First year for our 6 year old trick or treating in our new neighborhood, and good lord people go overboard... full sized candy bars and huge handfuls of fun size... we went basically a block each way from hour house and his pumpkin was full.  Lots of retirees who like kids, I guess.  Or predators?

Anyway, he was quite happy with this in spite of the 28 degree temperature and 20mph wind.

Very informative - thanks!

So it looks like I could get a Dell XPS 8700 for $850ish that appears to me to be pretty great other than the video card, and I have a video card (Radeon HD 7870) that is plenty fine.  The rest of my rig is 6 years old (Dell XPS 420 - Intel Q6600 cpu, 6gb RAM, and the aforementioned 7870, which I installed earlier this year).

So I figure I could build a similar/better PC and not have to pay for a graphics card I'm just going to yank out anyway, but I don't know what I'm doing at all... so out of the loop these days.

In my mind, I need to buy:

Case + Powersupply
CPU
Motherboard
RAM
SSD
Optical Drive

The current PC will get Windows 7 and go be the family computer.  I will pull an extra hard drive from this, at least for starters, but maybe include a 1TB drive in what I'm looking at.

CPU it seems I want whatever the fancy pants i7 4th gen thing is...

Recommendations?  I need this thing to be solid, all get along well together, and let me both work and play on it.

Good advice, thanks.  I will have her try that.

I'll give her what help I can, but at a certain point, what can you do, really...
48  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Changing file behavior in IE/Acrobat on: October 21, 2013, 02:41:46 PM
This is sort of a weird question maybe... but it seems like there are folks around here who do more of this sort of support, which I don't really do, but need to.

We have a user who is complaining that when they installed Acrobat Reader XI, it stopped giving them the option to 'Open' the PDFs served by our system, and that they just get the 'Save' option.

Details:
They are using 64 bit IE on Windows 7. I am trying to get confirmation they are using IE 10.
They installed Adobe Acrobat Reader XI.
The PDF is being generated on the fly by SQL Reporting Services.  She reports that other PDFs (that I know are direct links to files) don't have this issue.

When I set up the same scenario, it worked just fine for me.

I'm wondering if there is a setting somewhere that she defaulted the action to be 'Save', and if I can get her to change something maybe she'll be able to have the 'Open' option again.  This really isn't within the type of support we provide - we support the system, not the computers of our users - but if we can get her working she'll stop complaining that our system is 'incompatible'.

Thanks for any help!

Jimmy - try running with Heed instead of Gatorade.  Gatorade is a lot of simple sugar and bullshit... Heed is much more tolerable.

If you just want eletrolytes/salt and not calories, try Nuun.

I've had back to back colds (supercolds? I dunno, brutal) and I think I ran twice and biked like 6 times in all of September... it was godawful.

Hoping to have this latest bug gone by the end of the weekend and maybe next week I can get back on the horse.  I'm going to buy a snow bike later today so I can mountain bike all winter... pretty stoked to do that!

99% of the time... beer.

The other 1% is probably 80% Canadian or Irish whiskey (maybe a Maker's or Woodford on a rare occasion) on the rocks, with the remainder being vodka martinis, extra clean, extra vermouth... that's probably my favorite drink, but too deadly to have very often.

Anyone had any experience trading a phone in with Verizon?  They are saying $200 for the 4S, which seems like a ton... determining the value of the phone is kind of strange though - it says 'is the LCD unbroken and can you navigate to the home screen with no dead spots, etc', and then has a separate question 'is anything else broken, like the screen, blah blah'.  My phone sort of falls into both of those - the front glass is cracked in the bottom corner, but it doesn't reach into the screen itself, and it works perfectly normally... so does that count as the LCD being broken, or not?

I had no idea you could trade in a phone directly to Verizon, but I'm pretty sure that would count as broken. Probably just best to wait the extra months until you are up for upgrade, no?

Oh, I can upgrade now... (2 years isn't 2 years with Verizon)

I'm just wondering if it's worthwhile to trade in at the same time.

It sounds broken to me, but the exact statements are a bit strange.  Apparently if I say that it's cracked, it still says my trade in is $200... which can't be right.

'best camera in a phone I will buy'
60  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Let's talk Iphone on: September 11, 2013, 04:14:38 AM
I'm really glad the thing isn't any bigger - some of the android phones look really nice, but they are just too damn big for a phone (for me).

I'm on 4S and trying to decide if the 5S is worth the extra $100 over the 5C.  I'm sorta leaning towards yes (the best camera I can get is a big selling point for me).  I also always figure it's a good idea to get the fastest thing I can since I'll have it for 21 months or whatever it ends up being.

I have had the thing since Dec 2011, and I dropped it and cracked it last week.

It turns out that it's not legal to briefly break the speed limit when passing, if you can believe that.

They just passed a new law here in Wyoming that allows you to break the speed limit by 10mph to pass.

I haven't had a speeding ticket since 1994, but my wife got one last month, last day of the month, going 35 in a 30.  Cop apologized and said he had to make quota for their grant (University cop).

Lame.  She paid the ticket and did an online traffic school to keep it off of our insurance.

Ghost - Infestissumam.  Maybe the most disappointing sophomore effort I've ever heard.  The last album reveled in it's ludicrous "sing along to Satanism" vibe, but the songs were catchy as hell.  They seemed to take themselves entirely too seriously this time around, and the album suffers for it.  It's simply just boring.

Huh... I actually think this is a much better album than the first one, though it doesn't have a song as individually good/catchy as 'Ritual'.  It's hard to call this band 'metal', though.  They just sound like a melodic classic rock band with some horror movie overtones.

Speaking of 'not metal', the new Queens of the Stone Age is the album of the year... so far at least.

My favorite heavy album so far this year - Kvelertak - Meir:

77  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Back to Apple for me... on: June 24, 2013, 02:19:08 PM
I have a LOT of trouble getting iTunes to sync reliably with my iPhone.  It routinely drives me insane.  I have wireless sync and I don't know it has ever worked, and wired sync routinely turns into this idiotic dance of opening/closing itunes, plugging in/unplugging the phone, rebooting... I don't know why it works so terribly, but for me it sure does (and always has).

I have a new phone coming up, and I keep going back and forth on iPhone/Android.  I had a Motorola droid... it was decent.  I have iPhone 4S now, and it's mostly really good (certainly way better than the original Droid).  New Android phones are too big, in my opinion, and I know apps generally lag behind (though I'm sure it has improved in the last two years), but we use google stuff at my company, and being able to get a larger amount of memory for less money, etc. are all appealing.  Dunno yet.

79  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Recommend me a programming language on: June 03, 2013, 08:05:01 PM
Oh, I don't think they would port anything - they just want to develop new stuff on GAE.

.NET stuff is much better at playing well across browsers, though like all web development, a lot of that is really front end HTML/CSS sort of stuff that is independent of the backend platform.
80  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Recommend me a programming language on: June 03, 2013, 05:51:40 PM
Curious if anyone has started doing stuff in GAE?

The CIO for our largest client (we are a software development contractor) is really pushing for everything moving to GAE vs. .NET, which is sort of weird since they've already got a billion .NET apps, but that's beside the point...  Just curious if people have used it and what their impressions are.
