Will this be the feature that brings the PSP to sales levels like the DS? I highly doubt it, but it's a neat feature in of itself. Oddly enough, via the BBC News:

Owners of Sony's PlayStation Portable (PSP) handheld console will soon be able to make voice and video calls over a wireless internet connection.

Using a soon-to be-released camera and microphone, gamers will be able to call other PSP owners and some BT phones. The software has been developed by BT and will eventually allow PSP users to call PCs, fixed lines and mobiles.

Initially the service will only be available in the UK and will only work on home or BT wireless hotspots. Currently, there are around 2,000 of these situated in airports, railway stations, hotels and fast food restaurants.

Kinda cool, no? I don't see myself ever using it though.

I really like the idea. It got me thinking; with a built in microphone and WiFi there's no reason this couldn't be done with the DS as well.
Kudos to Sony, or the 3rd party, for coming up with this for the PSP.

What a cheap, bullshit move by Chelios on Moen to sleaze out a penalty! Between him and Bertuzzi I have plenty enough reason to hate the Wings; good riddance!
If ever there was a player that deserved a Lifetime ban for unsportsman like conduct, Chelios fits the bill. God I hope this is his last season.

I hope the Ducks fuck up in the 3rd period of their games against the Sens the way they did tonight. Keep doing that Ducks and the Sens will bring the cup home!

Having bought a few Stanley Cups before the salary cap, they deserve all the hate they get.

Tonight Hasek looks like a suffocating fish out of water the way he's flopping around on the ice. Great to see him get burned for his antics. Can't deny he's got some good net-minding moves but he's been a fluke for too long.

I know that Dark Messiah of Might and Magic only received luke warm reviews. If I recall correctly much of the negative was that the game out of the box was quite bugged.

My question is: has the game been patched to the point where it's now playable and is it worth $10 CDN ($9 US)?

I just noticed that there are several third party titles missing from that list, like Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition (may be a June release), Manhunt 2, Alien Syndrome, and Dewey's Adventure. So I wonder why Nintendo even bothered publishing it? I was reading elsewhere that Nintendo didn't put any M rated titles on the list, interesting no? I dunno, doesn't seem to make any sense to publish a half done release list.

There's definitely some games missing from this list. MP3 and BW2 are day 1 purchses for me. Strangely Space Tycoon also gets my interest, although I know nothing about it.

So the question of can the market support three current-gen systems is still up for debate it seems.

Actually, I think the more relevent question is not whether the market can support 3 game system but whether the market can support any game system that costs $400+ dollars.

I agree, the price is the issue and a big factor in the PS3 and 360's sales numbers slipping. Even the last console gen market -roughly 140 million- was easily big enough to support 3 consoles. If you distribute those numbers evenly you've get about 47 million per console. Most manufacturers start turning profit by at least the 20 millionth unit; was even true for the expensive to build XBox.

And now there's an interview with Brad McQuaid up. It's not as 'doom and gloom' as the other ones, but it's still an interesting read. One thing that caught my eye:

Quote Ok, here's a loaded one. A number of people have said there was one QA member up through at least beta 3 or 4. How did an MMOG survive with one person dedicated to quality assurance.

Brad McQuaid: The original plan was to use Microsoft's vast testing facility. We were to keep a small testing team at Sigil - But one?!

Brad McQuaid:: No. A small team that was very close to the dev team and use the massive facility at Microsoft. When that relationship went south and we were scrambling for money, we simply did not have the room to grow.

Go take a read if you're interested.

I'm sorry but this is just complete unadulterated bullshit! Just about everyone in the MS sphere of influence knows about the McCarthy dev model. This model recommends a ratio of 2 QA per 1 developer. Of course very few dev teams achieve this and often settle for a 1:1 to relationship. But for complete freaking sake Mr. Quaid, 1 person for all of QA!  And at most a lick and promise from MS that you'd get external QA resources!! What total BS! It's just plain knowledge that you never rely on external QA resources.

[Edited] Toned down a bit of the language and removed some content. This whole situation at Sigil has got me worked up to the point where I've got to be careful how I even respond in this thread.

Sony's already started to make the necessary changes and I'm sure Mr. Moore can be jetisoned from the 360 ship as easily as Krazy Ken was tossed from the good ship Playstation.

