Most likely Pokemon Diamond or Pearl this Friday.
I picked up FF VI and Batallion Wars on Friday so those along with my backlog will keep me more than enought occupied.

While I voted for Live and Let Die, I truly meant to vote for the Guns N' Roses 'remix' of the song. biggrin

I'd say that still counts. In a comparison like this I think we're mostly considering the actual composition as opposed to the production. If we were to focus on production there's no way 'For Your Eyes Only' would be in the poll, as the instrument arrangement for that song was weak.

Anyone able to comment on whether a five-year-old would be able to play this? Too hard?

There's too much reading in it for a 5 year old IMHO. I've had 2 sons play the Pokemon series and now a daughter that's 7. My daughter has only been able to really enjoy the game this year and she's a fairly advanced reader for her age. That being said my oldest son was able to enjoy the GBC versions at age 5, but he was an extremely advanced reader for his age group.

7446  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: In search of: Traditional RPG on: April 22, 2007, 09:43:44 PM
I'd agree with Gellar's recommendation of SoA as well; a great TB-RPG game that was better than the original DreamCast release. I'd also 2nd Final Fantasy X, even though it's a bit linear it's still an excellent game. You also might enjoy the card-based Baten Kaitos GC games. They do have a time limit on moves, but they play and feel very much like a TB-RPG.

If it's both you and your girlfriend that are interested why don't you try some co-op play, and on that note give Tales of Symphonia for GC a whirl. It may be an action RPG, but it definitely has some design elements that would appeal to a TB-RPG fan.
7447  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / What Was the Best James Bond Song? on: April 22, 2007, 08:53:09 PM
Last night I fired up Goldfinger for my brother in-law and nephew since the hockey game was over. During the opening my son commented that the song was really bad and I had to agree; Shirley Bassey's Gold Finger wasn't one of the worst Bond songs ever. This started off a real heated debate between my brother in-law and I over which was the best Bond song ever.

My brother in-law claimed that Sheena Easton's "For Your Eyes Only" was by far the best. Damn him because it brought back memories of my 1st live-in girl friend and how we used to do some close dancing to it at college dances; I found out she died of cancer a few years ago. So after I could wipe the brief tears from my eyes I countered with either "Live and Let Die" or "The Look of Love" as the best Bond songs ever. Then he accused me of dissing the great women Bond composers and said if it wasn't Sheena Easton it had to be Carly Simon's "Nobody Does it Better"; LOL I had completely forgot about that song and yes it's a good one.

Well....the debate went on and on with my nephew giving thumbs up to some of the newer bond songs. After I downloaded a number of MP3's to compare, we all did agree that the 4 above songs were probably the best. I have to admit that I haven't been impressed with the newer Bond themes and the 4 above IMHO at least represent the best songs from the 60's, 70's and 80's. We also couldn't find MP3's for Nancy Sinatra's "You Only live Twice", Gladys Knights "License to Kill" or Sheryl Crow's "Tomorrow Never Dies", so they might be contenders as well.

After all was said and done I'd have to give the nod to "The Look of Love" because it was another song from a theme song composer who has a great track record.  I told my brother in-law that to settle this I'd ask some real experts; so hence this post. My brother in-law insisted that I list "For Your Eyes Only" at the top of the poll, but I refuse to list it above a song composed by one of the 'fab four'; nuff said. So please post your favorites and arguments.

CSL I hear you, it's one of the reasons I lost interest in the series. Not that I'm in love with commentary in NHL 2K7. I've only rented EA's NHL series for the last 4 or so releases so I don't even recall who they're using; is it Don Taylor? I loved Hughson's commentary in the older NHL games like 99. I still crack up when I think of his "hooohoo freight train coming through!"  icon_lol

BTW How are you finding the gameplay in NHL 07?  As I said above I only rented it briefly so I'd be interested in hearing your impressions.

Well you seem to forget the very cheap, dangerous play the Stars pulled in the 1st 2 games. Just in case you forgot both Cooke and Keslar aren't playing for the Canucks in this series. Interesting how you seem to be very selective in you comments like this, some balance would be appreciated.

