I watched the whole thing on youtube. It's incredibly short, or at least feels that way compared to AA.

You crazy.

Is that going against the boycott? It does feel a little crooked but at least I'm not giving money to Rocksteady.

I must have missed the reason why you are boycotting them.  Is it because they did this Catwoman DLC thing to supposedly combat used games sales but then apparently struck a deal with Gamestop to include codes with used copies?  Or was it something else?

That's pretty shifty too but I was more referring to delaying the PC version but not the consoles, and not only selling more copies of the console versions for practically double the price of the PC version, but then double dipping because people are too impatient to wait but want the best version. This level of greed belongs in a special place in hell with the child molesters.

You have proof that this is why they delayed the PC version how exactly?

Maybe now you guys will believe me that they are just money grubbing. Tonight at target, I found copies of arkham city sitting on the shelf. I took a chance and bought it. It appears to be the real thing as far as I can tell. AVG doesn't claim it's a virus, it comes on 2 dvds, and took an hour to install including swapping back to disk 1 for the final part.

So here it is, proof that rocksteady has been lying to us from the beginning. They had time to ship it to mexico, press it to disks, and box it up for retail but claim it's not done yet. Complete bullshit.

It's time locked and does an internet check so changing the date on my local machine didn't work.

At no point have I ever heard anyone say that Rick was a superhero.  He's ALWAYS been touted as a normal guy thrust into abnormal circumstances.  You want comic book levels of heroism when that's not what this show (or the actual comic book) has ever been about.

Quote
It's not just about plot holes. Yes, people are stupid and they do stupid things. If this were Homer, I'd be fine with that, expecting him to be a moron. But the perception that people gave me regarding the main character (I forgot his name) was that he wasn't stupid and could survive this ordeal. It's more like he's a bumbling buffoon just getting lucky. He was lucky to survive the coma without help for weeks on end. He was lucky not to walk into a zombie in the stairwell when he lit a match. He was lucky that he didn't walk outside into a horde. How was it that the horde wasn't feeding on all those bodies? He was lucky the guy and his kid didn't just whack him. He was lucky to find a horse that hadn't been eaten and lucky that horse had managed to find enough food on his own to survive for X amount of time. He was lucky the tanks trapdoor was open. He was lucky not to get caught by the ricochet.

He's also lucky that aliens haven't abducted him, he's lucky his anus is intact because of that, he's lucky that midget sorcerers weren't waiting in that stairwell, etc., etc., etc., ad nauseum.

Again, the only thing in that list that requires a bit of effort to get past is the coma.  The other stuff is just you wanting something to happen and then getting disappointed when it doesn't.  If you had written the show, it would be far less entertaining, to be honest.  Everyone would react like seasoned war veterans; every bad circumstance that could arise, would; and everyone they met would try to kill them.

Name one show or book you like and I'm sure, given enough time to research it, we could rattle off a similar list of equal length showing how the main character got lucky.  Hell, Jesus is like Homer Simpson in the bible if you look at it the way you do this show.

Now it feels like you're not even reading my side of the conversation. I'm pretty positive I never called him a superhero. I did think the whole point is that he's a normal hero. You're just being silly now with the aliens, that's not in the context of this story, my luck remarks are all logical in this context. I just realized who he reminds me of, Mr. Bean. I don't expect Chuck Norris either but a cop should have minimal training, that's a logical expectation.

I've never read the bible so I can't comment.

Let's talk Walter from Breaking Bad, he's been equally lucky except where the chemistry is concerned. He's a chemistry teacher, but he doesn't go all Mr. Bean when cooking meth. See the correlation? I expect a cop, even a small town cop, to be good at being a cop.

PS3 version - one platform only

I don't know about the ps3 version but the xbox version has numerous bugs, you would think they'd fix them. It's not like they didn't have time.

are they show stopping bugs?  if so, I haven't heard about them.  most games are patched for bugs after release if they don't make the game unplayable.  the pc bugs may be show stoppers.

System freezes, text overwriting text by the hint system, the hint system (for moves like press BBA for something) doesn't stop when you turn off hints in the options, and loss of button function and movement stick but camera control sticks still work are the ones I've heard about.

They haven't denied it. If it's for bug fixing, then why wouldn't they delay the consoles to fix their bugs too? In fact, wouldn't the opposite be easier? It's far easier to patch the PC version than the console version.

They also haven't denied my theory that they delayed the PC version because God told them to, doesn't make it true.

But why leave the bugs in the xbox version?

Just checked the forums, it's not just the xbox version, it's both.

