2402  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Bittorrent questions on: November 09, 2004, 04:12:56 PM
If you get the bad data from tracker error, sometimes it helps to download the torrent file to your local drive, and run it from there.  Just right click and save the .torrent to your hard drive.

Also, bittorrent uses some ports that most routers close off by default, I think.  You might have to look up some settings on your network to make sure the necessary ports are open.  I think the ports are listed on the bittorrent website.  If you have the ports closed, I think it will still function, but at greatly reduced speeds.

Ok, I knew I would have to get one just because of Advance Wars.  But now I know I HAVE to get one.  Did you see that operation game?  Oh man, Life & Death was one of my favorite games of all time.  If this is anything like that, I'll scream like a little girl for joy.

2406  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Looking for a quality VGA video switcher on: November 05, 2004, 03:22:26 PM

Would a regular KVM switch work?
I suppose it could, though I was just wondering if anyone used or could recommend a specific product that had good video quality on both ends.  I tried the switch box as I said, thinking it would be a pretty simple thing to just switch the video signal from one input to the next, but apparently it's difficult enough that the quality variance was immediately evident.

JR - I'd recommend the X2VGA if you're just looking to hook up an Xbox to a monitor.  You have to order them from Hong Kong but I had no difficulties.

And wouldn't you know it, it looks like they're building in their own switch right into the hardware on the newer versions.  Bastards!
2407  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Looking for a quality VGA video switcher on: November 04, 2004, 10:18:38 PM
I tried doing a search for this but didn't turn anything up.

I have a retail Xbox at my desk at work.  Usually during lunch I'll hook it up to my second monitor and do some gaming.  I have an X2VGA that I use to  hook it up.

The problem is that every time I want to do this I have to crawl down under my desk, detach the cable from my computer, thread it through the tangle of wires down there, and hook it up to the x2vga.  I tried buying a cheap VGA switch from buy.com but as soon as I could hook it up I could see that the image from my computer was way blurry, almost unreadable.

So does anyone have a recommendation for a VGA switch that won't degrade the signal quality so much?  Thanks.

Hmm, an interesting development.  It seems very late in the game for any real changes to have been made, so I wonder what the deal is.  Unless it is just to avoid the Halo 2 hoopla.
What it usually means is that they failed Microsoft cert for some reason, have to fix an issue and go through the entire certification process again.

Whatever it is people see in her, it doesn't do it for me.  I actually find her rather unattractive believe it or not.  In the face at least.  No denying she's got a nice body.

Then again, my dream women are people like Jena Malone, Claire Danes and Janeane Garofalo, so YMMV smile

I agree with all the positive comments.  I just got finished with... chapter 3?  The one with the Arena-type thing.  That one was my favorite chapter so far.  I really really liked how they had individual events happening after EVERY SINGLE fight you did.  And how there was stuff going on that you could possibly miss.  You had to just wander around and look out for events.

The only parts I don't like are the parts where the professor just says "Yes, I think there's a pipe that leads there SOMEWHERE under town."  And that's it.    I don't like just aimlessly looking for some pipe somewhere.  But that's a small nitpick with a great game.

I was going to pick it up tonight, but I got to the EB and it was just wall-to-wall people.  I mean literally, it looked like there wasn't any room to go into the store.  I figured it wasn't worth a good 45-60 minute wait to get this game, so I headed on home.  Might check again tomorrow.

2417  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Hey lawyers (LSAT and GPA Q's) on: October 24, 2004, 04:10:04 PM
My ex took one of those Kaplan courses to prepare for the LSAT.  It cost something like a grand, but she says it was absolutely worth it.  I think her first LSAT score was a 155 or something around there, and her final real LSAT score was 163 if I remember right.  Basically you take a ton of practice exams, and they show you your score and how you did broken up by question types.  Then the teacher goes over each question type and you try to improve.

I'm not sure about GPA but I think it plays a role.  She had a 3.98 undergrad GPA, and got accepted to UVA Law, but turned down at Harvard.  She's now going to William and Mary, who offered a scholarship.

