This is music to my ears. It's what I've been waiting for; a new manufacturing technique that could allow for a price drop  and improve reliability through reduced heat.
As it stands, despite very much wanting Forza 2 and Mass Effect, I'm not willing to gamble on landing an unreliable 360 or pay the extra cost for a replacement warranty.

Yup Godfather Blackhand is so much fun I had to stop playing it. I know it's just a game, but I got way too much pleasure out of doing evil deeds in it.

This is classic Microsoft strategy: establish a presence, continue to incrimentally improve their product, then just sit around and wait for your competitors to get greedy and content then self destruct.  It happened with WordPerfect and Lotus, it happened with with NetWare, it happened with Netscape, and it at this early point, it seems like the Sony PlayStation could be added to that list.

I think that's a good comparison for relating the current state of competition between Microsoft and Sony. But in regards to the Nintendo Wii, Microsoft really hasn't encountered anything like it before.

To create an equivalent scenario, think of Apple releasing a new OS about a year after Windows 95 that sells in 1 fiscal quarter 1/2 of what Windows did in a year. Then throw in a new MAC hardware design that's as popular and sexy as the current iPod. Faced with those factors it's very possible we'd be using a different OS than the XP and Vista we all know.

I remember a quote from Reggie a few months back that Goldeneye was still a possibility; sorry but I can't find the link. His comments were something to the tune of Nintendo is trying to secure the JB license for that game only and that the VC cost might be adjusted accordingly. This wouldn't bother me as I'd gladly pay more than $10 for this game.

If someone else know that this has been squashed as a rumour or If Nintendo is no longer pursuing this, please post the info.

It's also coming out on PC, so it could be resized from those.

That would be my guess.

Well if the PC version supports wide screen resolutions I'd be quite happy to get that version. I really liked the contol scheme for the XBox version of Legends and would probably enjoy a PS2 control layout.  I did however play the original TR on PC, so for full nostalgia effect that might just be the ticket.

Put in some serious time playing JB: Everything or Nothing in coop. I finally bought Pokemon Pearl only to have my son scoop my DS and come up for air a few times this weekend for baseball and hiking.
I discovered a gem in the XBox game Flatout; got it real cheap on sale at EB this weekend. It's got to be good because it even got my son to break off from his Pokemon play to do some split screen racing.  icon_wink
Also spent considerable time with Star Fox 64 on the VC. Just can't say enough good things about this game; a title that really stands the test of time.

Super Princess Peach would be a good bet, although it's definitely not Nintendo's best DS game.
Others to consider:

New Super Mario Bros
Pokemon Pearl or Diamond
Kirby Canvas Curse
Sonic Rush
Animal Crossing
Mario & Luigi - Partners in Time
Meteos Disney Magic

I'd personally stay away from any of the games themed on TV shows targeted at girls. I've bought far too many GBA games like that for my daughter only to have her tire of them within days.

PS3 is a flop, its dead and done unless something dramatic happens.

The "something dramatic" will be when the AAA titles from the AAA franchises are released.  The question becomes, will there be enough support for the system at that point for anyone to care?

To be honest, the lack of AAA titles from both MS & Sony baffles me.   Outside of Gears of War and maybe Guitar Hero, where are the big system sellers for either console?  There's no GTA, no Halo, no Final Fantasy, no Metal Gear, nothing from any of the series that are all but proven to sell more systems.  Hell, even the new IP's that are considered heavy hitters have been ridiculously slow in coming (i.e. Lair, Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed).  I know they're all on the way, but it seems like both systems are sure taking their sweet time.

Gotta hand it to the big N.  At least they're smart enough to release something from their flagship franchises (i.e. Mario & Zelda) quickly to keep people interested.

Nintendo has no choice in regards to releasing their own AAA games as 3rd party support for their consoles has been poor since the N64. Whereas MS and Sony both had excellent 3rd party support last console gen. The support for the XBox in particular was phenomenal considering MS only sold about 25 million units.
3rd party support seems to be continuing for the 360, but I'd agree that it's waning for the PS3.

