I picked this up today, but with Forza 3 and MW2 taking up my time I might save this for the holidays. Glad that the reviews have been so overwhelmingly positive.
1602  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Modern Warfare 2 Impressions [And official GT Review] on: November 18, 2009, 12:27:01 AM
I hit the wall today in MW2. I was playing with a few of the group in regular TDM mode and it seemed that I was getting hammered constantly. Finally I decided to switch to Hardcore TDM and that was better, until I dropped into a group of twit adolescents. We were on the jungle town map (the one with two bridges) and they were whining that people were hiding in buildings. It's hardcore, twits.

I know that Hardcore isn't a favorite of a lot of folks, but it really slows down the game. It makes silencers and heartbeat sensors more important, and the Cold Blooded and Ninja perks become a real option. Also popping a UAV at the right time can be a game changer. But I will try to get back into regular mode.

It's so quiet in Mercenary TDM, I wish they had Hardcore Mercenary TDM.

After putting up with the asshole chatter I finally gave up and went into Assassin's Creed 2 just to download and install my Gamestop Exclusive Content, then fired up Forza 3. I'll probably get back into MW2 tomorrow.

1603  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Modern Warfare 2 Impressions [And official GT Review] on: November 17, 2009, 01:21:39 AM
After playing around with Perks since the game was released, I'm tending on focusing on the same ones for most of my loadouts, and surprisingly it doesn't include Cold Blooded/Ninja. Mind you, this is for non-Hardcore TDM, I'd have to consider them for Hardcore.

Anyway, I'm liking Killstreak+1. I have UAV, Care Package and Predator as my three Kill Rewards (obviously I'm not planning on 25 kill streaks  icon_biggrin). This way I can contribute to the team even when I can't hit a damn thing. I also carry a Stinger. And I like to machine gun down enemy UAVs.

For Perk 1 I was using Scavenger, but it turns out that only my M4A1 loadout seemed to need the picked up ammo. Now I'm using Bling once I have a couple of attachments I like to use.

For Perk 3 I'm not quite sure which I like, yet.

I do know that I'm pretty useless with Sprinting. And I'm probably not going to use SMGs. However, I'm thrilled with my LMGs. I might end up with custom loadouts of nothing but LMGs.

By the way, the Forzatune settings are changed more than I expected for F3. Different baseline caster and differential settings, on top of the stiffer suspension settings I already expected.

Do you have a new link? I checked the old FM2 tuning page and I don't see a link to a new FM3 page.

Need to stop playing Team Death Match, too many people are camping. There would be minutes where there was no noise at all, no bullets, no grenades, nothing, just peace. And with every map having so many nooks and crannys for people to hide in, it gets really old, really fast to turn a corner and be shot by someone hiding. I know it's a valid strategy, but when everyone does it, it takes from the fun.

they give you plenty of tools to deal with camping.  from the heartbeat sensor to the riot shield.  There are counters to pretty much every tactic.  Only tactic that pisses me off to no end is bunny hopping which I feel has no place in any game but Halo. slywink

I've been playing mostly non-Hardcore TDM and I'd LOVE it if there was more camping. The enemies seem to constantly moving and shooting. I pick a spot, making sure no one is behind me, and five seconds later someone runs up behind me and whack me. It's one reason I like Hardcore, people don't run as much.

Hark, am I right that only Ninja defeats the heartbeat sensor? I've been using Cold Blooded and Steady Aim, but I'm thinking I should go Ninja instead for Perk 3.

TDM Express! Nice.

Giving the people what they want. More death, less waiting.

Yeah, I unlocked Claymores, but I don't seem to be using them like I did in the past two CODs. I have been trying Blast Shield as well, can't really tell how well it works. It's nice that there are a number of options for that slot.

Hark is right, an AA weapon in secondary is a must for a couple members of the team at least. I'm carrying a Stinger since I can do more damage with that than a rifle against the other team.