Why would MS want to get rid of Moore? That guy is awesome, I've always perceived him as being passionate about his job.

Additionally, all of the actual press on Kutaragi was that the guy hung on for years too long because of his political savvy.  They were only able to get rid of him after he'd killed the flagship product, not beforehand.

All of the game console manufacturers IMHO struggle with their change management models. Their markets change so fast that simple mistakes can end up being large blunders. They generally have a 5 year window to make effective and strategic decisions and god forbid if they don't. Even the major personalities we come to criticise and despise all have their pluses. I'm critical of many of these game industry icons, but I still appreciate what they've contributed. When we look back 10, 20, or 30 year from now I'd bet we appreciate the following:

  • Yamauchi (Nintendo): Always realized that they were 1st and foremost a gaming company; they did in fact start out in post WWII war Japan as a game card manufacturer. Yamauchi realized that the software (games) was a continuation of this tradition and as a result they never failed to turn profit with their games under his direction; this ethic continues in Nintendo to this day. He also gave Miyamoto all the rope he wanted...and shigeru responded by never hanging himself once.

  • Kutaragi (Sony): Realized very early that optical media was the way to go and was he ever freaking right. The rest is legend, but his insistence on this led to Sony singlehandedly stealing just about every significant game dev from the Nintendo camp,  which at the time still insisted that the memory cartridge medium was the way to go.

  • Moore: (Sega/Microsoft): Realized the importance of online play and online communities. He had visions about players seamlessly playing and communicating online. I believe Moore even had some hand in Team Sonics creation of the 1st ever online RPG; Phantasy Star Online. Of course his influence in the creation of Xbox Live is well known and appreciated by all of us.

Even though these individuals contributed so much, they all reached a point where they were more of a detriment than an asset to their respective companies. I'm afraid Moore is reached this point now with Microsoft.

Now back on topic... I really wish AAA quality game dev's like this didn't ever exchange blows or weren't drawn into comparison battles. As I've said on other websites in the past, it's like comparing the ripest apple with the ripest orange; both are so damn sweet there's really no point.

And I think I found Sony's response:

According to the latest NPD data, SCEA generated total sales of $271 million in the month of April, buoyed in part by the addition of the PS3 platform, which sold a total of 82K units for the month, as well as the strong performance of the PSP at retail, which saw a 13% year-on-year increase for the month of April, selling 183K units.  The price of the PSP Core system was dropped from $199 to $169 in early April, which has received very positive retailer and consumer response.  PS2 also continued to be a strong performer during the month with unit sales of 194K.

Man...they're not even trying to spin the numbers anymore. frown

So, let me ask something out of left field - what if Nintendo just folded last generation? Imagine if there was no Wii at all. Would the gaming population purchase more or less overall consoles? In other words - would people have bought a 360/PS3 because it was the only thing on the block? Or would the price points (still) be keeping people away?

The rate of increase wouldn't be as high as it's become obvious that Nintendo's bringing in customers that likely didn't own any console last gen. But even without Nintendo the market would still be growing as it has every console gen since the crash of the early 80's. MS and Sony would both have greater numbers respectively but there's no doubt in my mind that Microsoft would still be ahead and they would be maintaining the lead. The real difference would be in Japan where Sony would have an exclusive market and sown up deals with most Japanese dev's. With many Japanese exclusive it's likely Sony would have started to pull even at the end of this console gen.
But we haven't seen a 2 console gen where a 3rd party didn't wade in to the fray. If the Big 'N' had bowed out I wouldn't have been surprised at all to see Sega or a previous player enter the market; maybe even a new player.

Stocks were plummeting and everyone was calling for them to go 3rd party; it's amazing what a change in leadership can do. Sony's already started to make the necessary changes and I'm sure Mr. Moore can be jetisoned from the 360 ship as easily as Krazy Ken was tossed from the good ship Playstation.

A $50 price drop for the 360 would be perfect for MS this holiday season to battle the Wii, along with the insane amount of high-profile titles.

I'm afraid $50 by the Holiday isn't quite going to cut it. It remains to be be seen how much Mass Effect, Halo 3 and GTA will spike sales but I'd think - $75 US and - $100 CDN are more in line. And they'll need to do it months before the festive season; it really should be happening now.

