I can't wait to see how Detroit and Nashville fair in the playoffs now that they'll have to face some real competition. As far as I'm concerned, their regular season numbers mean absolutely nothing when you consider the pathetic, bottom-feeder central division they racked the majority of them up in. If Detroit can manage to survive the Flames, they'll be so beat up they won't be in any shape for a cup run. The sames true for Nashville, let's see how much they enjoy the Sharks coming at them full force.

I just wish more Canadian teams had made the playoffs, but I'm not entirely sorry to see the Isles make it in at the expense of Toronto and Montreal. They survived a lot of controversy to get there and it means I might get a chance to see Smytty play. smile Of course surviving the Sabres aint gonna be easy!

I read the write up at the RPG Vault site. While I like to remain positive about new MMO's I must say this game doesn't sound very original at all. And the premise of a RPG involving the early exploration of NA just sounds boring. Other than prirates, bucaneers and scoundrels in the Carribean I just can't think of anything exiting about this period in N.A. for an MMO. Perhaps if it's a strategy MMO it might work.

7537  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [Wii] Wiikly update for VC on: April 09, 2007, 04:44:18 PM
3 Virtual Console titles this week:

Quote
Galaga
NES
2 players
500 Wii Points
Players control their fighters, with their unique ability to combine with other fighters and shoot down the invading aliens. Aliens attack in formations using a variety of attack patterns. Rescue a captured fighter to combine with it, forming a Dual Fighter with twice the firepower. Earn Perfect Bonuses more easily by using a Dual Fighter on the Challenging Stages. Galaga was released in 1981 and became an instant classic with its innovative fighter-combination system and varied enemy attack patterns.

Bravoman
TurboGrafx-16
1 player
600 Wii Points
The village of Nitta has been invaded by the army of Dr. Bomb, an evil scientist who is plotting to take over the world. Facing this crisis is Bravoman, who received his powers from Alpha Man to stand up against Dr. Bomb in the name of justice. The village of Nitta consists of 22 stages - action stages that take place on the ground and shooting stages that take place underwater. Action stages use a unique control system in which the height of a jump and the distance of an attack changes depending on how long players hold down the button. Players collect the Luck Symbols that appear when they defeat enemies and give them to Lottery Man to get recovery and power-up items. Stop Dr. Bomb and bring peace to the village of Nitta and the rest of the world.

Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
Sega Genesis
1-2 players
800 Wii Points
When King Thor was kidnapped, his son, Alex Kidd, held out hope that his father would return to their kingdom on Planet Aries. Finally, it was revealed that he was being held captive on Planet Paperock. As Alex, players race to his rescue through 11 levels, battling enemies and avoiding obstacles while winning coins that will buy special items and vehicles. At the end of each level, players encounter a boss and enter into a match of “Rock, Paper, Scissors.” Throwing the right symbols puts players ever closer to bringing King Thor home; throwing the wrong symbols squashes them beneath a heavy weight.

Other than Galaga I haven't heard of these.  The Alex Kidd game does sound interestng especially if it has a co-op play mode.

What you have displayed here is the Logitech PS2 keyboard which I have found to be a very good controller. It isn't obvious from this picture but you can actually detach the keyboard from the frame so that you just have a USB keyboard. Some friends of mine have actually plugged the detached keyboard into laptops and have found them to be quite decent. I don't know of anyone who's connected it to a X360 but it should work. I've tried connecting the detached keyboard to my Wii, but it's a no go.

7540  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Wii] Which controlelrs can be used to play Gamecube games? on: April 08, 2007, 04:53:21 AM
Only gamecube controllers can be used to play gamecube games on the Wii. You can however,  also use a GameCube controller to play most Virtual Console games.

If you're considering purchasing one, I'd recommend the wavebird wireless as it doesn't cost much more than a standard Gamecube controller anymore. One thing to note however is that the wavebird doesn't support rumble, so if that's important to you get a standard Nintendo wired controller.
I'd also recommend you avoid 3rd party GameCube controllers as there were very few released  that were any good.

RPG's, MMORPG's and Adventure games are the games I most excel at. I do enjoy some FPS, RTS, sports and fighting games but all 4 of these are definitely not where my strength is. Although I can generally get good at any RTS game if I play it enough. And I can still beat my 10 year old son at Street Fighter  Roll Eyes

In regards to online FPS's, as I've said before I can't really play them without having my head handed to me. Which is fine just as long as my opponents aren't complete asses; something I haven't found to be always true on Live.
7542  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [DS] Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales - Review on: April 04, 2007, 08:03:17 AM
IGN has posted their review for FF Fables: Chocobo Tales and the game has scored an 8.2.

