Was Star Fox 64 always this...dark? Either my memories are fuzzy, or my TV doesn't like playing N64 games for whatever reason. Although, I do tend to have to turn up the default brightness/contrast on most any game nowadays...

It's looking fine on my HDTV, but the game's none the less quite dark. I remember having to fiddle with contrast and brightness on my old JVC SDTV for the N64 version. I also remember that it did look significantly better when I finally got my N64 connected via S-Video.

No.

No, but a lot of the screenshots and graphical "features" they are highlighting require DX10 (which for now still requires Vista).  It will probably still look fantastic on DX9 and XP but you will miss out on some (no idea how much or how little this early).

Cool, thanks ericb and Siege for letting me know. I'm not too concerned about running with bleeding edge graphics as in my experience Funcom's very good at application scalability. It'll be interesting to see just how good, or bad, it looks on a mid-spec PC. I could see them giving preference to Vista/DirectX10 beta testers as there's likely to be less of them that sign up; might prevent me from getting accepted.

Anyhow...I'll sign up for the beta tonight.

I'd like to signup since having played Anarchy Online for a few years I'd consider myself a fan of Funcom's MMORPGs. I seem to recall that this game requires DirectX 10 and Vista, both of which I don't have and won't have anytime soon.

The core unit has been selling for the equivalent of that price in Canada for quite some time; 199.99 CDN. I was hoping for a further price drop, but maybe I'll have to wait longer if it's only dropping to that price level in the US now.
What was the previous US price for the PSP core?

OMFG Star Fox 64, unbelievable!!
I can't believe we've gotten Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time and Star Fox 64 within almost the 1st 4 months of the Wii's release. I'll definitely be downloading this game. I've played it many times before but I'm up for it again, besides my son and daughter have never played it. No doubt my son will smoke me in mplay as my nephew did before him.

I agree with others that it's pretty cheesy that they're charging $6 for the NES version of TMNT. I have no illusions that this is a shamless, direct cash in on the recent movie.

I have far more gamecube games than I do PS2 games. I don't own an Xbox so I figured I wouldn't bother mentioning it. I do still think the PS2 is awesome.

I think Nintendo made the right call by making a radically different machine than the PS360. And, it is hard to argue that right now it's working for them in a big way. I too worry about it's long term staying power.

My XBox library and GameCube library are similar in size, with a slight edge to XBox. However the titles I have in my Cube library are constant and I'll likely never part with them, whereas  my XBox titles change frequently. I've only had a PS2 for a short while so my library is still small, but growing fast.

I have concerns about the long term longevity of the Wii as well. If Wii sales remain consistent throughout 2007, I think some 3rd parties will announce and deliver some AAA titles in 2008 and 2009; titles produced by top / 1st line dev teams. As much as I'd like to see the Wii garner a huge library, I really don't expect to be playing many new 3rd party titles on it after 2009; mostly due to it's modest technical specs.

I've often wondered if Nintendo might break with tradition this console general and release a new system inside of their standard 5 year life cycle.

I think most 3rd parties feel they aren't going to compete with Nintendo's stuff so they don't even try, just do mostly cheap port jobs.

Yup, I couldn't agree more; Nintendo is their worst enemy for garnering 3rd party support. No other company has as many titles in the top 100 all-time ranked games. This must definitely be an intimating factor when 3rd parties consider developing a title for a Nintendo console.

It just always amazes me how much the 3rd party companies are in denial about doing these cheap ports. I remember the CEO of THQ publicly tearing a strip of Nintendo in late 2003 because their games didn't sell well on the GameCube. If you look at what titles THQ delivered to the Cube in 2001 - 2003 they were most part just pure and utter crap.  Someone needs to call these 3rd parties to the floor.

