have you ever played MiG Alley?  it's a jet dogfighting sim set in the Korean war...not quite the era you're looking for, but a great flight sim in any case.

Although Mig Alley was an outstanding flight sim in it's day -still has one of the best dynamic campaigns to this day- it's definitely showing it's age. I still have it installed and occassionaly play it, but I much prefer the Korean war mods that were created for Wings Over Vietnam and other sims. MA had a significant patch created for it by a user mod group named BDG, but unfortunatley online play is still completely pooched. Despite the excellent work of the BDG group the sim is prone to random crashes which unfortunately can pooch a lenghty campaign. The BDG group is also no longer creating mods for it and the original developer -Rowan- went out of business long ago.

I really really don't understand why the sport isn't more popular in America, it's so much more fun to watch than NASCAR.  Better crashes, too.

Hell, watching golf is more exciting than NASCAR. Circuit races are great but not as fun on tv; rally races are great. I love rally racing sims, sounds like this one's good as long as they didn't make the controls too far from simulation.

Well...if you like left hand turns, NASCAR is very exiting!  Roll Eyes

I went looking for the PC version of this game on the website. It's not listed on the front gaming page, in fact it's not even listed on the front page of the PC games or 360 games section. This is quite rare for a newly released game of this caliber. It's as if they've decided before hand that this game won't be a seller.   icon_eek

I haven't played one since Lock-On, which I thought was pretty good... I mostly liked the A10 missions.

I was particularly interested any good vietnam jet sims.

IMHO the best Vietnam era jet sim is Wings Over Vietnam by Third Wire Software. This sim was developed by TK, the famed developer that previously worked on LongBow 2 and European Air War. You can get it in retail or purchase it from the site; last time I checked it was $29. This games is definitely a simulation, but it's not as deep and detailed as LOMAC or Falcon AF; which IMO is a good thing. If you're looking for an equivalent to either or those, I'm afraid you're SOL in regards to a Vietnam theme. This game is supported very well by the developer; they've released no less that 3 major patches many of which have added additional features.

The user community support for WOV is just mind boggling, including a massive amount of free and some very high quality pay-for add-ons; Yankee Air Pirate being the most significant. There's also multiplay capabilities via HyperLobby, but to the best of my recollection it's limited to dogfighting and 2 player co-op missions. Another thing to consider about Vietnam era sims is that you won't get the advanced BVR radar and IR weapon capabilities that you have in a modern sim like LOMAC or Falcon AF. BVR weaponry was very new in the Vietnam airwar and wasn't terribly reliable. These limitations are modeled realistically in WOV and make for a challenging game.

If you want more info on the game, the forums on or are excellent sources. If you plan on playing it and want to get into some multiplay, PM me. I personally love going up against Mig 19's and 21's in my CF-5A  smile

Damn, that game looks does look very impressive! I love the Tree Ents that you can climb on in that platforming stage. I still think I'm going with Legend of the Mystical Ninja before this game, mostly because it has mplay. Of course I won't be getting either of these 2 until I've 1st downloaded Streets of Rage 2. smile

Just a bit off topic -my apologies- but based upon how many people here are saying they're buying Mario Party 8 or Forza 2 this week, I'm predicting that both of these games do in excess of 1/4 million in NA sales before the end of May; maybe even 1/2 million!

28 May - Kid Chameleon - Sega Megadrive
28 May - JJ & Jeff - TurboGrafx-16

Thanks Purge.

Not a very good VC week unfortunately, especially coming on the heels of last weeks knockout releases.  I've been told to avoid JJ & Jeff at all costs and that Kid Chameleon had very bleh graphics even for it's time and so-so gameplay.
Actraiser however makes up for the other 2 and it's a game I'm very much looking forward to; coworker said it was extreme eye candy back in the day. I'm just not sure I'll buy it instead of The Secret of the Mystical Ninja.

I have 9 VC games and yes the only game I regret buying is also Dungeon Explorer, but for $6 I not crying. I've been very surprised at the quality and overall fun factor of the games I've bought. I've also been surprised at how difficult many of them are. I didn't personally own any of the 16 bit systems so most VC games are new to me. In fact other than Super Mario 64, Star Fox 64  and Donkey Kong Country all are 1st time experiences. Here's the games I own:

Donkey Kong Country
Super Mario 64
Super Mario World
Gunstar Heroes
Ninja Spirit
Star Fox 64
Bomberman 93
Toe Jam and Earl
Dungeon Explorer

I'm planning on buying Streets of Rage 2 and Secret of the Mystical Ninja within the next 2 weeks.

BTW: Does anyone know what this weeks VC game release are?

I haven't raced a Colin McRae game since CMR2, so this holds some interest for me. I don't have a 360 or PS3, so I'd have to get this for the PC. I prefer realistic rally racing simulation games for the PC; Rally Trophy being my favorite.
I'm wondering if this game, like some other middle of the road racing games before it, will be open enough for the mod community to tweak it's realism. I remember the good work that was done back in the day for Mobil 1 Rally. If it can't be tweaked, this might be a game I pick up when I eventually get my 360.

You're right about these game types being in very short supply on the 360 and I doubt we'll ever see many true flight sims on it. Something to be aware of however, in the 2nd 1/2 of the 360's life cycle, RPG, adventure and some MMORPG's will likely start to appear just as they did for the XBox. That being said, the 1/2 point of the life cycle doesn't start until Nov. 15th.

