I don't think I've seen a Wii in the wild yet.

Two at Target last Sunday. Came back in the afternoon and there was still one sitting there so I bought it for my sister's kids.

Saw two today at Bestbuy.  Not sure about "in the wild" though since they were both already in customer's hands and they didn't have any stock on the shelf.

Also overheard one of the BB employees telling a cusomter "Well, Nintendo bought out Sega..."   icon_lol

They're still no where to be found in my city in Canada. Their scarcity here leads me to believe that the Wii is even more popular in Canada that in is in the US. When you consider the CDN price for a 360 Premium ($500), a PS3 ($650 - $700) and then the Wii ($290), it becomes obvious why.

I agree with some earlier replies that Big N's soaring stock is a significant reason why their market value is so high/large. However, something people often overlook about Big N is that they sell a ton of software. When the annual stats for the largest volume of NA game software sales are reported, Big N is usually ranked no lower than 3rd. And those were the stats during the lean GameCube years; I wouldn't be surprised if they top the list this year. They're in a unique position in that they reap profits from both hardware and software sales, which only helps push their stock.

BTW Too funny about the comment from that BB employee; the MEGATON rumor lives on and, in the minds' of some, becomes reality.   icon_lol

So really, they scored it low based on controls that you don't have to play through the game with.  And this version of RE4 really IS the "definite version" because it has waggle control but also traditional controls along with the added content of the PS2 version and the crisp graphics of the Gamecube version.

Plus, true widescreen.

According to hdtvarcade.com the PS2 version did have true widescreen. If the widescreen on the cube version was faked I'm surprised as it looks like it's running in a true 16:9 aspect ratio when run on my Wii; very clean and sharp too. It did however look more like 4:3 when I originally played it on the Cube.

PS2 version was true widescreen but also with lesser visuals than the Cube.  Cube version was faked with mandatory letterboxing.  The Wii version has the true widescreen of the PS2 version with improved visuals of the Cube version.

I remember watching my friend play the PS2 version and I did notice that the textures were worse and aliasing seemed more noticeable. What surprises me is that I don't have letter boxing when I run RE4 GC on my Wii, but I did when I ran it on my Cube which is capable of 480p component output. I have confirmed before through a number of tests that 480p Cube games do seem to be slightly enhanced when run on the Wii, but I can't explain why, or how,  the letter boxing is removed??
Unfortunately I'm trading in my GC version whey I pick up my RE4 Wii today, so I can't do a final comparison.

Further to the Gamespy review, Gamespot has awarded RE4 a 9.1.

Here's a quote of their reviewers' comments:

Quote
This is the definitive version of a modern classic and a must-play, even if you've already experienced the unique thrill of Resident Evil 4 on another platform.

It seems that quite a few people are aware of this game and want it. RE4 went on sale at EB stores in Canada today, so I called 5 stores in my city and at all but 1 of them it was sold out.  According to staff at each store they had about 10 walk in inquires for the game after it sold out.
Luckily the store that had 1 copy is the location where I'm friendly with the manager; my copies on hold for me to pick it up tomorrow.  slywink thumbsup

[Edit] IGN scored it a 9.0.

Needless to say I'm very pleased to hear this game will be available on the 360 as well as the PS3. FallOut was far too overlooked and ignored for its 1st 2 versions, it deserves the audience and exposure.

It was so overlooked that you forgot that there were actually 4 Fallout games. Yeah, two of them stunk (Fallout Tactics and that PoS hack-and-slash game on the Xbox), but there were 2 more. biggrin

Oh come now, those later 2 games don't count.  slywink
I was thinking along the lines of the 1st 2 RPG's which 3 appears to be a kin to. I actually enjoyed both Tactics and Brotherhood of Steel, but not nearly as much as the original 2 RPG's. I was more disappointed with Tactics only because I had higher expectations for it. Since I had no expectations for Brotherhood I ended up enjoying the lite hack'n'slash action-rpg it was.

