Oh christ.  That was just retarded... I could feel it slipping away from the Wings there in the 3rd OT...

It really seemed like the Penguins shots were real shots, and the Wings shots there in the last few minutes were kind of throwaways or something... I dunno.

Disappointing end there... that was a lot of damn hockey.
3522  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: NHL Playoff Talk on: June 03, 2008, 04:20:14 AM
Yeah, Fleury is amazing tonight.  I hate to say it, but Osgood has gotten really, really lucky on a few pucks... this should've been over a few times in both directions, but luck is saving the Red Wings (who are earning it by kicking ass anyway), and Fleury is saving the Penguins.
3523  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: NHL Playoff Talk on: June 03, 2008, 03:34:16 AM
Yeah, I think if Zetterberg hadn't gotten called on that totally BS penalty this game would be over right now... they were a goddamned steamroller at that point.
3524  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: NHL Playoff Talk on: June 03, 2008, 03:32:13 AM
Pens look totally exhausted at the end of the first OT.  I think Detroit is owning this game at this point, but Fleury is playing an amazing game, and the fact that the Penguins tied it with :34 left in the 3rd makes me nervous... you don't always win the games you deserve to.

Nail bitin' shit going on tonight!
3525  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: NHL Playoff Talk on: June 03, 2008, 02:43:50 AM
ARGH!  I can't believe that after just getting completely and utterly dominated for the entire 3rd that they were able to sneak one in and tie it up.  Man.

Ok... if the wings come out and play like they did that period, they'll win... the Pens don't really seem to have any gas left in the tank... they all look super beat.
3526  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: NHL Playoff Talk on: June 03, 2008, 01:51:00 AM
Goddamn this is frustrating to watch... I thought the Wings came out and were doing everything they needed to, but then the Pens scored two on what, four shots?  That seemed to get Detroit too wound up or something, and while they were coming back and really generating some good stuff in the middle of the 2nd, they've been flailing the last few minutes and just turning it over... and over, and over, and over...

Can't believe Filppula didn't get that 2 on one into the net... absolutely sick save by Fleury on that one.
3527  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: NHL Playoff Talk on: June 02, 2008, 08:13:49 PM
Well... he did say it was a good play... but then he has to downplay it to understate how bad the wings bitch slapped them in that 5 on 3 so that the Pens don't seem like total fuckups.  Of course both the pens and us know that they are.

They should have made it control the same way as character movement.

This is exactly how it worked on the 360 version, and everyone was crying their eyes out about it and how it should control the way it does in the PC version.  What can you do?
3529  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: NHL Playoff Talk on: June 02, 2008, 07:43:22 PM
I'm a wings fan, but... you are saying Crosby should blow Zetterberg in the middle of a competitive series.  Never going to happen.  Chillax.

Sometimes the lightswitch can be sitting in between off and on and then flip the rest of the way later.

The demo is multi only then?  I'm curious about the SP game.

I'm running a quad core 6600 or something... is that a number? And an 8800GT. I think.
3534  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mass Effect PC... Impressions? on: May 30, 2008, 03:54:10 AM
There is a new and better version of the pause menu... hold down shift and you have menus on either side for each team member, and down at the bottom for yourself... it's much easier to deal with.

I played through the intro part and I think it's better than the 360 version... mainly the shooting controls are much better, which speeds up the combat and makes it flow better... definitely looks better... I've got it cranked at 1600x1200 and it looks good and runs great.

I think unless you explicitly say you ARE seeing other people then if you are beyond the one or two dates point, you should probably be exclusive... or break it off... if there is dipping, doubly so... I think I'd be cheesed if I was seeing a girl who was seeing someone else too...

3540  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Anyone else playing the BF:BC Demo? on: May 29, 2008, 05:05:31 PM
Yeah, from the videos I've seen I'm *very* hopeful about this game's prospects for not sucking... hopefully it lives up to those expectations.

I didn't pre-order though... I want a demo first.
3541  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Mass Effect PC... Impressions? on: May 29, 2008, 05:03:29 PM
My copy came yesterday, but I won't get to crack it open until later.

I played a few planets into the 360 version, but when I saw that they were adding back in the better tactical control of squadmates that they had taken out before the 360 release, I ditched it to pick this up... I'm hoping it's good...

