Sony's already started to make the necessary changes and I'm sure Mr. Moore can be jetisoned from the 360 ship as easily as Krazy Ken was tossed from the good ship Playstation.

Why would MS want to get rid of Moore? That guy is awesome, I've always perceived him as being passionate about his job.

Well...how about because of late he's had an excellent knack of putting his foot in his mouth shoving his foot down his throat. And oh yeah his impeccable track record; -cough- Sega -cough-! And how much do you want to bet that his bunglings and screw ups led to the delays in 65nm chip manufacturing. I'm not saying he's the only person that should go, but he certainly wouldn't be a bad start.

I'm not a big RTS fan so I can only say pretty good.  I would love to see an RPG set in that world though.

Ceekay, damn...that's an excellent idea. I could really see it working as an MMORPG that featured Realm Vs Realm warfare. Dorfs wielding explosive Molotov cocktails FTW!!! smile thumbsup

Now back on topic... I really wish AAA quality game dev's like this didn't ever exchange blows or weren't drawn into comparison battles. As I've said on other websites in the past, it's like comparing the ripest apple with the ripest orange; both are so damn sweet there's really no point.

And I think I found Sony's response:

Quote
According to the latest NPD data, SCEA generated total sales of $271 million in the month of April, buoyed in part by the addition of the PS3 platform, which sold a total of 82K units for the month, as well as the strong performance of the PSP at retail, which saw a 13% year-on-year increase for the month of April, selling 183K units.  The price of the PSP Core system was dropped from $199 to $169 in early April, which has received very positive retailer and consumer response.  PS2 also continued to be a strong performer during the month with unit sales of 194K.

Man...they're not even trying to spin the numbers anymore. frown

So, let me ask something out of left field - what if Nintendo just folded last generation? Imagine if there was no Wii at all. Would the gaming population purchase more or less overall consoles? In other words - would people have bought a 360/PS3 because it was the only thing on the block? Or would the price points (still) be keeping people away?

The rate of increase wouldn't be as high as it's become obvious that Nintendo's bringing in customers that likely didn't own any console last gen. But even without Nintendo the market would still be growing as it has every console gen since the crash of the early 80's. MS and Sony would both have greater numbers respectively but there's no doubt in my mind that Microsoft would still be ahead and they would be maintaining the lead. The real difference would be in Japan where Sony would have an exclusive market and sown up deals with most Japanese dev's. With many Japanese exclusive it's likely Sony would have started to pull even at the end of this console gen.
But we haven't seen a 2 console gen where a 3rd party didn't wade in to the fray. If the Big 'N' had bowed out I wouldn't have been surprised at all to see Sega or a previous player enter the market; maybe even a new player.

Well if Nintendo's any indication they'll both bounce back. Don't forget that Yamauchi and gang had Big 'N' on it's knees and almost in it's dead throws as recent as 5 years ago. Stocks were plummeting and everyone was calling for them to go 3rd party; it's amazing what a change in leadership can do. Sony's already started to make the necessary changes and I'm sure Mr. Moore can be jetisoned from the 360 ship as easily as Krazy Ken was tossed from the good ship Playstation.

A $50 price drop for the 360 would be perfect for MS this holiday season to battle the Wii, along with the insane amount of high-profile titles.

I'm afraid $50 by the Holiday isn't quite going to cut it. It remains to be be seen how much Mass Effect, Halo 3 and GTA will spike sales but I'd think - $75 US and - $100 CDN are more in line. And they'll need to do it months before the festive season; it really should be happening now.

Many thanks for the feeback. I just realized I currently have 400 VC points so if I get 1000 more I'll have just enough for a SNES and a TG16 game. I wasn't considering TG16 games, but your suggestion was timely and just the ticket.

Oh, and Microsoft? You need a price drop on your console NOW. Do NOT wait any longer - the fact that you got beaten by both the PS2 and PSP is just sad.