I got it yesterday along with my slimline pstwo.  The only thing I still have trouble with is the up/down turning, insofar as remembering which stick to press up and down for what direction I want to turn.  I always end up turning the wrong way.  But other than that, I don't see any big problem with the controls.

I know this will not make me popular with some former poster/"friends" and certainly none of the people that started the other site, but am I the only one that sees the other site as complete ego? It looks like a bunch of former moderators that couldn't stomach giving up their moderating powers and didnt like the stricter moderation of CG decided to just create a new site with R&P forums. All this seems to have done is fracture the community further, which seems petty when CG was willing to take us in.

I don't really see the big deal.  The issue at the end of the day is that there's no more GG.  All the guys at CG have done a terrific job of taking in the GG refugees, but you just have to face it - this isn't GG.  It's Console Gold and expecting it to change in drastic ways is not realistic.  The guys at BS.net are trying to recreate as much of what was GG as possible in ways that simple aren't possible or are unreasonable to expect here.  R&P as a seperate forum is just something that some people find important.  You can't just tell them "absolutely not" and expect them all to be just happy.  There are other things that some people just prefer - old moderator styles, for instance.  I'm not saying one is better or worse - I'll probably be splitting my time between both sites - but some people are going to want things the old way and I don't think it's an affront when they try and recreate that for themselves.

Aside to Rage - at least the Brutesquad guys return phone calls slywink
2426  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Gone Gold ending, what I think no one realized... on: October 14, 2004, 07:42:47 PM
Honestly, there were a lot of threads that contained things personal to me that I would've liked to have saved before the shutdown.  Mostly my threads where I whined about my relationship, but also pictures, funny stuff, a whole lot of things like that.  Just last night I wanted to look up something about Trent Steel's circuit to make sure I was doing it right, but oops, fuggedaboutit!

It's basically like a friend slammed the door in our faces, and I don't see that it's unexpected or inappropriate that people should be a bit displeased and upset about it.  Nothing we can do, but venting is perfectly fine.

2428  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Favorite GG moment on: October 11, 2004, 04:52:00 PM
One of my favorite memories was someone who posted a thread entitled "Bathroom Behavior (is this odd?)".  He talked about using the urinals, and flushing them before he was finished, then trying to race to beat the flush to finish.  Then a bunch of other people posted in the thread that they did that too.  And I thought it was just some weird, maladjusted behavior that I engaged in every once in a while.

That was the moment I truly realized that I am indeed a member of a Brotherhood of Man here on this planet

2430  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Blind date finale on: October 11, 2004, 02:41:15 PM
Ok, so here's a quick recap:

1) Had tickets to see Beastie Boys.  Posted an ad on Craigs List, talked to a cool girl, and made the date for Friday.

2) Thursday afternoon, she cancels, saying she has to work late but hopes she can make it up with dinner sometime.  I email back saying "we could go late and it'd be fine" but she says no dice, let her know how it is, and sorry.  She also again says we should definitely get together sometime later.

3) I get a coworker to go to the show with me, write her and say "Hope you don't feel bad, it's totally fine" and reiterate that I'd like to see her.  No response to this email.

4) I write her Saturday after the show and tell her how it went and say I hope she had a good time and say "hope to hear from you soon!"  No response as of yet.

5) Here's the kicker - Last night I was surfing Craig's List and I see a new personal that I'm 99.9% sure is her.  Unless there are actually tons of girls out there who list PBR and rockabilly as major interests, I'd say the similarities are striking and unmistakable.

So anyway, I think it's pretty obvious that I did or said something that made this girl suddenly lose interest.  I'm just wondering if anyone thinks that it's worth it to drop her one more line and just say something like "Hey, haven't heard from you.  Hope stuff is ok.  Here's my number, call me if you're free and want to hang out."  And if so, should I just go ahead and do it, or wait another day or two?  The last time I heard from her was Thursday, and the last time I emailed her was Saturday before noon.  I'm like Jon Favreau in Swingers, I want everything to happen right away smile  Anyway, thanks for the advice!
2431  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Single CG/GG Roll Call on: October 10, 2004, 03:13:56 PM
I'm single again after about 18 months of not being single.  Before that I was single about a year, and then before that I wasn't single for about seven years.  All the same girl.

