41  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: The Hobbit finds a director on: January 02, 2014, 08:46:26 PM
I tried to go into this being open to just enjoying the ride, but man... I just can't do it.  My disappointment from movie one continues in movie 2.  I was encouraged by reviews that said this was a better film, but while maybe the overall rollercoaster was better executed than film 1, it lacked the really great scenes that film 1 managed to include around all of it's idiotic shit beard and CGI rock monsters.

My complaints, in order of importance:

1. They are taking a very short book and adding a bunch of stuff into it.  I don't have an issue with this per se, but it drives me up the wall when they give short shrift to things that are actually in the book and important to the development of characters in order to make more time for their invented shit, particularly if they can turn something about character into a huge action set piece.

Case in point: Spider scene.

Case in point: Bjorn. The way Gandalf foists the band on Bjorn, and how it's exactly what he did to Bilbo at the beginning of the book (and one of the best parts of film one!), it's funny... and they turned it into them running into his house uninvited and slamming the door... and then remove all of their interaction with him. Boo!

Case in point: Turning Bilbo's repeated conversations with Smaug into one action set piece.

2. I just don't feel like much care was taken with anything, and that source material aside the are just sorta weak films that just rush from action set piece to action set piece with little regard for characters or story or motivation or depth.  I think that the criticism often has so much to do with comparisons to the source material that it's hard to just judge them on their own merits, but doing so, they are the fantasy equivalent of Michael Bay... I think some of that crappiness is covered up by good casting, and the occasional interlude that lifts almost directly from the source material and ends up being great (e.g. events at Bag End and Gollum, which were both great).  I keep harping on it, but turning everything into an over-the-top action sequence just pissed me off.

I will, as I did with the first, give it another try on home video to see if my ire softens on a second viewing, but... man.
42  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [movie] The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Silver Chair on: December 07, 2013, 05:33:42 AM
I didn't even realize they had made 3... I had vague recollections of them making a second one.  I thought the first was just such a heavy handed christ allegory... which I guess is the source material, but came across so strongly in the movie it was almost embarrassing... I also felt like it was trying really hard to be the lord of the rings, or at least hit the right beats to be a LOTR movie, instead of just being itself.

I can't remember how far I made it into the series as a kid... I remember being disappointed that there were books that didn't follow the kids.
43  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Is this true? (Samsung pays Apple 2 Billion $ with nickels) on: November 21, 2013, 05:04:58 AM
I don't think there are 2 billion dollars in nickels...

I just read that the 2009 series of coinage includes 86.64 million nickels, which would be $4.332 million.

Obviously there are coins from other years out there, but they do try to periodically pull them off the street, as far as I know... unless that is just paper.

Found another link that lists the total number of nickels in circulation at 841,720,000, or $42 million.

My calculations are that it would weigh 440,000 lbs, but that you would only need about 10 semi tractor-trailers to haul it.

45  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: The Gaming Trend Cookbook (Crowdsourced nom book!) on: November 12, 2013, 06:41:06 PM
I kind of made up a recipe for a half assed chicken pozole the other night that was pretty good and might fix your chili craving as well.  I used a 'natural' rotisserie chicken from the grocery store and it was the way to go... didn't have to roast a chicken, and it had all the benefits of having done so.

Meat from 1 rotisserie chicken, removed from carcass and shredded into bite sizes.
8 cups low sodium chicken stock (I used Pacific Foods, which is really good... so this was two cartons).
1lb tomatillos (or if you can find canned tomatillos, you could use those instead and save a step).
1 Tbsp Canola or similar oil
1 White Onion, chopped
1 Red Bell Pepper, chopped
1 Large Stalk Celery, chopped
5 Cloves Garlic, minced
1 Tbsp Ground Cumin
1 tsp Ground Coriander
1 tsp Mexican Oregano
1/2 tsp salt (then add to taste)
1/4 tsp ground black pepper
1 roasted medium hot pepper - pasilla or anahiem, or just buy a small can of roasted diced green chiles.
2 Tbsp flour
1 28oz can whole hominy (BRING ON THE HOMINY!), drained and rinsed.
Cayenne pepper, to taste

Heat the broiler to high.  Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil, and remove husks and wash the tomatillos.  Arrange on the baking sheet.  You could probably roast your hot pepper on the same sheet and it'd work out ok.  Stick under the broiler and turn regularly until mushy and charred (or not mushy, but charred for the pepper).  Remove seeds and skin from blackened pepper, and dice.  Maybe 20 minutes of oven time.
Add the oil to a medium hot stock pot, and throw in onion, bell pepper and celery.  Cook until tender (8 min?)
While that's going on, remove the stems/hard bits from the tomatillos, and blend in the blender until smooth.
Add garlic to stock pot, stir 30 seconds.
Add in spices, stir 30 seconds.
Add in broth, chicken, tomatillo puree, diced hot pepper, and hominy.  Bring to a low boil.
Mix flour and 1 cup of water together separately, and whisk until smooth.  Add into pot to thicken.
Adjust seasonings to taste.
Let it cook for an hour or so.

Thoughts: if you made a roux from the flour it might be slightly tastier, but... that's more work.
If you added the hominy later (last 15 minutes or something) then it'd be a bit firmer, but if it's in there a long time it adds a nice corny flavor to everything, and helps thicken the soup a bit, I think.
46  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: The Gaming Trend Cookbook (Crowdsourced nom book!) on: November 12, 2013, 06:26:59 PM
Yep.

