3443  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Warren Spector: games are too long! on: June 18, 2008, 11:04:31 PM
Yeah, I kind of agree that a lot of games are too long... I get bored... I also think that while for a while it seemed like the really good shooter/action titles were getting super short, they've kind of hit a nice middle ground lately, where it's not so short as to be over in one sitting (for me, anyway), but not so long that it just feels repetitive and dragged out for the sake of falsely extending the length of the game...  COD4, R6 Vegas, R6 Vegas 2, Crysis... longer than stuff like Max Payne a few years ago...

I'm also much more likely to go back and re-play a really well paced, reasonable length game like COD4 than I am to finish a game like GTA4... though I'll probably eventually finish that particular one...

3) Death of Lord Cutler Beckett from Pirates of the Carribean 3

Yer fucking kidding, right?

Spoiler for Hiden:
Slipped up on Hoth and Maquis, which I just guessed was also a Star Wars reference.

I'm surprised anyone actually went to this...

Zooey Deschanel is hot as fuck though.  I generally really, really like her, and wish she'd get cast more often in movies I would like.

She's #1 on the list.
3447  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: How the hell do you promote a website? on: June 17, 2008, 07:50:42 PM
I'd pad that box on the left... that was the one I was originally talking about.

Think about using bolded font for the 'titles' of the sections in there (e.g. .Welcome to the...., and 'Tips').

I would suggest making the content section of the site a fixed width (say, to display well on a 1024w screen), then work with what you have in that width to get it just how you want it instead of letting it be dynamic and messing up your formatting.
3448  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Talk me out of getting a Zune? on: June 17, 2008, 04:17:34 PM
The 30GB is the Zune 1.0 or some crap, and the 80GB is the 2.0... or some crap... the first model, and the newer model.

The 30GBs (which can at times be found for dirt cheap) will upgrade to the 2.x software, so you get the same features.

3449  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: How the hell do you promote a website? on: June 17, 2008, 04:15:17 PM
That's better... still need some padding on that leftmost box, and padding around the main light blue box so that your search controls and buttons are not sticking to the side of it.

You are on the path... At this point I would look at getting some nicer looking button graphics (also some *consistent* button graphics in terms of vertical alignment), and a less jaggy rating graphic.  Maybe make your banner graphic representative of what the site is about - have a rock band screenshot or something with the name of the site over it, and even better, an accompanying blurb that says exactly what people are looking at... and remove 'beta'... that's like saying 'under construction', when really... all web sites are under construction.
3450  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: How the hell do you promote a website? on: June 17, 2008, 03:54:21 PM
Well... compare it to the font size on this forum... it is bigger.  I think this size looks a lot nicer.

And if you just went with the default everything in HTML your website would look like poop, you know?

My MIL sells that stuff. Overpriced. WAY Overpriced. And all their products smell funny. Blech.

The 'smell funny' aspect is one of my big problems with most of it.

On the other hand, some of the cleaning products smell really good... and I actually made my wife do an item by item comparison before agreeing to it (and did a lot of poking around online as well, because I was dead set against it), and the prices worked out to be about even, or a little less.
3454  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Melaleuca on: June 17, 2008, 03:42:17 AM
Yeah, but not in an Amway sort of way... as mentioned, you don't sell products, you just get a commission for purchased by people you sign up... they just go to a website and order.  It's like online sam's club, but you try to trick your friends and relatives into it so you get a check... smile

I have the 30 GB Zune. My biggest complaint is the way you have to sync the files from your computer to the Zune via the Zune software. There is no drag and drop functionality. This can make updating a bit of a pain. Otherwise I am happy with the player itself.

You can't drag and drop from windows to the device.  But.  You can drag and drop from Windows to the Zune Software itself, and then let it auto-sync everything you drag and dropped.

Yeah, that's what I said above.  Do any of the big players allow windows drag/drop by default?

Also, as mentioned, I know people have done some sort of hack that allows you do use windows to drag/drop w/ the Zune.

Yep.  The fall Zune software was an improvement but the Zen is just a lot nicer/easier/more full-featured.

New software came out in the last month that addresses the tagging issues and adds some more browsing options...

My wife has gotten into this... I can't say I'm sold yet, and the business model creeps me out a bit... on the other hand, she's well on her way to having all of our cleaning supplies and a big chunk of our toiletries paid for each month... and with money as tight as it is, I can't call that all bad.

Some of the cleaning stuff seems really good... some of the toiletries smell (to me) like hippies or something... dunno.

You can drag and drop in the zune software... just like with ipod, but better since you can do it on multiple computers.

If you mean in windows... yeah, neither will.  Though you can hack the zune to work this way.

I've been enjoying my zune more since the new software came out.

I just finished this in SP.

Holy crap was the final 'scene' frustrating and dumb...  I hate it when games feel like they need to totally change up the game at the end to make it interesting... I must've tried it 20 times before I made it through the helicopter part.  I would've enjoyed a huge pitched battle, WITH my team, so, so much more.  Having a team is a large part of what makes a game like this interesting and fun, and this game took them away way, way too much.

I still enjoyed the game overall, but it was a far cry from the previous title, which remains one of my favorites.
3466  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: How the hell do you promote a website? on: June 13, 2008, 07:06:23 PM
It's getting better...

Couple suggestions...

On that main section that lists everything, try applying the style to the table row instead of to the table cell for that single line border... the spacer TD you have in there looks a little weird.  If you really want a box around each TD, have a separate class for each TD so that it doesn't have a rounded left corner on each of them.

I'd also add some padding to all of your tables, because things look a bit cramped, especially those left side boxes.

Finally, I'd decrease the size of the font a couple of points.

Use whatever layout works, but use CSS to style things instead of HTML... nothing uglier than an HTML table border, but CSS borders can be really nice and effective.

Yeah, finding a good drummer is the single hardest thing to do when forming a band... well, next to writing good songs...  That's why good drummers always have 5 bands. smile
3471  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: I need a drummer! on: June 12, 2008, 09:44:10 PM
Go to shows for music that you like and start meeting people... once you meet them mention you are looking for a drummer... they probably have several sleeping in their garage, in a closet in their basement, or with their sister.

Also... Joey... man... you start a new band and don't let me know? Sheesh.

Arial seems to the new kind of 'standard' non-retarded font... I like it.  Verdana is also a decent choice.

Don't underestimate presentation... not in getting people to your website, but in getting them to stay, and getting them to come back...

In a nutshell, what I'm saying is this: Don't let any Times New Roman appear on your site. Anywhere.

Walnuts are an abomination.  Unless they are in baclava, which I suspect is good in spite of the walnuts.  Why anyone likes them, I don't know... I also have the added bonus of an allergic reaction to them which leaves my mouth sore and itchy.