Anyone play last night?
3542  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: NHL Playoff Talk on: May 29, 2008, 04:57:50 PM
Figures that the good game is the one I only get to watch bits and pieces of... I got to watch the last 10 minutes, and that was some fun, intense stuff... I was really pulling for Detroit to get one in before the buzzer, but it wasn't in the cards.

Wings in 5.

Or do they treat goalies in the NHL just like they treat quarterbacks in the NFL? Put a skirt on them and don't let anyone touch them no matter where they are on the field/ice.

Pretty much.
3544  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: NHL Playoff Talk on: May 28, 2008, 08:48:11 PM
And I guess the 'purpose' is to keep goalies from playing pucks in the corners and give the offensive team more chances on the forecheck, in theory resulting in more offensive, and therefore more 'exciting' play.
3545  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: NHL Playoff Talk on: May 28, 2008, 08:44:18 PM
The trapezoid is the only place behind the net that the goalie is allowed to play the puck.  Some people call it the 'Brodeur rule'.

Didn't he just grab a light the second time?
3548  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: NHL Playoff Talk on: May 28, 2008, 03:53:04 PM
Yeah.... I dunno, I see players on all of the teams make sure they 'sell' the penalty... I definitely see the Wings do it too, but there's nothing out of hand there with any of them really from my point of view.  Once in a while, sure, they sell something totally pussy, but mostly it's just a bit of dramatic flair... I actually kind of felt like Franzen sold the Roberts hit harder than he'd been hit, but when a guy is coming up and punching you away from the puck, you gotta sell it and get the penalty, because that shit just shouldn't be going on, and needs attention drawn to it.

Let's face it, all of the guys on all of the teams are much tougher than they act... they can take some really brutal hits that are obviously legal and skate on like nothing happened... they know illegal contact when they feel it, and a lot of them, on all of the teams, make sure someone notices when they do.  That's not the Red Wings, that's the NHL...

Regardless, as mentioned, quesitonable calls and borderline flops weren't going to change the outcome of either of these games.

I'd like to see the Pens do a best of 7 against the Stars for the real second place... I have a feeling they would lose to them as well.  Maybe.

Also, I think they will still pick up one game...

Question:

Spoiler for Hiden:
If Indy's dad drank from the cup of everlasting life, why is he dead?

Answer:

Spoiler for Hiden:
the knight says that the "everlasting live" only lasts as far as the seal is in the entrance to the cave. The one that Elsa tries to take the cup past, which causes the cave to self-destruct. This is also why Indy is mortal and not living forever.

I thought that you just couldn't take the cup past the seal... but I guess your version jives better with the overall story.  What a stupid prize.

I have somehow, miraculously at times, avoided arrest my entire life.  I was once detained by the police at gunpoint... I apparently 'matched' the description of a suspect who was a full 14" shorter than me... who had black hair... yeah.

You don't think there was anything else in the movie that evoked the 50s?

Quote
Awesome! So in the next movie they can set it in the late '60s and have Indy fight the Vietcong, solve the Manson family murders, and hang out at Woodstock! Because that's pretty much how blatant an era cash-in this was.

Both of you missed the point of my statement.  The 50s equivalent of pulp cinema was science fiction.  The original Indy movies were blatant era cash-ins as well (especially Last Crusade with Hitler signing the book in Berlin) and Spielberg and Lucas from the get-go said this was going to be a sci-fi pulp film.

Well... not arguing for or against what you said, since I think the premise could've worked and my complaints were less about aliens and more about execution, but... just because someone says something is going to be X doesn't mean that X is a good idea...
3555  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Good Movies No One Has Ever Heard Of... on: May 27, 2008, 09:29:24 PM
District B13: Decent... not nearly as much fun action as I was expecting, but I enjoyed it.

Layer Cake: Great movie.

Equilibrium: Totally ridiculous, but pretty fun in a popcorn sort of way.

Boondock Saints: Totally overrated.

True Romance: It's got some good moments... Slater wears though.  Definitely mainstream.

Bubba Ho-Tep: Horribly overrated piece of crap.  I don't get why nerds have such a hard on for anything with Bruce Campbell.

Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang: LOVE this movie.  Fantastic dialog.

Spartan: I was a little let down by this because it sounded so awesome, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit.  Kind of fizzles out...

Brick: Really, really enjoyable movie.  I own this and watch it regularly.  Kind of silly if you don't get it, really good fun with great dialog if you do.  Man, I might have to watch this tonight.

Zero Effect: Thought this was a good one.  Good Pullman.  Unlike 'While You Were Sleeping.' Bad Pullman.

Reanimator: Great.

Kids: Crap.

Suspiria: Seriously creepy.

Repo Man: Punk rock classic.  But kind of shitty.

Ronin: Skylander, are you really talking about the DeNiro movie?  Because that's pretty damn mainstream.

Some of my picks, some of which might be pretty commonly watched around here:

The Apostle: Great movie for Robert Duvall fans... a southern preacher with a temper beats his wife's lover into a coma w/ a baseball bat... on a little league field... the then flees and looks for his own redemption...

Buffalo Soldiers: One of Joaquin Phoenix's better performances, in my book... he's a black market hustler in the end of the cold war Berlin... features Anna Paquin in her underpants... so that's good.

The Machinist: The only Christian Bale performance I've thought was really outstanding... a guy who hasn't slept in a year. He lost an idiotic amount of weight for the role.

Bloody Sunday: A pretty remarkable piece of film making from Paul Greengrass who went on to direct the later Bourne movies...

American Movie: A really funny, sort of not funny movie about a midwest loser trying to make horror movies... documentary... excellent.

That's all I can think of right now...

It's seriously mofo expensive though.... but there may be other similar places in the Jackson area that would be more affordable.

A bad Indiana Jones movie is still better than 90% of the other crap out there  icon_wink

Hey, something we agree on!  biggrin

I wish I could agree... and up until now I would've... I still like ToD even though it's not great... but this I just thought was a bad movie, and sadly just another silly greenscreened summer blockbuster.
3558  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Indy IV: Who's in for Midnight??? on: May 27, 2008, 04:59:18 PM
We all understand that the movies are summer popcorn flicks, but up until now they have always been summer popcorn flicks where the supernatural has occurred in an over the top but believable and gritty 'real' world, which is what sets them apart from the 'OMG SUMMER BLOCKBUSTER' movie of the current decade. With the new one they totally failed at that with all this green screen crap... it lacks the physicality of the world and the stunts in the other movies.

And yes, Spielberg and Ford bear some responsibility too, but the story came from Lucas... the scary part is that this is the version that came out after four years of Spielberg and Ford telling Lucas that he was being too 'out there'... I shudder to think what his original idea entailed.  They also all had to come to an agreement, and it seems obvious that the crazy ideas came from Lucas while the other two tried to tone it down to something more Indy.  Would holding out have resulted in no Indy 4 being made?  Maybe so.  Maybe that would've been for the best.

After the first act, it just lost that Indy 'feel', and turned into the Mummy Returns with the budget to make the Scorpion King look better...
3559  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: NHL Playoff Talk on: May 27, 2008, 04:49:50 PM
Yeah, I don't think Kronwall is a headhunter at all.  He goes all out to lay down hard hits, but he's almost always playing the game when he does it.

I was really impressed that they actually got Datsyuk to throw a punch.  If you can get that guy to throw down then you probably need to admit that you are playing dirty.

The punches on Franzen were totally, totally out of line.
3560  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Indy IV: Who's in for Midnight??? on: May 26, 2008, 05:25:24 PM
Man, I was super disappointed.  George Lucas really needs to be banned from making movies.

Spoiler for Hiden:
I was on board at the start... I thought all of the cold war stuff was fun and the action and chases were very physical and in keeping with what you expect from an Indiana Jones movie... then they hit the jungle and the entire thing came careening off the of rails... crappy green screen BS all over the place... it just became another shitty summer action adventure flick, devoid of the real physical stunts and charm of the previous films... the alien aspect was handled poorly, Karen Allen looked like an old leather handbag, the humor was too forced... sword fighting on the digital cars and swinging through the vines like a monkey are when I started getting pretty pissed off...  ugh.  They might as well re-title Speed Racer as American Graffiti Returns for how close they got to the feel of the originals.