7609  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [PS2] Which Ratchet and Clank Game to Get? on: March 31, 2007, 10:18:41 PM
I noticed that Besbuy.ca has a 2 game for $35 CDN promotion on select PS2 game. I've already decided that I'll be getting Sly 3 as 1 of the games. The promotion includes 2 of the Ratchet and Clank games; Deadlocked and Up Your Arsenal. I'm undecided on which in this series to get.
Part of my consideration in the games I'm choosing is whether they have co-op play, as I currently have very few for the PS2.  My son really likes co-op play and we've played through our XBox and Cube games that support it multiple times. I know that Deadlocked has co-op play and that Up Your Arsenal doesn't, but I'm also aware that Up Your Arsenal is a much higher ranked game.

My questions are:
Is Up Your Arsenal that much better than Deadlocked?
Is the co-op play in Deadlocked any good?

Any feedback anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

If there's only one piece of advice that I could give to the managers of third party companies, it would be that a lot of times it seems that when they're putting games out on Nintendo hardware, those games are being developed by their third-string team or their fourth-string team. Maybe that's because they see those products as being unique projects or somewhat smaller-scale projects. But when Nintendo puts out a title that is designed to really support and sell its hardware, that title is always developed by one of our number one teams. And so I think that when it comes to the question of trying to compete with our software, I would really like to see the parties try to do that with their number one teams rather than with the third- or fourth-string teams. [Laughs.]

Thanks for the info Tebunker, I'll definitely check out that blog.

I'm glad Miyamoto made these comments. I'd really like to see Miyamoto and Reggie Fils-Ami verbally lambaste 3rd parties for the poor effort they've giving to Wii game development. Of course we'll never see it as Nintendo has always had to walk a thin, diplomatic line with it's 3rd party money making opportunists support.

Out of all of the 3rd parties Ubisoft just takes the cake. Take Farcry for the Wii as a case in point. It was developed by their award winning studio that brought us Splinter Cell, but by their bottom dwelling least skilled dev team. Way to go Ubi, here's hoping you didn't make a cent on that game!

What you just wrote sounds just like a 360 fanboys pipe dream....oh wait, it is!  icon_wink

Why would you be so surprised? The PS3 is the only system with a hard drive standard. It makes perfect sense for a PC game to be ported to it.

Hetz, for Christs sake give it a rest. If you read any of my posts for the last few months you'd know that I'm anything but a 360 fanboy. I don't even own one and I frequently criticize it in this forum; albeit constructive criticisms. Go ahead and call me a Nintendo fanboy if you like, but for Pete's sake not a 360 fanboy.

Trust me when I say that there's legions of fans of Biowares' PC titles that would have nothing to do with Bioware ever again if they ported Dragon Age to the PS3 or any other console for that matter. I've read the posts of this contingency with amusement for the past few years. They have far more of a chip off their shoulder about being neglected by Bioware than you do about a Bioware game coming to the PS3. Personally I think it would be great if a game like DA made it to the PS3, but I don't think we'll see it happen as Bioware is blasted by it's PC fans on a daily basis.

On another note, I wouldn't be surprised if Bioware releases some other RPG for the PS3, just not DA. But hell, maybe Bioware's had enough of the PC fanclubs bitching and are starting to get tough; anythings possible. I admit to being a bit harsh in calling EGM staff members PS3 fanboys but my comment stems from my complete lack of respect for their publication. I can't recall reading a worse gaming publication ever, so I'm always surprised when you quote it.

Bioware is also partially using DA to appease the Bioware PC fanbase, which has been very vocal in crying foul over the lack of new PC releases. I could never understand their arguments for the most part, but their appears to be many that are adamant that the PC is the only viable RPG platform.
Of course Bioware could just ignore them, but for the fact that sales of BG II and NWN earned them a fair chunk of cash while Jade Empire (XBox) earned them very little.

All the casual gamer is going to read from the announcement is that there's another console with a price tag in the extreme echelon that the PS3 now inhabits.

I'll wager that come year end M$ is going to regret this when they look at their overall sales. I had been fully expecting Wii sales to dip significantly in the 3rd quarter, but I'll bet this announcement helps Nintendo maintain consistent numbers. Trust M$ to get sucked into a feature war with Sony; it's as if they think the console game is another version of M$ Office Suite vs Corel Office Suite.

