But the assertion is that they are holding a large supply of Wii's and are going to flood the market in April to keep their investors happy?  You guys don't think the investors are happy right now?  I guess you guys also assume that the Wii is going to stall sales-wise soon?  I don't think they are doing it simply because I don't think they have recovered from the initial sales.  I don't think they have enough stock to even stockpile for their April quarter.

As I stated in a earlier reply, it's not so much a witholding of current supply as it is deciding not to bump up production; i.e they probably don't have some secret warehouse stocked with Wii's. Nintendo stated a few months back that they were ready to increase production before quarter end, but that appears to not have occurred.

The 2nd quarter is often lower for console sales than the 1st and always lower than the 4th, whereas the 3rd is the lowest. Nintendo's in a unique position to buck the trend by not increasing production until these quarters and therefore having a supply and consumer demand that will continue to drive high sales.

As you've stated there's a risk to this approach if in fact the sales would have been very high anyways. In which case Nintendo ends up selling less consoles than they potentially could have by year end. It's worth the risk for Nintendo because shareholders and stock analysts tend to gauge and rate publicly traded companies on a quarterly basis; avoiding a downward trend in a quarter is the key thing.

7605  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The "gamers" boycotting Capcom are pathetic on: March 27, 2007, 08:39:03 PM
Quite frankly the whole proposition of gamers getting incensed about this sort of thing is IMHO ridiculous. The console manufacturers are really the only ones to gain from exclusives. It may be an issue if multi-platform compromised quality, but Capcom made this a non-issue when they ported RE4 to the PS2 with minimal degradation in graphics quality.

The irony of this whole situation is that Capcom, with the success of the Wii, is probably now kicking themselves for not having the favourable relationship they previously enjoyed with Nintendo. When they took RE4 out of exclusively they seriously soured the relationship, and I've read that they aren't being offered license discounts/perks from Nintendo anymore. Whether the playstation fanboys like it or not, Capcom has to now max their multiplatform options if they're to maintain a healthy existence.

Nintendo more than likely recognized that they had a better chance of selling more units by supplying other stores that were not "Force Bundling" the Wii with all kinds of other stuff to inflate the price than they did with EB/Gamestop and others who did this.

This definitely appears to have been the case in at least my city in Canada as each EB store got a max of 15 units and yes, they did "force bundle" them. Senior management at EB apparently assured store managers that they weren't being short changed by Nintendo and that other retailers that had taken "unofficially sanctioned by Nintendo" pre-orders wouldn't have their supply honored. I tried to tell my favorite local EB Manager that this just wasn't true, which I knew to be the case since a friend of mine manages a Toys R Us store. As it turned out, Toys R Us stores got all of the 60 units they pre-sold and Walmarts got 45 - 60 units. There are more EB locations in my city but even if you add up all their numbers, they still got less units.

I think a lot of this goes to previous gen loyalty and corporate attitude and mentality. Just a year or 2 ago you couldn't walk into an EB store in my area and not have some salesperson make unsolicited, negative comments about the Cube. And Toys R Us and various other franchises sold far more GameCubes per capita than EB. Nintendo appears to have rewarded these franchises and somewhat shafted EB.

it gets a 7.0 from

Medal of Honor Vanguard was clearly designed for PlayStation 2 and upgraded for Wii. Games developed in this manner have a tendency to show barely-tweaked visuals and tacked on controls, but Vanguard looks notably sharper and plays significantly better on Nintendo's system. I've scored it lower than our sister site, though, because Wii is simply capable of so much more. Vanguard arrives on PS2 at the end of its life cycle, but it comes to Wii at the beginning and it barely scratches the surface of what's really possible.

What the freck? Scored it lower because of some missed potential? Am I a weird person for thinking that a good game should be called a good game regardless of "missed potential"? Baffling. Way to go IGN, you sure showed EA, you sure sent them a message you dolts. God, I am starting to hate every game media "journalist" site in creation, present company excluded because we tend to not pull bullshit out of our asses like that.

Wanted to come back and note, I don't really care about Vanguard, or the actual review score, but I am bothered at the choice of platform to air some silly grievance with EA.

I read the review and yes IMO the article was written from a very biased perspective. The reviewer constantly makes references to Call of Duty 3 throughout the review and for the most part comments that MOH:V is superior. However when all is said and done they actually scored it lower.

The reviewer continually praises the graphics over COD3 yet gives it the exact same ranking; 7. They did mention that it doesn't maintain as steady and a high a frame rate, but still gives the overall impression that the graphics are superior to COD3. Based on their comments and the rating they gave COD3, I would have expected an 8. Secondly, the replay is ranked lower than what COD3 was given, yet COD3 had no multiplay whatsoever. They make the comment that it doesn't have online, but also mention that the spit screen multiplay is quite good. I would have expected a 7 for this category.

