321  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Civil liberties just took a big hit on: June 15, 2006, 06:41:56 PM
That's brilliant.  We'll really make a difference in crime with that paradigm.

After presenting information that a specific premises is being used to make meth to a judge and the judge finds that the evidence is specific enough to make a search of the premises, the cops should:

- Knock on the door and inform the occupants that they have arrived on the premises in order to execute a search for evidence of drug manufacture.
- Advise the occupants that they should summon their lawyers to protect their civil rights.
- Wait outside until said lawyer arrives.
- Once the occupants destroy said evidence and/or the lawyers arrive, entry should be granted.  If no lawyer is available, perhaps the search could be delayed until another time more convenient.

I'd hate for criminals to be inconvenienced by the exposure of their criminal activities.
322  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Civil liberties just took a big hit on: June 15, 2006, 04:27:52 PM
I guess I'm confused... as far as I know, the SCOTUS doesn't have the ability to tell cops what they can and can't do.  They can, however, determine whether, in a specific case, what the cops did was or wasn't a violation of someone's constitutional rights.   So, they're not saying that cops don't have to knock - but that in that specific instance, it didn't violate constitutional rights that they didn't.

323  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Hell's Kitchen Premier on: June 14, 2006, 04:31:43 PM
Yeah, at dinner with the girls he was very nice.  I love his stuff about how you can't buy standards.  Would you serve that?  "Yes."  Let me ask you again... would you really serve that??

Great stuff - I enjoyed it.
324  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / 9/11 conspiracy video on: May 31, 2006, 03:41:07 PM
True.  And the conductive properties of steel would require temperatures that the burning jet fuel could not possible have produced to either "soften" or "melt" the steel infrastructure of the towers.

On the issue of the building collapse, that's what the building's "free-fall" calculation was all about.  The arguement was that the building fell at almost a free-fall speed, inferring that it discounts the floor-by-floor pancaking theory, since each floor would slow the descent from the free-fall speed.

I certainly don't think I've seen enough evidence to suggest the government blew up the building, but I also haven't seen an explanation of the tower collapse that makes any scientific sense.
325  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / which 360 do you own? on: May 19, 2006, 04:59:43 PM

I don't know about more reliable, but reported that the Samsung drive was much quieter than the Hitachi.

Of course, soon they'll all be Lite-on drives.
326  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What's your favorite X360 game? on: May 18, 2006, 04:53:27 PM
Picking a favorite is tough because it seems to be whatever game I'm currently playing -
Oblivion is probably my favorite SP/play til 3 am game
NBA 2K6 for sports - I get my franchise in the playoffs and I can rattle off 10 games in a row
Fight Night for some on-line boxing late at night

NFS: Most Wanted and COD2 are favorites when I'm playing them.
327  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / PLAYOFF Hockey Talk on: April 25, 2006, 02:47:12 PM
The Avs win was freakin' amazing, though.  Stars are on the power play with 2 minutes left in the game and a goal lead.   That game's over.  Then an amazing short-handed goal fighting through the defense to force OT.  Wow.
328  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Thoughts on Flight 93 movie. [melancholy] on: April 17, 2006, 03:25:54 PM
Not only that, but certainly most of the movie is "dramatized" since no one knows for sure what happened during the hours on that flight.

If there's an event that doesn't need dramatization it's this one.  If I want to relive the feelings of that day, I'll put in one of the many excellent documentaries about what happened and do it.  I don't need a Hollywood writer to manipulate my emotions, thanks.
329  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Is anyone still playing Project Gotham 3? on: March 31, 2006, 05:24:02 PM
I love the hell out of this game... it's just with Fight Night, Oblivion and College Hoops, I ain't got enough time to 360 enough.

I'm in for some MP, too, though.
330  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [PSP] MLB - The Show on: March 01, 2006, 05:48:22 PM
Damn, no kidding.  I just broke out MLB last week to cure my spring training baseball jones.

Who's gonna take one for the team and get us some impressions.

As an aside, as I was playing MLB I was thinking about the notorious PSP load times.  MLB has virtually 0 load times once the game has started.  Why can't EA get it right with the NBA/Madden loads?  It's crazy.

333  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / XBox Live Update - I'm rantingly pissed! on: February 01, 2006, 04:07:35 PM
I did the update last night and tried to pay attention to what it did.  You're right - it will dump you in the middle of a game without warning.

