You could always boot with a Linux live CD (like Ubuntu) and use Gparted to partition your NTFS disk.  It'd be free.

How well will Gparted work for resizing a drive that already contains an installation of XP and a multitude of games?
I really don't want to have to reinstall all my games and I don't have any backup medium large enough to do the entire drive; game saves and patch downloads are currently backed up.
I haven't worked with any flavour of Linux for about 5 few years, so I'm a little hesitant with this solution. If others have used this for scenarios like mine I'm willing to give it a try. I also don't have a clue where you get the Linux Live CD-ROM; how do I aquire it?

Since it's becoming scarce amongst the game retailers in my city, I picked up my copy yesterday. Left it on a shelf of my media cabinet with it's crisp, shrink-wrapped fineness in full view. Couldn't take it any longer so this morning I secluded it away in the deepest bowels of my study. And now it image burns on...and...on in my mind. This evening it's going to my sisters for safe keeping.  paranoid

If the Team Gizka patch isn't out by Christmas, I'll reward my patience by allowing myself one play through.

Thanks for the feedback on this dmd and Wonton.

I've discovered that Partition Magic is still be sold in my area. Unfortunately now that it's owned by Symantec it costs $99.99 CDN! Just no way in hell I'm going to pay that for a utility I'm going to use a few times.

I've found Partition Expert on the Arcronis site and I can get it for $55 CDN. It's now sold in a software suite bundled with some other useful utilities, so needless to say I'm leaning towards it as my solution.
7366  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Need to Resize a XP Partition; Which Tool? on: May 08, 2007, 10:38:41 PM
I recently did a dual-boot install of Vista on work PC and it went so well that I'm considering the same for my home PC.
However, my home PC only has a single partition that contains my WinXP installation. I've cleared off enough space so that I now have about 105 GB of my total 210 GB's free. I'd like to shrink my current WinXP partition down to about 130 GB, but I'm not sure what's the best utility for doing this. I've used Partition Magic in the past, but I don't even know if it's around anymore.

What's the best utility for shrinking an existing WinXP NTFS partition?

Correct. From the last study I heard, far more auto accidents are caused by fumbling with audio controls, climate controls and beverages than are caused by the operation of cell phones.

I think anyone who's in the market for a 360 right now is foolish to not await the arrival of the 65nm based chip model; even if it doesn't arrive until the holiday season.

Is that timeframe confirmed?

That's a good question. I'm going by Ridah's post in which he quoted the contents of Digitime's April 30th article:
http://www.gamingtrend.com/forums/index.php/topic,19925.0.html
Either way it doesn't matter much to me, as I've made my mind up to not buy a 360 until there's some improvement in quality.

Just a few tidbits about the deal:
  • Microsoft signed the original agreement with Chartered Semiconductor in April 2006.
  • The chips were originally supposed to go into production in Q1 of 2007 but were delayed until mid 2007.
  • China's Commercial Times -apparently not a very reliable source- has claimed that the chips are going into production in May and will be appear in 360's in the Fall.
  • Both the CPU and the GPU will be upgrading to 65nm versions.

Some additonal links I've found:

I think this is more of a sales thing that quality of title thing. I personally am waiting for Super Street Fighter II Turbo before buying any SF II game.

DOH! Serves me right for not visiting the link. retard And if I recall correctly SFII:WW was released much earlier than the other games I mentioned in my previous response.
7371  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Top 5 SNES VC titles on: May 08, 2007, 05:07:05 PM
I only own 3 of those titles but I certainly wouldn't put SFII: WW in the number 3 spot ahead of SCIV or DKC; 1 of the weaker Street Figher titles IMHO. Come to think of it, I wouldn't have that game in a top 5 list considering there's also F-Zero, Legend of the Mystical Ninja and R-Type III to choose amongst.
7372  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: New 360 Buyer: Recommend Elite or Premium on: May 08, 2007, 05:00:02 PM
I don't own a 360 yet, so I've gone over this decision many times. I give the nod to the premium because I won't own a 1080p capable HDTV before the 360 far too short life cycle's over; the same is probably true for most people. And I'm not interested at all in viewing HD DVD's via my 360; didn't view a single DVD via my XBox or PS2.

I think anyone who's in the market for a 360 right now is foolish to not await the arrival of the 65nm based chip model; even if it doesn't arrive until the holiday season. The promise of much better system reliability will be worth the wait alone, plus the possibility of a price drop. I did the same with the original XBox, patiently awaiting the arrival of the S-controller model and I've never looked back; not a single problem in over 4 years and the benefit of not having to use the 'can of ham' controller.

It's traditional; Japanese publications since ancient times have been printed back to front. It has something to do with the way scrolls were held and unrolled when read; same is true for Chinese scrolls/book. In fact reading front to back is a relatively modern, western invention.

If you're referring to my last response, the DS I tested with doesn't have brightness settings; can just turn off the backlight. If however, you're referrring to the DS Lite I swapped with a coworker, I usually ran on 1 setting below the brightest. I found at that setting it was bright enough and battery life was good; in fact I sometimes moved it down a setting which put in on par with the DS. I should explain that I live in the Pacific NW and when I tested the DS Lite it was late Fall. What that means in my city is short days, long nights and overcast skies. Maybe that's what's different from my experience with the DS and Lite from other peoples.  The only time I've found my DS hard to view was in August when I was on business in Tampa FL and I tried to play it on my balcony.

