I just so happen to have Bioshock sitting on the floor...w/box and inserts if you are into such stuff.
I've also got some other wargame type games around as well. I'm sure I've got something around that may interest you. Will try a private message but I might not be able to send to you (OO refugee lurker).

Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW is now spyware
|
on: November 04, 2005, 11:39:09 AM
|
|
Okay, this will keep down casual cheaters. But I still don't like having my privacy rights trampled on. People bitch about Starforce but no complaints about this?
And, oh yeah , check out this new twist to the "warden" saga:
"Defeat WoW spyware using Sony's rootkit
Blizzard, makers of World of Warcraft, have deployed spyware to catch "cheaters." If you want to avoid the spyware, you can install Sony's rootkit DRM (just load a store-bought CD with Sony's DRM on it) and then use its cloaking capabilities to hide your WoW app: World of Warcraft hackers have confirmed that the hiding capabilities of Sony BMG's content protection software can make tools made for cheating in the online world impossible to detect. The software--deemed a "rootkit" by many security experts--is shipped with tens of thousands of the record company's music titles.
Blizzard Entertainment, the maker of World of Warcraft, has created a controversial program that detects cheaters by scanning the processes that are running at the time the game is played. Called the Warden, the anti-cheating program cannot detect any files that are hidden with Sony BMG's content protection, which only requires that the hacker add the prefix "$sys$" to file names. "
Again, the hackers win and the rest of us lose our privacy rights....

Sorry to hear that the crowd caused a bad time. Although I haven't been to a movie in years (kids) I'd suspect I'd find the same things going on around here.
I almost feel it is sometimes worth it to hit a matinee mid-week. Then you get a hard core audience that is truly interested in the showing (or no audience at all). The only problem is that you don't get an audience reaction.
People also sneak their lunches in for matinees - I still associate "The Crying Game" with the smell of tuna. Weird, huh?

Blowing the dust of my collector's copy (#22938 of 62000) to install This gem has been sitting at my feet for years unplayed! To get us in the mood here's a listing of the box contents (ala Slim Pickens in Dr. Strangelove) - Texas accent optional : 1 package of still wrapped Baldur's Gate II character cards 1 chunky wire bound manual - 260 pages! Unfortunately they don't make 'em like this anymore. Definitely passes the lift test 1 Coupon for 10.00 off of Icewind Dale 1 Quick reference card - Wow, that's alot of spells! 1 Black Isle notepad with various game characters (unused) 1 ad for Creative EAX four point surround speakers (40.00 off until December 31, 2000). Probably could find these for cheap on Ebay now 1 Interplay ad brochure for Icewind Dale, Baldur's gate, Neverwinter Night (coming soon), Torment (great game!), and Fallout 2 1 Troubleshooting for the game (think anyone now answering the phone now even knows who Interplay is?) 1 "Cloth" map detailing the game world (more like a napkin) 4 "custom collectors edition" gold CD roms 1 Bonus disc with "exclusive" weapons (and tracks from the original game) 1 promo ad detailing Icewind Dale, Baldur's Gate (orig), Torment, Neverwinter Night, and a game that never was - TORN. Coming soon, huh? How about never. Shame really...the games never played always look better than the played ones. Oh, what coulda been... Anyone else find some of this ephermea interesting? Always nice to dig through some old game boxes. Well, off to the install and character creation...be back in a bit

If you can find the HOMM compendium you'll get HOMM1, HOMM2, and the HOMM2 expansion. Nothing currently on EBAY except for an overpriced copy of HOMM2 gold for 24.99. Now if I can find my other HOMM collection maybe we can swing a deal for the HOMM compendium I have on my desk. Don't need two of the same game. Just remember that there aren't any manuals. I'm pretty sure I can beat the 24.99 price as well

Stupid question, BUT I'll ask anyway....
I seem to be off version to join the servers mentioned (Danza/Hark).
Is this due to the 01.01 patch debacle? Or is it me?
Even though I'm horrible (at this point), I promise not to shoot anyone on my team
P.S. - I'd even be interested in paying for a seat if I could get on the server

Title says it all. Drove past my local Gamestop and it looks like the perennial deal is once again in full force (probably for a week) here in the physical stores in NJ.
I'd swear the SOBs time this to happen shortly after I buy two used games.
Well, I wasn't able to get the deal, BUT that doesn't mean you shouldn't soak the bastards.
Good hunting!

As always YMMV on the following deals at Target (never see the same deal at most), BUT one of my local stores had the following games on the endcap at a nice discount:
Armies of Exigo (19.99) Battle for Middle Earth - DVD edition (19.99)
The Battle for Middle Earth deal looked like it was only for the DVD version (as the regular CD ROM edition was still full price).

Of course, doesn't everyone hate the French? Lame as that old saw is it never gets old Hell they probably hate themselves. If the self-loathing in thread is any indicator I'd expect the French spit every time they see themselves in the mirror  I thought the article was funny. But as always, snickers and guffaws are optional.

If you'd like check out Barnes and Noble's magazine section. Some of the ones here in NJ stock the magazine.
An explanation for the price - It comes with a different themed CD ROM each issue (one recent CD had Beneath a Steel Sky complete with the SCUMM? emulator). Others have included C64 music and another had aropund 200 emulated games (with the emulators). The mag is also out of England, so this might also help explain the high price.
I've bought a few copies and I've generally enjoyed the articles. One detailed how to build a MAME cabinet. And europe seems to have had some different systems like the Gremlin so you might be seeing some pretty cool games that you've never heard of (unless you live in Europe).
Ebaying for copies is a little pricey, as the first copy was going for something like 50.00+ dollars. If I had any left in my read pile I'd send em your way BUT they went to the dust bin about a mont ago.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What flight sims have the best dynamic campaign?
|
on: May 14, 2005, 07:27:54 PM
|
If I recall a "new" Falcon 4.0 is soon due out with both the Korean Campaign and another (sorry, cannot recall the exact theater). Ebgames says the title is "Falcon 4.0 Allied force" (release date 6/28/05) with an added campaign in the Balkans. 32.99 might be a little steep if it doesn't include a decent manual. Might be able to Ebay a nice old version with the three ring binder or chunky book and augment with user made mods. They don't call it a study sim for nothing With mods and other upgrades on the original game you can fly almost any plane in the sim as well (not just vipers). Also had some nice paint jobs and other upgrades (bigger badder explosins, etc).

