1601  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Lingerie Football League? Seriously? (Mildly NSFW) on: January 21, 2010, 03:19:16 AM
So we're watching "CSI: New York" and it starts off with the last minute of a game of the Lingerie Football League. I'm sure it's some made for TV thing but no, it's real. I'm not sure what to think about this. Is this one of the signs of the approaching end of the world? Or just really a cheesey excuse to watch scantily clad women grabbing each other?

Update: OK, I did some googling. Since I don't watch the Super Bowl I didn't realize that it has been a staple of the half-time show for awhile. Still, a real league? Hmm...

I've been avoiding any previews as well. I want to be surprised... pleasantly of course.

An hour and a half in and so far, so good. Not too over the top. Actually rather well paced and structured.

Watching "24" and there are a lot of ME2 commercials. My wife thinks they are cheesy and I have to agree. I have assured her that the acting in the game can't be that bad.

I picked up the Zombie Island DLC today for Borderlands, something to do while waiting for Mass Effect 2. It's a great add-on. The new area is very stylish and doesn't look like any other area in the game. The new enemies also are unique; zombies move slow but there are lots of them! I'm finding some weapons sets that don't work well in other areas are perfect for this new map. It's a decent amount of content for 800 MSP.

I'm hoping that the poor reception of the Underdome DLC doesn't discourage Gearbox from putting out another DLC like Zombie Island.

I replied "3", but to be fair that's one fail on each of three units. Two were refurbs from Gamestop, one my original launch unit. MS did repair one Gamestop unit which was out of the GS warranty, the other GS refurb was still in their warranty so I just got a swapped out unit. The "new" one they gave me has a DVD drive that it putting scratches on my DVDs, so it's going back to GS again  icon_frown.

Just FYI, I notice that there is a new car pack available, the Autoweek 2010 Car Show pack. Also one of the cars is available as a freebie. Cars still need to be bought in-game of course. Since I only got to one of the cars of the last pack I think I'll pass for now.

Camping is 100% viable tactic, especially if odds are not in your favor.  If you're playing TDM, the odds aren't often in your favor because unorganized groups don't seem to coordinate too well.

Camping is a good counter-tactic to shotgunners and knifers in Hardcore. If in the next COD they wanted to balance things a bit in non-hardcore, incorporate being "stunned". If you are hit but not killed, you should be unable to fire/stab/launch for a second. You can continue to move if it would legitimately represent momentum.
1612  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Modern Warfare 2 Impressions [And official GT Review] on: December 26, 2009, 10:26:36 PM
Speaking of Hardcore, after our TDM session this afternoon I played some HC TDM. On Favela I found a spot right near the center of the map, on the building north of the ice cream shop, not on the roof but on the second level balcony facing east. I crouched and could see a little bit of the building north of the laundromat, but most importantly I could see the edges of the roof garden and the bar roofs. So I sat for a few seconds and here comes some guy jumping from one roof to the other. Plink! Did I mention I was shooting a silenced RPD? I must have gotten a half dozen guys before someone figured that they ought to look before they leap.

Yup, hardcore is the home of the campers. But thank goodness we have a lot of folks running around with dual shotguns and knifes to keep us campers from being bored.

And the secret of FMJs, as far as my experience, is to equip with it and then don't think about it. If you try to shoot through things on purpose you'll end up not getting the kills. I just completed the 40 FMJ kills on the RPD and the way I got through it was to just play like normal.

Post your K/D in MW2 and gloat (mine's 1.07, so it wouldn't be too hard).
1615  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Modern Warfare 2 Impressions [And official GT Review] on: December 23, 2009, 11:15:55 PM
That's it, I've had it. The supposed dual shotgun fix is broken if you have FMJ and all the rest are running arounds with knifes. I went and played Hardcore TDM and had a much better time. Sure, there are campers, but it's Hardcore, there are supposed to be campers. And that's what grenade launchers are for. No one running around like a psycho and the only dual shotgun guy got hammered so much he switched classes.