I also favour the game types you've listed although I can also enjoy a good shooter, hockey and soccer game. I'm holding off on buying my 360 until the Fall when as least some good story-based RPGs' will be releasing. There's also the possibility of the new, better quality 65nmn chip SKU's arriving by then.

Will this be the feature that brings the PSP to sales levels like the DS? I highly doubt it, but it's a neat feature in of itself. Oddly enough, via the BBC News:

Owners of Sony's PlayStation Portable (PSP) handheld console will soon be able to make voice and video calls over a wireless internet connection.

Using a soon-to be-released camera and microphone, gamers will be able to call other PSP owners and some BT phones. The software has been developed by BT and will eventually allow PSP users to call PCs, fixed lines and mobiles.

Initially the service will only be available in the UK and will only work on home or BT wireless hotspots. Currently, there are around 2,000 of these situated in airports, railway stations, hotels and fast food restaurants.

Kinda cool, no? I don't see myself ever using it though.

I really like the idea. It got me thinking; with a built in microphone and WiFi there's no reason this couldn't be done with the DS as well.
Kudos to Sony, or the 3rd party, for coming up with this for the PSP.

What a cheap, bullshit move by Chelios on Moen to sleaze out a penalty! Between him and Bertuzzi I have plenty enough reason to hate the Wings; good riddance!
If ever there was a player that deserved a Lifetime ban for unsportsman like conduct, Chelios fits the bill. God I hope this is his last season.

Actually, I think the more relevent question is not whether the market can support 3 game system but whether the market can support any game system that costs $400+ dollars.

I agree, the price is the issue and a big factor in the PS3 and 360's sales numbers slipping. Even the last console gen market -roughly 140 million- was easily big enough to support 3 consoles. If you distribute those numbers evenly you've get about 47 million per console. Most manufacturers start turning profit by at least the 20 millionth unit; was even true for the expensive to build XBox.

And now there's an interview with Brad McQuaid up. It's not as 'doom and gloom' as the other ones, but it's still an interesting read. One thing that caught my eye:

Quote Ok, here's a loaded one. A number of people have said there was one QA member up through at least beta 3 or 4. How did an MMOG survive with one person dedicated to quality assurance.

Brad McQuaid: The original plan was to use Microsoft's vast testing facility. We were to keep a small testing team at Sigil - But one?!

Brad McQuaid:: No. A small team that was very close to the dev team and use the massive facility at Microsoft. When that relationship went south and we were scrambling for money, we simply did not have the room to grow.

Go take a read if you're interested.

I'm sorry but this is just complete unadulterated bullshit! Just about everyone in the MS sphere of influence knows about the McCarthy dev model. This model recommends a ratio of 2 QA per 1 developer. Of course very few dev teams achieve this and often settle for a 1:1 to relationship. But for complete freaking sake Mr. Quaid, 1 person for all of QA!  And at most a lick and promise from MS that you'd get external QA resources!! What total BS! It's just plain knowledge that you never rely on external QA resources.

[Edited] Toned down a bit of the language and removed some content. This whole situation at Sigil has got me worked up to the point where I've got to be careful how I even respond in this thread.

Sony's already started to make the necessary changes and I'm sure Mr. Moore can be jetisoned from the 360 ship as easily as Krazy Ken was tossed from the good ship Playstation.

Why would MS want to get rid of Moore? That guy is awesome, I've always perceived him as being passionate about his job.

Additionally, all of the actual press on Kutaragi was that the guy hung on for years too long because of his political savvy.  They were only able to get rid of him after he'd killed the flagship product, not beforehand.

All of the game console manufacturers IMHO struggle with their change management models. Their markets change so fast that simple mistakes can end up being large blunders. They generally have a 5 year window to make effective and strategic decisions and god forbid if they don't. Even the major personalities we come to criticise and despise all have their pluses. I'm critical of many of these game industry icons, but I still appreciate what they've contributed. When we look back 10, 20, or 30 year from now I'd bet we appreciate the following:

  • Yamauchi (Nintendo): Always realized that they were 1st and foremost a gaming company; they did in fact start out in post WWII war Japan as a game card manufacturer. Yamauchi realized that the software (games) was a continuation of this tradition and as a result they never failed to turn profit with their games under his direction; this ethic continues in Nintendo to this day. He also gave Miyamoto all the rope he wanted...and shigeru responded by never hanging himself once.

  • Kutaragi (Sony): Realized very early that optical media was the way to go and was he ever freaking right. The rest is legend, but his insistence on this led to Sony singlehandedly stealing just about every significant game dev from the Nintendo camp,  which at the time still insisted that the memory cartridge medium was the way to go.

  • Moore: (Sega/Microsoft): Realized the importance of online play and online communities. He had visions about players seamlessly playing and communicating online. I believe Moore even had some hand in Team Sonics creation of the 1st ever online RPG; Phantasy Star Online. Of course his influence in the creation of Xbox Live is well known and appreciated by all of us.

Even though these individuals contributed so much, they all reached a point where they were more of a detriment than an asset to their respective companies. I'm afraid Moore is reached this point now with Microsoft.