Gaming / Analog Gaming / Chess...learning and playing
|

I've been trying to get better at chess. Even a little better would be better than the level that I play. Stupid mistakes but all part and parcel of a beginners mind. It looks like chess takes time and study. No problem with that, but I just want some beginner paths to start out on. I want to go a little beyond the training in Chessmaster and work through some paper Although the PC is fine there is something about pushing wood that a PC doesn't replicate. You see different things when you actually play. Maybe I lend too much credence to osmosis I've been looking through some books I saw in a Listmania! on Amazon and they seem to be helping a little. I like the list just because the author has a lot of cheaper Dover editions old chess master stuff. Might be the wrong stuff for a beginner however (P.S - I've tried Pandolfini and the guy just bores me to death) Here are a few that I have in the library: Bobby Fisher teaches chess by Bobby Fisher Chess Master vs Chess Amateur by Max Euwe Art of the checkmate by Max Renaud Lasker's Manual of Chess by Emmanuel Lasker Any ideas on other books and activities? I'm not confident enough to play club chess (yet) but I plan on it once I get better.

Not sure if this is just B&M, but my local Gamestops are having a buy two used get a third free sale. Strange, but alot of them seem pretty well stocked (it being so soon after xmas and all). Also saw Ninja Gaiden (Xbox) used for 29.99. Was in my price range so I got it (along with more than a few PS1 games you've all suggested).

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The time has come-list the best Playstation 1 games!

Strange how sometimes two isolated things happening (a recent trip trip to Gamestop to buy an old PS1 game and the installation of ePSXe on my PC) make you think about things. Like the fact that alot of PS1 games are now dirt cheap!!!
True, they are so last gen, but they do still have some gaming goodness. I realized that last night after playing Tomba for an hour and a half
I'm looking to generate a shopping list so that next time I go to Gamestop I can look for some good cheap games. Maybe not in that order, but the operative word is good. Cheap can be dealt with as the wallet dictates.
I did happen to find a list on an English mag site Games. May not all exist in the USA, but it is a good starter list :
1. ISS Pro Evolution 2 2. Metal Gear Solid 3. Gran Turismo 4. Tekken 3 5. Final Fantasy IX 6. Resident Evil 2 7. Medal Of Honour 8. WWF Smackdown! 2 9. TOCA 2 10.Syphon Filter 2 11.Driver 12.Ape Escape 13.Medal of Honor Underground 14.Vagrant Story 15.Wip3out 16.Dino Crisis 17.Future Cop: LAPD 18.Vigilante 8 19.Bushido Blade 20.Rage Racer
There were some others I saw in a few threads as well :
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Syphon Filter Street Fighter Collection
Anyone else have some PS1 game suggestions? Any genre, just the good ones (In Your Humbe Opinion)
Thanks!
My apologies if this has been covered before!

I'm down with that picture - To Xmas disasters Already in th past 24 hrs I've: 1.) Seen a fight in a local Target (some lady bumped into a man with her cart and then they got into an F Bomb war) 2.) dropped the Key lime pie in the oven (goo and graham crakcer everywhere in a hot oven) 3.) Had my Wife get my brother angry after telling him (rightfully I may add) to quit poking and prodding at our two year old My Mother-in-law will be coming today (with the sister-in-law and boyfirend) and I can only guess one of them will cause some sort of trouble. Did I mention that the mother in law might spend the night? The good news is that I have copious amounts of alcohol to combat this situation. It isn't much but it is all I've got. Desperate men and all that Oh, yeah, Merry Christmas!

Awww hell, just go to DVD style boxes and everyone will be happier.
Games will be protected, you won't need a paper box, and you will have enough room for a light manual (as most come today given the ultimate rip off strategy guides).
Even better - more DVD games. Then we won't need 5+ cds for installs.

Strange but true:
I've got a copy of F-15 that you can have BUT...
It is just a jewel case version with just an insert. And the insert is in Thai. But not the game - it is in English. I would suspect that if you are proficient with some of the other Janes Sims you should be able to play this game.
Purchased at a local computer show from some "mad Russians". Who knows where they got it.
If you can use it for more than a coaster, I'll gladly send it to you for the price of postage. In either case email (karapcik AT erols.com) or PM me.

Hmmm...from an ad on my EB bag to the TV
Not much personal interest in this one, but I can understand that some fans might want to watch. If not to enjoy than to pick apart.
Anyone here ever read Le Guin's edited Norton Sci-Fi Antholgy? I remember reading in a survey book/essay (Disch's "The dreams our stuff is made of" I think) that more than a few people found her take on the Sci-Fi canon to be lacking. And too PC. From a Amazon review:
"There's an element of political correctness to the story selection, an element of pure feminism, and as element of weirdness and mystery. What can she possibly have been thinking? How can anyone be said to know anything about science fiction without going back a little further, to the so-called "golden age" of science fiction which a lot of these stories are reactions against? How can a study of science fiction not include Asimov, Heinlein, or Clarke? The most likely audience of this book is not well served by the story selection. "
Like a car accident, I can't look away and I am more interested after reading the above. Might be interesting to pick up if only to see what is in the anthology and what is out.