I don't care if I learn bad habits from playing Hardcore. If I stay with regular mode I'm going to learn a lot bad words from Calvin, or was it CSL?  icon_biggrin
1616  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Modern Warfare 2 Impressions [And official GT Review] on: December 23, 2009, 01:33:23 AM
I had a good time this afternoon. After flipping Prestige a few days ago I was miffed at myself, but now I'm finding it an interesting challenge. I've started focusing in on LMGs in all configurations, including with silencers and heartbeat monitors. I had a "golden moment" this afternoon when not one, not two, but *five* enemies came bounding around a corner to nail me at close range. I don't think I even let off the trigger, I just kept spraying and praying.

According to post on BluesNews, the patch goes live at 2am tomorrow (Wednesday).

Oh Hark, I think I just missed you when you came back online after unloading groceries, I had to get off to have dinner. If I don't get on tonight I'll be there tomorrow. I'm not stopping till I get my Claymores back!  nod
1617  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Forza 3 Discussion on: December 19, 2009, 06:55:56 AM
We had several folks together tonight and got in some racing. I did try my wheel for several races but I'm just not getting adjusted to it. I'll try it in some offline action.

I did get my F-S classes finally set up, although I'm not sure about a couple of them. And I finally have an A class drifter.

Turn 10 released one free gift car to everyone who downloaded the Holiday DLC and is a Gold XBL member. It's a winter themed painted and tuned version of an existing in-game 2010 Nissan GT-R SpecV. Also, VIP members (who bought the LCE) got another gift car, a super duper R3 1998 Porsche 911 GT1 Strassenversion. It's tuned and is probably the nicest handling R3 I've ever driven. It does NOT have a custom paint job because, as a Turn 10 guy explained in a forum post, this will allow you to resell it back at more than the usual 100 credits which is usually what you get for any gifted or reward cars. More like 650,000 credits nod. Nice.

First of all, if you see me playing Forza 3 online, I might be at the console or I might be letting my hired driver earn some bucks for me, so don't be surprised if I don't respond to a game invite. It's a long haul till I get that $15 million for the 1958 Ferrari Testa Rosa  icon_eek

I got the new DLC. My favorite car is the 2010 Mercedes SLR Stirling Moss. Being a roadster, there's no roof or A pillar to block the view, and even that pesky side mirror only lasts as long as the first concrete wall!

I had adjusted my cockpit FOV to 90 degrees a while back, but I see a lot of folks recommending 70, so I tried that for awhile, but 90 really rocks for me. It's a bit of a tunnel view, but the HUD info ends up on the roof liner anyway. And it's nice to have the coverage off to the sides.

1621  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Forza 3 Discussion on: December 08, 2009, 12:10:29 AM
So I've figured that my R2 Endurance Race (I haven't unlocked an R1 car yet) run by my hired driver earns me 80K in 68 minutes (all assists off, AI at Medium since the hired guy can't seem to win consistently at Hard). Is this the best way to make money when I can't race? I know that Forza 2 had a money glitch, but I guess there isn't one in FM3.

This weekend my refurbed Gamestop 360 went all RROD icon_frown. Only 6 months after I bought it, so it's still under their Product Replacement Plan. Brought it to my local Gamestop where they know me like they are Sam and Woody and I'm Norm. I got a replacement 360 and a $20 credit since the current refurbished arcade units are that much cheaper that when I bought it. And, just to make it really nice, I got a new Product Replacement Plan that starts on today's date, rather than when I bought the first one. So this could go on for the next few years I guess  icon_biggrin
1623  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Forza 3 Discussion on: December 07, 2009, 11:08:18 PM
I borrowed an MS Wheel for the 360 and gave it a try this afternoon. Hmm. A love/hate relationship. Yeah, more control range, but the wheel does seem to go all limp when I lose grip all of a sudden and it's harder to manage the resultant slide. I know I could probably get used to it, but it would take some time. The worst part is my current gaming setup. I use my computer monitor for my 360 playing as well. It's really nice, a 24-inch Gateway, but the desk it sits on is just not quite low enough. I can lower my seat, but then the angle to the pedals doesn't feel right. I'll have to play around with it some more, but the biggest problem is that I'll keep having to put it away since this is also my computer work desk.