The Canucks are becoming depressing to watch.

Well if you're talking about tonights game, then I'd tend to agree. I just got in the door in time to catch the 3rd period. I didn't get to see the 1st and only caught a bit of the 2nd while driving back from the airport. From what the CBC commentators are saying the Canucks didn't play much better in the 1st and 2nd periods. I did think this would be a 7 game series so I'm not completely surprised it's come to that; just a bit surprised the Canucks played poorly in this game.

Sounds like another very -away from home- dismal performance by the Flames. I mean 5 - 1 is quite a blow out for a playoff game. Not surprised that things got ugly at the end; would have liked to have seen some of it just no way possible at 36,000 feet  icon_frown

I'm flying home from Tulsa to Vancouver tomorrow, so there' ll be lots of DS action. I hope to finish FF III and Castlevania DOS, with some possible play time in SMB. Once I get home I'll probably find some time for NHL 2K3 and Godfather:BH.

Now how all these new gamers feel about the system once it's lost it's "new thing smell", I have no idea.  Surely the same mentality is at work with Word of Warcraft, which likewise is grabbing new gamers.  And while many of them don't stick with it, more than enough of them do.

I really like the comparison to WoW that you make here. Just as some people don't understand the mass appeal of the Wii I don't understand the WoW phenomena. I've tried playing it but it's far too much casual oriented, too cookie cutter and too non-challenging to interest me. I know it has mass appeal as I'm constantly reminded of that by local EB and Futureshop employees who literally trip over themselves with excitement discussing the thrills and challenges it has to offer.

I know from my limitted experience with WoW, that like Nintendo's game's it's AAA quality. I'ts just too simplistic to interest someone like myself who's been playing rp games for 2 decades. Unlike WoW I do enjoy the casual games available for the Wii, but I do understand how some long time gamers wouldn't.

I'm glad everyone who's posted so far is happy with the BC list. I'm not sure why anyones surprised by the new additions as Microsoft promised to update it with new titles on a quarterly basis. I'm more surprised that it took them over 4 months since the last update.

I'm glad to see Phantom Dust, Street Fighter Anniversary, Mechassault 2, -OMFG Microsoft makes another of their own game BC- Mercenaries and JSRF added to the list.
It infuriates me to no end however, that Midtown Madness 3 and Rallisport Challenge 2 are still absent from the list. Just amazing that even with the 360 having been out for 1.5 years Microsoft still hasn't managed to make 2 of their own better games BC!  icon_evil

Some of the S-Video ports on video cards are bi-directional. If your video card has such a port you should be able to find some software that would allow you to grab a frame. If I recall correctly, the utility called TV Tool might have this capability, or at least their site has information on this. Sorry, don't have a link but try googleing for it.

Just out of morbid curiosity, do all these Pokemon games tie together beyond having the same characters (or do they even have the same characters?)?

Many of the same pokemons are available in each game. However, each game usually has some very powerful pokemon(s) as well as some unique environments that are exclusive to that game. If you played one of the GBA versions you will get a "been there before" feeling if you play another one. From my experience kids don't seem bothered by this. I personally know my son and his friends have put in some serios time in each of the Ruby, Green Leaf, Fire Red and Emerald versions.

By connecting a gameboy link cable you can trade pokemons amongst the varous GBA versions as well as upload them to the GC version for arena battles.

How does Virtua Fighter 2 stack up as a console fighting game?

The Genesis version is a 2D sprite fighter that if I remember correctly was pretty good for the time.

I was all ready to mock you, I thought for sure this was one of the first 3d rendered fighters, but I guess you're right.  This is the first screenshot I could find for the Genesis version:

Having played it on the Genesis Collection on PS2 I can say it isn't too bad.

I wasn't even aware there was a genesis collection for the PS2 that had games like VF 2. I'll definitely check out the cost and availability of it before I download this from VC.