And here's to hoping that the PC version won't have the GIANT ASS UI that default Oblivion does. As much as I love Bethesda, I really don't want to wait for the modders to make a UI that doesn't stare you in the face every second of the game.

And to that I want to say NO, NO, NO please leave it large for the PC version. Or at least give the PC version the option to run the larger 360 UI.
Why? because I do all my PC gaming on a older Sony 34" tube HDTV and it gets very hard to read small text on it. PC Strategy games are more or less a no go for me and even the chat text in MMO's can be challenging. I really appreciate games where any text is large enough to be legible, as in most action and adventure games. I realize I'm in the minority but I suspect the numbers of people in my situation will increase rather than decrease, at least until very large PC LCD's are as affordable as HDTV's.

Needless to say I'm very pleased to hear this game will be available on the 360 as well as the PS3. FallOut was far too overlooked and ignored for its 1st 2 versions, it deserves the audience and exposure.
7248  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [Wii] Gamespy Gives RE4 5/5 Stars on: June 19, 2007, 03:29:06 PM
I just read the review at Gamespy for the RE 4 review. Needless to say the reviewers liked the game very much and in particular the new control scheme. Here's their comments about the controls:

Quote
The reason that the Wii version is the best is because the new control system makes the gameplay more enjoyable. Using both the Wii remote and the nunchuck, players will be able to perform all of the regular moves and attacks from before, only now they can do them in a more sensitive, accurate and pleasing fashion. Leon is moved around by using the nunchuck's directional stick, while the all-important aiming is achieved by using the remote like a pointer. Holding down the B button on the remote then puts Leon into his targeting stance and using a combination of the Wii remote's sweeping movement and the nunchuck's directional stick, you're left with a highly useable and accurate method of shooting and knifing enemies.

This is the real key to success. What was a decent enough implementation of combat in the GameCube and PS2 versions is mastered with the Wii's intuitive control system. The biggest immediate payoff is that Leon is now much more accurate and responsive when shooting his guns, throwing his grenades and swiping with his trusty hunting knife. RE4 sported some cool interactive cutscenes where the player had to react instantly to situations by pressing certain button combinations. This aspect of the game has also been overhauled and now takes advantage of the Wii's motion-sensitive remote.

Also, Leon's knife melee attack can be activated by either physically swinging the remote or by holding the Z-button and then tapping A. In the heat of battle, this motion adds a nice twist to the proceedings.

I know that GameSpy can at times be a wee bit generous with their reviews, but they don't seem fall into that category with RE games as they only recently awarded the PC version 3.5/5 stars. After 4 tracked reviews the games is currently ranked at 87.4 % on Gamerankings. I don't know if I'm going to wait for more reviews or trade in my GC version today. With the way Wii sales have been, I'm a bit concerned that supply will run short in my city considering it's selling for only $40 CDN.

Hey.  If you find PC games taht are NOT patched, let me know, please.  I can report that to the folks at Gametap and they can get that fixed.  I'm told that the PC games on GT -should- be updated.

Now that's a good thing to hear.

Well I can absolutely confirm that the Kohan 2 I downloaded wasn't patched as it's own patcher performed a very lengthy update when i ran it.
I believe the following are also not the most current versions:

Dark Reign 2
Shadow of Destiny

I'll play them again tonight and check again to confirm the versions. Psychonauts is definitely the most recent version and I believe Tomb Raider legends is as well. I do need to check TRL again as I'm not 100% sure.
7250  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (6/18) on: June 18, 2007, 07:19:17 PM
Well I've got to say... one of the worst VC release weeks in quite some time. Other than Bloody Wolf these are truly lacklustre games. And from what I've read, it's the TGfx 16 version of Bloody Wolf which only supported sigle player. Boo hiss Big N for not giving us N.A.'s a good SNES or N64 game this week.