The original wide-style GBAs had absolutely horrible screen brightness since they had no backlight or anything.  The GBA SPs fixed that but I'm not sure it's better than the original DS, although I don't have them to compare.

What I actually bought was the original GBA SP released in March 2003. I errantly  retard  listed GBA in my posts, I've now edited them to read correctly.

Just so we're all on the same page here's what I recall as the GBA and DS release history; not 100% sure about the Micro and vari-light GBA SPs dates.

Jan 2001 (no-backlight GBA) -> Mar 2003 (GBA SP w/backlight) -> Fall 2004 (GBA Micro) -> Nov 2004 (DS) -> Spring  2005 (vari-backlight GBA SP) -> May 2006 (DS Lite)

I turned my son's GBA SP and my DS on this morning for a side -by- side comparison and indeed the DS screen is slightly brighter. I then did a 2nd comparison between my daughters GBA Micro and my DS and the micro is brighter. The difference between the DS and the micro is more noticeable than the difference between the GBA SP and DS.
Either way, both the GBA SP and the DS are adequately bright for me. I can hold either at a comfortable distance and easily view the screens.

Sorry, but it's really a no brainer for me; there's no way, having been released almost 2 years after the original GBA SP, that the DS screen is or was inferior. If you want someone else to add their subjective opinion to your own, go for it. Unfortunately that still won't make you necessarily right. For my own subjective 2 cents, I've spent many hours gaming on my original GBA SP and my DS and I've found the DS screen easier to view. As far as I'm concerned that's good enough for me; I really don't need another forum member to agree with me on this.

Yup, I've noticed. I bought Batallion Wars at an EB store for $10; great game BTW. I've also noticed other titles selling for very cheep. Based on how well the Wii is selling and that it doesn't have much of a library of AA or AAA titles, I'm not sure if this is a wise move. I've also wondered if the price reduced games are new stock or old stock; i.e. are publishers redistributing GC games at low cost to cash in on strong Wii sales or are stores just clearing out old stock?

Wah?  You sure you didn't accidentally have that Lite on one of the first two brightness settings?  On setting 3 or 4 it's literally like night and day compared to the original DS.  When I upgraded I remember noticing a lot of graphical details on Castlevania and Ouendan that I had never been able to see on the original DS.

Agreed, I take issue with the reference of screen comparison being not that different with DS and DS Lite - I actually felt the DS could damage my sons vision that was the sole reason for selling it. Maybe we had a dim one - but i've certainly seen nothing since that has changed my view that a DS screen is not bright enough.

p.s the screen on the GBA was better than our DS - so it was possibly the DS at fault, anyone else care to comment

As I stated in my original post, I bought my DS just after the release of the Lite. It's very possible that the DS I bought is not the same SKU as the original Nov. 2004 model. The only GBA SP screen I've seen that rivals the DS is the micro (very small however) and the GBA SPs that had the light adjustment; Pearl was one of these models. The GBA SP I own is the original spring 2003 SKU with no light adjustment.

Wind waker worked great...although i didnt have the chance to try the gameboy connection...

I didn't see this earlier, otherwise I would have included the quote and my response in my other post.
Anyhow...I can say that I've connected a GBA to the Wii for LOZ:WW and it works perfectly; Tingle is alive and well. My son has also uploaded Pokemons to Pokemon Coliseum from Ruby and Leaf Green via the GBA connectivity cable.

I've never experienced or heard of any BC issues with the Wii other than some people reporting slow downs with the GC re-release of LOZ: Majoras Mask. I seem to recall that this was also an issue on some Cubes.

I don't understand why Nintendo still sell the DS - I always grimace when i'm in the game store overhearing people tossing up between the lite and the original. There really is no competition but to th ecasual observer they seem to similar to be worth the extra.

They still sell the original DS because they are still stocked up at stores, I highly doubt they are still producing them. It was funny, back when I was managing a GameStop and EB Games, every store in the district was loaded with used traded in DS systems and the suckers would NOT sell. If I was GameStop/EB I wouldn't even take them back for trade-in anymore with the Lite out.

I have the original DS which I bought shortly after the release of the Lite. I would never trade it in for a Lite only because my hands are too large for the Lite; playing games on it is a cramped and uncomfortable experience. I realize I'm in the minority, but it's nice that some retailers still carry the original.

I didn't realise the size was that different, I assume you've tried a lite out? Certainly its a no brainer for me the screen on the ds is very poor - the lite almost feels like they turned the light on smile

I swapped my DS with one of my coworkers Lite's for 2 weeks. I found that after a while playing, my hands became sore as I had to bend my index fingers -which are quite long-  too much to operate the shoulder buttons.  Interesting enough the coworker I swapped with also has large hands and has since sold his Lite to a friend and bought an original DS.

I do agree that the screen on the Lite is brighter -not as superior as many claim though- and I like the arrangement of some of the buttons better. Either way the screen on both DS models is significantly better than my original GBA SP. If it's a choice between a brighter screen or playing in comfort, I'd choose the latter any day.

Going to quest up to a new level in DDO
Since Mechassault 2 and SF: Anniversary have become BC I've noticed that their mplay on Live has spiked, so I'll probably fire them up and check Live out.