1st what they should do. With the large install base they're accumulating, they need to buy new development studios that can produce AAA games.

Perhaps not AAA, but Nintendo evidently just purchased Monolith Software, makers of the Xenosaga and Baten Kaitos series, as well as the dev on their upcoming Disaster: Day of Crisis.  This is pretty significant because it gives them an experienced in-house JRPG arm, especially since they lost Camelot, developers of the Golden Sun series.

Damn, I didn't hear about this. This is just the type of studio Nintendo needs to buy. While not AAA, Monolith definitely makes AA quality JRPG's. Add a few more like this and they'll be able to keep the flow of titles coming.  icon_wink thumbsup

This is great and all, but my main question is what will Nintendo do now that they are coming back to relevance? What can we expect if they become a market leader.

What they should do is different than what they probably will do.

1st what they should do. With the large install base they're accumulating, they need to buy new development studios that can produce AAA games. In a nutshell, they need to find and purchase a new studio that's the equivalent of the old Rare of the N64 days; they'll probably need to buy more than 1. Having a consistent stream of AAA titles will help them keep market momentum with the Wii. As it appears now, if they rely on 3rd parties the quality titles aren't going to materialize. On another note, if Nintendo's given a quarantee form a 3rd party for the development of an AAA quality title, i.e. Capcom's RE4 for the Cube, Nintendo needs to put some solid marketing behind it.

Now what they'll likely do. As I mentioned once before in a different thread, Nintendo can be their own worst enemies. The AAA quality they deliver for the majority of their titles makes some 3rd parties nervous about heavily committing new games with long development cycles. A number of 3rd parties have complained in the past about only Nintendo's own titles selling well on their consoles. Even thought the Wii is proving to be wildly more successful than the N64 and the Cube, this sentiment will probably continue at least through 2008.

My concern is that Nintendo will hold off with purchasing new studios in order to appease this concern from 3rd parties. As is apparent with a majority of the titles that have been produced for the DS, 3rd parties are very content to ship low quality shovelware for Nintendo systems. My concern is that Nintendo will hold off with developing new IP's and the 3rd party won't deliver. If you consider that Reggie Fils-Aims considers his 3rd party Wii relationship with Ubisoft to be a good one, this is a legitimate cause for concern.

It's ironic, but what was a good plan of action for the N64 and Gamecube is going to prove to be a bad plan of action for the Wii. Nintendo has got to get the quality out there, because not enough 3rd parties are. I'd like to say it more diplomatically, but if you consider how few 3rd parties have produced AAA and AA quality titles for the 40 million + selling DS, all I can say is fuck them!

As is the case with some of the others that have already replied, it isn't previous experience with the game or nostalgia for me as the 1st Zelda game I played was LOZ: OOT and the 1st Mario game was Mario 64. What I think really makes the game stand out is the following:

Story and Pacing: the games are very well structured and there stories unfold very effectively. The Zelda stories have a real epic feel to them which make you -well at least me- want to play them to the finish. The pacing has a bit of a down side in that disruptions to the game flow can really spoil things. With Zelda games I really recommend referring to a game guide or cheats if you ever get hung up. The puzzles in some of the Zelda games can be quite challenging or not overly apparent and these game are ruined if you can't keep the story and plot flowing.

Humour: There's a lot of  humour in Mario and Zelda games and some of it's very clever. Some of it can be a bit silly, but it still done well enough to always make the game fun.

Quality: These franchises are the most bug free out of any game series I've ever played. Playing a Zelda or a Mario game you can really tell that the development team obsessed over it with a lot of attention to detail.

Not Genre Restricted: By this I mean that the Mario and Zelda series games can't always be pigeon holed into a specific genre. There's often different elements of action, adventure, platforming and even light role-playing. This makes these games appeal to players of varying interests and a variety of age groups.

I'd agree that these games may not be for everyone and that there are other series that equal them in quality; Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy come to mind. I think their sales success is a direct reflection of what I highlighted above and there really isn't much mystery to the large numbers.

