If it doesn't come with the Alitalia paintjob, you can bet I'll be looking to buy a custom designed one from another player in the in-game marketplace.

Shame on them if they don't, but very cool that you can buy it in-game just in case.

Dragon Quest VIII is an excellent JRPG. It does however have some silly and humorous aspects that put some people off. It can be down right light and childish at times, which IMHO is part of it's charm.
If a great story is important to you, DQ VIII has one with the quality you'd expect from a Zelda game.   slywink thumbsup

Hey that's great that it's doing well in the UK, I really do want this to be a 3 console race generation and this should help Sony. Unfortunately it doesn't sound like the PS3 is selling too well in all parts of Europe.

According to French news site LCI, the PS3 launch at the Eiffel Tower was a complete bust with only 40 fans showing up to be the first to buy a PlayStation 3. Of the thousand units available, only approximately 50 were sold in less than 15 minutes and then the floating “store” closed up shop.

I'm fascinated by the design challenges for games like that.  Like if you're presented with something like that, and you still have to design and produce the game...  now you have to figure out how to get into the mind of a 10 year old girl.   And what also is fascinating, is that the people who make these games are just like you and me.   Regular dudes that probably deathmatch, stomp hookers in GTA, rock out on Guitar Hero, spend weeks in WoW, etc.   (and probably had no clue wtf hannah montana was before the project came up.)    I'm somewhat relieved my projects AREN'T that difficult, but find them fun to look at and see what they came up with.

Yeah, absolutely.  I design features that I don't personally use all the time, but there's a lot less subjectivity to it:  I can interview people who use my product, run usability tests, send out betas and get feedback, go on speaking tours to meet with user groups, etc.  My brain goes numb just thinking about watching Hannah Montana for research purposes.  Of course, girls have been wronged by the game industry:  for the most part, they get licensed crap that enforces stereotypes about horses and princesses and is only nominally "fun".  Many more adult women are stepping away from games targeted specifically at their gender, and toward games that are just, y'know, good games.

My daughter likes many of the popular TV programs targeted at girls her age and a bit older; she's 7.  But what I've found is that very few of the games themed on these franchises keep her attention for any length of time. Poor gameplay is no doubt the main issue, but not all of them have been that bad. And no surprise that we've mostly traded them in for the Nintendo franchises like Kirby, Mario and Pokemon. We've yet to trade in any game from any of these Nintendo franchises; she keeps playing them with enthusiasm.

I've also found my daughter and her friends really like the Star Wars games because they let them play more realistic, perhaps respectable, heroines. My experience with my daughters lack of long term interest in TV themed games has caused me to stop recommending them to friends.

I really want both of these right now, but I held off on getting the Godfather this weekend because I want to get a game my son can play as well.

I'm sure you're playing the game correctly. It's an unfortunate fact, but you can receive brand new Heroclix figures with bases that won't rotate.

I've read that some people have fixed this by using some lubricants; i.e. sewing machine (5 weight) oil. I haven't tried this myself, but whatever you do don't use WD40! The graphite will discolor the colors on the stat wheel, making it impossible to correctly read the stats.

Sprinkling salt on any liquid that's spilled on a carpet will keep the liquid from reaching deeper into the pile where it's likely to adhere. After the salt is dry you can remove it and then go to work on the stain with one of the techniques other's have posted here.
BTW: this salt technique is particularly effective on red wine spills.

Ninja Gaiden Black had the pussy option available to it, ergo it shouldn't even qualify for this list. The original? You'll take your limited continues, your insane difficulty levels and the need for a hell of a lot of luck right from the start, and you will like it!

if you're referring to the original NG for xbox and not the NES game, don't forget that NG:B doesn't just have an easier option...it also has an extra difficulty level at the top end.  think 'Ninja Dog' is too easy?  beat the game on lower difficulty levels and unlock the ridiculously hard option that goes above and beyond the challenge of the original version.  after that, give the missions a try...then come back and say that Black is easier than the original icon_twisted

Yup, it was this aspect of Black that got me confused in my earlier post; I thought the original XBox version had that feature. I never played the NES game and I'm not sure I'll be up for the frustration if it ever releases on VC.