There's lots of fiction I like and I'm sure it's all full of plot holes.

Why do they get a pass then?

It has to do with suspension of disbelief and the perception of lazy writing. There are a thousand ways to open this story and many of them would not have involved such blatant plot holes. Or they could have altered just a couple of things but it feels like they just said "F it, who cares".

But numerous plot holes outside the opening 20 minutes are perfectly acceptable in a piece of fiction?

p.s. and again, the only real plothole you pointed out (and which others have also noted in the past) was the coma scene.  the other stuff you mentioned was simply folks not reacting in a way you expected...which, quite like real life, happens every single day.

Plot holes anytime are acceptable if it doesn't break the story. The first part of any work of fiction is critical. It took 5 or 6 tries before I could get past the idiocy that was him leaving the hospital because it felt painful to watch.

It's not just about plot holes. Yes, people are stupid and they do stupid things. If this were Homer, I'd be fine with that, expecting him to be a moron. No, you went in with UNREALISTIC expectations.  Mostly, you seem to have a set reaction you expect from every character and if those expectations aren't met, you give up on the show.  The problem lies more with you than the source, imho.

I more gave up on it because of the whole hospital part. I can ignore the main character being a complete moron. The two together just shows that the writing/directing/something is crap.

Sigh....

Name one piece of fiction you like and I'm 100 percent we'll be able to come up with a laundry list of plot holes.  I love Breaking Bad and I honestly believe it deserves every one of the numerous awards its won.  That you expect perfection from your entertainment sources is only hurting you in the end.

p.s. a lot of your gripes seem based around behavior you expect out of your characters.  that's even more ridiculous.  people react to things in different ways...even trained professionals make mistakes during things that happen to them every day.

I agree that BB does deserve every award it's won.

I don't expect perfection, I simply want to be engrossed and entertained, that's the whole point. If you break me out of my suspension of disbelief because your plot holes are so hysterical, then I'm not entertained.

Perhaps I went in with my expectations too high because I read so many people saying this was so great.

There's lots of fiction I like and I'm sure it's all full of plot holes. That's one reason I can't author anything, it would take 100 years to fix even a 10,000 word story.

I can't think of another acclaimed work of fiction with so many plot holes in the first 20 minutes.

Breaking Bad for instance. I'd need to rewatch the pilot but nothing comes to mind.

Really?   icon_eek  A former school teacher on a school teacher's salary who develops cancer, has to quit his job, then suddenly has enough money to buy a business doesn't get the attention of the IRS at any point doesn't alert your finely tuned sense of plot holishness?  That's only one...and it doesn't occur in the first 20 minutes, but it's a pretty freakin' big one that should have had you giggling insanely throughout the last season given the level of perfection you apparently require.

EVERY show has plot holes when you take a microscope to it.  The only valid one you expressed in your list of gripes was the coma thing.

I'm still in season 2. I didn't know he bought a business but you're right, that is pretty glaring, no reason to continue watching it if they are going to pull that crap.

Talk about plot holes, the dead can't come back to life!  It's friggin' impossible!  Scientifically speaking, once a person dies they CANNOT reanimate and then start chasing and eating the living!

...and don't get me started on Star Wars!

I'm talking about things like: IVs don't last more than a day and leaving a dry IV in, can kill you. Where did he get nourishment for however long he was out and it was obviously a while from the dried out flowers and wreck of civilization. Where was the catheter? They don't allow patients unconscious to wear clothes beyond the gown but he had shorts on. How did the zombies, whom were obviously inside since we're shown that mostly eaten fresh corpse, not find him? That was very 28 days later and I expected better based on the ravings this was getting. What about the shootout that lead to him being hospitalized? Those cops were the WORST marksmen and then after the first two perps are down, they all relax? That's not how real police work is done. Secure the entire scene, search everywhere, detain/cover/cuff the perps that are down until death is irrefutably confirmed.

So then he's in a tank and he shoots UP through the head?! This is presumably his own revolver, so he should know the caliber and consequences of a shot from it, after all, he did just shoot some other cop through the head. Did he have his eyes closed?! I was too busy laughing so I may have missed that.  Anyway, I would expect the fact that tanks are mostly bullet proof, to at least small caliber fire, to be common knowledge so firing a weapon in such a way, is just plain stupid and if he weren't impossible to kill, he'd surely be tagged by the ricochet. The proper way, if you had to use the gun, is to fire downward through the top of the head so that the bullet also goes through the body and out the back/opposite side and even if it makes it through, is trapped between the body and wall of the tank.