Yeah way to be MS, good thing you didn't start production of the 65nm chips in Jan as originally planned and waited until this month. After all you wouldn't want to be delivering lower cost 360's right about now and risk leaving the lofty heights of PS3 elite-dom so soon.

And great job introducing the Elite when the majority of consumers have made it crystal clear they want lower cost gaming systems.

Oh and very good job Mr. Moore belittling your manufacturing quality issues. Your verbal spin doctoring was superb; would have even made Krazy Ken blush.

Job well done finger

Interesting enough, people said the same thing about the DS vs PSP battle up until around the release of the Lite. And if you look at their system specs you couldn't help but arrive at the conclusion that the PSP is more of a next-gen handheld. Hell the PSP even has a larger library of quality games than the DS, yet the DS continues to outsell it at more than a 2:1 ratio. WTF indeed.

My only guess it that they're being bought by people who can't find or afford a Wii. In all honesty, it's not a bad purchase if your eventual goal is to own a Wii. With 100% BC your investment in any GC games is protected.

The PS3 numbers are shocking, just no way in hell I ever thought it would sell less than 100k units in any given month less than 6 months after it's release! eek And the 360 being outsold by the Wii by a 2:1 ratio is also very surprising.

I've promised my kids that we could purchase 2 VC games this weekend.  I want to narrow the choices down so that we don't end up with games we regret. I'm also restricting choices to games that support at least 2 person mplay and I'm mostly focusing on Super Nintendo and Genesis.

We already own Super Mario 64, Donkey Kong Country, Toe Jam and Earl, Star Fox 64, Dungeon Explorer, Bomberman 93 and Gunstar Heroes. I can say that the games that my son and daughter have enjoyed the most are Toe Jam and Earl and Star Fox 64.

Here's the possible choices I have so far: R-Type IIISuper Mario WorldGradius IIIBio-Hazard Battle, Legend of the Mystical Ninja

If anyone can give a nod or thumbs up to any of the games in my list of choices I'd very much appreciate your feedback. Of if there's another game you could suggest that meets our criteria, that would be great too. smile

There's lots of great shooting action in Gunstar Heroes and many people, myself included, consider it one of the best VC games to date. I have Bomberman 93 and I've enjoyed it a lot,  on the other hand my kids haven't enjoyed it much at all.
I haven't ever played R-Type III or Gradius III, but I've heard both are good. I've also heard that Bio-Hazard Battle is a good shooter, but again I haven't personally played it.

BTW interesting that you posted this, because I was going to create a post requesting feedback on which of these 3 latter games was the better. So look for the feedback I get in my post.

I was specifically thinking of the intricate timing for swinging and jumping that the TR series has always demanded. I'm just not sure how well that will work with a motion sensing scheme. But as I said above, if they pull it off power to them.

I like aviation based war films best; unfortunately there's not many of them. Some of my favorites:

12 O'Clock High Gregory Pecks performance as a squadron leader was amazing. The actor that played the squadron's agitator won the supporting actor academy award.
Bridges of Toko Ri It's rumoured that Mickey Rooney's performance as an Irish-American chopper rescue pilot in the Korean war is the reason why similar pilots came to be known as Jolly Greens in Nam. Either way his performance as a love struck, feisty, fighter is very good and funny.
The Blue Max
Flight of the Intruder The action sequences involving taking out SAM sites are worth watching it alone.
Tora Tora Tora My only regret about this film is that they didn't let Kurosawa remain until the end as director of the Japanese portion.
Fly Boys Not the best but still good and it's got Jean Reno; nuff said.
The Memphis Belle
The Flying Leather Necks Hey it's got the Duke.

My favorite Land based war movies:

Bridge Over the River Kwai
Lawrence of Arabia
A Bridge too Far Other than The Silence of the Lambs, IMHO this is Hopkins best peformance. Michael Caine, Sean Connery and Robert Redford are also very good.
Apocalypse Now
Saving Private Ryan
We Were Soldiers I agree that it's probably the best war movie ever filmed. So truthfully told that I felt just as sorry for the Viet Minh soldiers.