1lb Lean Ground Beef
1 - 2 Tbsp Canola Oil
2 Strips Bacon (optional)
1 White Onion
1 Red Bell Pepper
4 Garlic Cloves
2 Tbsp Good Chili Powder (like Penzey's!)
1 Tbsp Cumin
1 tsp ground coriander
1 tsp salt
1 tsp Mexican Oregano
1/4 tsp ground black pepper
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (or you know, to taste... you can omit both of these, which I do for my sissy kid)
1 15oz can black beans, rinsed
1 15oz can diced tomatoes (get Hunt's)
1 15oz can tomato sauce
1 cup frozen corn

If using bacon, chop it up and cook it in the bottom of a big soup pot until crispy, then remove and put on a towel.  Remove most of the bacon grease, but leave a little, you know, for flavor.
Add half of oil to pot and swirl to coat.  Cook ground beef over medium high heat until browned and crumbled.  Remove from pan.
Add other half of oil, and add in chopped onion and bell pepper, and cook until tender.
While this is going on, put all of the spices (sans garlic) into a little container and mix together.
Add minced garlic.  Cook until fragrant... like 30 seconds.
Dump in spices, and stir to coat everything and get fragrant.  30 - 60 seconds.
Dump in beans, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce and corn.  Bring to a simmer... throw in crock pot for a few hours.

49  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / WTB: PCIe video card on: November 09, 2013, 04:40:36 AM
Trying to get my (now) old computer working with the original video card (new video card went into new computer) and it won't even boot... just goes into a loop of trying to power on, then shutting off...

The whole thing was working like a champ until this change, so I'm guessing the video card is toasted.

Anyone have a decent PCIe card they want to unload?  Doesn't need to be too fancy...  the existing broken card is, I think, a GeForce 6800GT... so something around in that level would probably be fine - it's going to be family computer for internet, kid games, etc.

First year for our 6 year old trick or treating in our new neighborhood, and good lord people go overboard... full sized candy bars and huge handfuls of fun size... we went basically a block each way from hour house and his pumpkin was full.  Lots of retirees who like kids, I guess.  Or predators?

Anyway, he was quite happy with this in spite of the 28 degree temperature and 20mph wind.

So it looks like I could get a Dell XPS 8700 for $850ish that appears to me to be pretty great other than the video card, and I have a video card (Radeon HD 7870) that is plenty fine.  The rest of my rig is 6 years old (Dell XPS 420 - Intel Q6600 cpu, 6gb RAM, and the aforementioned 7870, which I installed earlier this year).

So I figure I could build a similar/better PC and not have to pay for a graphics card I'm just going to yank out anyway, but I don't know what I'm doing at all... so out of the loop these days.

In my mind, I need to buy:

Case + Powersupply
CPU
Motherboard
RAM
SSD
Optical Drive

The current PC will get Windows 7 and go be the family computer.  I will pull an extra hard drive from this, at least for starters, but maybe include a 1TB drive in what I'm looking at.

CPU it seems I want whatever the fancy pants i7 4th gen thing is...

Recommendations?  I need this thing to be solid, all get along well together, and let me both work and play on it.

65  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Changing file behavior in IE/Acrobat on: October 21, 2013, 02:41:46 PM
This is sort of a weird question maybe... but it seems like there are folks around here who do more of this sort of support, which I don't really do, but need to.

We have a user who is complaining that when they installed Acrobat Reader XI, it stopped giving them the option to 'Open' the PDFs served by our system, and that they just get the 'Save' option.

Details:
They are using 64 bit IE on Windows 7. I am trying to get confirmation they are using IE 10.
They installed Adobe Acrobat Reader XI.
The PDF is being generated on the fly by SQL Reporting Services.  She reports that other PDFs (that I know are direct links to files) don't have this issue.

When I set up the same scenario, it worked just fine for me.

I'm wondering if there is a setting somewhere that she defaulted the action to be 'Save', and if I can get her to change something maybe she'll be able to have the 'Open' option again.  This really isn't within the type of support we provide - we support the system, not the computers of our users - but if we can get her working she'll stop complaining that our system is 'incompatible'.

Thanks for any help!

If you just want eletrolytes/salt and not calories, try Nuun.

Hoping to have this latest bug gone by the end of the weekend and maybe next week I can get back on the horse.  I'm going to buy a snow bike later today so I can mountain bike all winter... pretty stoked to do that!

99% of the time... beer.

The other 1% is probably 80% Canadian or Irish whiskey (maybe a Maker's or Woodford on a rare occasion) on the rocks, with the remainder being vodka martinis, extra clean, extra vermouth... that's probably my favorite drink, but too deadly to have very often.

Anyone had any experience trading a phone in with Verizon?  They are saying $200 for the 4S, which seems like a ton... determining the value of the phone is kind of strange though - it says 'is the LCD unbroken and can you navigate to the home screen with no dead spots, etc', and then has a separate question 'is anything else broken, like the screen, blah blah'.  My phone sort of falls into both of those - the front glass is cracked in the bottom corner, but it doesn't reach into the screen itself, and it works perfectly normally... so does that count as the LCD being broken, or not?

I had no idea you could trade in a phone directly to Verizon, but I'm pretty sure that would count as broken. Probably just best to wait the extra months until you are up for upgrade, no?

Oh, I can upgrade now... (2 years isn't 2 years with Verizon)

I'm just wondering if it's worthwhile to trade in at the same time.

It sounds broken to me, but the exact statements are a bit strange.  Apparently if I say that it's cracked, it still says my trade in is $200... which can't be right.

I'm really glad the thing isn't any bigger - some of the android phones look really nice, but they are just too damn big for a phone (for me).

I'm on 4S and trying to decide if the 5S is worth the extra $100 over the 5C.  I'm sorta leaning towards yes (the best camera I can get is a big selling point for me).  I also always figure it's a good idea to get the fastest thing I can since I'll have it for 21 months or whatever it ends up being.
