7241  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Wait a minute? So now you don't need friend codes to play online? I am confused on: June 12, 2007, 03:29:24 AM
The way I read this is that EA will be providing their own servers for Madden 2008 Wii. Which is what they did for PS2 releases and initially for a few XBox games. Hosting you own server for online multiplay in the Big 'N' universe isn't exactly new, as that's what Sega did with PSO for the Cube. From what I understand, only games that want to use the online service developed by Big 'N' and Gamespy will require friend codes.
If I were to speculate, I'd say  this won't be the last time Big 'N' bows to pressure from big game dev's / publishers that aren't thrilled with the friend code system.

Playing through Parallels is painful.  I'm attempting to play Baldur's Gate 2 on my MacBook (1.83Ghz Core Duo, 2GB RAM), and it is *sloooow*.  And this is almost a 10 year old game, without 3d acceleration.

This is exactly what a coworker experienced with Parallels for virtually any game he tried; far too slow to be playable.
OpenGL support, from the best of my recollection, has been on the MAC for quite some time. I believe this is the API that games like Neverwinter Nights 2 and WoW have used. Unfortunately OpenGL now only constitutes a minority of the games on the PC, so Apple has a steep hill to climb in luring 3rd party support.

i hardly touch my Wii now(last turned it on 2 weeks ago to see the VC titles).....maybe if they brought some decent games out for it....maybe that would change

Having almost played POP:RS to completion -damn that last boss- currently unlocking the crypt in MK:A and my ongoing game play with DBZ: BT2, SSX Blur and a slew of VC titles, the Wii is about the only console in my home that's on these days. I don't own a 360 or PS3, just a XBox and PS2, so that might be the difference between myself and others. Although there are still great games coming out for the PS2 as many threads in this forum would attest. I just prefer the gameplay on the Wii more.

And now updated with VC games. Man, was Sonic 2 a classic..

Since Sonic 2 and all of the other VC releases this week are also available on Gametap, I'll download them there. I played a number of classics on Gametap this weekend since I now have my PS2 controller plugged into my PC and I was very surprised at how well they played. Suffice to say that for now on in I'll be downloading all of my Sega Genesis classics from Gametap as opposed to VC.

Since I just subsribed to Gametap I don't think I'll be buying much until summers end. Depending on what the VC releases are this week, I might buy 1 or 2 of them. Scarface for the Wii is very temping as the initial review scores are favourable; sounds like another game that's got the controls right.

I'm going to download Tomb Raider: Anniversary for PC and get a start with it.
Also going to unlock some more of the crypt in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon on the Wii by waggling mii Wiimote.  icon_lol
And if I need a quick relief from serious gaming I'm going to fire up Donkey Kong Country 2 or Gunstar Heroes on VC.

Kevin that's an awesome idea, but where do you get such a device?

I got mine at Radio Shack but it was a couple of years ago so I don't know if this is the same one, but mine works great.  Not available online but check their inventory to see if it's in stock at a store near you.

Kevin,

Many thanks for the info; it lead to me finding an adaptor. Radioshack Canada's stores are now Circuit City Source stores and I always forget to check them for things like this. I found one -Sector 7 brand- but unfortunately it was about $5 more than the one you listed. It does however come with WinXP drivers on a mini-cd and it has a 1 year warranty. All things considered, it's still much cheaper than buying a new USB gamepad.

Personally, I'll be using either the Classic Controller or a Gamecube one (if I want rumble). No way I'm doing any kind of waggles to play a fighting game.

Actually, the waggle in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon is surprisingly effective.

I agree. I'm currently playing MK:A and for the most part the controls work very well. I haven't tried, or felt the need, to use the classic controller yet, but I'm intrigued enough to give it a go. I still think the fighting controls are superior in DBZ:BT2, but MK:A is still a good effort by Midway.
If the developer of DBZ:BT2 and Midway can get the Wiimote & nunchuck right, I have no doubt that Big 'N' will come up with something kick-ass for SSB:B.

As much as I'm enjoying Anniversary and would like to see a Tomb Raider 2 remake (doubtful I agree), I would still rather get a sequel to Legend.  It was one of my favorite games of last year.  Loved it.  Had some issues but I think those can be easily addressed in a sequel.

plus they can't leave us hanging!

what 'hanging'? i hated the game so much i quit about halfway - no hanging here...

the ending left some plot threads wide open and all but screamed 'to be continued'.  too bad you didn't like the game though.