If RE4 receives good reviews, I'm considering trading in my GC version for it. It apparently scored very high in Famitsu's review and all reports indicate that the Wii controls are implemented very well. The release of the Wii version is opportune for me as the memory card containing my RE4 saves just corrupted beyond repair; luckily a 1st fo me. retard If I'm going to play it through again, I'd rather play the Wii version.

One thing I've been curious about is how do you patch PC (Windows or DOS) games that you download. When I checked the gametap folder all games appear to be in their own subfolder but in some compressed proprietary archive file. The only game I've been able to patch is Kohan II which has it's own built in patcher. The inability to patch PC games is keeping me from downloading them, as quite frankly I can't remember many that didn't require at least one patch.

I've also noted when I've been able to confirm the game versions internally, that the games are not updated versions but the originals. Very disappointing to me that a service that appears excellent in all other aspects would overlook this or be limited in this manner.
If you know of anyway to patch PC games you download, I'd love to know how.

I never had an N64, and never really wanted one, but now with the VC I am getting an itch.  I love platformers, and I'd really like to play Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie.  I'm also intrigued by Jet Force Gemini.  One problem, all these games were developed by Rare, now owned by Microsoft, and everything I have read points to them never appearing on the VC.

So I was looking around and I could probably snatch up a console and all of these games for around $50.  But I'd be bringing a 10 year old console into my already crowded gaming pile and that just seems silly.  But I might do it anyway.

(And before the first person pops in and says "emu", I like to play games in front of a tv with a proper controller.)

Other than a small initial batch of units that tended to over heat, the N64 was a very reliable and excellent console. $50 is a great price for a N64 and the games you listed. If you have a GameCube amongst your current consoles, you can use it's Composite or S-Video cable to connect a N64  as they used the same video output ports.

It's Dragon Boat Festival weekend here and that's going to take up most of my time. For what gaming time I have, my son and I plan on sampling many of the treats that the gaming candy store, aka Gametap, has to offer. Psychonauts is available on the service and I'll likely download it and get started on it. Also be getting in some play time with Streets of Rage 2, SF: Alpha 3 and Metal Slug 2.
So in a nutshell; mostly a classic gaming weekend for me. smile

Absolutely agree. And note that 2 of these block busters are from 3rd parties. Halo and XBox/360 have become synonymous, so with in excess of 10 million 360's now having been sold it's unlikely Halo fans don't already own the console. Personally Mass Effect and Blue Dragon are far more compelling reasons for me to purchase a 360 than Halo 3.

Just look at what games most people are talking about in message boards, look at our own message boards, how much are we talking about upcoming Wii games compared to upcoming 360 and PS3 games? I'm not saying there is nothing to look forward to on the Wii, not at all, I just feel like in general, there are more people excited about upcoming 360 and PS3 games.

Hey wait a minute...how did this end up being my quote. I never typed this, I'm quite sure this is Ridah's quote.
I think Ridah does have a point here, the list of planned 3rd party releases for the 360 is impressive and there's more excitement for those titles amongst board members. I would however disagree that people are more excited about upcoming PS3 games than they are for upcoming Wii games like MP3 or SSBB.

Quote from: Kevin Grey on June 15, 2007, 12:43:13 PM

Don't confuse message board excitement for the trend of mass market sales.  The Mario Party thread here has, what, 10 posts in it?  Meanwhile the Forza 2 thread is more like 10 pages.  But Mario Party outsold Forza handily.

There are for sure more hardcore games than casual gamers that post here and we do need to be careful not to pass those assumptions on to the buying habits of the general gaming public.

Game developers love developing for Microsoft platforms. Give credit, where credits due, Microsoft is good at delivering dev tools and developers take to them with enthusiasm. Even if MS only sells a 1/3 of the 360's they predicted they would -90 million- there'll still be a good library of games for the system when it reaches the end of it's life cycle.
Good sales numbers are most critical for the Wii, since it has a very new and different control scheme that is, and will, prove to be a significant challenge for developers. Nintendo also needs those numbers to encourage 3rd parties that are gun shy about going up against Big N's own 1st party titles.
I think Sony is the company that's going to suffer the most from poor sales. As I've said before their 3rd party support is soft, much of it being game dev's that historically jumped ship from the N64 to the PS1. Sony has a very good track record with it's 1st party titles. If the PS3 install base doesn't increase significantly, Sony's unfortunately going to inherit the Big N nemesis of 3rd parties being unwilling to compete against their own game offerings.