Link: http://ds.ign.com/articles/778/778218p1.html

I know as much as the next person that IGN is a bit on the generous side for their scoring, but I do like what they say in the closing comments:

Quote
The game might feel a bit "kiddy" in its focus, what with those great, big, cute Chocobo eyes peeking at you from the box art. But even though the idea might skew young, the product is surprisingly enjoyable for the older crowd. Don't expect a huge, elaborate "the world's gonna end and we're gonna die!" emo storyline in Chocobo Tales, because the only danger here is a diabetic coma from the sugary sweet overload. The mini-games are clever and fun, and the card battle actually offers something simple yet challenging, and significantly different from the Yu-Gi-Oh crowd. This game surprised me on how fun it was; even if you're not a Final Fantasy junky I think you'll like it too.

I'll definitely be buying this when I finally get an additional DS for my son. BTW the games graphics aren't too shabby either.

It's looking fine on my HDTV, but the game's none the less quite dark. I remember having to fiddle with contrast and brightness on my old JVC SDTV for the N64 version. I also remember that it did look significantly better when I finally got my N64 connected via S-Video.

No.

No, but a lot of the screenshots and graphical "features" they are highlighting require DX10 (which for now still requires Vista).  It will probably still look fantastic on DX9 and XP but you will miss out on some (no idea how much or how little this early).

Cool, thanks ericb and Siege for letting me know. I'm not too concerned about running with bleeding edge graphics as in my experience Funcom's very good at application scalability. It'll be interesting to see just how good, or bad, it looks on a mid-spec PC. I could see them giving preference to Vista/DirectX10 beta testers as there's likely to be less of them that sign up; might prevent me from getting accepted.

Anyhow...I'll sign up for the beta tonight.

I have far more gamecube games than I do PS2 games. I don't own an Xbox so I figured I wouldn't bother mentioning it. I do still think the PS2 is awesome.

I think Nintendo made the right call by making a radically different machine than the PS360. And, it is hard to argue that right now it's working for them in a big way. I too worry about it's long term staying power.

My XBox library and GameCube library are similar in size, with a slight edge to XBox. However the titles I have in my Cube library are constant and I'll likely never part with them, whereas  my XBox titles change frequently. I've only had a PS2 for a short while so my library is still small, but growing fast.

I have concerns about the long term longevity of the Wii as well. If Wii sales remain consistent throughout 2007, I think some 3rd parties will announce and deliver some AAA titles in 2008 and 2009; titles produced by top / 1st line dev teams. As much as I'd like to see the Wii garner a huge library, I really don't expect to be playing many new 3rd party titles on it after 2009; mostly due to it's modest technical specs.

I've often wondered if Nintendo might break with tradition this console general and release a new system inside of their standard 5 year life cycle.

I think most 3rd parties feel they aren't going to compete with Nintendo's stuff so they don't even try, just do mostly cheap port jobs.

Yup, I couldn't agree more; Nintendo is their worst enemy for garnering 3rd party support. No other company has as many titles in the top 100 all-time ranked games. This must definitely be an intimating factor when 3rd parties consider developing a title for a Nintendo console.

It just always amazes me how much the 3rd party companies are in denial about doing these cheap ports. I remember the CEO of THQ publicly tearing a strip of Nintendo in late 2003 because their games didn't sell well on the GameCube. If you look at what titles THQ delivered to the Cube in 2001 - 2003 they were most part just pure and utter crap.  Someone needs to call these 3rd parties to the floor.

7551  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [PS2] Which Ratchet and Clank Game to Get? on: March 31, 2007, 10:18:41 PM
I noticed that Besbuy.ca has a 2 game for $35 CDN promotion on select PS2 game. I've already decided that I'll be getting Sly 3 as 1 of the games. The promotion includes 2 of the Ratchet and Clank games; Deadlocked and Up Your Arsenal. I'm undecided on which in this series to get.
Part of my consideration in the games I'm choosing is whether they have co-op play, as I currently have very few for the PS2.  My son really likes co-op play and we've played through our XBox and Cube games that support it multiple times. I know that Deadlocked has co-op play and that Up Your Arsenal doesn't, but I'm also aware that Up Your Arsenal is a much higher ranked game.

My questions are:
Is Up Your Arsenal that much better than Deadlocked?
Is the co-op play in Deadlocked any good?

Any feedback anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

If there's only one piece of advice that I could give to the managers of third party companies, it would be that a lot of times it seems that when they're putting games out on Nintendo hardware, those games are being developed by their third-string team or their fourth-string team. Maybe that's because they see those products as being unique projects or somewhat smaller-scale projects. But when Nintendo puts out a title that is designed to really support and sell its hardware, that title is always developed by one of our number one teams. And so I think that when it comes to the question of trying to compete with our software, I would really like to see the parties try to do that with their number one teams rather than with the third- or fourth-string teams. [Laughs.]