I really liked TR:Legends on the XBox, in fact I'm currently on my 2nd play through and I just started to play the PC version. I'd definitely be IN for any sequel.

I still haven't decided on what system I'll get TR:Anniversary for. TR:L for PC looks drop-dead gorgeous on my gaming rig, but I don't like the control via my Logitech gamepad or mouse & keyboard. I appreciate the feedback here by those that are playing the PS2 version. From what I'm hearing and reading the graphics are very good for a PS2 game. I also have to consider that my kids will be playing it, so the PS2 controller would be a plus.
7254  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: [WoW] 3-Day banned again! on: June 08, 2007, 05:07:12 PM
I guess I have a different perspective on things. I go back to the Pen & Paper RPG days when everyone sat at a table, got drunk and tried their damnest to out-silly the other person with their truly terrible medieval accents. In the better groups it was like writing a collaborative fantasy novel; a lot of work but also a great amount of fun. I see MMORPG's as a continuation of this gaming legacy and see little or no point in spending your hard earned cash every month unless you're going to make an effort to role play on a RP server.
There is a after all a reason why these games are called Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games.

Anyhow, back on topic...I can sympathize with anyone who's gotten the bad end of the Ban stick. This just seems to be an unfortunate consequence of MMORPGs with large populations. I remember when this occurred in the early days of EQ and I'm not at all surprised if it's occurring in WoW.

And here's the link to the actual Next Generation article: Console Price Cuts: The Evidence
http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5883&Itemid=2

It makes you wonder if Microsoft and Sony are even paying attention to such blatant historical evidence...or are they residing in their respective fantasy worlds. Based on the statistics and market trends this article illustrates, it's very apparent that both MS's and Sony's new gen consoles are very overpriced. It's also obvious they need to issue price cuts; not at Christmas, not next quarter, not next month, but NOW!
If this isn't a case of writing on the wall in big, bold letters staring Harris and Moore in the face, I don't know what is!

Yesterday I did my weekly wii-kly rounds of checking Canadian retail sites for Wii's for a friend that now lives in the Bay area and who's had no luck locating one in SF. So I did the usual check of futureshop.ca, bestbuy.ca and toysrus.ca, and low and behold to my amazement there's 7 Wii's in stock at futureshop.ca. This was a 1st as I've never seen anything listed other than a big '0' or 'Not in Stock'. So I immediately place my order and nab one; yeah my friend will no longer go for want! smile  As soon a I completed my order I noticed the stock was now at 3.

I immediately holler over to a coworker who's just walked into room and he jumps on the futureshop site and...and.... nada, zilch, zero; not a single Wii left! I figure about 2-1/2 minutes transpired before the stock was completely depleted; hence the name of my post. You here about sell rates like this being boasted about by Big 'N' brass, but it's always amazing when you see it with your own eyes.  icon_eek

Your wish might be granted as they are releasing Neo Geo games on the VC later this year.

Really...when was that announced? I've heard mention of that before, but I thought it was only a flippant rumor. If it's now been confirmed that's fantastic!! Fatal Fury would be a nice VC addition and SF:3rd Strike with a classic controller would be sweet indeed!

Jason Ocampo (of Gamespot) reviewed it.

Review is on the short side, but it's a pretty good read I guess.

7.5/10

Considering it's GS that gave it a 7.5, it's probably a decent game and very likely worth playing. GS scores are so tight these days, a game scoring 7.0 or higher usually warrants some consideration.
I don't even bother with demos for space or flight sims anymore as support for 3rd party input devices is usually pooched but often working in the finished game. If the price is as low in my neck of the woods as others have reported and some other favourable reviews come in, I'll probably give this a whirl.

