On top of that, you have a duty as a professional player to uphold professionalism and sportsmanship. This guy should be banned permanently and then brought up on charges.

Which is why the NHL alone should prosecute him and hand him the penalty he deserves; much longer suspension. Simon obviously violated NHL codes of professionalism and sportmanship and the league should prosecute him accordingly. If the NHL decided to ban him permanently, I think it would be harsh but I could live with their decision.

For traditional sport games, the FIFA games are the best on the DS.
I played FIFA 06 through 5 seasons and enjoyed it. I've heard that FIFA 07 is a little bit better. No online WIFI in either version though.

For nontraditional sports game, I'd say Tony Hawks American Sk8tland is by far the the best. It also has WIFI online play.

I have mixed feelings about charging pro sports athletes for actions like this. On the 1 hand I'd expect any such action in public to be dealt with as assault and the offender to be prosecuted. On the other hand pro athletes in contact sports are expected to hit and be conditioned to take hits.  When you have that as a fundamental aspect of you sport there's no way some player won't eventually step outside the rules and make a foolish and dangerous hit. The only guarantee of avoiding this is to remove the contact element from Hockey; something I'm not in favour of.  So IMHO, because hockey has a fundamental element of contact and aggression in it, what happens on ice at the pro level should be prosecuted differently than what happens in public.

If we were talking a particularly nasty hit into the boards (Hatcher vs. Roenick for instance), I might agree with you. However, taking a full-on two-handed swing to the head is NOT a natural part of hockey, nor is it an extension of an activity that is. It's going above and beyond both the written and implied code of hockey to take a head-first leap into intentional assault and battery. Hang 'im high.

Well, for that matter fighting isn't a natural part of hockey either, but it happens. It happens because the game is physical and takes great skill and concentration, all of which sometimes leads to frustration and the flaring of tempers. If you use the argument of it not being natural and support criminal prosecution for such on ice offenses, then hockey players would be charged in court every time there's a fight. As much as I don't like fighting at hockey games, I definitely don't support an endless parade of court cases.

I'm not saying that Simons shouldn't get a very lengthy suspension for his actions -much more than he got in fact- but that he shouldn't be prosecuted in a public court of law for something he's done on the ice. The minute he does it off the ice away from his sport; yah by all means hang 'im high!

No you don't, display your avatar proudly. The foolish mistake of 1 player doesn't ruin an entire team. I didn't stop wearing my Canucks jersey after Bertuzzi screwed up. And don't forget you're also displaying that avatar to honour the great Isles of the Potvin and Trottier era. icon_wink thumbsup  Wish my beloved Canucks had such an era to remember.

Personally?

How is he not in jail for that?  I don't care if it was a game or not, that was flat out assault.
Legal proceedings are separate, but not unheard as we know from the incident in Canada with Marty Mcsorley. There are more incidents like this all the time, especially in the minors, but he's the most recent big name to be found guilty of assault.

I agree this is assault, but since it is an in-home (NY vs NY) rivalry I wouldn't think it goes legal.

I remember McSorley's hit on Brashear well because I was at the game. Simon is very fortunate that Hollweg wasn't hurt more. I don't see how this hit was any less worse than McSorley's hit on Brashear. I seem to recall that McSorley was suspended for the entire next season, so I don't see why Simon should get any less. You're right about a conviction as McSorley was charged for assault by the Vancouver PD and was handed a summary conviction by the judge.

I hope THQ lowering the price isn't an indication of it being buggy/bad. Usually their games are $49.99.

I don't know what prices are like at US retailers, but Future Shop often introduces THQ games at $40; roughly $34 US. Even Company of Heroes and Supreme Commander were introduced at that price. Maybe this initial promo pricing model is now being used at US retailers as well.

Such a difference when you're responding from a position of strength. I like what the Microsoft GM had to say, especially that the best service is one centered around the games. I just wish Nintendo would get in gear and develop something similar for the Wii. Too bad Nintendo keeps underestimating the willingness of some of their customers to pay for such a service, because I sure would.