I can understand how a reviewer could interject some personal bias or tilt into their game review, but this review seems to go out of it's way to arrive at a lower score. The proof will be in the pudding when I play MOH:V myself, but from what I read in this review the game sounds more like an 8 out of 10 as opposed to a 7.

I remember around the end of January Reggie Fils-Amis (probably spelt his name wrong) announcing that they were boosting production levels beginning in March to 1 million or more Wii's / month. From what Gamestop is saying, this didn't occur.

My only guess as to why they might not have done this, is possibly by holding off until April they could optimize manufacturing and be more cost effective. One thing you can always count on Nintendo for is to find a way to make more money.

Yeah, DaoC has them. Things I can think of off the top of my head they have.

Battering rams
Ballista (ground and mounted on keep towers)
Catapults (ground and mounted on keep towers, can use different types of ammo)
Boiling oil
Destructable (and repairable) walls
fix ladders that allow stealthers to get into castle

The castles come in various sizes from small towers to large keeps with multiple gates as well as outlying towers (which can be taken over independatly of the main keep and used to assault it). The side that owns the castle can spend PvP points to upgrade the keep (which are visible) as well as add NPC guards of various types. To take a keep the enemy has to kill the NPC keep lord which is rather powerful at which point the castle changes hands.

And add to all this some spectacular settings to strategically situate the keeps. I particularly liked Thidranki with it's 3 bridge access points; just loved camping the enemy bridges with my invisible Midgard ShadowBlade. slywink

Hey that's great that it's doing well in the UK, I really do want this to be a 3 console race generation and this should help Sony. Unfortunately it doesn't sound like the PS3 is selling too well in all parts of Europe.

According to French news site LCI, the PS3 launch at the Eiffel Tower was a complete bust with only 40 fans showing up to be the first to buy a PlayStation 3. Of the thousand units available, only approximately 50 were sold in less than 15 minutes and then the floating “store” closed up shop.

There's also some humorous content in rest of this article about the local Paris 360 marketing teams' attempts to disrupt the event.

I'm fascinated by the design challenges for games like that.  Like if you're presented with something like that, and you still have to design and produce the game...  now you have to figure out how to get into the mind of a 10 year old girl.   And what also is fascinating, is that the people who make these games are just like you and me.   Regular dudes that probably deathmatch, stomp hookers in GTA, rock out on Guitar Hero, spend weeks in WoW, etc.   (and probably had no clue wtf hannah montana was before the project came up.)    I'm somewhat relieved my projects AREN'T that difficult, but find them fun to look at and see what they came up with.

Yeah, absolutely.  I design features that I don't personally use all the time, but there's a lot less subjectivity to it:  I can interview people who use my product, run usability tests, send out betas and get feedback, go on speaking tours to meet with user groups, etc.  My brain goes numb just thinking about watching Hannah Montana for research purposes.  Of course, girls have been wronged by the game industry:  for the most part, they get licensed crap that enforces stereotypes about horses and princesses and is only nominally "fun".  Many more adult women are stepping away from games targeted specifically at their gender, and toward games that are just, y'know, good games.

My daughter likes many of the popular TV programs targeted at girls her age and a bit older; she's 7.  But what I've found is that very few of the games themed on these franchises keep her attention for any length of time. Poor gameplay is no doubt the main issue, but not all of them have been that bad. And no surprise that we've mostly traded them in for the Nintendo franchises like Kirby, Mario and Pokemon. We've yet to trade in any game from any of these Nintendo franchises; she keeps playing them with enthusiasm.

I've also found my daughter and her friends really like the Star Wars games because they let them play more realistic, perhaps respectable, heroines. My experience with my daughters lack of long term interest in TV themed games has caused me to stop recommending them to friends.

Sprinkling salt on any liquid that's spilled on a carpet will keep the liquid from reaching deeper into the pile where it's likely to adhere. After the salt is dry you can remove it and then go to work on the stain with one of the techniques other's have posted here.
BTW: this salt technique is particularly effective on red wine spills.

if you're referring to the original NG for xbox and not the NES game, don't forget that NG:B doesn't just have an easier also has an extra difficulty level at the top end.  think 'Ninja Dog' is too easy?  beat the game on lower difficulty levels and unlock the ridiculously hard option that goes above and beyond the challenge of the original version.  after that, give the missions a try...then come back and say that Black is easier than the original icon_twisted

The Star Wars miniature figures don't actually have rotating bases, but I hear you on the Heroclix. It's not uncommon to get figures with bases that won't rotate. The same can be true for the Mechwarrior figures but it's a bit less common.