BTW: For anyone getting killed from the get go. I've found it helpful to use a voice command utility in space or flight simulators. Just too much flying by the seat of you pants to be fidgeting with a keyboard. A hotas with lots of mappable buttons is even better, but unfortunately costly.
7260  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Microsoft trying to kill PC gaming? on: June 06, 2007, 06:16:03 PM
I can agree with some things in the article. Definitely agree that making already released Xbox or 360 games dependend on Vista and DirectX 10 is one of the stupidest things MS has done in some time. They should do what Bioware did with JE and release Halo 2 so that it runs on what people currently have, not what they might have 3-6 months from now; I mean WTF!! The comments about the state of support on Shadowrun leads me to believe that FASA's status as a MS game studio is very tenuous at the moment. And all of this article reminds me that Ed DeVries (or was it DeFries) is sorely being missed at the games division.

And yes Games for Windows Live should be called Win Live or maybe even Vista Live; the current name is just a marketing nigthmare. I also agree that the right and honest thing to do with Win Live would be to make it a socketable API that other services such as Xfire and Steam could plug into. But  based upon the ca$h cow that Live currently is for MS, I'm quite sure we'll never see this.

I ditto some others here that we're not going to see other OS's make significant inroads on PC gaming. Having watched DirectX over the years handedly beat Glide, OpenGL and the short lived VMRx API's I don't see any real competition to it in the foreseeable future. DirectX is why developers have stuck with Windows and the delivery of XNA has only strengthened this further. If there's one thing MS gets right its the dev tools and game Dev's love to use them. IMHO this is the reason why the XBox was able to build up such a large catalog of games; god knows it certainly wasn't the market share.

It did take about 20 hours to download but it is after all 4.7 GB's.
I love the look and feel of the service's gui; more functional and better looking than any of the console dashboards I've used. And I really like that it will run in a perfect widescreen resolution and aspect on my HDTV.

I have a question; if you upgrade to the full product, are there limits to the number of games or total GB's you can download per month?

Has anyone ever told these people children that it's just a game and not the freaking Beijing Olympics. I'll gladly use the service for downloadable content, but I'll think twice before engaging in online play that isn't coop.

Personally I'm just not a good enough FPS player to even begin being ranked, so it isn't much skin off my back. But I've seen my son in tears after he's been booted from 1 SW:BF2 game after another only because he's beating players that think they're the uber'est Jedi's.

[Wii] Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2
It has some of the best controls I've ever experienced in a fighting game; keeping in mind I haven't played MK: Armageddon for the Wii yet. The depth and variety of content in this game is just mind boggling.

[DS] Mechassualt: Phantom Wars
It may have a few issues here and there with graphics clipping, but overall it's a good solid mechassault game. The security hacking in it is very cool. Sound and voice acting were also very good. Sometimes it's the little things, and in keeping with that this game has the best manual I've ever seen for any DS game.

[PC] Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
I have to agree with others here that this is a very underappreciated game. Admittedly it was pushed out the door to early, but once patched this game is amazing.

GTA:VC for the PC was my biggest dissapointment. I finally got it a few months ago and played it for about 5 hours before I stopped and then eventually uninstalled it. Maybe if I'd played the original on the PS2 or played the XBox release, but the PC version did nothing for me. The controls were just crap as you either had to go strictly keyboard or gamepad when what I really wanted was keyboard for on foot and gamepad for vehicles. And to make things worse the keyboard vehicle controls were complete, utter crap as were the gamepad for on foot control! Don't know why Rockstar couldn't get this right; Crytek certainly got it right for Far Cry.

Plus the fact that the story wasn't appealing to me in any way at all. The camera perspective and control was also very poor; even after I applied a 3rd party patch that was supposed to help with them. Overall quite a dissapointment considering all the hype and high scoring reviews it got and all the "oooh the controls are so uber in the PC version" I've heard.
Thank god I only payed $10 for it.

I'd only heard of this because it was the June "shame of the month" in EGM.  It got 3.0, 4.0, 3.5 scores.

Some comments:

"...people who might want to try the multiplayer mode, please reconsider."

"...a game with some of the worst 3D graphics in recent memory"

"an autoengaging autopilot with knack for tossing you into buildings if you stray too far from the preset flight path."

It didn't sound like much fun.

Oh crap! Well that's why I always wait for at least a few reviews. Mind you these review scores are from EGM; a publication I have little or no respect for. But in all fairness, if a games at least good usually 1 of the EGM reviewers will score it 7.0 or higher.
I'm just too fed up with EGM's reviews where the variance between reviewers is as much as 4.0 points. It's like reading reviews written by someone simultaneously suffering from schizophrenia and mutliple-personality disorder.

