i've done some kickboxing and 'american' boxing (for about a year and a half).   after quitting that, and a tentative foray into Wing Chun kung fu, i decided that i no longer have the desire to hit things/people (spending half of class holding pads so someone else can smack you...hard... isn't really fun for me).   however, i'm still interested in getting better mental discipline and focus.  physical exercise would definitely be a bonus, as well as perhaps some gained abilities (self-defense, maybe, or super special ninja moves or whatever)....  what other options are there for me besides Tai Chi?

Now, I have to say this - there are free communication services out there, but they require both ends to have a headset, programs, configurations, etc.

That's why you have to pay for this - it allows you to chat with anybody who has a standard phone via the internet.

there are also free internet-based phone services that let you make PC-phone calls.  the only catch is that the person with the PC has to initiate the call.  i used to do it all the time as a way to save money on long distance calls when i was away to college.

what services are these?  i haven't seen free PC-Phone services for years.

currently i use Skype, which has great voice quality and is FREE if you know other Skype users (otherwise you pay like 2.5 cents a minute or so)

i too have held off on buying this game due to the Steam activation.  i realize this is probably the way of the future, but it doesn't mean i have to pay full price on this.  i'll wait until it drops below $20.
928  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Your anticipated games of 2005 on: January 09, 2005, 08:37:08 PM
all of these are ones i'm excited to play:

STALKER (can't wait to see how this is going to turn out)
Serious Sam 2 (it's got to be excellent, right?)
The Movies (not too excited about the concept, but it's a Molyneaux game and that's enough for me)
GTA:SA (these games are always fun)

and i'm watching for reviews on:
Bard's Tale

there may be many more good ones next year, but i don't know enough about them yet.

"While the post-war generation of American children had everything fed to them on silver spoons and watched 'I Love Lucy' we were fighting and scratching our way back to the top, the righteous place of the Japanese people. There's this old American saying that applies to Japan: there's no such thing as a free lunch. Well, there obviously is in America, otherwise they wouldn't be so goddamn fat (laughs)."

952  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Anybody playing Halo PC multiplayer? on: October 27, 2004, 03:25:46 PM
i've played Halo more than any other online game so far, ever..  it's really fun, even when the occasional TKer shows up...  the 'feel' of the game is really quite nice, in terms of control, response and physics - and it's a bit more languid than other FPS games.   highly recommended, and yes, i'm always up for games (IM me: kthraarhtk on Xfire)

also, be sure to download Halo CE from Gearbox's website and give that a try (player-made maps!) -  but a warning: the players on that are *expert.

954  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / "Disc Read Error" NOOO!!! [PS2] on: October 23, 2004, 12:10:40 AM

The first remedy is to call Sony Helpline and get them to replace your PS2. This has met with a good degree of success even out of warranty - provided you haven't modded or opened up the the PS2 ! Sony were served  with a class-action lawsuit in USA due to the frequent nature of these Disc Read Error breakdowns. So it is in Sony's interest to repair systems for free.

this happened to a friend of mine - she called the 1-800 number and they repaired it for her for free.  no need to try to open it, or trade it in, or any of these other schemes....!

Sony is still fixing PS2s with "Disc Read Errors" for free - call their 1-800 number and they should give you an RMA number.  all you have to do is pay for shipping to them.
