but it's still a good RPG. It's Definitely the deepest MMORGP currently out there; sci-fi or fantasy theme based. And it's free to play!

Anyhow...back on topic. It's great to see another Warhammer MMORPG coming online. I'm actually more interested the game Mythic's working on as I'm familiar with their approach having played DAoC for some time. The more Warhammer the merrier, so this is good news.

DAoC does that as well. Forgot about that (and didn't spend too much time with it).

DAoC does castle sieges better than any other MMORPG. The castle sieges in the mid game (lvl 20 - 24) and the end game (lvl 50+) are just amazing. I've done all night sieges on occassions and they've definitely been some of the best gaming exepriences I've ever had.

I still have an active account on the Tintagel (RP) server cluster so if anyone here is planning on giving it a try let me know.

After 2 weeks of playing back -to- back sessions of PEWE 2007 (PS2) and FIFA 07 (XBox) I finally made my choice...neither.
I decided instead to buy a preowned copy of WE 9 (XBox) which as it turns out is a very rare find in my city; no doubt a positive indicator. If team rosters are out of date it isn't much of an issue for me, since as I stated before I'm only a casual football fan.

When pitting PEWE 2007 against FIFA 07, I was more impressed with the gameplay in PEWE, but preferred the presentation in FIFA 07. But not by as much of a margin as I would have thought as I felt some of the graphics in PEWE were actually better. One thing I need to state right away; there's absolutely no way FIFA 07 is playable in 720p!
I can't see why this was included as the increased resolution makes the game perform far too sluggishly. FIFA 07 does however still look great in 480p widescreen. When considering all graphical aspects and overall presentation for all 3 games, I actually preferred WE 9 in the end.

I definitely prefer the dual-shock shoulder buttons in PEWE PS2 for special controls to the black and white buttons in WE 9. Since I'm already using these buttons in other XBox sports games, I felt I could overcome the increase in awkwardness. I preferred the gameplay and controls in both WE's over FIFA 07 and felt the training modules in both WE's were superior; important for a casual fan and player.

Of course my decision was made all that much easier by the $18 price tag for WE 9.  icon_wink

For the past 3 years, Iíve purchased at least 1-2 games a month from them.  However, over the past year since their manager left, they have gone steadily downhill.  Theyíve become rude, dismissive, overly pushy with pre-orders, and I basically just donít like going there anymore.

We don't have GameStop here in Canada, but what you state above more or less describes recent experiences I've had at a number of EB outlets in my city.

Recently I tried to cash in on a preorder of LOZ:TP. I unfortunately had misplaced my receipt and my preorder was missing from their computer; big surprise as I swear it was 2 years ago that I placed it. When the sales agent talked with the Manager the response was, I couldn't possibly have preordered since they didn't start taking them until 2006.  retard

Well...guess that manager was to ignorant to know of the many, many, many  delays with LOZ:TP. To make matters worse one of his own agents started arguing that they'd been taking preorders since 2005. No go, my preorder didn't exist as far as he was concerned.

Eventually I found my receipt dated sometime in 2005 and took it to the manager. He then arrogantly and rudely stated that it wouldn't have mattered because it was for the GC version and I wanted the Wii version. I know for a fact that when I preordered the Wii version hadn't even been announced!   mad

This got me thinking. Now that GameStop owns EB maybe there's a conspiracy to secretly implement their 'treat the customer as crap' policy on a global basis.  Roll Eyes

I haven't played LoI, but I did play Curse of Darkness for the XBox. I've heard that the 2 games are quite similar and that the PS2 CoD used an enhanced LoI engine.
Although I did find the graphics to be very nice in CoD the gameplay was too repetitive. I've heard the same critisism from friends that played LoI, but since I made it through CoD I might eventually give it a try.

Castlevania Circle of the Moon, Aria of Sorrow and Dawn of Sorrow; now those are games I'd place on a pedestal beside God of War.  icon_wink thumbsup
7668  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: I need Wii direction! on: March 01, 2007, 07:46:28 PM
Out of your list I've owned the following games :

DragonballZ: Budokai Tenkaichi 2
SSX Blur
Trauma Center: Second Opinion
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

All 4 of these games are worth owning with LOZ: TP by far being the best; IMHO an AAA title. It's also a long 1 player action-adventure game, so in other words your wife may not like it.

If you played Trauma Center on the DS, the Wii game is quite similar, so you might want to pass on it. Otherwise it's an excellent, one of a kind game and your wife will probably enjoy it.

DBZ:BT2 is IMHO one of the most underrated games on the Wii. It has by far one of the best implementations of the Wii controls and has a helluva lot of content. Some might be put off by the content, it will definitely appeal more to fans of the DBZ series or anime in general. It's also a fighting game with an adventure component, so you'll need to enjoy fighting games to appreciate it. The more advanced moves take some time to master and may be difficult for someone new to the Wii.

SSX Blur is also a good game, but as you'll note by the current review thread in this forum, it's controls definitely require some patience and practice. It may be difficult for a novice Wii player, but really shouldn't be a problem for anyone who's mastered Wii sports.