I couldn't agree more. The real measuring stick is when all the JRPG's and 3rd parties that fled the N64 for the greener pastures of the PS1 come home to Big N's Wii. The only GTA I've played, other than the original on the PC, is Vice City. After about 5 hours of getting the run around and getting arrested, I gave up. Just a bit too frustrating and not enough to it for me I guess. I also didn't find the story at all appealing.

I tried to get into the Godfather on the XBox and PC but I quit playing both times after about 3 hours. I then rented it for the Wii and I can say the Blackhand edition is far more enjoyable; played it for about 16 hours before I had to return it. I was tempted to run out and buy it immediately, but honestly I felt a bit guilty about the enjoyment I was having doing too many evil deeds; still plan on buying it eventually.
From what little I played of GTA I can say they are somewhat similar, but the story from the get go is far superior in the GodFather.

I haven't checked it out myself, I just picked up Enemy Engaged 2.  Otherwise you could get one of those old EA sims, US Navy Fighters and fly the F4 slywink

I've always wanted an F4 sim, it's been one of my favorite jets for a long time.

If you want to fly a phantom in a jet sim, Wings Over Vietnam is a must buy. The F-4 is the featured jet in that sim and it's superbly modeled having by far the most challenging and realistic flight model. Even the wild weasel variant (F-4j) is available to play. I still have not bought anything on the VC. The pricing is ridiculous, but what really stops me from getting anything is not being able to transfer the games to another Wii if I ever had to. I am sure I will break down eventually though.

Well, technically Nintendo keeps track of all of your purchases. If you keep your Wii number handy, and you have to send in your console for repairs, you should be able to tell Nintendo this and they'd be able to transfer them or give you credit somehow.

I also believe there's an option to register your Wii with Nintendo so that VC game purchases will automatically be registered. I can't remember if this is an option in the Wii configuration or an option on the nintendo.com website.

And Zelda II is what they celebrate with?  Ugh.

I've never played Zelda 2 so I can't really comment... but my gut tells me that a celebratory offering of Super Mario RPG or Paper Mario 64 is more in order here.  slywink

With an average medium price for VC games of about $7.50, that
amounts to about 35.2 million in total cash sales in just over 6 months!

So-o-o-o on that note...how long until the money printing DS get's posted in this thread? smile

I personally was never thrilled with F-Zero X on the N64, at least not the way I was with F-Zero FX for the Cube or the F-Zero's for the GBA; believe these were the same as the SNES versions.

Paper Mario 64 and Breath of Fire 2 would be excellent additions to the VC library. Both of these will be day 1 purchases for me when they're available to N.A.

Do you have any light sources or anything reflective like a window or a glass cabinet near your TV?  Try using the Wii remote calibrator and you can see if it's picking up any extraneous IR sources, and you can try to drop the sensitivity so they get ignored.

I ditto this...it's the only thing I know that can cause the error you're describing. My HDTV is stored in a cabinet that has retractable doors that can be used to shield the sides of the screen from light. Therefore I don't run the risk of light sources interfering with the Wii sensor bar and have consequently never encountered this problem.

I've had my Wii for over 6 months now and the only error I've ever had was 1 system lockup that occurred while playing POP - Rival Swords; damn that prince, his wild antics are too disruptive! smile

Where's the talk?

Reviews are hammering it, but I need forum feedback!!

I wouldn't hold much stock in reviews when it comes to Mario Party games as many reviewers seem to miss the point. They seem to put the mini-games under a microscope and apply a review criteria that they'd use for a Capcom or Konami greatest hits collection. Which is a problem because those collections are usually comprised of what were AA and AAA quality games back in their day.

The review average so far for MP8 is about on target (71%). In fact after 9 reviews MP8 is only 5% lower than the highest ranked MP game ever; the original N64 game. I really wish GT would post a review because I thought this sites review of Mario Party 5 was one of the best I've ever read.
I'm going to buy this game for my kids and I have no doubt they'll have a blast playing it.

Those screen shots look very good indeed, by far the best images I've seen on the DS yet. I'd preorder it today, but EB is the only store that takes preorders in my city and they failed to honor my LOZ:TP preorder. Hope there's lots of copies around when it releases.  paranoid