By the way, what's with that stinky short cord between the wheel and the pedal unit? Needs more slack to be out of the way. I tried using an ordinary phone cord but it didn't work.

By the way, it may appear that I'm online racing in Forza 3 right now, but it's my dutiful hired driver that's cranking out laps at Le Mans for me. I can listen to him while I type. Man, he must be shifting every three seconds a lap.

Played online with Hark and Pug last night and had a good time, although Hark suffered a bit due to my occasional "buck fever". I hope he forgives me, it's just that it's a rare occurrence when I can past Hark on anything  icon_biggrin. Sadly in our last race, on the Fujimi Kaido Full Circuit, even though it was only a single lap my left thumb was completely numb by the end. I have had problems with this occasionally and often have to pause when playing offline. Can't really do that when playing an online race icon_frown.

After going back offline I did explore the issue of the "X" class. There are no default X (999+) plus cars and I really didn't want to spend a lot of my bucks upgrading one of my own cars. So I checked the auction house and yup there were a number of them, almost all the #62 De Ferran Acura upgraded from it's default R3 982 to over 999. Most were for sale in the six digits, but I did bid on one that was only $2,600, but it didn't say that cheap for long.

I also prepped a "C" class and an "S" class car for MP racing, just in case. I tried the "S" class in an offline series and I just can't control it without TCS and ABS, it's just too wild. Even with those assists I am miserably bad with the R1 Holden. Tuning does help somewhat, but it's still like driving on ice, the tiniest over-acceleration or braking is a disaster. Can't even imaging what driving an "X" class would be like. Maybe I will invest in a wheel.

BTW, the newest DLC comes out tomorrow. Supposedly it will also include 150K in credits, so that you can always buy one of the new cars to drive it. Nice idea.

I'm hoping that they soon offer the ultimate DLC, pay 400 or 800 MSP and get 100,000,000 credits. I might just be able to buy all the cars in the game with that!  icon_eek

I started off not sure that I would like this game, but I'm now about 14 hours in, just unlocked Forli and have completed only 36% of the game. I'm very impressed with the sandbox variety of things to do which don't get repetitive since I can switch between categories at will. I have done a Templar Lair and a Tomb and while I'm not a big fan of platform puzzles, these weren't too bad. I can see myself playing all the way till the end of the game.

After several hours of somewhat slow going, I'm really enjoying the game now that I've unlocked the Villa and a second city. There are several things always available to do so if, for instance, you get tired of finding treasures you can do a mainline mission or hunt glyphs or run down hookers (oops, wrong game!). The only mission I've had to give up on is the race mission in Florence, I simply cannot do it in the time allotted. I'm sure I could probably get there eventually, but since it's not mandatory for the story (apparently), I'm going to wait.

Yup, the story definitely starts off slower, but if you hang in there it does make it worth the wait. The game does a nice job of introducing each new feature via a mission. I've done ok in all the mission types so far except racing, which I suck at. Hopefully I never have to race to unlock some critical element of the story.

Also great are all the background conversations you can overhear in the street. Take some time and listen to the spiel of some of the speakers, it can be quite humorous at times.

Reinforces my instinct to switch to Hardcore like I did in the previous two games. Playing yesterday with a couple of the guys we face opponents who simply just ran all over the map, relying on faster draw tactics. Too many times I would start firing, probably getting the bad guy with a round or two, but then he would head shot or stab me. I know that going Hardcore pretty much makes each weapon the same as the next one, but the slower pace of Hardcore is worth it to me.