Thanks for the info Tebunker, I'll definitely check out that blog.

I'm glad Miyamoto made these comments. I'd really like to see Miyamoto and Reggie Fils-Ami verbally lambaste 3rd parties for the poor effort they've giving to Wii game development. Of course we'll never see it as Nintendo has always had to walk a thin, diplomatic line with it's 3rd party money making opportunists support.

Out of all of the 3rd parties Ubisoft just takes the cake. Take Farcry for the Wii as a case in point. It was developed by their award winning studio that brought us Splinter Cell, but by their bottom dwelling least skilled dev team. Way to go Ubi, here's hoping you didn't make a cent on that game!

 icon_lol

What you just wrote sounds just like a 360 fanboys pipe dream....oh wait, it is!  icon_wink

Why would you be so surprised? The PS3 is the only system with a hard drive standard. It makes perfect sense for a PC game to be ported to it.

Hetz, for Christs sake give it a rest. If you read any of my posts for the last few months you'd know that I'm anything but a 360 fanboy. I don't even own one and I frequently criticize it in this forum; albeit constructive criticisms. Go ahead and call me a Nintendo fanboy if you like, but for Pete's sake not a 360 fanboy.

Trust me when I say that there's legions of fans of Biowares' PC titles that would have nothing to do with Bioware ever again if they ported Dragon Age to the PS3 or any other console for that matter. I've read the posts of this contingency with amusement for the past few years. They have far more of a chip off their shoulder about being neglected by Bioware than you do about a Bioware game coming to the PS3. Personally I think it would be great if a game like DA made it to the PS3, but I don't think we'll see it happen as Bioware is blasted by it's PC fans on a daily basis.

On another note, I wouldn't be surprised if Bioware releases some other RPG for the PS3, just not DA. But hell, maybe Bioware's had enough of the PC fanclubs bitching and are starting to get tough; anythings possible. I admit to being a bit harsh in calling EGM staff members PS3 fanboys but my comment stems from my complete lack of respect for their publication. I can't recall reading a worse gaming publication ever, so I'm always surprised when you quote it.

Bioware is also partially using DA to appease the Bioware PC fanbase, which has been very vocal in crying foul over the lack of new PC releases. I could never understand their arguments for the most part, but their appears to be many that are adamant that the PC is the only viable RPG platform.
Of course Bioware could just ignore them, but for the fact that sales of BG II and NWN earned them a fair chunk of cash while Jade Empire (XBox) earned them very little.

All I can say is that this move will do nothing to help Micro$oft garner casual gamer support, something $$Peter$$Moore$$ stated was a key Micro$oft goal no less than a month ago. All the casual gamer is going to read from the announcement is that there's another console with a price tag in the extreme echelon that the PS3 now inhabits.

I'll wager that come year end M$ is going to regret this when they look at their overall sales. I had been fully expecting Wii sales to dip significantly in the 3rd quarter, but I'll bet this announcement helps Nintendo maintain consistent numbers. Trust M$ to get sucked into a feature war with Sony; it's as if they think the console game is another version of M$ Office Suite vs Corel Office Suite.

In regards to the rumours that the core will be cancelled, it's interesting to note that Future Shop has dropped the price of the 360 core to $349 CDN for the next week. I can only speculate as to whether they're attempting to clear out last remaining stock or to combat negative impact from the Elite announcement.

Okay - go ahead.

Heh, heh...Yah I like it better that way. Ironically the announcement of the Elite is probably going to result in -$$$-

The most absurd thing about this is that the "Holding Back Supply" myth is being perpetrated again except it's by Gamestop/EB this time.  Any other retailers taking this position?  I don't see any.  Gamestop/EB screwed themselves on Wii supply by force bundling them at such a high price, and even then, they couldn't keep them in stock.  Supply and Demand, except Demand far exceeded the ability to Supply in this case.

This is not true.

There was no bundling of the Wii or the PS3 or the 360 in the United States. I don't know about Canada...it's possible that they tried it there on some basis, but I will not sit idly by while people continue to perpetrate such blatant generalizations.

Now, the dotcoms *did* do bundles on the Wii, but the brick and mortar stores absolutely did not.

My understanding is that only the initial preordered Wii's were sold in bundles by EB Canada. All other sales since have been sold as separate units, accessories, games etc.

The intention to sell in bundles is possibly the reason EB Canada got less launch day Wiis from Nintendo.

Damn, can't believe I missed this thread. Game looks great, but length definitely makes me weary. I think I will wait for a price drop and jump on this as I tend to enjoy games of this nature.

Ditto. I'm IN once the price drops  icon_wink thumbsup