The Star Wars miniature figures don't actually have rotating bases, but I hear you on the Heroclix. It's not uncommon to get figures with bases that won't rotate. The same can be true for the Mechwarrior figures but it's a bit less common.

Your best bet is to buy from a store that sells single, unboxed figures. There's a few in my city that sell them beginning at $1. It will cost you more, but you'll be guaranteed to have a figure that works. There's also apparently various trading sites on the Internet, but I personally haven't used any of them.

Sometimes my controller (nYko) stops showing up there.  It's USB, I just disconnect it and reconnect it, and it shows up.  But sometimes, it's there and I need to recalibrate it.

Already checked that. My Logi is present in the game controllers applet and it's calibrated perfectly everytime I've checked. Something I haven't tried is holding the left analog stick all the way to the right while the game starts. I didn't think this would ever be necessary for a USB controller, but it used to work for gameport joysticks back in the day.

I used the controller driving and the kb/mouse on foot and found the combo to be pretty good. Just have to drop/pickup the controller when getting ito or out of a car.

How did you do this? When I set the control mode to 'standard' my Logi controller is no longer recognized. Whereas when the control mode is set to 'classic',  my controller and I believe keyboard are recognized, but I can't stop the spinning when on foot!?

I guess could always leave my controller plugged in and swap back & forth between classic and standard via the options menu when I get in & out of a car, but that seems like a hassle and it will breakup the game flow.

Anyhooo...I did some testing with my Logitech dual-axis controller. I have the problem that whenever walking on foot, my view constantly spins to the left when the left analog stick is in the neutral position. However, it works perfectly when I'm diving any of the vehicles; and I mean perfect! This constant spinning makes it more or less impossible to use my Logi controller.

I partially solved my control issues by creating a profile for my Nostromo N52 and using it instead of the keyboard. Unfortunately vehicle control really sucks in comparison to using the Logi controller. I've tried switching modes on my Logi -swaps the left analog stick with the digital plus pad- but nothing seems to prevent the spinning.

Any ideas on what I can do to get this game working with a handheld controller?

I've noticed whenever I check the Major Nelson site for the top 10 most popular original XBox online games, that Battlefield 2:MC and Call of Duty 3 are usually on the list. I own almost all other games that are on the list except these 2 . I haven't played Battlefield since 1942 for the PC and I did play Call of Duty: BRO a bit on XBConnect. I enjoyed my online and  offline play time with both of these games.

I have a mid-range spec'd PC so I'm also considering these games PC equivalents if the offline and online experience is much better. I was hoping to let my son play them as well which is why I'm looking at the XBox games. It's a bummer that neither of these is BC to the 360, but I figure I'll just trade them in and buy the 360 equivalent when I eventually get my 360.

My question is; of the 2 of these games which game is the better game for offline play and which is the better for online play?
The other question I have is; are the PC equivalents so far superior that I really shouldn't be considering the XBox games?

I didn't play enough of the games in the list to comment 1 way or another. I'm glad F-Zero GX is in the list in the top 5 because it was brutal to beat. And I agree that the 1st Ninja Gaiden for XBox should be in the list and ranked higher.

I also think that the Genma Onimusha for XBox should be in this list. I know it's recognized as a real challenge because all the gamers in the local video game stores and rental outlets are amazed that I beat it.  icon_wink

If you have a Wii Hetz you might want to reconsider this, since so far the PS3 version is being scored lower than the Wii by most reviewers. The general buzz amongst reviewers seems to be that the graphics in the The Don's Edition don't even come close to using the capabilities of the PS3.

Now this is a situation where you need your PC near your 360 so it can host your vent or teamspeak connection. Then you need to find other players that can do the same; gives you the option of using the superior voice quality.

Not such an easy thing when using XBox Live. This is more common amongst the XBConnect crowd, since they often have their PC's near their XBox or 360 to host the XBC connection. Of course you do end up giving up a lot of the Live features when using XBC, but it  may be worth it for the better voice comm.

