How was this for younger kids? After a lot of discussion (and seeing it before) we took our kid to avengers and he loved it and we felt pretty comfortable about it. How does this compare?

Kid is a little young, but he is insane about superheroes, and spiderman is his favorite (well, until he saw iron man in avengers, anyway).

Great video.  That cracked me up.  Kids and dogs always amaze me with how well they handle stuff and how it doesn't get them down like it seems to with the rest of us.  Good stuff.

Good to hear that it looks like things are clearing out.

Also took our 4.5 year old... some of the scary stuff was maybe a little too scary... and I don't think I've ever heard this kid say a movie was scary before.

I don't know if Cryptonomicon would be a good miniseries, just because I think weaving the timelines together would be very challenging, and hard to follow...

Anathem, on the other hand... it's a fairly focused narrative, but epic scope... that is the one I've always thought would be good HBO miniseries fodder.

Man... I feel legitimately sad about Lidstrom retiring.  My favorite player.

87  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Avengers - 3D or not? on: May 07, 2012, 01:36:59 AM
Saw it in 3D because my friend wanted to... it looked fine, but the 3D really was, as always, not worth paying for.

I thought it was pretty fun... one liner overload, but pretty fun.

How did those big things fly?

I forgot to stay post credits.  Oops.

Tomorrow is the last day of week 2...

Never been so busy in my life, but I'm learning alot, and starting to get comfortable with it.

The commute honestly doesn't bother me one bit.  I got a couple books on tape from the library, but mostly I just listen to NPR or music.  There is great mountain biking smack dab in the middle of the commute, so I've brought my bike 4 days  so far and stopped off to ride after work.  Because I take short lunches and bail at 4:30 or so, I'm actually in the mountains on the bike faster than if I had the old job.

The job situation is way cooler... no BS, no power trips.

Waking up at 3:45 this morning because the new job is stressing me out had the one advantage of me being able to easily fit in my 4 miler.

Saw this yesterday.

Super funny.  Pretty smart.

Overall, great!

I ran my first 5K on Saturday.  Got 2nd for men age 30 - 39.  Clearly, there were not many entrants (though definitely more than 2!)  Then I went and got in 20 awesome trail miles on a bike I was demoing in Colorado.

This is my first week at the new gig, so exercise will be a different endeavor, but I can move my 8 hours around however I'd like (short lunches, etc), so I should be able to do my 4 mile run in the morning and make it there by 8:30 and not have to get up too awfully early...

Lacking a printer at home, because that shit always breaks after 2 months, it seems, I printed out all my forms for the new job at my old job.  That's bad form, right?  I guess they can't really begrudge me 4 pieces of paper...

I believe Weber thought he was hit high and from behind (which I think he was) so he took things into his own hands.

Yeah, I think so too... but I still bet he sits.  Out of all the retaliatory options, that's a pretty dumb one.

If there was a playoff only GCL, I would buy it... even if it was more per month than regular GCL.  So annoyed at not being able to watch the games at home.

I didn't realize Carter was hurt...

Man, Kings had several really close chances.  I should've watched this whole game.

Devil - that was the first Devils game I've really watched this season, I think... their PK is on it - lots of good pressure.  I was surprised the Wings scored on the PP against that... it was just a really good play to get Brodeur out of position on that goal.  The Wings definitely had more offensive pressure, but not a lot of good chances.  I wouldn't feel bad about the Devils' offense against the Wings at home.
110  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: NHL Season 2011-2012 on: April 06, 2012, 02:47:21 PM
Certainly effective...

When was the last time the Kings scored 5 goals in a game?  That's a rarity...

Watching condensed game... LOL @ Doughty's combat skills.

But I am supposedly just making this shit up.
If only you could talk about hockey instead of only ever whining about hockey...

I haven't seen the Steen/Bertuzzi thing, so I can't comment on that.  The Franzen/Backes thing could be a penalty, but we weren't on the ice and only saw the end of the exchange, so we don't know what led up to that, and how that affected what the Refs called/did not call.  If Franzen just skated up and did that to Backes, I'd call it a roughing penalty too.  With the refs right there, I imagine there is more to the story since they didn't call it.

Like I said, I can't comment on the Steen/Bertuzzi thing since I didn't see it and the replay isn't up yet, but there is often a LOT of stuff that goes on when two guys are standing face to face and talking shit that isn't called. For all teams.  You are just hyper sensitive about this team for some reason, and watching with the preconception that they are always going to try something dirty, and always get away with it.

I went last night, and I'm happy to say that my fears were unfounded... I thought everything was really well done, with the exception of Rue and Cinna being black, which ruined not just this, but all movies.  The fear that characters I failed to recognize as black will be shown as such in future adaptations of books that I have read makes going to the theater in the future completely unpalatable.

Seriously though... with the exception of the chariot scene, which was a really bad case of green screening (looked almost original Clash of the Titans bad, I thought), I think that they hit a good tone, and really did exactly what they should've done with everything (in a movie that is PG13, which it clearly had to be). The silly things were the silly things from the book.  The moments leading up to the start of the game were pretty gut wrenching, and scenes with her sister and Rue were actually emotionally impactful.  Thumbs up!

Frustrating couple of days on the fitness front..

I was super sick last Monday/Tuesday, and it hasn't totally gone away.  I ran 3 on Wednesday though, and ran 3.5 on Thursday, but rested all other days.  Sunday I went for my long run of the week (5), and just felt *terrible*... sick stomach, low energy, no rhythm... and then my IT band/knee thing that has stopped all my previous runs suddenly appeared with a vengeance.  I had to walk about 80% of the last mile, which just pissed me the fuck off.

Gave it another rest day yesterday. Did about 45 minutes of a strength workout this morning and I can feel the sickness and week off from upper body stuff for sure, which sucks.  Knee feels a bit iffy... supposed to run at lunch. Crossing my fingers.

119  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Help me find my next car... on: April 03, 2012, 03:53:18 AM
2012 Impreza is very impressive... waiting 12 weeks to get one with a hatchback, less so.  I would love for that to be my commuter.

Current not-perfect solution was the Forester.  Our current Forester is toast - new engine, and somewhere between $3000 and $5000 to replace it, on a car that is probably worth about that much WITH an engine.  So we have no family car that can go on the highway... so the Forester was the answer to that question, and will also suffice to commute for a while at least.

The next question is what to do with the existing vehicles, and what can we find that will commute better, at least during good weather, and be a decent vehicle.  I'm feelin' worn out from thinking about shit and spending a bunch of money, even though we got, in the end, a good deal on something that will be very useful to us overall, even if it does pose more questions and is not a perfect solution.  I *think* I made a decent decision in an imperfect situation.

I'm sure gellar will now tell me 20 reasons this was idiotic.
120  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Help me find my next car... on: April 02, 2012, 05:58:14 PM
Existing forester may be donezo... needs a new engine.

We may buy this forester, then in a few months once things are more settled, get a full on commuter and shift this car to the wife/kid and taking trips.