I think for the most part, the 360 has spoiled us with warnings about leaving games.  If I try and go to the dashboard, I get the warning that I'm leaving the game and will lose any unsaved progress.

Yet, the update doesn't do that.  It asks if you want to updated.  If you say yes, it immediately closes your game, applies the update and re-boots the system.

So, make sure you save before you update.  Or just say no.
334  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / XBox Live Update - I'm rantingly pissed! on: January 30, 2006, 10:34:48 PM
Wait, so when you got d/c from Live, you got kicked from your Condemned game?  I was having 'net problems last night while playing Condemned, but just got the notification that I wasn't on live anymore.  It didn't actually kick me from the game.

Man, that sucks.  The save system on Condemned is touchy, though.  I had a couple of corrupt saves that set me back a couple hours.
335  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox Live 360 games, what are you playing? on: January 24, 2006, 03:29:53 PM
Hexic slaps Zuma with a wet trout.

And... Zuma's a Puzzle game?  Really?  What's the puzzle part?  Trying to figure out which string to shoot the ball into?  I've played Zuma, I just don't get the puzzle/strategy part of it.
336  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / LOST - 01/18/06 - FIRST HOLY CRAP of 2006! on: January 23, 2006, 09:07:34 PM
Or, since this is Lost, there could be an alternate explanation.

Sawyer, who has already been bulletholed at the hands of the Others, is already permeated by the fear that he may, indeed, be shot again during this confrontation.  Zeke only makes the gesture suggesting that someone could be shot, causing Sawyer's fears to manifest themselves with a gunshot and a graze wound opening on his neck.  Only Sawyer's new sense of invulnerability as projected onto him through his relationship with Kate saves him from death.

In the same manner, Jack manifests the ring of torches lighting up at Zeke's suggestion "Light them up!"  This is easily seen when checking frame captures of Jack's wedding as he and his wife are surrounded at the altar by the exact type of torches that appear to light in the jungle.  Note that his wife appears in the flashback during the episode as a harbinger of the jungle encounter.

Seems pretty clear to me.
337  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox Live 360 games, what are you playing? on: January 23, 2006, 08:59:44 PM
Hey Turtle,

I'm jament on Live.  There's a master thread stickied in the Multiplayer forums that lists everyone's 360 tags.

Currently, I'm playing PGR, Madden and Billiards on Live.  Maybe I'll run into you some time.
338  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / XB360 BC - What's Up? on: January 23, 2006, 04:09:43 PM
If you "recently bought" the 360 then the BC list was easily available, so you knew exactly which titles were BC and which weren't. If you chose to hang on to XBox games that weren't on the BC list there wouldn't be any reason to be surprised that you can't play them on the 360.

I don't get how you were "ripped off" then.  What did MS promise you that they didn't deliver?  Even the earliest reports indicated that MS would make "best selling titles" BC making it a hit-and-miss type of thing.

In the meantime, don't buy $60 360 games - get on Arcade.  There are some great, addictive games there.
339  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / NHL 2K6 - Some Thoughts on Gameplay on: January 20, 2006, 04:16:15 PM
What system are you guys playing this on?  The 360?  I've been thinking about grabbing the 360 version but keep hearing bad things about it.

Inquiring hockey dudes want to know!

Not to derail the thread, but wouldn't you love a college hockey game? I've been to a couple DU hockey games and they're great.  There's a game that would be a blast.

341  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Full Auto + Free Faceplate on: January 19, 2006, 10:19:28 PM
The thing that I really hated about the demo was the lack of any momentum-type of feeling.

I know it's an arcade racer, but the fact that I could drive through lightposts, roadside stands and head-on other vehicles without it even feeling like it was slowing my car down at all made it bland.  It never feels like you're driving a car or crashing into anything... just zoom through everything in a line right down the street.
342  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / LOST - 01/18/06 - FIRST HOLY CRAP of 2006! on: January 19, 2006, 04:34:49 PM
I think the moniker "Zeke" was just a hilbilly-type reference and not a reference to the hillbilly's real name.
343  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Ever wanted to love a game you absolutely hate? on: January 12, 2006, 05:34:39 PM
DOA4 - I wanted to learn it.  I wanted to get good at it.  I wanted to love it.

But playing it is like going to work - it's like a job.  My gaming time it too limited to spend my time working at a game.  Even on line, there's just nothing fun about it.  I worked hard at learning a character, all the moves, just to get uber-countered by the AI in SP and get beat by the one-move button mashers on line.  There's no reward and no reason to continue.