I still haven't played WarioWare yet...the shame. But from all I've heard it's an excellent game.

A set of wavebird controllers are a must have IMHO if you plan on playing GC or VC games. Just be aware that there's no rumble capability in them. You'll also need a GC memory card.

Hmm, FWIW, I just replayed TLJ on my system under XP last year (import CD version) without issue.

I'm not surprised, as 1 of my friends managed to get my set of install CD-ROMS to work on their WinXP desktop. Other friends encountered the same problem I had; installation would never complete. I suspected the problem I and my friends had was related to the type of DVD drive we had. I did some searching on the Funcom forums and found other people that had similar problems, but the issues seemed to be more common with the original NA release CD-ROMs.
I've never had a problem like this on my gaming rig with any other legacy games....go figure.

I played both Dreamfall games and enjoyed them very much. The 1st game came out quite some time ago; think it was 1999. Of the 2 the 1st game was much longer and better. I played the XBox version of the 2nd game so perhaps it would have been better on PC.

Well I guess how you read the initial article in this thread very much depends on your personal bent. For the converted, current owners of 360's it's just Microsoft being clever at praising Nintendo at the expense of Sony. Whereas I read it as an omission from Mirosoft that they're not reaching the casual gamer and they better do something about it fast.

I seem to be at odds with a number of forum members with the state of the 360.

Where I say; hardware backward compatibility for the 360 is nonexistent.
Others say; What...you actually liked your XBox S-Controller and that hideous looking component cable?

Where I say; software backward compatibility for the 360 is lacking.
Others say; get over it and move on to newer games and doesn't that European BC for the PS3 suck!
NOTE: The minute someone says my XBox games will make nice coasters and those green cases are terrific for storing PC games, I'll freak.

Where I say; the the 360 price is too high.
Others say; Yeah but the PS3 costs way more!

Where I say; the manufacturing and reliability of the 360 is an issue.
Others say; What's your problem, do you or don't you want to play the games?

Where I say; I'm holding out for the next 360 SKU because it will benefit from better manufacturing.
Others say; Naah...there'll probably be just as many issues with it cause it'll be  new,  but I hear the red lights on it will be brighter and of a much nicer hue.

Sorry...just had to interject some humor into all of this; admittedly sarcastic humor.  biggrin

After reading the more recent posts in this thread I'm altering my original opinion.

EVERY SENIOR EXECUTIVE AT SONY MUST GO!!!
BUT KRAZY KEN MUST GO 1ST!!!   icon_lol

Based on this quote from the original news article that someone else already pointed out in a earlier post, I'd say Microsoft needs to issue a price drop sooner than that.

Why?  The 360 has outsold the PS3 in each of the last 2 months. I don't see any need for a price drop right now.  I don't think the Wii factors into Microsoft's decision making at all.  They are primarily concerned with Sony.

Huh...didn't you read the 1st paragraph from the article that initially started this thread?

Xbox Microsoft boss Peter Moore has hinted at a change in strategy for Xbox 360 going into 2007, to compete with the mainstream appeal of Nintendo's fun-focused Wii.

Bill Gates made similar comments last month in a Japanese  interview, stating that Microsoft now saw Nintendo as their main competition.
I agree that the roughly 300K sales that the 360 did last month in NA was by no means bad. But when you consider that sales have been reported as sluggish in Europe and almost nonexistent in Japan the 360 isn't exactly pulling away from the competition. They may not even be keeping pace.

If I were Microsoft I would have a 360 price drop in October to coincide with the release of GTA4 and a month before Halo 3 comes out.

Based on this quote from the original news article that someone else already pointed out in a earlier post, I'd say Microsoft needs to issue a price drop sooner than that.

"But we've got a few tricks up our sleeve as well to be able to do that. It's not something that we're going to be shy about, and it's not something that we're not painfully aware of that needs to be changed by this holiday. That has been the strategy all along, and we'll be making some more announcements in the coming month or two."

I for one aren't going to be purchasing a 360 before a price drop. As it stands, due to the unreliability of the finished product, I'm going to have to purchase an additional 3 year replacement warranty. And based on what the current price point is for the Pro that means an extra $89!  mad

I can't see spending $50 on a chance of enjoying it though. Perhaps I should try renting it.

I wish, just wish it was possible to rent Wii games in my city. Other than the 2 times I was able to rent Red Steel and Marvel: UA the only games I've seen in anywhere are games like Monster 4x4, Rampage and Happy Feet. Uh hmm...yeah, no thanks! It seems that in my area, renting Wii games means purchasing and then trading in for credit at EB!   eek

Anyhow...from my memories of SSX Tricky, 1/2 the fun my kids had with it was just racing each other and seeing who got to the bottom 1st with a few tricks along the way. And from what I've gathered from the few review I've read, the actual racing control with the nunchuk is quite good. Since renting will be impossible in my area I'll probably just purchase it so my kids can get in some 1 vs 1 races and I can get the thrill of frustration from tackling uber tricks.   smirk
