It looks like in FF it runs java and IE it runs activex, so there's the root of the issue. Something is probably wrong with your java runtimes so I would reinstall java, maybe reinstall FF and then java. Something else, I've found sites that don't work in FF3 but work fine in FF2...

On a side note, wasn't that whole vista system rank thing supposed to tell us what works and what doesn't? I remember playing with that a while back with my old pc and it was at 5.9 and then I built my new pc and it's also 5.9. I never looked into what it takes to hit 6 and up but I used to think I had a beefy system until that...

What are the criteria for GOTY?

I guess if style and innovation are the determining factors, World of Goo is definitely tops.

For me it would boil down to overall fun. WoG was fun but after a two hour playthrough and finishing it, I was done. I have no desire to go back and do the same things again resulting in the same outcome. Whereas I've put over 100 hours into FO3 and have finished it twice working on the 3rd now. I'm doing the same quests, sure, but the outcome varies. I'm not saying FO3 should be GOTY, I'm just saying we need to qualify the criteria and perhaps there needs to be categories for GOTY?

I think Visio and walmart are part of the problem. People see 1080p and see it on a 42" Visio for $300 and think it's the same as a 42" Kuro. They need the perspective of Yugo vs. Ferrari and that's not in their mindset.

I guarantee you, anyone that sees BR on my 60" Kuro is blown away. I don't even need to put it next to a dvd.

Digital will take off because the quality sucks but so does that Visio, it just won't be overnight. There will still be enough of us that know quality to sustain BR. Digital will take a very very long time, if ever, to catch up to BR quality.

There are a couple of different solutions but this one is the most common (and also the one I use):

http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-3-Blu-Wave-Remote/dp/B000R5H7KE

This is the one I use. Logitech has it in their database (I have the One). It does not do power but I've always figured since I have to stick the disk in to watch it anyway, that turns it on. Then after I eject the disk to put it away, I turn it off. For playing games, the controller can do power on and off so that's not an issue.

They say the $100 unit is snappier though, this nyko one takes half a second sometimes to register button hits. It better be for an extra $85.

That's because JRPG's are so focused on using hours of cutscenes. Overall game quality doesn't show yet between Blu-Ray vs a regular DVD. Games Like GTA IV, Fallout 3, Gears 2 etc are some of the best looking titles out there(and with huge worlds to explore), yet do it just fine on a regular DVD. Not saying it will never happen but the pro Sony Devs who say they couldn't do a AAA game without Blu-Ray are simply spouting PR.

Uhm, what? You've lost me. We're talking about the difference between FF13 on the PS3 vs 360. I'm using Lost Odyssey as an JRPG as an example. It couldn't fit onto one dvd, it took 4. I'm expecting a better game from Square so it stands to reason that it will be at least 4 dvds on the 360 and since it started as a PS3 game, they knew they had blu-ray as a storage medium, roughly 6 times the data capacity. Therefore, to fit it onto one dvd, the compression levels on the cutscenes would need to be massive and I don't think it's possible. The other alternative is downgrading the quality and compressing it. I don't see why they would downgrade the quality on the PS3 as well.

I've never played Gears2 (or one for that matter) and I've only played FO3 on the PC but I think that both FO3 and GTA4 are doing game engine rendering of cutscenes and not separate video like FF and LO do, which is where the storage space required comes into play.

My prediction is that they make no sacrifices, have full video cutscenes as always, and the game comes out on 5-10 dvds and perhaps even 2 BRs.

Now now, no need to go to that length.  They'll probably compress the game quite a bit on the disc, and the 360's DVD drive has a very fast spin and read rate, which is why it can keep up, but also why it's so noisy.

Then it's not going to be the same quality. There's no debating DVD = ~8gb while Blu = ~50gb. Remember, Lost Odyssey was 4 dvds and not near the production quality of a Square game.

FF13 isn't exclusive.

Ok but I'm not swapping 10 disks, buying the HDDVD drive, or a larger HD to install it to. For the PS3, all I need is the game itself.

I own all three systems and the Wii is the only one with exclusives I really care about. FF13 may change that but that's a whole different discussion. Lost Odyssey was ok but come on, 4 disks?! At least it could have fit on one BD disk. However, my PS3 gets used almost daily. We can absolutely see the difference between dvd and Blu and our TV's are only 720p. We don't buy that many Blu but we rent them a lot and thanks to this being an area of walmarters, we pretty much have free reign at Blockbuster.

Which is really the point, isn't it? Walmarters are not the type that know what HD means, they buy the crappiest TVs, and wonder why everything looks like ass. Most probably don't know what Blu-ray is. They can't even find a dentist... <shiver>.

Downloads are not going to take off with this crowd. They have enough trouble with physical media. We bought one of the blockbuster boxes and it's not very good. Twelve o'clock flashers are not going to be able to do this.

I only skimmed this thread but a lot of people forget that Blu also includes the most incredible audio reproduction, the PS3 doesn't have near the failure rate or near the noise, and is easier to upgrade.