I still love the idea of the damn game.  I just hate the game.
344  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Howard Stern? on: January 10, 2006, 05:17:09 PM
The bit this morning with the Schwartzenegger impersonator was great - especially since it was another couple hours until they let George in on the fact that it wasn't really the governor.  He was going on and on about how revolutionary the show was that they could get the governor on and get him to admit he'd like a reach-around from George and such...

This is the first time I've ever listened to Stern's show and it's been fantastic.

That said, I can't believe people still listen to that free shit they blast over the airwaves as radio.  It's craptastic.  Give either XM or Sirius a listen and you'll never go back to that Clear Channel shit.
345  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PS3 Pre-Order on: January 08, 2006, 09:26:27 PM
Back to the question of pre-orders, I think there's a potential that after the XBox 360 debacle, there might actually be LESS preorders placed.

After all, who would pre-order again at an EB or Gamestop after paying for a 360 back in Sept/Oct and still not receiving their unit?  It's no secret that those who saved the cash then did some camping ended up with their units long before those who preordered.

348  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / My first take on the 360 games I received for Christmas on: December 30, 2005, 04:28:50 PM
I've been completely and overwhelmingly sucking at PGR.  I'm looking forward to finding some of you PGR'ers on-line and having you stomp me senseless.

I'm not usually into fighters, but DOA4 looks amazing.  Too many games, too little money.

The on-live portion of the 360 is freakin' amazing, though.  My wife (who is not normally a gamer) is even into it.  Unbelievably easy for anyone to jump on-line, play some arcade games, customize the system, look at photos.  Say what you want about MS' strategy, that portion of this console is kickin' ass.

350  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Full Auto Demo on the OXM on: December 30, 2005, 03:35:11 AM
I like the destruction, but it was so... easy.  I like arcady racers, but it didn't even seem like driving.  There was no drag or resistance at all to slamming through light poles, tables, other cars, etc.

I want to smash those things, sure, but I also want it to feel like I'm smashing those things.  I'm in the eh crowd.
351  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / GameFly? on: December 28, 2005, 03:33:06 PM
I'm thinking about using Gamefly for XBox 360 games specifically (once I find a 360 that it) and was wondering who had used them and;
-whether the service is worth the $22/month
-whether games came too scratched to use or if they were ok
-if the game turnaround time is pretty good.

Thanks for any feedback on the service.
352  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / XBox360 Tomorrow? Help Answer My Questions Tonight! on: December 27, 2005, 04:12:48 AM
Hey Calvin,

On the 20" Dell, it doesn't have component inputs, so you need to get the VGA cable to hook it up to the DSub input.  Then, yes, you will be seeing the image in HD resolution.  Here's a review on of the VGA cables where they talk about hooking it to the Dell:

Sound - easiest way is to hook up to a surround system that has a digital input, since the VGA cables have digital inputs.  Barring that, you could hook the RCA-type red/white cables to an sound card input and run it through your PC, or use a female RCA to 1/8" headphone plug to run into a computer sound system.

Games - haven't played 'em yet, so I can't say.

358  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Tonight's 'Lost' spoilers on: December 01, 2005, 05:26:31 PM
I think the timing of the computer coming to life for communication continues the trend of the characters being able to manifest things they're thinking about to become reality on the island.  This has happened several times -

Walt's reading the comic with the polar bear, then there's a polar bear in the jungle.

Kate's horse, seeing it in memories and then on the island.

The doctor's father.

Even the monsters/smoke things could be manifestations of someone's beliefs on what the "others" were.

So, Lock starts thinking about the computer being used to communicate and it starts communicating.  Michael's focused on talking to Walt.  He starts talking to Walt.  If everyone on the island could just focus on working together, who knows what could happen.

360  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / [parenting] MY SON WILL NOT GO TO SLEEP on: October 19, 2005, 04:45:29 PM
We did the same as th'Fool with our daughter (who is now 5) with great result.  She slept with us until she reached an independent stage around 2 where she wanted her own room and her own bed.  Since then, she sleeps in her own bed unless I'm gone (when she comes in to keep Mom company).  Never had a problem with her getting out of bed after being tucked in, crying at night (unless she's ill) or sleeping until morning.

Frankly, pediatricians and their "one size fits all" recommendations about parenting can kiss my ass.  Different kids have different needs.