Yeah way to be MS, good thing you didn't start production of the 65nm chips in Jan as originally planned and waited until this month. After all you wouldn't want to be delivering lower cost 360's right about now and risk leaving the lofty heights of PS3 elite-dom so soon.

And great job introducing the Elite when the majority of consumers have made it crystal clear they want lower cost gaming systems.

Oh and very good job Mr. Moore belittling your manufacturing quality issues. Your verbal spin doctoring was superb; would have even made Krazy Ken blush.

Interesting enough, people said the same thing about the DS vs PSP battle up until around the release of the Lite. And if you look at their system specs you couldn't help but arrive at the conclusion that the PSP is more of a next-gen handheld. Hell the PSP even has a larger library of quality games than the DS, yet the DS continues to outsell it at more than a 2:1 ratio. WTF indeed.

We already own Super Mario 64, Donkey Kong Country, Toe Jam and Earl, Star Fox 64, Dungeon Explorer, Bomberman 93 and Gunstar Heroes. I can say that the games that my son and daughter have enjoyed the most are Toe Jam and Earl and Star Fox 64.

Here's the possible choices I have so far: R-Type IIISuper Mario WorldGradius IIIBio-Hazard Battle, Legend of the Mystical Ninja

now it's 39 with 6 of those tentatively finished.  I'm guessing we'll see it come fall.

Which leads me to sing....

39 reported bugs in the code,
39 reported bugs,
Squash one down and test it all'round,
38 reported bugs in the code!

If we all keep singing this song this sucker will be out in no time flat!

I like aviation based war films best; unfortunately there's not many of them. Some of my favorites:

12 O'Clock High Gregory Pecks performance as a squadron leader was amazing. The actor that played the squadron's agitator won the supporting actor academy award.
Bridges of Toko Ri It's rumoured that Mickey Rooney's performance as an Irish-American chopper rescue pilot in the Korean war is the reason why similar pilots came to be known as Jolly Greens in Nam. Either way his performance as a love struck, feisty, fighter is very good and funny.
The Blue Max
Flight of the Intruder The action sequences involving taking out SAM sites are worth watching it alone.
Tora Tora Tora My only regret about this film is that they didn't let Kurosawa remain until the end as director of the Japanese portion.
Fly Boys Not the best but still good and it's got Jean Reno; nuff said.
The Memphis Belle
The Flying Leather Necks Hey it's got the Duke.

My favorite Land based war movies:

Bridge Over the River Kwai
Lawrence of Arabia
A Bridge too Far Other than The Silence of the Lambs, IMHO this is Hopkins best peformance. Michael Caine, Sean Connery and Robert Redford are also very good.
Apocalypse Now
Saving Private Ryan
We Were Soldiers I agree that it's probably the best war movie ever filmed. So truthfully told that I felt just as sorry for the Viet Minh soldiers.

The hot rumour I heard was that there was going to be a Ken Kutaragi character introduced. His only offensive ability is rumoured to be a word belch attack in which he can spew forth a salvo of offensive and misconstrued sentences. This attack will momentarily stun all opponents and if executed in rapid sequence can even leave them comatose.  He'll also apparently have the weakest defense of any character, so you can hit him, and hit him, and hit him...
If this rumour proves true, I'm so IN on this game Day 1!!!  dude

When I saw last month's sales in Japan, it was obvious things were going extremely bad for Sony.  PS2 sales exceeded PS3 sales... if the PS3 isn't even going to do well on home turf, things are seriously bad.  I forgot to look, but I'll bet the PSP is outselling the PS3.

It did last month. By a lot.

We shouldn't loose sight of the fact that even with it's recent price drop the PSP is an expensive handheld. Which means Sony can still turn a decent profit from it's sales. Ironically, it's beginning to look more and more like the PSP is going to be Sony's only saving grace this console gen.

FF:CC on the DS is genius, though.  The multiplayer concept CC was going for was released a generation too soon.

I agree, I'm very much looking forward to the DS version of this game.  I only rented the original FF:CC cube game because I didn't have enough friends with GBA's at the time to play the game to it's fullest potential.
IMO many of the GBA-GC connectivity concepts could be effectively implemented using the DS's dual screen and WiFi capabilities. Interesting enough, the GBA-GC connectivity program was the 1st initiative of the new Nintendo management team that has since brought us the DS and the Wii.