Everyone seems to forget these days that the only reason Achievements were even invented is Microsoft had this proposed plan where you were rewarded for how well you did in games at the Microsoft Store. You could trade in your achievement points for other games, gears, software, crap like that. Of course, none of this ever happened, but the intention was never e-peen.  icon_lol

Ha, right. M$ give away free stuff? Sorry but that sounds far fetched. I'm not saying it's not true, just that I don't believe M$ would ever intend on following through.

Exactly.
Quote
Also, there is something under the PS3 Settings/System Settings called Notification Messages which you can set to Display or Do Not Display.  Even though it doesn't list trophies specifically, this sounds like the exact thing that the 360 has.

Hmm, I'll look at that but I'd have to find another game that has them to see if it works.

Achievements have nothing to do with Xbox Live.  However, I'm pretty sure you can turn off all notifications somewhere in the 360 settings.

Ah ok, I thought the whole point of achievements/trophies was to stroke you're ego and/or show off your epeen, so I assumed being networked was the whole point. I'm quite sure the 360 gives the option to turn them off so Sony better follow suit or I'm done buying games for it.

Poor PS3 just can't win.  People complained when there were no trophies and now it has trophies and people still complain.  You're playing a game where you can't die-how immersive is that?

How difficult would it be to add a switch to turn trophies off, I sure as hell never asked for them. The 360 turns them off doesn't it? I don't recall ever being annoyed by them anyway. It probably doesn't show them because I don't keep the consoles plugged into the network so how would that even work?

I know people blast the can't die part but that's perspective. Truly the only way to go full bore on that would be: If you die. Game over. The end. Throw the disk in the trash. You can never play again.

There has to be some balance between fun, immersion, risk, and reward.

I couldn't play POP for more than 10 minutes as the constant "OMG! CoNgRaTs! U PRSSD the STRT button!!!" popups completely ruined the immersion factor, which is the whole point I play games. I'm starting to regret the PS3.

I've been really looking forward to this but I can't find out if the PS3 version has those damn trophies. Anyone know? I will never buy another game with trophies that can't be turned off. Blockbuster isn't due to get this for some time so I can't just rent it....

Of the three, I play the wii the most. if I'm going to stare at crappy res games, might as well be fun to control (Force Unleashed is a perfect example).

The wii is also the big party console with sports and mario kart, at least around here.

She wants to put audio files on a cd or create an audio cd? For an audio CD, as others have said, iTunes is the answer. If she wants to put files of any sort on a disk, just create a burn folder (instead of a regular folder) put what you want in there and click on the burn button.

You absolutely can...

With the same hardware, and the same software, included tech support, warranty and licensed operating system, and factoring in your build fee?  I'd be mighty impressed if you can pull that off with parts from newegg.

That's where you basically bitched about originality.  So you complain about their lack of imagination but want them to name the game something obvious about what type of game it is?

Ahh, see you can have imagination without being original. Creating a game where you're a guy in a leather jacket driving a smart car that talks and hunting down criminals is cool and you can name it Knight Rider, that's imagining but far from original (sounds like GTA). Now if you name it the same but it's a game about medieval jousting, we have a problem since (to my knowledge) that would be very original but not imaginitive.

Apparently ignorant gamers like yourself.  It's a prequel set in the Halo universe, but it's a different kind of game.  Ever hear of a prequel?  Did you think that Batman Begins was going to be the follow up to Batman and Robin?

No, but it's not called Halo Begins is it? It's not even an FPS game. Batman Begins was still an action movie about Batman, not a romance about Riddler.

You are bitching about originality and most the examples you give are sequels to other games?  Is it really original to put a number after a game?

Where was I bitching about originality. I was commenting that it's not a shock that ensamble is closing. Regardless, there are plenty of examples that are not sequals and the first editions generally ring true. From the name Halo, I didn't give it a second look as halo is generally a religious term. It was at least a year after its release that I ran into it (since it was the PC version as I hate my 360). Fable intrigued me as I thought it was going to be a storytelling game, and it was. Rock Band sounds like a game about a rock band. Fallout sounds like nuclear fallout, which it is. Warhammer online, to my knowledge, is not a sequal. Grid, I never looked at it as I thought it would be a tetris puzzle game until I ran into it on gametap or something, what does a grid have to do with racing? Dirt on the other hand, sounds like a racing game. Puzzle Fighter, sounds like a fighting game with puzzle pieces? Crackdown, I thought it was about being a drug dealer.[/quote]

FWIW I buy dozens of 20-24 " LCD's a year at work. A few months ago we tried switching from LG to Samsung and the first three 24" samsungs were all DOA (yellow lines) and one was from a completely different VAR with non sequential serials. After that we canceled all other samsungs and switched to NEC. We've had great luck with both LG and NEC. We only switched away from LG because there was a several month gap when no one we work with could supply 24's and didn't know if they would come back.

Edit to add: I own a 50" Samsung plasma at home and I love it, but I'll never buy another LCD from them.