I thought it happened pretty regularly, but that doesn't seem to be the case when I have FMJ equipped.  Perhaps I'll try using the "Bling" perk so that I can equip both FMJ and one of my scopes so that I don't have the use iron sights, but I still see this taking quite some time.  But I'd really like to unlock all attachments for at least one weapon.  Just one.  And FMJ is all I have left for the FAMAS rifle.

Hmmm...I guess I'll be equipping the FMJ as soon as possible then. I'd like to get the FAMAS rifle completely unlocked as well, and it's sounding like the FMJ challenge is by far the longest.

I'm pursuing the same "FMJ" challenge, getting 40 penetration hits for the M4A1. I started yesterday and this afternoon when I stopped playing I had 34 of the 40. As Pete says, the best option is to equip the M4A1 with  FMJ and a good sight. The best maps are the ones with metal walls, like Scrapyard. Basically you look for someone who's shooting from partial cover and then try to shoot them through the cover. Unfortunately sometimes you end up going through an entire magazine without getting a kill, which also tends to expose you as well. I am a fairly lousy shot and have the reactions of a paralyzed otter, yet am up to 34 of the needed fourty kills. So it shouldn't be impossible for anyone. Tedious, frustrating, murder on your K/D ratio, but not impossible.

Mind you, I doubt I'll try to get the 40 FMJ kills for any other weapons  icon_eek

This game looks compelling for obvious reasons. However, as a 'graying' gamer is there any reason for me to pick this up for the single player campaign? I long ago lost the ability to keep up MP but enjoy some of the newer titles if the difficulty is somewhat manageable.

we've got some aging gamers who play in our MP matches as well.  Pretty sure one of them is nearing 60 though I won't mention his name for fear that he might shoot me slywink

1610  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Modern Warfare 2 Impressions [And official GT Review] on: November 12, 2009, 02:51:46 AM
I got in about six hours of MP today, all TDM, and had a blast. I was writing down the map names and identified fourteen of them. And all of them pretty good.

I was concentrating on all the challenges for the M4A1. I got all of the attachments for the M4A1 except the extended mag, which I don't get till I get 40 penetration kills using FMJ. I got eight in a couple of maps, then a couple more in the next map, and then it seemed impossible. It's so frustrating since I got past the other  challenges easy enough. I guess I'll keep trying.

I have to keep in mind that in COD4 and CoDWaw I never got the challenges for a bunch of weapons. No need to force myself to spend time on weapons or options I  just don't like.

Since it's rare that I'm going to get kill streaks over five, and usually less, I'm using the perk that gives me the kill streak reward one kill earlier and my first one is the UAV. This way I help out my team by getting more UAVs up. Also this way other members of the team can focus on other kill streak options.

I'll be on again tomorrow afternoon and am planning on joining the Geezers Friday night.

I'd list my current K/D, but I'm having trouble converting the Roman notation to a ratio. Old timers, you know  slywink

And if Prestige works in this game like in the previous two, those ahead in levels will be back at level one sometime soon. It's a great game mechanic that keeps those who started early from always having an advantage.

Canceled my dentist appointment, left work early and picked up my copy at Gamestop a little after noon. Only four people in line at two registers, so it didn't take long, especially since the two guys in front of my weren't doing any trade-ins or other transactions. I carried my copy out to my car and as is my habit, I opened the package and examined the disk. And for the first time since I got Total War: Medieval, the disk had a flaw. Thank goodness for being diligent. I went right back in and back to the same clerk and swapped it out.

Played four hours of MP with several of the regulars including Hark and Teggy. Had a great time. Really a lot of fun with bigger maps, lots of great features and surprisingly well-performing server support. I really expected things to go to hell on opening day, but most matches were without significant lagging. It did seem like were were rotating among only a few maps, but they were good maps.

I then took a little break and then tried the Campaign. I wasn't terribly impressed, but then I wasn't a big fan of the campaigns of the previous two editions. Way too linear.