My biggest issues with WWII shooters is that they don't vary the Theatres enough. The Pacific has barely been touched in games, and some of the biggest and best battles were fought along the Pacific Midway.

Exactly. To the best of my knowledge there hasn't been a WWII shooter that takes you from the landings on the beaches of Iwo Jima to the moment the flag was placed on the mountain top; um... I mean the actual 1st flag, not the 2nd  photo op one. And that's just one example of many WWII pacific battles that haven't been covered.
And WTF about there being no Korean war based shooter! That war had some of the most grueling and amazing land battles in it.

7385  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Vanguard on: April 25, 2007, 05:35:34 PM
I played the trial but didn't continue because, as a number of posters have already said, the game was released before it was ready. The game lacked proper optimization in a number of key areas, which really diminished it's playability. I found it amazing that the lead designer at Sigil admitted as much publicly in an interview and in a very cocky way at that.

I think the game has a lot to offer and will eventually be well worth playing; great to play a game that has a kick ass healer / caster class re. the Disciple! My concern however is that the game world is so big that by the time it's really ready for the masses, there won't be enough players to give it a decent sized population.

I've found that you have to be patient with ambitious MMORPG's like this and consider returning to them at a future date. Playing the trial got me hungry for a new MMORPG, which eventually led to me to trying Dungeons & Dragons Online once again.  I played DDO about a year ago shortly after it's release and lasted only about a month before giving up. I've now been playing for about 2 months and the difference between the current game and that of a year ago is night and day. The game has improved significantly in almost every area and I'm enjoying it very much now. I think the same will be true for Vanguard, give it a year and it will most likely be a much better experience.

I'd agree with Gellar's recommendation of SoA as well; a great TB-RPG game that was better than the original DreamCast release. I'd also 2nd Final Fantasy X, even though it's a bit linear it's still an excellent game. You also might enjoy the card-based Baten Kaitos GC games. They do have a time limit on moves, but they play and feel very much like a TB-RPG.

If it's both you and your girlfriend that are interested why don't you try some co-op play, and on that note give Tales of Symphonia for GC a whirl. It may be an action RPG, but it definitely has some design elements that would appeal to a TB-RPG fan.
7398  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / What Was the Best James Bond Song? on: April 22, 2007, 08:53:09 PM
Last night I fired up Goldfinger for my brother in-law and nephew since the hockey game was over. During the opening my son commented that the song was really bad and I had to agree; Shirley Bassey's Gold Finger wasn't one of the worst Bond songs ever. This started off a real heated debate between my brother in-law and I over which was the best Bond song ever.

My brother in-law claimed that Sheena Easton's "For Your Eyes Only" was by far the best. Damn him because it brought back memories of my 1st live-in girl friend and how we used to do some close dancing to it at college dances; I found out she died of cancer a few years ago. So after I could wipe the brief tears from my eyes I countered with either "Live and Let Die" or "The Look of Love" as the best Bond songs ever. Then he accused me of dissing the great women Bond composers and said if it wasn't Sheena Easton it had to be Carly Simon's "Nobody Does it Better"; LOL I had completely forgot about that song and yes it's a good one.

Well....the debate went on and on with my nephew giving thumbs up to some of the newer bond songs. After I downloaded a number of MP3's to compare, we all did agree that the 4 above songs were probably the best. I have to admit that I haven't been impressed with the newer Bond themes and the 4 above IMHO at least represent the best songs from the 60's, 70's and 80's. We also couldn't find MP3's for Nancy Sinatra's "You Only live Twice", Gladys Knights "License to Kill" or Sheryl Crow's "Tomorrow Never Dies", so they might be contenders as well.

After all was said and done I'd have to give the nod to "The Look of Love" because it was another song from a theme song composer who has a great track record.  I told my brother in-law that to settle this I'd ask some real experts; so hence this post. My brother in-law insisted that I list "For Your Eyes Only" at the top of the poll, but I refuse to list it above a song composed by one of the 'fab four'; nuff said. So please post your favorites and arguments.