I also really like what he said about the Live! features for Forza 2.
I've been saying for a while that Mass Effect would be the game to finally compell me to buy a 360, but Forza now interests me every bit as much. Of course laying out the cash to buy another wheel is going to be tough to swallow.

So, what's the scuttlebutt on Forza 2?  I have to admit I don't know much about it.  I never played Forza 1 and don't know anything about it either.

Forza was one of the best racing simulations to date.  As a demonstration of the game's realism they even went so far as to have a real-life racecar driver run a course featured in the game, and then play that same course on the game, and his times were amazingly close.  Great graphics, unlimited car customization, amazing realistic control.  It was probably the best racing sim I've ever played.

Argh.  It's not a sim.  It's fun.  It's attempting to be realistic.  But it ain't a sim.

gellar

Then what is it?  Most seem to characterize it as such.  Except for you.   icon_confused

Anyone who characterizes it as such has never actually driven at 150mph, or played a real sim like GTR on the PC.  Even though you get the same end result, as the article stated, does not mean it's remotely close to the same thing.

I'm in total agreement with this. I'd only classify games like GTR, Grand Prix Legends, NASCAR Racing 2K3 or Rally Trophy as racing simulations. All of which are PC games.
That being said, I'd say that Forza is by far the most realistic racing game on any console.

Everybody and their mother has been calling HOME a cross between Miis and Achievements so I'm not sure why you would find it surprising that Nintendo would make the comparison.

I don't find it surprising at all, just absurd.

Nintendo is trying to say they copied them, when Home is about 100x more advanced that those Mii things. Heck Nintendo still uses the number nonsense for their online stuff....I hardly think they should be casting any stones at Sony for their online service, when they are not even as advanced as the original XBox in terms of online support.

I agree with Hetz on this one.  Nintendo is the last company that should be taking shots at other online services.

Fraid I have to DITTO this.

As most people here know by now, I've been a fan of everything Nintendo for many years. Their online strategy -or lack of- is the one exception. And it's one of the reasons I look to my PC and XBox for online play.

Unless Nintendo has some announcement of a new online service to pull out of their hat, IMHO they should be careful with their criticisms. If they think Sony's scooped some of their Mii ideas with Home...well they could have created an equivalent online service themselves many moons ago.

The day I resort to buying Pokemon games for this thing, is the day I sell it. Isn't Pokemon like a childs card game? There is no way that could be fun for a 32 year old man.

I'm 34 and I love it.

Well, not to be smart allecky or anything, but good for you. For me, at my age, the last thing I want to devote time to, is Pokemon. Maybe when I was 8 or something, but a lot of stuff like that I have outgrown.

Now see, right there with your comment about "outgrowing" something, so are basically insinuating (whether intentionally or not) that I have not and am still a child.  In some ways you're right.

Now you see, this is why I'm glad I have kids. My son has conned me into managed to get me to buy just about every Pokemon game that's been released in the last 5 years.
I actually really enjoyed Pokemon Colosseum for the Cube as it had a more mature look to it and was just fun to play. And my kids got my sister into it right away, since being an animator, she really appreciated the visual quality of the characters and artwork.
I also really liked the fact that my kids could link up their GBA Pokemons to the cube pokemon game.
In a nutshell, I think these games have a lot to offer to a variety of age groups.

We have a 6 year old and he loves Spongebob, Danny Phantom, all that stuff, but just because he likes it, that doesn't mean his mother and I have to like it. I see what you are saying, and I think it is nice that you and your kids play those games together,  but he and I can do fun stuff without me having to sit there and watch Spongebob over and over.