In regards to the rumours that the core will be cancelled, it's interesting to note that Future Shop has dropped the price of the 360 core to $349 CDN for the next week. I can only speculate as to whether they're attempting to clear out last remaining stock or to combat negative impact from the Elite announcement.

The most absurd thing about this is that the "Holding Back Supply" myth is being perpetrated again except it's by Gamestop/EB this time.  Any other retailers taking this position?  I don't see any.  Gamestop/EB screwed themselves on Wii supply by force bundling them at such a high price, and even then, they couldn't keep them in stock.  Supply and Demand, except Demand far exceeded the ability to Supply in this case.

This is not true.

There was no bundling of the Wii or the PS3 or the 360 in the United States. I don't know about Canada...it's possible that they tried it there on some basis, but I will not sit idly by while people continue to perpetrate such blatant generalizations.

Now, the dotcoms *did* do bundles on the Wii, but the brick and mortar stores absolutely did not.

My understanding is that only the initial preordered Wii's were sold in bundles by EB Canada. All other sales since have been sold as separate units, accessories, games etc.

The intention to sell in bundles is possibly the reason EB Canada got less launch day Wiis from Nintendo.

So you think 40% of 360 owners have ZERO XBOX Live accounts? Not sure I can agree with that.

What's broadband penetration in households right now, especially worldwide?  I'd bet that far more than half of all 360s sold have never been connected to the Internet.

Bah, doubtful. 360 owners are probably MUCH MORE likely to have broadband, considering that PS3 and 360 owners are probably some of the more tech savvy consumers out there. Of the  8 or so people I personally know with 360's, all of them are on XBL. I think it's much higher than you guys think, same for the PS3.

I doubt gold account ownership is that high at all. As an example I work for a software company in which virtually every employee has broadband in their home. In our company 8 staff members own 360's and 6 own -myself included-  original XBoxes. Of the 360 owners 2 don't don't have their 360 connected to the Internet at all, 1 has Live! gold and the other 5 have Live! silver. Of the original XBox owners 4 have Live! and 2 don't. The 6 XBox owners have XBConnect accounts and have used the XBC service.

Uh, that isn't making any sense. I can see to a degree how people don't like some charges, namely the MMO charges, which are quite similar. MMO charges seem too high for me, but I can totally see what they are being us for. At the same time, Xbox Live charges a lot less then most MMOs and offers a lot more. You've got a persistant chat, video, friends list, gamer score, auto updating, content-adding, hassle free system, which overs most of its features for free. For the few Gold-enabled services, they're mainly covering the costs of the huge database of information they're handling with little trouble to the end year..

I hear what you're saying and I agree Live Gold is a good service for $50, but being an original XBox owner I only get some of those features. Despite having a console with a 10GB hd with lots of free space to store a system udpdate that could give me the equivalent of Live Gold features, Microsoft has decided I don't get them. And I still pay $60 CDN a year to use the service.

What Microsoft has instead decided is that I can fork out the $500 CDN for a 360, an extra 90 for a replacement warranty due to their inability to deliver reliable quality and still continue to pay my 60 for Live. They expect me to pay this even though the online games I'd mostly want to play are still original XBox games.
Which makes me want to utter the comment; fuck you Microsoft!

I took my ShadowBlade to lvl 50 +, Warrior to lvl 45, Hunter to lvl 45, Healer to lvl 21 and a Shaman to lvl 21. Also reached Grand Master Fletcher with my Hunter, which was an exercise in insanity. It was time to move on so I've been trying out other MMORPG's.