The hot rumour I heard was that there was going to be a Ken Kutaragi character introduced. His only offensive ability is rumoured to be a word belch attack in which he can spew forth a salvo of offensive and misconstrued sentences. This attack will momentarily stun all opponents and if executed in rapid sequence can even leave them comatose.  He'll also apparently have the weakest defense of any character, so you can hit him, and hit him, and hit him...
If this rumour proves true, I'm so IN on this game Day 1!!!  dude

It did last month. By a lot.

We shouldn't loose sight of the fact that even with it's recent price drop the PSP is an expensive handheld. Which means Sony can still turn a decent profit from it's sales. Ironically, it's beginning to look more and more like the PSP is going to be Sony's only saving grace this console gen.

I agree, I'm very much looking forward to the DS version of this game.  I only rented the original FF:CC cube game because I didn't have enough friends with GBA's at the time to play the game to it's fullest potential.
IMO many of the GBA-GC connectivity concepts could be effectively implemented using the DS's dual screen and WiFi capabilities. Interesting enough, the GBA-GC connectivity program was the 1st initiative of the new Nintendo management team that has since brought us the DS and the Wii.

I find that 10 games = $300 off, but a whole console and 3 games is only $100 off to be a little bizarre.  Are you sure that's right?

Yes, as stated in the EB Canada GameDays promotion flyer; valid from April 27th - May 31st, PS3 for 399 with a 10 game trade in. Also should be noted that EB currently only gives $75 CDN trade in value on an XBox and less for the PS2 & GC. So the $100 credit for pre-gen console and 3 games is not a bad deal at least for the PS2 and GC. I also think the 399 offer is only a $250 saving as I believe EB Canada still retails the PS3 for $649.

Is the PS3 retailing for 699 in Canada?  Because otherwise the math is off.

Just a few points of info to clear things up:
Firstly: the PS3 is selling for 649 at EB stores in Canada, but it's selling for $699 at other retailers; BestBuy, Futurehop, etc...
Secondly: The GameDays promo just advertises the PS3 for $399 with the trade in of 10 games and doesn't make any mention of $300 off.

If you're thinking that a PS3 from EB is cheaper in Canada than it in the US after exchange, you're thoughts are correct. According to a local EB Manager, after the cheaper 20 GB PS3 was cancelled by Sony Canada, EB made the corporate decision to partially subsidize the 60 GB model by maintaining the original release date price. Their hope is to recoup profit loss through increased PS3 and PS2 game sales.

So in a nutshell; does EB Canada recognize that Sony Canada's Marketing team are inept idiots? Yup.

It's also an absolute blast to play together with her even if only to share something from my youth with her. This and GH2 are currently two of her favorite games!

A few surprises, at least for me, in that they announced that they're developing a Final Fantasy Tactics 2 for the DS.

Actually they're developing a Final Fantasy Advance Tactics.  Not a big difference to some but a HUGE difference to me.

Canuck you're abolutely correct; my mistake in omitting 'advanced'. This is a continuation of the GBA FFT game and not an offspring of the PS FFT game.

1up podcast, they were at the press event, couldn't talk about it exactly, but they pretty much gave it away by saying something like "oh yeah, you know the new kingdom hearts is coming out" yeah look for it on a handheld maybe... <then a lot more softly> maybe on the psp?  But who knows?"

Still surprising to me that they'd be bringing this to the PSP when they already have KH:CoM on the GBA. They could use the existing code base to considerably lessen the development effort for a DS version. Plus the fact that the GBA game was a decent game to begin with and sold quite well.

Yeah I will buy a PSP for this if the game turns out good.

Same here, this will be the game that finally pushes me to purchase the PSP. I'll also await some reviews before making the jump.

The 2 Ninja games are tempting even though I generally don't purchase NES or TGrafx16 games. I haven't tried Legend of the Mystical Ninja yet so I'll likely get it instead. I also own Pac-man Vs for the Cube so I'll be passing on Pac-Man.
All things considered,  a good VC offering this week.
