1241  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Marvel Ultimate Alliance Tips/Hints/Tricks? on: December 06, 2006, 05:04:39 PM
I found "Normal" difficulty not too bad when I played single player, and a bit too easy when I played co-op.

All the heroes are pretty fun to play.  In particular, I liked Thor (good in melee, can fly, good ranged attacks), Luke Cage (great tank) and Spiderman (decent blaster if you level him up that way, web swinging is fun).   As far as teams go, I think the team I used the most was one of the Avengers variants (Thor, Iron Man, Ms. Marvel, Captain America).

I started a second run-through with the Fantastic Four.  That was fun, too.  Once Invisible Woman gets her force-fields, enemies that rely on ranged attacks are pretty much doomed.

I'd turn off the auto select, particularly for powers.  The computer seems to put a few dots into all the powers, but you really get more bang for your buck if you max out 3 or 4 of them.

Rocked some MP tonight with PeteRock, Jancelot and a new friend Gladguy.  Also got some in with Jarrodhk, Mmoriarty, papasmurf and someone else (edit: Ceekay) and someone else...

I got pwned more than I pwned- especially in the 4x4, but I began to pick it up quickly.

2x2 was a hoot too. Lotsa killin.  Pete and Jance are a great team.

Tip:  Shotgun>Chainsaw in most close quarters situations unless I'm the one with the shotgun  retard

Also: See this thread.

I was the 2nd someone else.  Good times.  I'll try and be on tonight.

Questions:
Birdbath: Is there a way to get water in it? It's empty and my birds won't go near it.

I think the only purpose of the birdbath is to attract the crow pinata.  It starts out a baddie, but is pretty easy to convert.  I was never able to get water in the birdbath.

Swan with a pig???  Ok I need to know how to get a pigxie heh.

Swan and pig both ready for romance, plus have the builder make a 'mystery house' with a picture of something that mostly looks like a pig.

I found that my swans and pigxies fought like mad, and that the swans would not breed with each other while the pigxie house was in my garden.

Yeah, I think both my swans and pigs were constantly trying to kill off their unholy offspring.

I'm going stronger with this than I think I should be at this point...  Has anyone else gotten a Pigxie?  I was surprised that mine seemed, well, a little off...

Yep, I got one.  I was thinking they were going to be these cute, little fluttery things.  Guess I got what I deserved for breeding a swan with a pig.  icon_wink

I've got too many species running around my garden right now, but I think I'm gong to trim it down to sheep, bees, crows and bats when I get home.  And one monkey.  He amuses me, so he gets to stay.

Does your monkey sleep a lot?  I swear my monkey sleeps 20 hours a day.

He seems to sleep at random times, but not too frequently.  The sheep seem to constantly be snoozing, though.

Picked this up on Saturday.  Only planned on playing for an hour or two.  Next thing I know, I've got the 10 hours played achievement.  Then I put in another 3.   Now I'm at work wondering where my weekend went. eek

Great game.  I love it when some poor pinata bites it and all his friends rush over to consume his sweet, sweet innards.  And having to defend the garden against sours and such adds an element that was missing from the other games I've played in this genre (Harvest Moon, Animal Crossing).

It'll be fun to paint with the kids, and see what they can do.  With the fall/winter coming, always nice to have 'calm' activities to do in the house.

I don't think I've played the game in about 5 years, but remember the painting aspect to actually be very calming.  I kept up with it for a while even after my gaming group lost interest in 40K.

Sort of odd that painting various gentically modified killing machines is relaxing, but it is.  icon_wink

Something I've noticed re: the survivor AI.  The Go-To command is incredibly useful.

At first, I was just yelling at any survivors to follow me every few seconds.  Much more useful to tell them to go to a certain point with aim +"Y".  They still get hung up occasionally, but they seem to choose better paths.  Plus it makes it much easier to babysit large groups.   You can send them into the back of a large store and zombies will generally leave them alone until you've cleared a path to the zone exit or rescued any stragglers.

Spoiler for Hiden:
I was even able to save all the survivors in the movie theater using this method. Best I ever did before was 2.

Given how short the game is, and how it's designed for playing through multiple times, I get the impression that this conscious design decision was intended to really hammer home the tension of having just this 72-hour timeframe to get through.  Forces you into the same tension of being in that situation, where you have to make snap decisions and stick with the results of your choice.

I'm finding that the game has a bit of a different feel now that I'm on my 2nd 72 hour run (I borked the last case the first time around).  Starting the game at level 21 has given it more of an action-movie feel.  Even though I still get killed/lose survivors on a regular basis, I feel more like an ass-kicker and less like a shlub.   icon_biggrin  The game definitely has a lot of replay value.

Sniper cannon (again, assuming you did well onthe missiosns that give them to you) can also be useful.

Also, don't go with a heavy hound that's slow to move, you want to be able to RUN AWAY. slywink

Yeah, definitely make a relatively quick sniper hound for this one.  What I did was take a pot shot at the enemy leader (not the Commander with the NA) at maximum range.  That caused him and his buddy with the short range weapons come after me.  Taking the two of them out while slowly retreating was sorta simple after that.

Now that I think about it, I may have seen the stars and wrote them off as decoration.

Anyone with the full version dropped the arcade difficulty and still gotten achievements.  Not getting achievements would be the only reason I don't turn the difficulty down when I get home tonight.

The only acheivement I've gotten has been on the default difficulty, but from the descriptions, I believe a few are difficulty-level independant.

I'm really starting to dig snipers.  I made a build with those big honkin downloadable sniper cannons and a few sniper rifles.  So much fun tagging enemy hounds 3-4 grids away, even without the satisfying kersplosions you get when using a heavy gunner.  Sniper duels are a blast, too.

I'm thinking that they need a dedicated commander's screen.

Definitely.  It's really too hard to keep track of who is running what as it is now.  Even if you could only do the "view hound" thing in the mission lobbies, it would probably be a big help.

I love the idea of being a scout, but the reality is..I like surviving battles more.

It seems like I should be able to scout and light towers and run away from battles, but in actual combat situations, I find that I can't get away quickly enough and end up really badly damaged and then I'm limping along until I get destroyed.  I s'pose I could try smoke and see how that goes.

I'm finding that, when I play a scout, if I run as soon as I grab something's attention, I usually end up OK.  It's all about darting in and out a zillion times.  I can generally distract AI enemies pretty easily, even if I can't destroy them.

The problem is that other humans are usually smart enough to just ignore me.  smile