With some of the franchises you've named here, I'd tend to agree. Trust me, I've suffered through enough sessions of Barbie Secret Agent helping out my daughter that I know there's games with zero  adult appeal

My point is that the Nintendo franchises such as Pokemon are done well enough that they can appeal to people ages 4 -to- 64. Many of there titles allow multiplay and other features that extend gameplay significantly. Not many game developers can boast that.
7625  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Fire Emblem - should just stay on the DS/GBA on: March 08, 2007, 07:01:14 PM
I agree with all that's been said here and think Nintendo's missing the boat a bit on this series. The primary development effort should be directed towards a FE release on the DS.

However where I really think they're missing the boat is by not developing a new FE title for the VC. Since most people are happy with the 2D GBA games, why not put something on the VC with a similar look that leverages the better graphical capabilities of the Wii. Perhaps something along the lines of LOZ Four Swords for the Cube. Of course this would require the development of a new pricing category for VC.

Godfather is supposed to release in summer and by not including March Medal of Honor Vanguard, which is looking like one of the better titles, is excluded from the list.
In other words, this list doesn't look very complete.

No mention of MP3 makes me nervous. I just don't have a good feeling about this, it's either going to be a surprise release on schedule or it's been pushed back well into the future.

If he would have considered the age old adages of 'you lead by example' and 'you've got to walk the talk', he would realize that  Nintendo doesn't have to make references to games as art on their web site.

The fact is they've  been pushing -especially Miyamoto- the 'games as an art form' envelope for a very long time. Case in point; The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker. Nintendo got raked over the coals by their fans for wanting to take the game in a new animated art direction, they persevered and the results were brilliant.

I mean WTF does he think, the average gamer considers complex AI algorithms as art?? Plzzz, give me a freaking break!

Anyways... as others have said, it was just a rant session and we'd best just take it with a pound grain of salt.

Whether it's sticky legal ground or not it's been in Microsofts' plans for Windows for a very long time. What you describe is what Bill Gate's and crew have been saying in one form or another since the mid 90's.
As many have said before, it's all about controlling the media that gets delivered in your livingroom. If Live! for Windows is a way for better achieving that, legal or not, Microsoft is going to find a way to do it and ensure that Sony and others don't. And they won't be to concerned about any casualties along the way.

If you haven't tried the multiplay racing yet...you're missing out. My son and I put in a lot of time this weekend racing 1 -on -1 and I've got to say the snowball throwing is a riot! The racing takes on a whole new dimension when you've got to worry about dodging snowballs from behind. Of course it can be damn frustrating too when you get nailed a few feet from the finish line.  icon_surprised

While Microsoft was quite quiet about Live for Windows Vista, today during a press event prior to the Game Developers Conference the company revealed to Game Informer Online the exact pricing structure for the service. Live for Windows Vista will actually be the same exact price for Vista as it is for the Xbox 360. Just like with the Xbox 360 there will be a free Silver package as well as a Gold package which retails for $49.99 for a year subscription, $7.99 for one month, and $19.99 for three months

Good news for gamers who already have an Xbox Live Gold Membership – you’ve already subscribed. Your Live membership works on the Xbox, Xbox 360, and Live for Windows. Your gamer tag and achievements will be used across both Xbox and Vista PCs. Upcoming Vista games like Halo 2 and some exclusive Vista casual games will include achievements and will be able to add to your gamer score.

We'll have more on this as it becomes available.

Well, the good news is, they are not going to rape you twice.  icon_smile

Yeah cool...but I only own an original XBox for which there isn't the Silver and Gold level memberships. So will this let me use my XBox Live! account -which I pay 49.99 per year- to access Vista Live! too?
The GameInformer article sort of hints at this, but it isn't a 100% clear.

I didn't even know it had been released in the US.  I remember the announcement of the name change (from Broken Sword : The Angel of Death), but I don't remember seeing a shipping announcement.  I'll have to pick it up once I finish Sleeping Dragon.

Now I know how it slipped under my radar! I remember seeing the preview at Just Adventure for Angel of Death, so that's the title I was looking out for.  I'll be picking this up sooner than later.