If you want to find out about server populations you can go to the Camelot Herald site http://www.camelotherald.com where you can view the different server populations in the right frame.
At this point in time, I'd sadly not recommend the RP servers as there's very few players below lvl 21. If you have the patience to slog it out to that level -much easier since Catacombs content introduction- you'll find some excellent players and guilds and ever raging war in Thidranki. smile

Knowing Microsoft Canada, they'll double the additional $80 and try to justify it by throwing in a game that everyone knows costs them $10 to include. I fully expect this to debut on the CDN market with a $650 price tag. And no doubt Microsoft Canada Will jump up and down hollering hey it's cheaper than the PS3!

But the assertion is that they are holding a large supply of Wii's and are going to flood the market in April to keep their investors happy?  You guys don't think the investors are happy right now?  I guess you guys also assume that the Wii is going to stall sales-wise soon?  I don't think they are doing it simply because I don't think they have recovered from the initial sales.  I don't think they have enough stock to even stockpile for their April quarter.

As I stated in a earlier reply, it's not so much a witholding of current supply as it is deciding not to bump up production; i.e they probably don't have some secret warehouse stocked with Wii's. Nintendo stated a few months back that they were ready to increase production before quarter end, but that appears to not have occurred.

The 2nd quarter is often lower for console sales than the 1st and always lower than the 4th, whereas the 3rd is the lowest. Nintendo's in a unique position to buck the trend by not increasing production until these quarters and therefore having a supply and consumer demand that will continue to drive high sales.

As you've stated there's a risk to this approach if in fact the sales would have been very high anyways. In which case Nintendo ends up selling less consoles than they potentially could have by year end. It's worth the risk for Nintendo because shareholders and stock analysts tend to gauge and rate publicly traded companies on a quarterly basis; avoiding a downward trend in a quarter is the key thing.

Quite frankly the whole proposition of gamers getting incensed about this sort of thing is IMHO ridiculous. The console manufacturers are really the only ones to gain from exclusives. It may be an issue if multi-platform compromised quality, but Capcom made this a non-issue when they ported RE4 to the PS2 with minimal degradation in graphics quality.

The irony of this whole situation is that Capcom, with the success of the Wii, is probably now kicking themselves for not having the favourable relationship they previously enjoyed with Nintendo. When they took RE4 out of exclusively they seriously soured the relationship, and I've read that they aren't being offered license discounts/perks from Nintendo anymore. Whether the playstation fanboys like it or not, Capcom has to now max their multiplatform options if they're to maintain a healthy existence.

Nintendo more than likely recognized that they had a better chance of selling more units by supplying other stores that were not "Force Bundling" the Wii with all kinds of other stuff to inflate the price than they did with EB/Gamestop and others who did this.

This definitely appears to have been the case in at least my city in Canada as each EB store got a max of 15 units and yes, they did "force bundle" them. Senior management at EB apparently assured store managers that they weren't being short changed by Nintendo and that other retailers that had taken "unofficially sanctioned by Nintendo" pre-orders wouldn't have their supply honored. I tried to tell my favorite local EB Manager that this just wasn't true, which I knew to be the case since a friend of mine manages a Toys R Us store. As it turned out, Toys R Us stores got all of the 60 units they pre-sold and Walmarts got 45 - 60 units. There are more EB locations in my city but even if you add up all their numbers, they still got less units.

I think a lot of this goes to previous gen loyalty and corporate attitude and mentality. Just a year or 2 ago you couldn't walk into an EB store in my area and not have some salesperson make unsolicited, negative comments about the Cube. And Toys R Us and various other franchises sold far more GameCubes per capita than EB. Nintendo appears to have rewarded these franchises and somewhat shafted EB.

it gets a 7.0 from wii.ign.com

Medal of Honor Vanguard was clearly designed for PlayStation 2 and upgraded for Wii. Games developed in this manner have a tendency to show barely-tweaked visuals and tacked on controls, but Vanguard looks notably sharper and plays significantly better on Nintendo's system. I've scored it lower than our sister site, though, because Wii is simply capable of so much more. Vanguard arrives on PS2 at the end of its life cycle, but it comes to Wii at the beginning and it barely scratches the surface of what's really possible.