I agree with Jumangi.  There is no way anyone could call the 360 a clusterfuck.  I still maintain that over time Wii sales will fade and the HD consoles will start to dominate.  The reason Microsoft hasn't dropped their price is because they still see Sony as their main competition in the long run, not Nintendo.

Maybe that is a mistake.  I guess we'll know in 3 years or so.

Bzzzz...WRONG! Umm....Microsoft doesn't have 3 years left to go, only 2 and 1/2. Why? Because Microsoft so arrogantly decided that console life cycles are now only 4 years long. An asinine and arrogant decision that they'll no doubt eventually regret.  Thanks MS for prematurely obsoleting my XBox so you could show us that your latest and greatest can't even outsell  the wee bit underpowered Wii. Just a bit off topic -my apologies- but based upon how many people here are saying they're buying Mario Party 8 or Forza 2 this week, I'm predicting that both of these games do in excess of 1/4 million in NA sales before the end of May; maybe even 1/2 million!

OK I was a bit shy on the Forza 2 prediction, but damn it I was close. Yeah, yeah I know...the 1/2 million was a bit of a stretch.  Roll Eyes

I can't believe someone who posted earlier was disappointed in the Forza 2 sales. As far as I'm concerned they're outstanding considering that number is for just for the last 4 days in May.

I believe this is the 1st month since December that the PS2 has fallen below 200K in sales. Which causes me to continue to believe that PS2 sales will eventually distribute to the Wii and not the PS3 or 360.
The PSP sales are impressive. As I've said before, as ironic as it may be, the PSP is shaping up to be Sony's saviour this console gen.

The amazing thing is that if Microsoft called a press conference today I have no doubt that Peter Moore would stand up and claim there's absolutely nothing wrong in the design and manufacturing of the 360. Based upon the success of SC2 on the Cube, I think Namco is making a mistake by not bringing SC4 to the Wii. IMHO Dragon Ball Z and Mortal Kombat have demonstrated that a fighting game can be done well on the Wii. Perhaps we'll see it released after the PS3 and 360 versions.

In regards to the 360 and PS3's D-pads, I can't comment about the PS3's, but I have used the PS2's D-pad now for many of the fighters on Gametap and have found it to work quite well. So if the PS3 is similar I would think it should work fine. I agree with others that the 360's D-pad is far from the best. I have found it to be OK when I recently played Street Fighter Anniversary and SC2, but I did find the D-pad on my Xbox Logitech wireless to work better.

Regardless of any of the above controllers, IMHO the D-pad on the Wii's classic controller is far superior to any of these. In fact after having used the classic controller last weekend in MK:A I can say the controller really rocks for fighting games. I still prefer to waggle my wiimote smile and shake my nunchuk, but the classic is a really nice option to have.

Interstate 76
Just after I got back into gaming after being away from it for about 7 years, I picked up a big bulky copy of PC Gamer and there in was an I76 demo. As soon as I fired it up I new I had to have it. I couldn't even run it properly in 3D mode until I got my Voodoo 2 or 3; can't remember which one it started to work with. Anyways 3D or software rendered the game was an absolute blast.

Panzer General
I remember playing the Avalon Hill board games as a kid and always wanted a video game experience like them. I tried a number of games on the C64 and Amiga that were supposed to promise similar game play, but they always left me wanting. Panzer General was the 1st that really gave me the enjoyment of a deep war board game. If I recall correctly, it was also one of the 1st strategy games that came on a CD-ROM which allowed it to have some cool animations when your troops got blasted.