I went back and played another hour of MP, this time Mercenary Team Deathmatch. Again I had a great time and surprisingly enough in the fifth and six rounds I saw two new maps I hadn't seen in the previous four and a half hours. I think for TDM that's now about a half-dozen maps and all of them pretty good.

And, dare I say it, I may not immediately dive into Hardcore TDM when it gets unlocked. I didn't find the non-hardcore combat to be too difficult in getting kills.

Right now, unless something really bad happens, I'll say that this COD has the best MP of all  icon_biggrin

link in the post right after spacely sprockets up above. That's a Forza 2 one which will still work fine. The iphone app is about to get its first round update for Forza 3, so I'd imagine an updated web based one will be along soon.

I used the web based app. My C class Rabbit did seem to handle better. The major test however was trying to get my Holden to quit being such a bear to drive. I got the data and made the changes (quite significant!), then tried it in a race at Silverstone. I think it handled better, but I finally did have to give in and turn on ABS and TCS, otherwise it's just too hard to control. I've spent about 80K on upgrades for the Holden so I am loath to give up on it, but sheesh it's such a pain. Honestly I'm ready to put it up for auction, just so I won't keep beating myself up trying to be able to win with it.

In other FM3 news (I love this game) my "Killer Rabbit" team has expanded and now boasts VW Rabbit GTi cars upgraded for all classes from F to A, with an S class to follow.

If I don't want a Season race or an Event List race, I can use Free Play to run against the AI, but I don't get money or XP. However, if I go into Multiplayer, set up a race with seven AI, I can select all the variables and I get money and XP, even racing just against the AI. I'll have to test to see how what's received in MP matches up against Career race...

I just tested running in the MP against seven AI versus running the same race in Career mode. I used the same difficulty settings (all off, manual tranny, medium AI) in a D class race on the Catalunya School Circuit, five laps. The XP received was the same, 5,600. Money for the MP was slightly less at 10,080 versus 10,360. The cash difference in MP is 280 less, not a big deal. Maybe one of the difficult setting percentages isn't the same in MP.

So the only big change is there is no rewind in MP! Other than that, you can run a race with car you choose on a track you choose, make the same XP and almost the same money. Pretty cool.

Cool. I was disappointed when the game gave me three choices for my next set of career races and they were all above class F. I spent tons of time tweaking and designing my class F Yaris that I wanted to drive it around in one more set of races.

You don't have to go to MP if you want to keep driving that Yaris. In the "Go Race" menu, just select "Event List" instead of "Season Play". In the resulting matrix, the green blocks are races or series where you can use your current care, the blue ones require a different car that you have in your garage, and the grey ones need a car you don't currently have. If there is a check mark in the box you have already completed the series, getting all "gold". So you can pick a car and then pick a series.

No, it doesn't tune for you. Wish there was an auto tune option, I'm hopeless at it. Best thing is to look for free well-rated setups on the Storefront and give them a try.

Quote from: wonderpug on November 06, 2009, 04:46:59 PM

Anyway, this app (or their web based calculator) is definitely noob friendly.

Step 1: buy racing suspension, roll bars, brakes, and differential so that the tuning options are open to you. (Great part of this is that it barely budges your PI rating despite the advantages.)
Step 2: from the part purchasing screens (press Y someplace where it shows the bar graph stats) look up your car weight, engine/drive config, weight distribution, and tire width.
Step 3: plug the numbers into the tool
Step 4: go into the car tuning screen and enter all the settings the app gives you

And viola!  Faster car.

Damn, wish they had one for the Palm. Is there a port of this app for the PC?

I drove my first R3 race today and had to switch on ABS and TCS, and I still got trashed by the AI. Wow, so different than even racing in A class. I'm going to have to rethink my assists at the "R" level races.

The R classes are all about careful and smooth application of throttle, at least they are if you want to do them without the assists on. Just requires a little more care than the more normal classes.