I picked up GTA:VC yesterday on a whim for $9. I have to admit that it's not my style of game but the quality of it's good enough that I figure I'll pick it up from time to time.

One thing I don't like about it are the controls which I have set to the standard setting; PC & mouse. Some  of the mappings make this combination very awkward and clumsy and some of the assignments don't seem to be remapable. I've noticed that there's a classic control setting which is supposed to be like the original PS2. I have an older Logitech dual axis controller with 10 buttons for my PC, but I'm not sure if this will work with the classic setting.

I was wondering if anyone here can help me out with this. My question is; can I use the classic setting with a controller like my logitech or do I need to find a PS2 -to- USB adaptor for my PS2 dual shock controller and use it?  icon_confused

That has to be pleasant.  Congratulations sir!  Your car is now covered in raw sewage!  Yaaaayyyyy!!
It's a storm sewer, not the waste sewer.
Still nasty stuff, of course.

The city I live in has a combined stormflow-sewer system where runoff water in the stormflow system drives the sewer system. So if this area is the same, I guarantee you that a backup to that extend will be a wonderful concoction of sewage and storm runoff. These systems aren't too uncommon in areas where it rains a lot.

Some years back I was working on a GIS project to convert legacy data into a new mapping system for our city. When I was proofing map data, I found a section of the stormflow-sewer system called Canoe Creek. Sure enough some city engineers decided decades ago that a creek big enough to paddle a canoe down would be buried in pipes and used for the system. Lets you appreciate how much water can be running through these systems.
I grew up in Colorado Springs, which is an odd place but interesting because it has publically owned utilities which are, apparently, some of the most advanced in the world. I'd always hear about people coming from around the world to look at our storm sewers. The city owns some cutting edge drills, and has one of the few, if not only, sewer rescue teams, which are prepared to enter the storm sewers to rescue people who are trapped in them.

I used to crawl around in there quite a bit when I was a kid, which I didn't realize then was a really dumb idea. But man, what fun!

Yup, definitely a famous neck of the woods for water engineering.
Colorado is also a famous area in the GIS world. I haven't worked in GIS for some years, but my brother in-law still does and the software that makes him 99.9 % of his bread & butter is manufactured in Colorado. I'm in the Pacific NW, so the kind of system I described is quite common due to constant consistent rainfall.

And hell yeah...what were you thinking crawling around that storm sewer system!   icon_biggrin

I've never seen a 20 GB unit in Canada since the launch, whether it be in local stores or online retailers. I could understand this if the 60 GB unit was still priced everywhere at 649.99, which is cheaper than in the US after you factor in the exchange rate. Unfortunately as many of you know, many Canadian retailers pushed the price up to 699.99 in January; believe it's still available at EB for 649.99.

I put this all down to the ineptness of Sony Canada's marketing. It's just ridiculous that they're not pushing the 20 GB unit, which when it was available was priced at 549.99.  When you compare the 20 GB unit to the 360 Premium (499.99), the 20 GB PS3 appears to be a better deal considering the inclusion of the Blu-ray player.  Just another example of how Sony is making foolish mistakes in multiple countries.

I only played the original, but it was one of my favorite GameCube games. I thought the card battling system was one of the best I'd ever played. And from what I've read they improved the card system in the sequel.

Wasn't there a game with that name?

I agree, strange list.  Surely Diablo II gets on there somewhere.  And no love for the Thief games?

IMHO Diablo 1 belongs on the list more than Diablo II, but at least 1 of them anyways. I mean come on, Blizzard more or less pioneered the hack 'n' slash RPG with Diablo.

As time marches on and the history of gaming gets longer and deeper, I've noticed these lists tend to include more recent games at the expense of some older gems. I often wonder if the staff that make these lists up are getting younger and therefore just didn't play them. I must admit I'm always surprised when Ultima Underworld as well as Kings Quest aren't on these lists . Which brings me to the conclusion that anything less than a 50 game list are just too short.

Well, perhaps it is time for US to make a top 50 of all time list for PC?  What do you think?

I think it's a great idea if only to do justice to those older, forgotten gems.