Amber; journeys beyond
This was a point and click adventure game that you could play on the PC or MAC. It was short, but the art work  and story were just amazing. The puzzles were so inventive and clever, I don't think they've ever been surpassed in any game since.
7266  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Wait a minute? So now you don't need friend codes to play online? I am confused on: June 12, 2007, 03:29:24 AM
The way I read this is that EA will be providing their own servers for Madden 2008 Wii. Which is what they did for PS2 releases and initially for a few XBox games. Hosting you own server for online multiplay in the Big 'N' universe isn't exactly new, as that's what Sega did with PSO for the Cube. From what I understand, only games that want to use the online service developed by Big 'N' and Gamespy will require friend codes.
If I were to speculate, I'd say  this won't be the last time Big 'N' bows to pressure from big game dev's / publishers that aren't thrilled with the friend code system.

This is exactly what a coworker experienced with Parallels for virtually any game he tried; far too slow to be playable.
OpenGL support, from the best of my recollection, has been on the MAC for quite some time. I believe this is the API that games like Neverwinter Nights 2 and WoW have used. Unfortunately OpenGL now only constitutes a minority of the games on the PC, so Apple has a steep hill to climb in luring 3rd party support.

i hardly touch my Wii now(last turned it on 2 weeks ago to see the VC titles).....maybe if they brought some decent games out for it....maybe that would change

Having almost played POP:RS to completion -damn that last boss- currently unlocking the crypt in MK:A and my ongoing game play with DBZ: BT2, SSX Blur and a slew of VC titles, the Wii is about the only console in my home that's on these days. I don't own a 360 or PS3, just a XBox and PS2, so that might be the difference between myself and others. Although there are still great games coming out for the PS2 as many threads in this forum would attest. I just prefer the gameplay on the Wii more.

And now updated with VC games. Man, was Sonic 2 a classic..

Since Sonic 2 and all of the other VC releases this week are also available on Gametap, I'll download them there. I played a number of classics on Gametap this weekend since I now have my PS2 controller plugged into my PC and I was very surprised at how well they played. Suffice to say that for now on in I'll be downloading all of my Sega Genesis classics from Gametap as opposed to VC.

I just downloaded the PC version this weekend from Gametap and I'm very impressed; excellent game! I've been playing it using my new PS2 -to- USB controller adaptor and can say that the PC version plays perfectly with the PS2 controller. smile thumbsup

Since I just subsribed to Gametap I don't think I'll be buying much until summers end. Depending on what the VC releases are this week, I might buy 1 or 2 of them. Scarface for the Wii is very temping as the initial review scores are favourable; sounds like another game that's got the controls right.

Before I quit playing on the WoW RP server I had a good time pretending that my dwarf was Canadian.

"What's this all aboot, then, eh?"

LOL. Well that fits, since any good dorf is usually side questing for their next tankard of ale.  nod
For whatever reason my dorf alts usually sound Scottish.

"WOT! Are ya saying I kenna have any of yeer ale?!  Well then...let me aquaint ya with me fine axe!"

Considering I'm 85% of the way thru POP:Rival Swords on the Wii, I'm hopeful I'll complete it this weekend. God I hope the Grand Vizier doesn't turn out to be an uber prick.
I'm going to download Tomb Raider: Anniversary for PC and get a start with it.
Also going to unlock some more of the crypt in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon on the Wii by waggling mii Wiimote.  icon_lol
And if I need a quick relief from serious gaming I'm going to fire up Donkey Kong Country 2 or Gunstar Heroes on VC.

Grab a USB adapter to use your PS2 controller on your PC.

Kevin that's an awesome idea, but where do you get such a device?

I got mine at Radio Shack but it was a couple of years ago so I don't know if this is the same one, but mine works great.  Not available online but check their inventory to see if it's in stock at a store near you.

