41  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Yu-Gi-Oh: Ultimate Masters World Championship Tour (GBA) on: June 07, 2006, 09:19:42 PM
Anyone play this?  Any good?  Tom Chick's review in Computer Games Magazine has me intrigued.

What does the "anti-plant" reference mean?
43  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Age of Empires: The Age of Kings for DS Screens on: February 20, 2006, 07:38:28 PM
I've been reading about various game stopping glitches dealing with frozen screens and corrupted save games on the Gamepot boards.  At least once person reported a "black screen of death" on two different copies of the game on 2 different systems.  I'm new to handheld gaming and thought the main advantage of consoles was avoiding shit like this.  Anyone experience this?  It has me worried since I ordered a copy online and it's too late to cancel.  I guess they can't patch a console game, can they?
44  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Age of Empires: The Age of Kings for DS Screens on: February 18, 2006, 04:03:52 AM
I read that on some skirmish maps you start too close to the AI (and you always start at the same spot) and can kill its worker in a few turns and then game over.  Anyone confirm?
45  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Lets talk about AI on: February 13, 2006, 06:35:55 PM
I talked with a programmer on a message board and he said it was easier to make a good AI for a turn based game than a real time game, which surprised me.  I thought the opposite was true.  It was on a Master of Magic 2 forum where I proposed the main reason MoM 2 wasn't made yet was because the AI programming would be very difficult.
46  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What's your GOAT of the year so far - 2005 PC edition on: November 28, 2005, 05:11:26 PM
Half Life 2 for me.  I know it was released last year but I just need to vent.  I really hate the Half Life school of level design.  I hate jumping puzzles and byzantine, maze-like levels.  Turning valves and jumping on crates really gets old.  I also really dislike the boring kind of enemies you fight.  I fell for the hype with the original Half Life and got burned even more with Half Life 2.  I agree the graphics and physics are good but I really hate the gameplay.  I don't understand why the Half Life games received such acclaim.  Examples of shooters I really liked are No One Lives Forever (and the sequel), Deus Ex, and System Shock 2.
47  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / IGN Civ IV review on: October 24, 2005, 08:34:53 PM
I read the above and it sounds awesome, especially the improved AI and diplomacy.  While I always admired the Civ games, I could never get addicted to them because of the degree of micromanagement required to stay competitive.  I'm hoping Civ4 will change that for me.
48  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / IGN Civ IV review on: October 22, 2005, 01:55:25 AM
Good review. I was disappointed to read that the old problem of knights taking out helos, spears taking out tanks, etc., is still present.

Too bad.  I was really looking forward to this one
50  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Unable to reset Advance Wars campaign on: July 10, 2005, 04:31:20 PM
After countless tries I got it to work.  You have to press L+Right D Pad+Select right after you press the Gameboy Advance startup icon.  I kept trying it while the game was running and also while turning the unit on.  I wish the instructions would have been more specific as it would've saved me a lot of time and frustration.

I tried all that and still no luck
52  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Unable to reset Advance Wars campaign on: July 10, 2005, 04:36:36 AM
I bought a used copy of Advance Wars and am unable to reset the game using A+B+Start+Select as written in the manual.  I also tried L+Right D Pad+Select to no avail.  I'm using a DS.  Anyone know what could be wrong?

Looks like a lot of those games are hard to find.

All of them (except the first Advance Wars) are in stock at  They have Final Fantasy Tactics Advance in stock and I've had a hard time finding it elsewhere.  I've bought from them before and they have been very reliable.

Thanks for that link!

By the way, do I need to buy anything extra for the DS?  Any hidden costs?  I read something about "memory cards" but I don't know if I need those.  How do you save games?

In looking at the DS, I'm seeing an Electric Blue variety.  Is the only difference between this and the regular DS the color?
56  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PC gamer thinking of buying a handheld on: July 04, 2005, 12:37:07 AM
I feel I may be missing out on some gaming goodness if I don't try a handheld.  I've been PC gaming forever, and haven't tried a console for umpteen years.  So I'm curious and would like to try one.

I'm not interested in sports games at all.  I like RTS, turn-based strategy and RPGs the most.  I also enjoy FPS and action RPGs from time to time.  It appears the Nintendo DS has the most available games right now, correct?  What are the "must have" games for it?
57  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PC gamer thinking of buying a handheld on: July 04, 2005, 12:04:49 AM
I've been solely a PC gamer (mainly like RPGs and strategy games) and have recently thought of buying a handheld game device.  The last time I played one of these things was various sports games (Calico?) when I was a kid and all it was was flashing lights on a square grid.  I see they've come a long way since then  smile   What game device should I buy and can you recommend some games I might like?
58  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Rifts: Promise of Power coming to N-Gage on: July 03, 2005, 03:30:34 AM
I never had a desire to play anything but PC games, until I read about Rifts for the N-Gage.  It's based on the interesting pnp Rifts setting and is touting up to 80 hours of game play with a real time world, main story line, many side quests, and turn based combat!  I'm thinking of buying an N-Gage just for this game if it gets good reviews.

Did you play the new demo?  It's supposed to me much better than the first.
61  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Flagship Studios finally announces project...Hellgate:London on: April 27, 2005, 08:25:47 PM
I read the preview in PC Gamer and this game looks awesome.  Everything is randomized so no two games play the same and everything is in 3D.  It's like Diablo 2 except with more options and better graphics.  I can't wait for this game!

Is that good for my system?
63  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dom2 PBEM 3 Player, 5 Day Forced Hosting Game Starting on: March 21, 2005, 11:31:18 PM
I'm hosting a PBEM 3 player, 5 day forced hosting game (called Console) on the Reemergence of Urgaia map. Make sure you can play a turn at least every 5 days before you join. Independent strength 6, info on other nations disabled, and renaming allowed. Everything else is default. This is my first attempt at hosting a game (of any kind) so bear with me. Also, I'm not a very good player, so keep that in mind before you decide to join. I will play as the third nation after the other two have been picked. Mention the name of the game (Console) when you send the pretender. Send pretenders to singleman5[AT]hotmail[DOT]com. Thanks!

Vampire Bloodlines
2 campaigns in Strategic Command
I continue to play Dominions 2 and wish I could find more PBEM games
One pirate to completion in Pirates! who wound up as a meager butler    I need to lower the difficulty and try again.

Kind of sad when I bought about 15 games last year.  I have a huge stack of unplayed games from previous years as well.

Same as mine, although the guys from Gamespot are clearly on some sort of drugs...

I think Ocampo gives wacky scores.  This is the same guy who gave Dominions 2 a 6.2
66  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Half Life 2 - the reviews are in on: November 15, 2004, 09:42:12 PM
I'm disappointed Ocampo said the game wasn't groundbreaking. Of course, after he gave Dominions 2 a 6.2 I really don't trust his reviews.

68  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Ouch -- Axis and Allies gets a 6.0 at Gamespot. on: November 04, 2004, 12:39:29 AM
Very surprising and disappointing given how good the AI is in the Kohan games.  I'm more interested in the WW2 turn based mode but it sounds like it's the weakest portion of the game, which the IGN review also indicates.  I was really looking forward to A&A.  What a letdown  :-(

I hope it at least comes with a list of hot keys.  Otherwise, I won't have a clue how to play other than maybe WASD.