So is this supposed to be some alternate reality world where zombie movies never happened?

A gecko "rescues" another from a snake.

I put "rescues" in quotes since we really don't know what's going on.

What kind of sick twisted people have A) pets that naturally want to hunt and kill each other (cats and dogs can live in peace, aka mass hysteria), B) let them get physically close enough to do so, and C) when it happens, GRAB THE CAMERA instead of SAVE the one about to be eaten?!

A quick summary for you:

* Focus of the show is on people with zombie apocalypse as the setting
* Most agree that the first episode kicked ass
* The followup episodes, while containing some plot holes, were still very good.  Not as good as the first, but they still far outshine most anything else airing.

I'd recommend watching it before Halloween 2011 swings around since that's when season 2 begins.

After several attempts to get through the pilot I finally made it tonight. Does it really not get better? And if the next episodes have MORE plot holes, how is there even a story? This one had so many in the first 20 minutes that we thought it was a comedy. And how in the world does this guy survive? He's a complete moron. I don't know if I can suffer through another 90 minutes but I'll try.

Erm.

I rarely browse on the weekends.

I didn't get it either until the provided link. Not my kind of music but then again I haven't listened to music in years, I don't subscribe to cable/sat TV, and I never have the sound on if my wife isn't watching it for fear I wouldn't be able to hear her yell for help.

I do pride myself on not being saturated by "mainstream society" and thus not knowing that song.

Quite like Catwoman, she is a fast little kitty

Press RB to grapnel, once you leave the ground, press A and release, immediately press A and hold until you are launched in the air. This is all dependent on if your grapnel is long enough.

I got the rest of the virtual training done last night and have a few tips for the later ones.

if you have to dive then swoop back up to get the rest, take Dr. Drew's advice and pull out sooner than you think you should.  ol' bats has a tendency to fall a tad further after you spread your wings.  I got the timing down pretty well with the one in the amusement park section and it was valid for all of the tests that use that mechanic.  there's one where you need to dive just enough to clear the ceiling and then pull a 90 degree turn.  that's easier than you think but don't oversteer or you'll hit the wall.

for the tricky one where you have to loop back, noone said you have to do a barrel roll.  as long as you don't land you can always circle back.  biggest trick to that one is knowing how far you have to glide back after the 180 to hit the last waypoint.

as for some of the riddler trophies where the marks are far apart, batarangs are not the only way you can trigger them.  the first one you will likely run into while going to rescue catwoman is a great example.

regarding the timing related trophies where the cage locks back up after the timer expires, you have another way to retrieve them with one of your gadgets.  also, don't forget that your quick strike with the batarangs are very useful in this situation.

comparing AA to AC.  I love both for different reasons.  AA was a carefully designed environment with an awesome advancement system and the metroid-vania lure to bring you back through old sections.

AC is an awesome sandbox expansion that trades in the tightly crafted experience for player freedom and choice.  admittedly, open world games are not for everyone, despite the quality.  yes, you can skip the fluff and go from main mission to main mission, but if you are not fond of exploring for the sake of exploration and wholly optional content, AC may not be the game you really want.

Good flight tips, those are going to come in handy for people when they get to the plot point of...

Spoiler for Hiden:
completing Ra's challenge.

Still not sure why they changed the Penguins voice to have an accent. After years of it being fairly similiar (I still hear Burgess Meredith's take on it when i read the comics) the change is pretty jarring.

Just play without sound. It's overrated anyway.

It looks a LOT worse on 360.  It's not really the type of game that will suffer from that though.  I REALLY wish they would hurry up and get a xbox out that will run things at 1920x1080. ARG!

Um, I can run games in 1080p on my 360, as long as the game supports it.  Which a lot of the newer releases do (not sure about this game, though).

you are completely confused between running a game at 1080p, and running a game natively in 1080p.  I can't think of any games on the 360 that actually render at 1080p.  There are tons of games (pretty much all in the last few years) that will upscale to 1080p though.  Sadly in order to get the 1080p logo on the box they just need to upscale.  Something rendered at half that res and bumped up will look like crap compared to something rendered at 1080p, and that's what is happening.  Look at any game side to side on PC and you'll see the difference.  You might be surprised to find out that even the dashboard/guide isn't actually rendered at 1080p and will look slightly fuzzy on a large screen.  The dash I believe is 720p and then upscaled to 1080p.

some quick examples

COD:MW2 actually renders at 1024 x 600, try playing a computer game on your PC at that res, it isn't pretty.