Kevin,

Many thanks for the info; it lead to me finding an adaptor. Radioshack Canada's stores are now Circuit City Source stores and I always forget to check them for things like this. I found one -Sector 7 brand- but unfortunately it was about $5 more than the one you listed. It does however come with WinXP drivers on a mini-cd and it has a 1 year warranty. All things considered, it's still much cheaper than buying a new USB gamepad.

Fraid I'm going to pass on this one. After taking a Hunter to a high level in DAoC and hitting the wall in character in-balance and nerfs, I've lost all faith in Mythic. I'm also no fan of their customer support, or lack there of.
I really like Warhammer but not enough to overcome my dislike of Mythic.

I did a search at stores in my city and none of them seem to have this adaptor. I also live in Canada, so I'm a bit limited for online stores that will ship to me.

Personally, I'll be using either the Classic Controller or a Gamecube one (if I want rumble). No way I'm doing any kind of waggles to play a fighting game.

Actually, the waggle in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon is surprisingly effective.

I agree. I'm currently playing MK:A and for the most part the controls work very well. I haven't tried, or felt the need, to use the classic controller yet, but I'm intrigued enough to give it a go. I still think the fighting controls are superior in DBZ:BT2, but MK:A is still a good effort by Midway.
If the developer of DBZ:BT2 and Midway can get the Wiimote & nunchuck right, I have no doubt that Big 'N' will come up with something kick-ass for SSB:B.

As much as I'm enjoying Anniversary and would like to see a Tomb Raider 2 remake (doubtful I agree), I would still rather get a sequel to Legend.  It was one of my favorite games of last year.  Loved it.  Had some issues but I think those can be easily addressed in a sequel.

plus they can't leave us hanging!

what 'hanging'? i hated the game so much i quit about halfway - no hanging here...

the ending left some plot threads wide open and all but screamed 'to be continued'.  too bad you didn't like the game though.

I really liked TR:Legends on the XBox, in fact I'm currently on my 2nd play through and I just started to play the PC version. I'd definitely be IN for any sequel.

I still haven't decided on what system I'll get TR:Anniversary for. TR:L for PC looks drop-dead gorgeous on my gaming rig, but I don't like the control via my Logitech gamepad or mouse & keyboard. I appreciate the feedback here by those that are playing the PS2 version. From what I'm hearing and reading the graphics are very good for a PS2 game. I also have to consider that my kids will be playing it, so the PS2 controller would be a plus.

I guess I have a different perspective on things. I go back to the Pen & Paper RPG days when everyone sat at a table, got drunk and tried their damnest to out-silly the other person with their truly terrible medieval accents. In the better groups it was like writing a collaborative fantasy novel; a lot of work but also a great amount of fun. I see MMORPG's as a continuation of this gaming legacy and see little or no point in spending your hard earned cash every month unless you're going to make an effort to role play on a RP server.
There is a after all a reason why these games are called Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games.

Anyhow, back on topic...I can sympathize with anyone who's gotten the bad end of the Ban stick. This just seems to be an unfortunate consequence of MMORPGs with large populations. I remember when this occurred in the early days of EQ and I'm not at all surprised if it's occurring in WoW.
7280  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The Writings on the Wall: Sony & MS are You Paying Attention!? on: June 07, 2007, 07:50:43 PM
I just read the Next Generation article that's quoted on the GT news page.
Here's the link to the article on the GT front page:
http://gamingtrend.com/News/news.php?NewsID=9312

And here's the link to the actual Next Generation article: Console Price Cuts: The Evidence
http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5883&Itemid=2

It makes you wonder if Microsoft and Sony are even paying attention to such blatant historical evidence...or are they residing in their respective fantasy worlds. Based on the statistics and market trends this article illustrates, it's very apparent that both MS's and Sony's new gen consoles are very overpriced. It's also obvious they need to issue price cuts; not at Christmas, not next quarter, not next month, but NOW!
If this isn't a case of writing on the wall in big, bold letters staring Harris and Moore in the face, I don't know what is!