What the freck? Scored it lower because of some missed potential? Am I a weird person for thinking that a good game should be called a good game regardless of "missed potential"? Baffling. Way to go IGN, you sure showed EA, you sure sent them a message you dolts. God, I am starting to hate every game media "journalist" site in creation, present company excluded because we tend to not pull bullshit out of our asses like that.

Wanted to come back and note, I don't really care about Vanguard, or the actual review score, but I am bothered at the choice of platform to air some silly grievance with EA.

I read the review and yes IMO the article was written from a very biased perspective. The reviewer constantly makes references to Call of Duty 3 throughout the review and for the most part comments that MOH:V is superior. However when all is said and done they actually scored it lower.

The reviewer continually praises the graphics over COD3 yet gives it the exact same ranking; 7. They did mention that it doesn't maintain as steady and a high a frame rate, but still gives the overall impression that the graphics are superior to COD3. Based on their comments and the rating they gave COD3, I would have expected an 8. Secondly, the replay is ranked lower than what COD3 was given, yet COD3 had no multiplay whatsoever. They make the comment that it doesn't have online, but also mention that the spit screen multiplay is quite good. I would have expected a 7 for this category.

I can understand how a reviewer could interject some personal bias or tilt into their game review, but this review seems to go out of it's way to arrive at a lower score. The proof will be in the pudding when I play MOH:V myself, but from what I read in this review the game sounds more like an 8 out of 10 as opposed to a 7.

I remember around the end of January Reggie Fils-Amis (probably spelt his name wrong) announcing that they were boosting production levels beginning in March to 1 million or more Wii's / month. From what Gamestop is saying, this didn't occur.

My only guess as to why they might not have done this, is possibly by holding off until April they could optimize manufacturing and be more cost effective. One thing you can always count on Nintendo for is to find a way to make more money.

Yeah, DaoC has them. Things I can think of off the top of my head they have.

Battering rams
Ballista (ground and mounted on keep towers)
Catapults (ground and mounted on keep towers, can use different types of ammo)
Trebucets
Boiling oil
Destructable (and repairable) walls
fix ladders that allow stealthers to get into castle

The castles come in various sizes from small towers to large keeps with multiple gates as well as outlying towers (which can be taken over independatly of the main keep and used to assault it). The side that owns the castle can spend PvP points to upgrade the keep (which are visible) as well as add NPC guards of various types. To take a keep the enemy has to kill the NPC keep lord which is rather powerful at which point the castle changes hands.

And add to all this some spectacular settings to strategically situate the keeps. I particularly liked Thidranki with it's 3 bridge access points; just loved camping the enemy bridges with my invisible Midgard ShadowBlade. slywink

The 1974 Lancia Stratos, dang I loved that car in Rally Trophy!   thumbsup

If it doesn't come with the Alitalia paintjob, you can bet I'll be looking to buy a custom designed one from another player in the in-game marketplace.

Shame on them if they don't, but very cool that you can buy it in-game just in case.

Dragon Quest VIII is an excellent JRPG. It does however have some silly and humorous aspects that put some people off. It can be down right light and childish at times, which IMHO is part of it's charm.
If a great story is important to you, DQ VIII has one with the quality you'd expect from a Zelda game.   slywink thumbsup

Ended up being more of discussion on game design for other segments than Hannah Montana specifically, but you can go ahead and keep listing games.  It'll be thrilling!

I am so gratified it makes you happy, but it does nothing to change the fact when you turn to a discussion completely and utterly different from the thread topic-in a thread that is still getting traffic- courtesy is to make your own thread about it, not to try to throw in a smile and pretend to be obtuse about it-or to let us know how much more interesting what you are talking about is.  nod

Sorry... my bad; I've contributed to this thread derailment as well.  frown
I just wanted everyone to know why week in and week out I'm never planning on buying the latest release of 'Barbie's Wild Pony Adventure'.

Now...if Tim Shaeffer or American McGee could come up with a 'Pony's Wild Barbie Adventure' game, well...nuff said.