Halo 3 was at 1152640

You're lucky to get so many games rendered at 720p

Here's a massive list of known resolutions for rendering on games.  The sad thing is that the xbox hardware just can't handle a game actually rendering at 1080p, let alone at 1080p with any sort of AA.

Pete, the head of Arkham is now the mayor of Gotham and it's three months and change later. Aside from that and multiple references to the overall plot of the original (Titan drug), you're good to go picking this up.

I'm slowly getting back into the cobat routine and increasing my skills. It's absolutely vital to up your melee defense right from the start so you can last longer. Bullets can wait, but melee is important. I've also upped the critical hits skills and now I'm just wailing on the criminals. Overall, I'm enjoying the heck out of it.

But...

The go anywhere aspect is, surprisingly, not well suited to this story. Part of the greatness of Arkham Asylum was the go anywhere aspect because it was confined to a limited space. Blow that up to the size of this game and you lose one of AA's greatest strengths - focus. You always knew where you were going and what you had to do. Beating criminals to a pulp while en route to your goals was icing on the cake. But in AC, if you want to chase down Zasz you can do that. Oh look, Riddler prize! Hey, what's that over there? WHEEEEE!!! It's a case of focus versus a case of ADD. Again, I'm really liking AC but the mass expansion is, ironically, not working in its favor.

Also, a guy online calling himself Film Crit Hulk (great in character film writer) did a scathing critique of the gross sexism in the game. I have to agree with him and I guess the other game journos are so numbed to that aspect of gaming that they just ignored it. But Hulk made several good points, namely that this was nowhere to be found in AA but it's everywhere in AC. What's the point?

Regardless, I'm enjoying the game for the most part but not grabbing me quite the way AA did.

Sorry, I've got to disagree with you as well, on numerous points. You should never need melee defense. Channel the goddamn batman better. Unless you're being snuck up on during a cutscene and conked on the head, or tied to a chair and slapped in a cutscene, or walked right up to and smacked during a cutscene, no one touches the goddamn bat. Counter better.

Holy sequel Batman! Can't believe how fantastic this game is. Wonder if Rocksteady will just continue with Batman (fine by me) or take on another super hero (I vote for Daredevil)

Isn't Daredevil marvel? Seems like they would probably stick with DC.

I'm getting it. It's available now fyi smile They released 12 hours early

I've about farking had it with steam. This is bullsh*t and they've been pulling this crap a lot lately. How in the hell are we the consumers supposed to plan anything? You know what happens if I show up 12 hours early to a meeting at work? I get farking fired.

This is one of the first times I've seen someone complain about an early release. Geez, game developers just can't get a break - release early or late and you encounter anger.

I realize people enjoy having a schedule, but the game will still be available 12 hours later, when you planned to play it originally - so what is the problem?

Now that I've got that out of the way... why boycott Batman? Is there something up with that release? I've completely ignored the Batman news, given that I only recently acquired a PC able to play them.

I was just in a bad mood and realizing after I got to work that I could have kicked off the download before I left if I had known they released it early just added to that.

We are boycotting batman: arkham city because they got greedy and decided to delay the PC version and refuse to give a real reason. Had they come up with a believable excuse other than "oh it's hard, /whine", it may have been fine. We're pretty certain that since the PC version is nearly half price ($36 vs $60) of the consoles, that greed is driving them. I always speak to companies with my wallet and hey, it worked on netflix.

You work AND live in a weird place slywink

Yeah.

Sorry I'm in a really foul mood. It's been a really long day and there's still 9 hours to go at work before I can get home and I was really looking forward to this since I'm boycotting batman so it just set me off that they released it early and didn't do a pre-load.

I doubt you'd be fired for showing up 12 hours early, probably just stared at and then talked about a lot.  12 hours LATE on the other hand would probably get you fired.

To a client, fired.

I've been through this. I get my work done, usually prior to the deadline, and I always update my boss. Occasionally I've suggested we could just do something early (release update, roll out hardware, blah blah blah) and the response is always "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU THINKING?! We have an established timeline, DO NOT deviate. Start working on something else if you're bored."

Funny.

That does look really funny. I've got to get a pc with sound one of these days. Too bad the movie itself wasn't worth watching.

Wow.  You amaze me with your distance from what works in pop culture.

Thor was one of the better superhero movies this summer.  I'm tempted to say the best, but I'm sure I'm forgetting one.

EDIT:  It was X-Men First Class.

All I've heard from friends and family is how much this year sucked for movies. Maybe when they stream on netflix in 10 years, I'll see them.

Pop culture can suck on my dead wrinkled ass.