Your best bet is to buy from a store that sells single, unboxed figures. There's a few in my city that sell them beginning at $1. It will cost you more, but you'll be guaranteed to have a figure that works. There's also apparently various trading sites on the Internet, but I personally haven't used any of them.

However, it works perfectly when I'm diving any of the vehicles; and I mean perfect! This constant spinning makes it more or less impossible to use my Logi controller.

I partially solved my control issues by creating a profile for my Nostromo N52 and using it instead of the keyboard. Unfortunately vehicle control really sucks in comparison to using the Logi controller. I've tried switching modes on my Logi -swaps the left analog stick with the digital plus pad- but nothing seems to prevent the spinning.

I've noticed whenever I check the Major Nelson site for the top 10 most popular original XBox online games, that Battlefield 2:MC and Call of Duty 3 are usually on the list. I own almost all other games that are on the list except these 2 . I haven't played Battlefield since 1942 for the PC and I did play Call of Duty: BRO a bit on XBConnect. I enjoyed my online and  offline play time with both of these games.

I have a mid-range spec'd PC so I'm also considering these games PC equivalents if the offline and online experience is much better. I was hoping to let my son play them as well which is why I'm looking at the XBox games. It's a bummer that neither of these is BC to the 360, but I figure I'll just trade them in and buy the 360 equivalent when I eventually get my 360.

My question is; of the 2 of these games which game is the better game for offline play and which is the better for online play?
The other question I have is; are the PC equivalents so far superior that I really shouldn't be considering the XBox games?

I didn't play enough of the games in the list to comment 1 way or another. I'm glad F-Zero GX is in the list in the top 5 because it was brutal to beat. And I agree that the 1st Ninja Gaiden for XBox should be in the list and ranked higher.

I also think that the Genma Onimusha for XBox should be in this list. I know it's recognized as a real challenge because all the gamers in the local video game stores and rental outlets are amazed that I beat it.  icon_wink

I really liked the game on the 360. So much so, I am thinking of picking up the Don Edition on the PS3.

Anyway, the Blackhand Edition on the Wii looks good. I just don't know about the graphics and controls for my own enjoyment. The core game though should be solid and Wii owners will be in for a treat with this game.

If you have a Wii Hetz you might want to reconsider this, since so far the PS3 version is being scored lower than the Wii by most reviewers. The general buzz amongst reviewers seems to be that the graphics in the The Don's Edition don't even come close to using the capabilities of the PS3.

For the past 2 years I've thought about taking my son to PAX. I'm in Vancouver so it's only about 2 hours drive. I'm about 90% sure that this year we're going to make it. I regret now not having gone in previous years because I now have the added cost of having to get my son a passport.

I had a question about about registration; is there a discount for early registration?
And if there is, what's the cut off date for early registration?

There is indeed a discount for early registration and I think it ends at the end of March.

OK good to know, thanks for the info Grue.

Now this is a situation where you need your PC near your 360 so it can host your vent or teamspeak connection. Then you need to find other players that can do the same; gives you the option of using the superior voice quality.

Not such an easy thing when using XBox Live. This is more common amongst the XBConnect crowd, since they often have their PC's near their XBox or 360 to host the XBC connection. Of course you do end up giving up a lot of the Live features when using XBC, but it  may be worth it for the better voice comm.

I re-rolled the other day and created a Half Elf Disciple on the RP server. And sure enough some of the stuttering and fps drops that other posters had talked about were there. So from my experience the performance issues seem to be area specific. I didn't experience these on the Orc and Goblin's home isle, but most definitely did in the Shang village.

I really like many of the elements of this game, but think I'm going to hold off purchasing until there's some further optimization.

Game is sitting at 75% ratings, and I have to say I haven't read any of the reviews other than IGN's, but I agree with them in that the Blackhand Controls make this game a lot of fun to play. Picked it up today and put some time into it, and I will definitely say that this game shows how well Motion Control can make a game better. You knock it for not being as pretty as the 360 version, but any reviewer doing that is retarded, and I think it would be hard to deny how much more enjoyable it is to actually punch the crap out of some poor Goombah.

Thanks for posting feeback on the game Tebunker. I typically don't care for these type of games, but the subject matter sells me on this one.  I've held off on purchasing any other versions of this game, so I'll be picking this up very soon; probably this weekend.   slywink thumbsup