Right now it sucks just because I'm depressed over the breakup, and my ex is in a rebound relationship.  My free time is generally wasted as I'm finding I'm having big concentration problems and I've lost interest in the things I used to enjoy like gaming in my free time, reading, writing, and drawing.  However, I'm making strides, attempting to line up a date here and there, getting out with friends now and then, and trying to meet new people.  I've been through this before so I know it will be a couple months before everything is back to normal, but I think it will be easier this time than last time.
2432  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Gone Gold Update on: October 10, 2004, 05:20:39 AM
/agrees with Hetz

A website is very tough to maintain and run.  I know this first-hand from difficulties running several of my own throughout high school and college.  However, I also realize that by consistently maintaining one, you take on some responsibility for the community you create.  I have all the sympathy in the world for Rich's health problems and his service to the gaming community.  I know he has a tough time with everyday things, and has more pain in a day than I've probably had in my lifetime.  In spite of that, it's hard to feel like GG was properly cared for when the problems have been going on for years and no real steward was ever appointed.  No one can replace Rich, but I would think someone could be designated as the go-to person when Rich is unavailable and the site is in trouble.  That there seems to be no one who is in that position is unfortunate, and seems irresponsible to the community.

Maybe the problems couldn't have been avoided and I'm just being a big asshole.  I admit that's a possibility.  But the lack of communication is not promising.  People out there like me loved Gone Gold.  That's why I think it's ok to show a little bit of consternation when you go to look for it one day and it's simply disappeared.  It may be a cheesy analogy, but it's like a good friend has just up and left town and not told anyone why or where he's going or if he'll be back.  That would hurt, and in a kind of way, the way all this has gone down hurts in a similar manner.  Hopefully if the site can't be resurrected, the community that was there will live on in this or another site.  Definitely thanks to Rich for the great site, but I'm sorry it had to end the way it did, if this is indeed the end.

Whatever happened with that girl that you were supposed to go to the concert with, did you two hook up at another time?
Don't want to turn this into my thread, but the basic story is just that she told me in two seperate emails that we need to get together sometime.  That was on Thursday and haven't heard back from her.  I emailed her today and told her about the concert and said "Hope to hear from you soon!"

I figure if I hear nothing more by Monday evening or so that I'll drop her one last line and basically forget it.  I suppose I am just anxious because coming so soon from an LTR, I expect these things to go a lot faster than they usually do smile  Ah well, that's women for you.  I hope you worked out your own dating situation favorably, as well.

There was another video more recently where a guy was playing it and doing the VO (while beating down another dev at the same time - most funny). He walks over to the Warthog then shoots off the hubcaps, then I could swear he blows out the tires as well because they try driving it and it lists big-time complete with sparks flying. Now, that may just be me blowing smoke up my own ass, but that's what my memory says.
On the e3 video he says that damage affects how well the vehicles drive, and there are definitely sparks coming out of the front panels.  Maybe that's what you're thinking of.
2436  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Halo 2 Information [Leaked Beta Info] on: August 18, 2004, 03:53:53 PM
I don't remember the tires being shot out (from the e3 presentation).  I remember the hubcaps being shot off though.  I don't see where he says that there's no vehicle damage, just no shooting out tires.

Edit - yeah just watched the video again and the warthog takes tons of damage - he shoots the rocket launcher at it over and over, but the tires don't go out.  Probably would present a lot of problems to the driving/physics model.

Did you expect to see a game more like the original?
A game LESS like the original was what I expected.  This thing is damn near identical!  The settings are EXACTLY the same.  The characters are just about identical.  The "script" is virtually the same.  The annoyances are identical - not knowing what any of the crap in the shop does, not being able to save your progress, etc.

What did they change?  They took out multiplayer.  They inflated all the prices.  They gave you more moves and made the controls less responsive.

You think in the 15 years since the original they might have improved things.  Nope, they tried to make the same damn thing over again, and made it worse.  79% is far too kind.