I just ran another R3 race at Catalunya but with my newly acquired Class R3 Ferrari #62 Risi Competizione F430GT. I turned off all assists, kept the manual transmission, but chickened out and set the AI on easy. Still 80% bonus points. Wow, what a difference from the Holden! I could control the power slides and pretty much keep the car where I wanted. I think I could have won even with the AI at medium. As I was about to cross the finish line I checked my drift score. It was 8448, and I wasn't even trying to drift!

Oh, and I also found out something else. Unlike Forza 2 (I think that's true), in FM3 you can paint and decal the race cars, I know because I just removed all the colorful detailing on the Holden. I guess it's the role playing aspect of the game, I just don't like driving someone else's design.

Hyundai Genesis Coupe takes digital form in Forza Motorsport 3: Rhys Millen Racing Red Bull, HKS and FM3 Genesis Coupes as DLC November 17th!

Kept seeing all those Hyundai Genesis Coupe ads on the NYC track, now we know why.

Quote
To celebrate the flourishing “Forza” community, Hyundai will be gifting a free downloadable vehicle package on Xbox LIVE on Nov. 17, 2009. The package will include the Rhys Millen Racing Red Bull Hyundai Genesis Coupe, HKS Genesis Coupe and a one of a kind Genesis Coupe. The Hyundai Genesis Coupe will also boast its own race series within the Career mode of the game. Hyundai is also developing an online photo and video upload contest for “Forza” gamers who can show off their best in-game photo and video of the Genesis Coupe in action.

Let me repeat what might be the most important part of that quote... "The Hyundai Genesis Coupe will also boast its own race series within the Career mode of the game." IIRC that's the first DLC that included it's own racing series in the Career mode. This makes it worthwhile to play since you make money, otherwise they are just another three cars added to the game.

I really hope that Turn 10 also follows the same philosphy when they eventually release (and you know they will) more tracks as DLC. That was the problem with Road America in FM2, it wasn't part of the Career mode.

Have you deleted the game itself (not the save!) from the hard drive, then reinstalled? If that doesn't work, delete some other game and then remove and re-install FM3 to the hard drive. That should help it install in another location on the hard drive.

I haven't heard of anyone else having this issue, which would make me suspect your hard drive.

Ooo, I just tried the FOV at 90 degrees and I like it. A lot. It feels like really "arms out" racing, but not only do you see more left and right, but you also get to see more of the dash.

BTW, it might appear I am online in FM3 right now, but actually I'm letting the AI driver do a couple of endurance races for me. I just don't have the patience and concentration for racing more than an hour at a stretch. And I'm fine with splitting the money 50-50 with the guy  icon_biggrin

Interesting.  I guess I've found it pretty easy to just earn money by, you know, racing.

Ah, that's fine, sure. But for me racing would get a bit boring after a while. Need something to break it up.

Yes, on the multimonitor thing.  I've done it.  It looks good.

OK, I must be misunderstanding something. I turned on the multiscreens option, but I didn't see a FOV slider. Can you help? Nevermind  Roll Eyes. I figured out how to do it. I wasn't moving the bottom slider enough. 70 degrees looks good.

What the what?  Cool design, btw, but you can make a profit buying cars, slapping a design on them, and selling them back on the auction house?  Really?

Yup, if you are willing to take a bit of time. I'll watch the bids for a certain make and model and try to figure out what they are going for on an average. Then I go out and bid on a bunch of them, but only at much lower prices. Eventually one doesn't get bid up and I win it. Then I apply my design and put it up on auction. The key is setting the price. The minimum price should be just enough to make a profit. Then put in a buy-out price around the average. Sometimes people will grab the car at buyout just to avoid having to repeatedly bid. If you have an unusual design, you can bump up both prices. Also I usually only go for the 100cr two hour opening bidding time. More than that the fee goes way up in price and it seems like many folks are just waiting till the last minute anyway. Why pay for an eight hour auction when people only really start stepping up in the last ten minutes?
